Characterization Of The Libs Plasma Of An Explosive Stimulant, 3-Nitrobenzoic Acid, Nathan Andrew Bullock Sep 2012

Characterization Of The Libs Plasma Of An Explosive Stimulant, 3-Nitrobenzoic Acid, Nathan Andrew Bullock

Student Theses and Dissertations

An organic nitro compound representative of nitro based explosives is examined using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). This technique shows promise in the field of analytical chemistry and is a candidate for the standoff detection of explosives. In this thesis we examined the formation of diatomic molecules produced in the plasma. The trends observed are discussed, including the possibility of non-LTE conditions as well as optical thickness. We discuss the various formation pathways of these molecules and temperature effects on their formation. Matrix effects are examined in the context of the measurement of excitation temperatures and implications for the real …

Voltage-Controlled Enzymes: The New Janus Bifrons, Carlos A. Villalba-Galea Sep 2012

Voltage-Controlled Enzymes: The New Janus Bifrons, Carlos A. Villalba-Galea

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

The Ciona intestinalis voltage-sensitive phosphatase, Ci-VSP, was the first Voltage-controlled Enzyme (VEnz) proven to be under direct command of the membrane potential. The discovery of Ci-VSP conjugated voltage sensitivity and enzymatic activity in a single protein. These two facets of Ci-VSP activity have provided a unique model for studying how membrane potential is sensed by proteins and a novel mechanism for control of enzymatic activity. These facets make Ci-VSP a fascinating and versatile enzyme. Ci-VSP has a voltage sensing domain (VSD) that resembles those found in voltage-gated channels (VGC). The VSD resides in the N-terminus and is formed by four …

Whole-Word Recognition From Articulatory Movements For Silent Speech Interfaces, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green, Frank Rudzicz Sep 2012

Whole-Word Recognition From Articulatory Movements For Silent Speech Interfaces, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green, Frank Rudzicz

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Articulation-based silent speech interfaces convert silently produced speech movements into audible words. These systems are still in their experimental stages, but have significant potential for facilitating oral communication in persons with laryngectomy or speech impairments. In this paper, we report the result of a novel, real-time algorithm that recognizes whole-words based on articulatory movements. This approach differs from prior work that has focused primarily on phoneme-level recognition based on articulatory features. On average, our algorithm missed 1.93 words in a sequence of twenty-five words with an average latency of 0.79 seconds for each word prediction using a data set of …

A Study Of Executable Model Based Systems Engineering From Dodaf Using Simulink, Weston J. Hanoka, Michael H. Ryan Sep 2012

A Study Of Executable Model Based Systems Engineering From Dodaf Using Simulink, Weston J. Hanoka, Michael H. Ryan

Theses and Dissertations

Diagrams and visuals often cannot adequately capture a complex system’s architecture for analysis. The Department of Defense Architectural Framework (DoDAF), written to follow the Unified Modeling Language (UML), is a collection of mandated common architectural products for interoperability among the DoD components. In this study, DoDAF products from as-is Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) Satellite Communication (SATCOM) systems have been utilized for the creation of executable architectures as part of an Executable Model Based Systems Engineering (EMBSE) process. EMBSE was achieved using Simulink, a software tool for modeling, simulating and analyzing dynamic systems.

This study has demonstrated that DoDAF products can …

Towards The Mitigation Of Correlation Effects In The Analysis Of Hyperspectral Imagery With Extension To Robust Parameter Design, Jason P. Williams Sep 2012

Towards The Mitigation Of Correlation Effects In The Analysis Of Hyperspectral Imagery With Extension To Robust Parameter Design, Jason P. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Standard anomaly detectors and classifiers assume data to be uncorrelated and homogeneous, which is not inherent in Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI). To address the detection difficulty, a new method termed Iterative Linear RX (ILRX) uses a line of pixels which shows an advantage over RX, in that it mitigates some of the effects of correlation due to spatial proximity; while the iterative adaptation from Iterative Linear RX (IRX) simultaneously eliminates outliers. In this research, the application of classification algorithms using anomaly detectors to remove potential anomalies from mean vector and covariance matrix estimates and addressing non-homogeneity through cluster analysis, both of …

Race For President In Nh Remains Close, More Voters Undecided 9/13/2012, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

The race between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney remains tight in New Hampshire, but the percentage of voters who remain undecided has tripled in the last month. A slim majority of voters predict that the Obama/Biden ticket will ultimately win the election. Election: 2012

The Human Brain Intracerebral Microvascular System: Development And Structure, Miguel Marín-Padilla Sep 2012

The Human Brain Intracerebral Microvascular System: Development And Structure, Miguel Marín-Padilla

Dartmouth Scholarship

The capillary from the meningeal inner pial lamella play a crucial role in the development and structural organization of the cerebral cortex extrinsic and intrinsic microvascular compartments. Only pial capillaries are capable of perforating through the cortex external glial limiting membrane (EGLM) to enter into the nervous tissue, although incapable of perforating the membrane to exit the brain. Circulatory dynamics and functional demands determine which capillaries become arterial and which capillaries become venous. The perforation of the cortex EGLM by pial capillaries is a complex process characterized by three fundamental stages: (1) pial capillary contact with the EGLM with fusion …

Role Of Autophagy In The Response Of Hs578t Breast Tumor Cells To Radiation, Shweta Chakradeo Sep 2012

Role Of Autophagy In The Response Of Hs578t Breast Tumor Cells To Radiation, Shweta Chakradeo

Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is the most commonly observed cancer type in women and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Radiation can be used to debulk tumors prior to surgery as well as to treat patients after surgery and/or chemotherapy. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that the anti –malarial drug chloroquine sensitizes breast cancer cell lines to radiation by suppression of autophagy which is a conservative catabolic process that can be cytoprotective. The scientific literature has demonstrated that many tumor cell systems undergo cytoprotective autophagy and that pharmacological or genetic inhibition of autophagy leads to other …
