The ocean accommodates a wide variety of uses that are separated by time of day, season, location, and zones. Conflict can and does occur, however, when two or more groups wish to use the same space at the same time in an exclusive manner. The potential for conflict is well known and the management of ocean space and resources has been, and is being, addressed by a number of State, regional, and Federal organizations, including, among others, coastal zone management agencies, state task forces, and regional fisheries management councils. However, with new and emerging uses of the ocean, such as …

Craig Interpolation For Networks Of Sentences, H Jerome Keisler, Jeffrey M. Keisler Sep 2012

Craig Interpolation For Networks Of Sentences, H Jerome Keisler, Jeffrey M. Keisler

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

The Craig Interpolation Theorem can be viewed as saying that in first order logic, two agents who can only communicate in their common language can cooperate in building proofs. We obtain generalizations of the Craig Interpolation Theorem for finite sets of agents with the following properties. (1) The agents are vertices of a directed graph. (2) The agents have knowledge bases with overlapping signatures. (3) The agents can only communicate by sending to neighboring agents sentences that they know and that are in the common language of the two agents.

The Unsettled State Of Pregnancy Discrimination Claims Under The Florida Civil Rights Act Of 1992, Donna L. Eng Sep 2012

The Unsettled State Of Pregnancy Discrimination Claims Under The Florida Civil Rights Act Of 1992, Donna L. Eng

UF Law Faculty Publications

Florida's employment law practitioners are no doubt aware that employment discrimination actions may be brought under both Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), and under the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992 (FCRA). Both sections contain similar verbiage, and for years, courts have held the Florida Civil Rights Act be interpreted in conformity with Title VII. However, the statutes differ in an important respect: While Title VII expressly forbids sex discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992 does not.

The domestic dog offers a unique opportunity to study complex disorders similar to those seen in humans, but within the context of the much simpler genetic backgrounds of pure breeds, which represent closed populations. We performed a whole-genome search for genetic risk factors of adult-onset deafness in the Border Collie, a breed of herding dog that relies on acute hearing to perceive and respond to commands while working. Adult-onset deafness in Border Collies typically begins in early adulthood and is similar to age-related hearing loss in humans. This earlier onset has particular impact on the utility of working Border Collies …

Non-Fermi Liquid Transport And "Universal" Ratios In Quantum Griffiths Phases, David Nozadze, Thomas Vojta Sep 2012

Non-Fermi Liquid Transport And "Universal" Ratios In Quantum Griffiths Phases, David Nozadze, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We use the semi-classical Boltzmann equation to investigate transport properties such as electrical resistivity, thermal resistivity, thermopower, and the Peltier coefficient of disordered metals close to an antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In the quantum Griffiths phase, the electrons are scattered by spin-fluctuations in the rare regions. This leads to singular temperature dependencies not just at the quantum critical point, but in the entire Griffiths phase. We show that the resulting non-universal power-laws in transport properties are controlled by the same Griffiths exponent λ which governs the thermodynamics. λ takes the value zero at the quantum critical point and increases throughout …

Technology-Enhanced Multimedia Instruction In Foreign Language Classrooms: A Mixed Methods Study, Olha Ketsman Sep 2012

Technology-Enhanced Multimedia Instruction In Foreign Language Classrooms: A Mixed Methods Study, Olha Ketsman

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Technology-enhanced multimedia instruction in grades 6 through 12 foreign language classrooms was the focus of this study. The study’s findings fill a gap in the literature through the report of how technology-enhanced multimedia instruction was successfully implemented in foreign language classrooms.

Convergent parallel mixed methods study was used to produce well-substantiated conclusions about the topic. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected concurrently but separately and were equally weighted.

Foreign language teachers identified as those who extensively used technology-enhanced multimedia instruction participated in the study. Participation in the study involved completion of an online survey and a qualitative interview. Both the …

Financial Indicators In Strategic Decision Making: Recommended Practices For Financial Officers At Small Private Colleges And Universities In The Midwestern United States, Beth Reissenweber

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study explored whether financial leaders and institutional governing boards use financial indicators as a tool to inform decision making, solely as a compliance measurement tool, or not at all. The purpose of this qualitative study was two-fold to: (a) identify the use of financial indicators in strategic decision making, and (b) investigate how institutions use financial indicators to support governing boards in making strategic decisions. The data were obtained from a survey of 214 financial officers to identify the use of financial indicators, and in-depth interviews with leaders from six institutions who indicated strategic use of financial indicators to …

Maximal Force Characteristics Of The Ca2+-Powered Actuator Of Vorticella Convallaria, Sangjin Ryu, Matthew J. Lang, Paul Matsudaira Sep 2012

Maximal Force Characteristics Of The Ca2+-Powered Actuator Of Vorticella Convallaria, Sangjin Ryu, Matthew J. Lang, Paul Matsudaira

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The millisecond stalk contraction of the sessile ciliate Vorticella convallaria is powered by energy from Ca2+ binding to generate contractile forces of ~10 nN. Its contractile organelle, the spasmoneme, generates higher contractile force under increased stall resistances. By applying viscous drag force to contracting V. convallaria in a microfluidic channel, we observed that the mechanical force and work of the spasmoneme depended on the stalk length, i.e., the maximum tension (150–350 nN) and work linearly depended on the stalk length (~2.5 nN and ~30 fJ per 1 mm of the stalk). This stalk-length dependency suggests that motor units of …

Endogenous Inhibitor Proteins That Connect Ser/Thr Kinases And Phosphatases In Cell Signaling., Masumi Eto, David L Brautigan Sep 2012

Endogenous Inhibitor Proteins That Connect Ser/Thr Kinases And Phosphatases In Cell Signaling., Masumi Eto, David L Brautigan

Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics Faculty Papers

Protein phosphatase activity acts as a primary determinant of the extent and duration of phosphorylation of cellular proteins in response to physiological stimuli. Ser/Thr protein phosphatase-1 (PP1) belongs to the PPP superfamily, and is associated with regulatory subunits that confer substrate specificity, allosteric regulation, and subcellular compartmentalization. In addition, all eukaryotic cells contain multiple heat-stable proteins that originally were thought to inhibit phosphatase catalytic subunits released from the regulatory subunits, as a fail-safe mechanism. However, discovery of C-kinase-activated PP1 inhibitor, Mr of 17 kDa (CPI-17) required fresh thinking about the endogenous inhibitors as specific regulators of particular phosphatase complexes, acting …

Personal Identity And Nostalgia For The Distant Land Of Past: Legacy Tourism, Nina M. Ray, Gary Mccain Sep 2012

Personal Identity And Nostalgia For The Distant Land Of Past: Legacy Tourism, Nina M. Ray, Gary Mccain

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

"The past is certainly a distant land and getting there is a difficult and imperfect undertaking" (Brown, Hirschman & Maclaran (2006). This paper explores motivations behind how consumers reach that "distant land." Over 1,000 respondents of a variety of ethnic groups show very different stories and diaspora timelines, but personal identity and connection with place are always top ranked motivations for interest in ancestors. How might groups, who may suffer from a lack of identity, fit into these findings when 'personal identity' is the number one reason why consumers engage in genealogy and legacy tourism? Whether a group is well …
