Application Of Seawinds Scatterometer Data To The Study Of Antarctic Icebergs, Keith Mitchell Stuart Sep 2012

Application Of Seawinds Scatterometer Data To The Study Of Antarctic Icebergs, Keith Mitchell Stuart

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of iceberg location and size is important for safety reasons as well as for understanding many geophysical and biological processes. This dissertation analyzes large tabular icebergs in the Southern Ocean using the SeaWinds scatterometer. SeaWinds is a spaceborne radar designed to measure the microwave backscatter from the Earth's surface. Using resolution-enhancement techniques, backscatter measurements are processed into backscatter images in which icebergs can be observed. An iceberg detection methodology is formalized using daily scatterometer images. Radar profiles from common Antarctic scatterers are quantified and an iceberg detection methodology is formalized using daily scatterometer images. Iceberg positions are determined in …

Abstract. Background: Synthetic odour baits present an unexploited potential for sampling, surveillance and control of malaria and other mosquito vectors. However, application of such baits is impeded by the unavailability of robust odour delivery devices that perform reliably under field conditions. In the present study the suitability of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and nylon strips for dispensing synthetic attractants of host-seeking Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes was evaluated. Methods. Baseline experiments assessed the numbers of An. gambiae mosquitoes caught in response to low density polyethylene (LDPE) sachets filled with attractants, attractant-treated nylon strips, control LDPE sachets, and control nylon strips placed in …

Research Brief: "Effective Vocational Rehabilitation Services For Military Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

In this study, researchers found that veterans with college training were more likely to become employed when they also received job search assistance and job placement assistance, as well as that veterans without such training increased their probability of employment after receiving diagnoses and treatment of impairments, VR counseling, job placement assistance, rehabilitation technology, and other supports. In practice, the results of this study provide important information for rehabilitation counselors, vocational counselors, and other practitioners working with veterans with disabilities. In policy, policymakers should work to support and expand state VR programs to reach a wider population of veterans. Suggestions …

Prediction Of In Vivo Efficacy For Cell Cycle Inhibitors Using A Multiscale Tumor Growth Model, Feng Yang Sep 2012

Prediction Of In Vivo Efficacy For Cell Cycle Inhibitors Using A Multiscale Tumor Growth Model, Feng Yang

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Model-based drug development (MBDD) has been recognized as a new paradigm and mindset that will change the landscape of drug development. As a part of the wide Quantitative Pharmacology (QP) initiative within Lilly, we developed this cell-cycle based, multi-scale tumor growth model to predict In Vivo efficacy for Lilly cell cycle inhibitors. Cell cycle is a key area of focus in the Lilly oncology portfolio, reflecting essential mechanisms underlying tumor growth. We integrated diverse datasets such as pharmacokinetic data, tumor growth data, in vitro/invo flow cytometry data, and a variety of cell cycle biomarkers such as pTCTPs46, pHH3s10(mitotic marker), TUNEL(apoptotic …

“I’M Teaching What?!”: Preparing University Faculty For Online Instruction, Susan Ohara, Robert Pritchard Sep 2012

“I’M Teaching What?!”: Preparing University Faculty For Online Instruction, Susan Ohara, Robert Pritchard

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

The percentage of higher education students enrolled in online courses has increased from 9.6 percent in fall 2002 to 33 percent in fall 2010. Due to the increased importance of online courses and programs on university campuses there is a need to better prepare novice technology faculty for the delivery of these courses. This article provides a description of the process through which a group of faculty with low to high technology skills prepared to deliver an online masters program. Minutes of meetings, documents produced, online discussion transcripts, and informal conversations were all used as data to analyze outcomes of …
