The Modernized Representation Of Chinese Classical Literature In Taiwan Modern Poetry, Sheng Wu
The Modernized Representation Of Chinese Classical Literature In Taiwan Modern Poetry, Sheng Wu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Many Taiwanese modern poets have made enlightening explorations in their poems through their incorporating Chinese national features to reflect national spirits and traditional cultures. In the modernized representation of classical literature, modern consciousness and techniques are employed to represent historical figures, classical texts and traditional themes. This paper discusses from three perspectives how modernized representation is realized: how historical figures and contemporary characters are brought into the same one space-time; how classical works are extended and recreated to integrate with contemporary texts to form inter-text; how the traditional themes are endowed with modern consciousness or are explored using modern techniques.

The Name And Nature Of The Psychology Of Art: An Exploration Of Interdisciplinary Studies Of Literature Since 1976, Fengjie Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The disciplinary formation of psychology of art in China experienced three phases in terms of its name and nature, and two approaches have emerged with one from the psychological perspective and the other from literary perspective. The psychological perspective takes the relation between psychology and literary art as a psychological phenomenon, while the literary perspective takes it as a literary one. This paper tries to argue for a discipline to study the psychology of literary art and establish a subject boundary of the discipline. It argues that the limits of psychology in literary studies has to be recognized and that …

The Sound Of The Study Of "Literature": A Survey Of Issues Of Sound In Ancient Liteary Texts And Studies On Texts, Yinchi Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Literature develops from the oral to the written, and ancient texts were not only written for silent study reading but also for sound interpretive reading. The paper exemplifies the different aspects of sound in Chinese classical literary texts, with particular attention to Tongcheng School's investigations into the sound issues in Qing Dynasty. The paper proceeds to delineate the possible relations between the sound issues in prose and in verse, and hopes to provide an example to the interplay between genres.

Seed Dimorphism, Nutrients And Salinity Differentially Affect Seed Traits Of The Desert Halophyte Suaeda Aralocaspica Via Multiple Maternal Effects, Lei Wang, Jerry M. Baskin, Carol C. Baskin, J. Hans C. Cornelissen, Ming Dong, Zhenying Huang

BACKGROUND: Maternal effects may influence a range of seed traits simultaneously and are likely to be context-dependent. Disentangling the interactions of plant phenotype and growth environment on various seed traits is important for understanding regeneration and establishment of species in natural environments. Here, we used the seed-dimorphic plant Suaeda aralocaspica to test the hypothesis that seed traits are regulated by multiple maternal effects.
RESULTS: Plants grown from brown seeds had a higher brown:black seed ratio than plants from black seeds, and germination percentage of brown seeds was higher than that of black seeds under all conditions tested. However, the coefficient …

The MiniBooNE and SciBooNE collaborations report the results of a joint search for short baseline disappearance of ν ̄μ at Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beamline. The MiniBooNE Cherenkov detector and the SciBooNE tracking detector observe antineutrinos from the same beam, therefore the combined analysis of their data sets serves to partially constrain some of the flux and cross section uncertainties. Uncertainties in the ν μ background were constrained by neutrino flux and cross section measurements performed in both detectors. A likelihood ratio method was used to set a 90% confidence level upper limit on ν ̄μ disappearance that dramatically improves upon …

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
After nearly a decade as a chief academic officer, I got used to people asking me my opinion on higher education issues. But now that I am working at the American Council on Education, the questions are more far reaching. For example, recently, someone asked me what I thought should be done about the cheating scandal at Harvard.

An automated, non-destructive anhysteretic magnetization characterization method for studying and modeling soft magnetic materials. This measurement method employs a “reading-waveform” that allows multiple points of reference to be established in tracing out the B waveform. In using the reference values from this waveform, the components of B that cannot be measured directly may be calculated with precision. In turn, the initial magnitude of the B waveform is identified as the unknown component of the anhysteretic state. The processes can be repeated for different values of static fields as well as a function of temperature to produce a family of anhysteretic …

U.S. Energy Policy: The Burdens Of The Past And Moving Forward, John P. Banks
U.S. Energy Policy: The Burdens Of The Past And Moving Forward, John P. Banks
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Since the oil embargo of 1973, the United States has struggled to implement a sustainable and comprehensive national energy policy. Forging a consistent policy approach has been complicated by more recent emerging trends: how to combat global climate change, the continued emergence of viable alternative energy options, and the hydrocarbon renaissance.
This presentation will discuss several major themes that have impacted energy policy-making since the 1970s and how they are reflected in key issues debated in the current election year. It will then pose some thoughts on how to move away from the burdens of the past and move forward.
