Jarecki V. Ohoven: Medimmune As A Sword For Certain Copyright Owners, Paul G. Anderson

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

Copyright, compared to other forms of intellectual property, is acutely and uniquely attuned to the film and television industry. Somewhat distinctive of these industries are the numerous, low–threshold hurdles that can significantly interfere with a copyright owner’s commercial exploitation of their work in connection with a film or television production.

The Evolution Of "The Toy Department": A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Sports Sections Since 1956, John Carvalho, C. Thomas Preston Jr., James Pokrywczynski, Nicholas Kirby Oct 2012

The Evolution Of "The Toy Department": A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Sports Sections Since 1956, John Carvalho, C. Thomas Preston Jr., James Pokrywczynski, Nicholas Kirby

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents an analysis of sports sections in eight metropolitan newspapers over six decades, from 1956 until 2006. Results demonstrated that newspapers devoted more space to sports, although a slight decrease (perhaps due to increased popularity of the Internet) was noted in 2006. Newspapers also used more locally written articles on their section front. Spectator sports coverage increased over the period, at the expense of participant sports.

The Positive Externalities Of Social Capital: Benefitting From Senior Brokers, Charles Galunic, Gokhan Ertug, Martin Gargiulo Oct 2012

The Positive Externalities Of Social Capital: Benefitting From Senior Brokers, Charles Galunic, Gokhan Ertug, Martin Gargiulo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The importance of an actor’s network to his/her private benefits is well explored. Less well understood are the positive externalities of social capital, that is whether an actor’s social capital “spills-over” and improves the outcomes of those to whom s/he is connected, creating broader, not just private, benefits. This paper examines how investment bankers add value to one another in the course of everyday work. Our concern is with a banker’s second-order social capital. The main question is whether being connected to a broker matters to the ability of the focal actor to add value to those around him/her. We …

Unilateral Measures And Emissions Mitigation, Shurojit Chatterji, Sayantan Ghosal, Sean Walsh, John Whalley Oct 2012

Unilateral Measures And Emissions Mitigation, Shurojit Chatterji, Sayantan Ghosal, Sean Walsh, John Whalley

Research Collection School Of Economics

We discuss global climate mitigation that builds on existing unilateral measures to cut emissions. We document and discuss the rationale for such unilateral measures argue that such measures have the potential to generate positive spillover effects both within and across countries. In a simple dynamic model of learning we show that while single countries on their own may never get to the point of switching completely to low emission activities, a learning process with positive spillovers across nations is more likely to deliver a global switch to low emissions. We discuss the key features of a new global Intellectual Property …

Estimation Of High-Frequency Volatility: An Autoregressive Conditional Duration Approach, Yiu Kuen Tse, Thomas Tao Yang Oct 2012

Estimation Of High-Frequency Volatility: An Autoregressive Conditional Duration Approach, Yiu Kuen Tse, Thomas Tao Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We propose a method to estimate the intraday volatility of a stock by integrating the instantaneous conditional return variance per unit time obtained from the autoregressive conditional duration (ACD) model, called the ACD-ICV method. We compare the daily volatility estimated using the ACD-ICV method against several versions of the realized volatility (RV) method, including the bipower variation RV with subsampling, the realized kernel estimate, and the duration-based RV. Our Monte Carlo results show that the ACD-ICV method has lower root mean-squared error than the RV methods in almost all cases considered. This article has online supplementary material.

An Evolutionary Analysis Of Turnout With Conformist Citizens, Massimiliano Landi, Mauro Sodini Oct 2012

An Evolutionary Analysis Of Turnout With Conformist Citizens, Massimiliano Landi, Mauro Sodini

Research Collection School Of Economics

We propose an evolutionary analysis of a voting game where citizens have a preference for conformism that adds to the instrumental preference for the electoral outcome. Multiple equilibria arise, and some generate high turnout. Simulations of best response dynamics show that high turnout is asymptotically stable if conformism matters but its likelihood depends on the reference group for conformism: high turnout is more likely when voters care about their own group's choice, as this better overrides the free rider problem of voting games. Comparative statics on the voting cost distribution, the population's size or the groups' composition are also done.

Social Networks And Risk Taking: Evidence From Corporate Control Activities, Yen Teik Lee Oct 2012

Social Networks And Risk Taking: Evidence From Corporate Control Activities, Yen Teik Lee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates the impact of social ties between the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) andboard members on corporate risk-taking in mergers and acquisitions (M&As) and on shareholdervalue. Using a measure of CEO-director connections in a large sample of U.S. firms from 2000 to2010, we document that boardroom connections lower firm acquisitiveness. If connected CEOsundertake M&As, they are less likely to choose focus acquisitions, and more likely to pay in stock.CEO-board connections do not enhance firm value in M&As. Higher levels of boardroomconnection are associated with lower announcement returns and lower subsequent return on assets. Our results are robust to alternative explanations …

Asia In The Middle East: The Internationalization Of Singapore Private Firms Into The Gcc, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How, Simin Sharmaine Neo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Internationalization efforts into the GCC as a national initiative tend to be spearheaded by a vanguard of government-linked companies (GLCs), usually assisted in their entry through various connections, political or otherwise. As large companies with the presumed reliability of government backing, these GLCs tend to be involved in larger-scale, more critical, and more iconic projects. It is a matter of fact, however, that while internationalization may be led by large-scale and attention-grabbing GLCs, the vast majority of FDI and economic activity is, in the long term, entrenched in the activities of private companies. As such, it must logically follow that …

Ecosystem Advantage: How To Successfully Harness The Power Of Partners, Peter James Williamson, Arnoud De Meyer Oct 2012

Ecosystem Advantage: How To Successfully Harness The Power Of Partners, Peter James Williamson, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Changes in the global environment are generating opportunities for companies to build advantage by creating loosely coupled networks or ecosystems. Ecosystems are larger, more diverse, and more fluid than a traditional set of bilateral partnerships or complementors. By leveraging ecosystems, companies can deliver complex solutions while maintaining corporate focus. This article describes six keys to unlock ecosystem advantage: pinpointing where value is created, defining an architecture of differentiated partner roles, stimulating complementary partner investments, reducing the transaction costs, facilitating joint learning across the network, and engineering effective ways to capture profit.

