Modification And Application Of A Turbulence Response Analysis Method For Flexible Aircraft Configurations, Christie Jeanne Funk Oct 2012

Modification And Application Of A Turbulence Response Analysis Method For Flexible Aircraft Configurations, Christie Jeanne Funk

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A software program and associated methodology to study gust loading on aircraft exists for a classification of geometrically simplified flexible configurations. This program consists of a simple aircraft response model with two rigid and three flexible symmetric degrees of freedom and allows for the calculation of various airplane responses due to a discrete one-minus-cosine gust as well as continuous turbulence. Simplifications, assumptions, and opportunities for potential improvements pertaining to the existing software program are first identified, then a revised version of the original software tool is developed with improved methodology to include more complex geometries, additional excitation cases, and output …

European Strategies For Energy Security In The Natural Gas Market, Boyka M. Stefanova Oct 2012

European Strategies For Energy Security In The Natural Gas Market, Boyka M. Stefanova

Journal of Strategic Security

This article examines the European Union's (EU) approach to energy security on the example of its natural gas imports from Russia, the largest supplier of gas to European markets. Two major projects, Nord Stream in the Northern and Western part of the EU, and Nabucco in South-Central Europe, demonstrate opposing energy security strategies, seemingly at odds with the EU objective of achieving energy independence from Russia. The question arises: Are these strategies sustainable? How can they be reconciled and pursued under a common policy? The main argument is that such conflicting sub-regional policy initiatives are amenable to progressive realignment and …

Assessing Whether Oil Dependency In Venezuela Contributes To National Instability, Adam Kott

Journal of Strategic Security

The focus of this article is on what role, if any, oil has on Venezuela's instability. When trying to explain why a resource-rich country experiences slow or negative growth, experts often point to the resource curse. The following pages explore the traditional theory behind the resource curse as well as alternative perspectives to this theory such as ownership structure and the correlation between oil prices and democracy. This article also explores the various forms of instability within Venezuela and their causes. Finally, the article looks at President Hugo Chavez's political and economic policies as well as the stagnation of the …

Citizen Petitions: An Empirical Study, Michael A. Carrier, Daryl Wander Oct 2012

Citizen Petitions: An Empirical Study, Michael A. Carrier, Daryl Wander

Cardozo Law Review

In recent years, brand-name drug companies have engaged in an array of conduct that has delayed generic competition. While some of the activity - such as settlements between brand and generic firms and "product hopping" from one drug version to another - has received attention, another behavior has, until now, flown under the radar.

This Article examines the activity of "citizen petitions." A citizen petition is a request for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take an action such as evaluating a drug's safety or effectiveness. When used appropriately, it could raise awareness of legitimate concerns with a …

An Information-Gathering Approach To Copyright Policy, Peter Dicola, Matthew Sag

Cardozo Law Review

For over a century and with increasing frequency, major controversies have erupted between large distributors of copyrighted works (song publishers, movie studios, record labels, book publishers, etc.) and makers of new technologies for experiencing those works (player piano manufacturers, VCR manufacturers, the creators of file sharing software, Google Books, etc.). Usually, the copyright owners and the technology firms reach a licensing deal - but not without some form of government intervention. Various institutions within the federal government have become involved in these disputes, using a variety of different mechanisms. This Article is a theoretical investigation of government intervention in these …

Characterisation Of The Colour Doppler "Twinkle" Artefact, Deirdre Cassidy, Andrew Fagan, Jacinta Browne Oct 2012

Characterisation Of The Colour Doppler "Twinkle" Artefact, Deirdre Cassidy, Andrew Fagan, Jacinta Browne

Articles

This investigation involved the development of a range of Colour Doppler Twinkle Artefact phantoms to characterise and quantify the “Twinkle” artefact which is often present when an irregular structure is encountered in the imaged field of view. The artefact occurs in both colour and power Doppler ultrasound imaging and manifests as a false depiction of colour velocity information in stationary soft tissue and therefore can cause significant misdiagnosis of areas of flow within the patient. It has been hypothesised that it is generated due to a strongly reflecting medium composed of individual reflectors and therefore becomes a clinical concern when …

Spherical Lamina Emergent Mechanisms, Samuel E. Wilding, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby Oct 2012

Spherical Lamina Emergent Mechanisms, Samuel E. Wilding, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby

