2011 Global Student E‐Book Survey, Allen Mckiel

Charleston Library Conference

This article reviews the responses from the second ebrary informal survey of students concerning their experiences with information resources, which was conducted in September and early October of 2011. The first survey concluded in May of 2008. The surveys asked essentially the same questions about student use of electronic and print resources— perceived strengths and weaknesses as well as preferences and attitudes about them. This analysis compares the student responses separated by the three and a half years. Tables 11, 12, 15, and 16 use data constructed from the 2008 survey that were not initially reported so that they could …

General Method To Unravel Ancient Population Structures Through Surnames, Final Validation On Italian Data, Alessio Boattini, Antonella Lisa, Ornella Fiorani, Gianna Zei, Davide Pettener, Franz Manni

Human Biology

We analyze the geographic location of 77,451 different Italian surnames (17,579,891 individuals) obtained from the lists of telephone subscribers of the year 1993.

By using a specific neural network analysis (Self-Organizing Maps, SOMs), we automatically identify the geographic origin of 49,117 different surnames. To validate the methodology, we compare the results to a study, previously conducted, on the same database, with accurate supervised methods. By comparing the results, we find an overlap of 97%, meaning that the SOMs methodology is highly reliable and well traces back the geographic origin of surnames at the time of their introduction (Late Middle Ages/Renaissance …

Selection Of Hydrologic Modeling Approaches For Climate Change Assessment: A Comparison Of Model Scale And Structures, Christopher G. Surfleet, Desirèe Tullos, Heejun Chang, Il-Won Jung

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

A wide variety of approaches to hydrologic (rainfall–runoff) modeling of river basins confounds our ability to select, develop, and interpret models, particularly in the evaluation of prediction uncertainty associated with climate change assessment. To inform the model selection process, we characterized and compared three structurally-distinct approaches and spatial scales of parameterization to modeling catchment hydrology: a large-scale approach (using the VIC model; 671,000 km2 area), a basin-scale approach (using the PRMS model; 29,700 km2 area), and a site-specific approach (the GSFLOW model; 4700 km2 area) forced by the same future climate estimates. For each approach, we present …

Press Releases

First lady Michelle Obama will deliver a campaign address Friday, September 28 in Alexander Gymnasium on the Lawrence University campus.

“While Lawrence is very careful not to endorse candidates for political office, we do encourage our students to learn about the political process and to be involved in making informed decisions about candidates. As such, the first lady’s appearance is an excellent educational opportunity for Lawrence students to experience first-hand the political process in the homestretch of an important election cycle,” said David Burrows, provost and dean of the faculty. “One of the founding traditions of a liberal arts college …

The Economic Contribution Of Instream Flows To The Lower Connecticut River Watershed, New England, Usa, Helen M. Poulos, Clement Loo, James G. Workman, Ann De Boer, Julia Michaels

Environmental Studies Publications

River recreation is a rapidly expanding source of economic productivity. Angler spending has been used as the basis for estimating the regional economic estimates of local income and jobs in several water-limited systems of the western United States and Mexico. However, the contribution of outdoor recreation to the economies of regions that do not experience water scarcity continues to be underappreciated. This paper estimates the economic contribution of angling to the lower Connecticut River Watershed (CRW) economy. The authors draw upon existing angler expenditure, river flow and geographic information system (GIS) data to relate anger use of the lower CRW …