Derivation Of Screening Benchmarks For Dietary Methylmercury Exposure For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer): Rationale For Use In Ecological Risk Assessment, David C. Depew, Niladri Basu, Neil M. Burgess, Linda M. Campbell Oct 2012

Derivation Of Screening Benchmarks For Dietary Methylmercury Exposure For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer): Rationale For Use In Ecological Risk Assessment, David C. Depew, Niladri Basu, Neil M. Burgess, Linda M. Campbell

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The current understanding of methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity to avian species has improved considerably in recent years and indicates that exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of MeHg through the diet can adversely affect various aspects of avian health, reproduction, and survival. Because fish-eating birds are at particular risk for elevated MeHg exposure, the authors surveyed the available primary and secondary literature to summarize the effects of dietary MeHg on the common loon (Gavia immer) and to derive ecologically relevant toxic thresholds for dietary exposure to MeHg in fish prey. After considering the available data, the authors propose three screening benchmarks of …

An Improved Micro Propagation System For Successful Transformation Of Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis)., Fg Al-Swedi, S Lane, Mp Fuller Oct 2012

An Improved Micro Propagation System For Successful Transformation Of Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis)., Fg Al-Swedi, S Lane, Mp Fuller

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Cauliflower is described as a recalcitrant plant to the genetic transformation process from Agrobacterium. Cauliflower curd meristems can be used to produce shoots to clone the mother plants in in-vitro culture. Micro propagation techniques were used in this study at different stages to produce cauliflower explants. The healthy growing explants were transformed with the APX gene using a standard transfection protocol mediated by Agrobacterium. The plants that successfully grew under abiotic stress and presenting a normal plant phenotypic feature were considered transformants. The transfection conditions were optimised during this study and 105Agrobacterium cell/5 plants/pot successfully produced 1 transformed plant/pot.

We provide an axiomatization of an additively separable social welfare function in the context of Harsanyi's impartial observer theorem. To do this, we reformulate Harsanyi's setting to make the lotteries over the identities the observer may assume independent of the social alternative.

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The accessory lacrimal glands are assumed to contribute to the production of tear fluid, but little is known about their function. The goal of this study was to conduct an analysis of gene expression by glands of Wolfring that would provide a more complete picture of the function of these glands. METHODS: Glands of Wolfring were isolated from frozen sections of human eyelids by laser microdissection. RNA was extracted from the cells and hybridized to gene expression arrays. The expression of several of the major genes was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Of the 24 most highly expressed genes, 9 were …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Bronfenbrenner's Ecology Of Human Development, Carol Medders Denis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the norms associated with this condition in the United States have evolved over time. Culturally established beliefs control how the disorder is defined and treated. This study will explore the idea that ADHD is a socially constructed disorder that impacts multiple levels of society. These levels include the child, the family, the school, the medical community, and the advertising agencies. Social construction theory will be used to establish a framework for this study. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s (1977) system theory describing the ecology of human development will also be used to investigate the impact that different …

This study was designed to measure vitamin D metabolites in the aqueous and vitreous humor and in tear fluid, and to determine if dietary vitamin D3 supplementation affects these levels. We also determined if the corneal epithelium can synthesize vitamin D following UV-B exposure. Methods: Rabbits were fed a control or vitamin D3 supplemented diet. Pilocarpine- stimulated tear fluid was collected and aqueous and vitreous humor were drawn from enucleated eyes. Plasma vitamin D was also measured. To test for epithelial vitamin D synthesis, a human corneal limbal epithelial cell line was irradiated with two doses of UV-B (10 and …

Does Paying For Online Product Reviews Pay Off? The Effects Of Monetary Incentives On Content Creators And Consumers, Andrew Stephen, Yakov Bart, Christilene Du Plessis, Dilney Goncalves

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We show that although incentivizing product reviews results in more helpful content, disclosing payment lowers review consumers’ product quality expectations. This effect occurs because disclosure induces doubt in product quality and persists when more objective information is available, irrespective of disclosure specificity, across product categories and even after product trial.

Effective Refractory Periods In The Right Atrium In Patients With Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia, Takashi Tokano, Yuji Nakazato, Kaoru Komatsu, Takeshi Suzuki

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Introduction: Atrial flutter and fibrillation (AFL/AF) are frequently induced in patients with atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT), however, its mechanism is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics of effective refractory periods in the right atrium (RA) in patients with AVNRT. Methods and Results: In 26 patients with typical AVNRT (21 female, mean 46-year-old), AFL/AF was induced in 9 (35%) patients during an electrophysiologic study before slow pathway (SP) ablation. The atrial effective refractory periods (A-ERP) were measured at the high, mid and low lateral wall in the RA, the high and mid RA septum, and the …