Faculty Publications

Lamina emergent mechanisms (LEMs) are compliant mechanisms that can be manufactured from planar materials and are capable of motion out of the plane of manufacture. Spherical LEMs combine the unique motion of spherical mechanisms with the compactness and simple topology of LEMs. The fundamentals of spherical LEMs are discussed in this work. It is found that 21 of the 33 possible spherical 4R types can be spherical LEMs. A classification based on these 21 possible types is developed. This classification is used to predict motion capabilities of spherical 6R, and Equintet mechanisms. It is also applied to arrays of spherical …

Credit Card Program Value Maximization With Promotion Density For Product Discounts In Shopping Malls, Rae M. Chang, Robert John Kauffman, Kwansoo Kim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We model value maximization of credit card programs for shopping malls, when card customerscan obtain product discounts of different percentages in the presence of promotion density andcompetition. Our results suggest strategies for quantitatively evaluating the trade-offs in valueoutcomes when consumer sensitivity to product discounting varies.

Observation Of A Self-Limiting, Shear-Induced Turbulent Inversion Layer Above Marine Stratocumulus, J. Katzwinkel, H. Siebert, R. A. Shaw Oct 2012

Observation Of A Self-Limiting, Shear-Induced Turbulent Inversion Layer Above Marine Stratocumulus, J. Katzwinkel, H. Siebert, R. A. Shaw

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

High-resolution measurements of thermodynamic, microphysical, and turbulence properties inside a turbulent inversion layer above a marine stratocumulus cloud layer are presented. The measurements are performed with the helicopter-towed measurement payload Airborne Cloud Turbulence Observation System (ACTOS), which allows for sampling with low true air speeds and steep profiles through cloud top. Vertical profiles show that the turbulent inversion layer consists of clear air above the cloud top, with nearly linear profiles of potential temperature, horizontal wind speed, absolute humidity, and concentration of interstitial aerosol. The layer is turbulent, with an energy dissipation rate nearly the same as that in the …

Fabrication Process Comparison And Dynamics Evaluation Of Electrothermal Actuators For A Prototype Mems Safe And Arming Devices, Scott A. Ostrow Ii, Robert A. Lake, J. P. Lombardi Iii, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Lavern A. Starman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Electrothermal actuators fabricated using the Polysilicon Multi-User MEMS Process (PolyMUMPs) and the Sandia Ultra-Planar, Multi-Level MEMS Technology 5 (SUMMiT V) have been investigated for use in integrated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) safe and arming devices. The fabricated electrothermal actuators have been dynamically tested to determine and compare the responses of devices from both processes. Furthermore, the integration of these devices into a safe and arming device were tested and investigated for each process. Initial results indicate that the SUMMiT devices provide the most optimum results based on consistency of operation and reliability.

Sar-Based Vibration Estimation Using The Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform, Qi Wang, Matthew Pepin, Ryan J. Beach, Ralf Dunkel, Tom Atwood, Balu Santhanam, Walter Gerstle, Armin W. Doerry, Majeed M. Hayat Oct 2012

Sar-Based Vibration Estimation Using The Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform, Qi Wang, Matthew Pepin, Ryan J. Beach, Ralf Dunkel, Tom Atwood, Balu Santhanam, Walter Gerstle, Armin W. Doerry, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A vibration estimation method for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is presented based on a novel application of the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFRFT). Small vibrations of ground targets introduce phase modulation in the SAR returned signals. With standard preprocessing of the returned signals, followed by the application of the DFRFT, the time-varying accelerations, frequencies, and displacements associated with vibrating objects can be extracted by successively estimating the quasi-instantaneous chirp rate in the phase-modulated signal in each subaperture. The performance of the proposed method is investigated quantitatively, and the measurable vibration frequencies and displacements are determined. Simulation results show that the …

From Profane To Divine: The Hegemonic Appropriation Of Pagan Imagery Into Eastern Christian Hymnody, Jordan Lippert Oct 2012

From Profane To Divine: The Hegemonic Appropriation Of Pagan Imagery Into Eastern Christian Hymnody, Jordan Lippert

Scripps Senior Theses

Spanning the first seven centuries of Christianity, this paper explores how Eastern Christian and Byzantine hymn chant was developed alongside pagan and Jewish worship traditions around the Near East. Comparison of hymns by Christian composers such as St. Romanos the Melodist and pagan poetry reveals many similarities in the types of metaphorical imagery used in both religious expressions. Common in Christian hymn texts, well-known metaphors, like the “Light of God,” are juxtaposed with pagan mythological gods, such as Apollo and Helios. This paper attempts to explain how and why Christians appropriated and adopted ancient pagan imagery into the burgeoning musical …
