AmpC, a class C β-lactamase, is a main cause of antibiotic resistance to cephalosporins in many species of bacteria. The current proposed mechanism of action involves an acyl-intermediate, where the enzyme becomes covalently attached to the drug at serine-64, before an activated water hydrolyzes the bond and regenerates the enzyme. Although this mechanism is generally accepted, the exact roles that the other active site residues play in recognition and breakdown of the substrate are not fully understood. Here, we investigate the role of the active site residue asparagine-152 (Asn152) in E. coli AmpC by mutating it to a glycine, serine, …

Sexism In Practice: Feminist Ethics Evaluating The Hookup Culture, Conor M. Kelly
Sexism In Practice: Feminist Ethics Evaluating The Hookup Culture, Conor M. Kelly
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Hooking up—the practice of pursuing sexual activity without any expectation of a relationship—has become a fixture of the U.S. college experience, resulting in an identifiable hookup culture across the country that can and should benefit from a feminist analysis. Sociological research reveals that this practice appeals to college students by ostensibly providing greater independence than traditional relationships. An outside analysis of these claims, however, demonstrates that the heterosexual hookup culture operates in a decidedly sexist fashion. In fact, the four common features of this culture: lack of commitment, ambiguous language, alcohol use, and social pressure to conform, all undermine the …

Bands With High Symmetry And Uniform Bands, Justin Albert
Bands With High Symmetry And Uniform Bands, Justin Albert
Dissertations (1934 -)
In this dissertation we will be focused on determining classes of bands which are embeddable into some band with high symmetry. It is known that rectangular bands have high symmetry and every semilattice is embeddable into a semilattice with high symmetry. We will try to expand on these classes as much as possible. We first discuss properties of classes of semigroups in which every semigroup either has high symmetry or is embeddable into a semigroup with high symmetry. We show that normal bands are embeddable into normal bands with high symmetry and also that the bands, free in the class of …
Sacrament And Eschatological Fulfillment In Henri De Lubac's Theology Of History, Joseph Flipper
Sacrament And Eschatological Fulfillment In Henri De Lubac's Theology Of History, Joseph Flipper
Dissertations (1934 -)
Henri de Lubac, S.J. (1896-1991) led one of the most important developments within twentieth-century Catholic theology, the movement known as the nouvelle théologie. De Lubac's signature move was to return to early church sources to renew contemporary theology. This dissertation explores de Lubac's recovery of patristic eschatology for the contemporary age. While certainly responding to secularization, de Lubac also sought to respond to the "messianic" and apocalyptic shape of modern religious experience and political ideology. He argued that the source of secular messianisms was a dictotomy within Christianity between mysticism and the apocalyptic. The nouvelle théologie movement of the 1940s--from …

"Be-Holde The First Acte Of This Tragedy" : Generic Symbiosis And Cross-Pollination In Jacobean Drama And The Early Modern Prose Novella, Karen Ann Zyck Galbraith
Dissertations (1934 -)
The role of the early modern novella in the formation of Jacobean drama has been consistently understated in literary criticism. Source study and independent criticism of Elizabethan prose fiction, the two most common areas in which these novellas are discussed, are as quick to reference these works as they are to dismiss them. Using a primarily intertextual lens, it is the purpose of this dissertation to expose the rich relationship between early modern English, Italian, and Spanish novellas and their Jacobean dramatic counterparts. Specifically, my dissertation seeks to examine the deep thematic influences of the early modern novella on Jacobean …
Regulation Of System Xc- And Its Contribution To Cell Death, Xiaoqian Liu
Regulation Of System Xc- And Its Contribution To Cell Death, Xiaoqian Liu
Dissertations (1934 -)
The main focus of the studies in this thesis involves examining the role of cystine/glutamate exchange (system xC-) in neuronal death in primary cortical cell culture, with an emphasis on how glial function affects neuronal cell death. System xC- is a sodium-independent transporter that mediates cystine uptake and glutamate release. It accounts for most of the cystine uptake in astrocytes in mature cultures, providing the rate limiting substrate for synthesis of the main endogenous antioxidant glutathione. The glutamate released by system xC- may lead to excessive extracellular glutamate and cause excitotoxicity.
β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is a non-protein amino acid that may …
Myosin Isoforms And Regulation Of Tonic And Phasic Contraction In Smooth Muscle, Qian Huang
Myosin Isoforms And Regulation Of Tonic And Phasic Contraction In Smooth Muscle, Qian Huang
Dissertations (1934 -)
The contractile properties of smooth muscle (SM) are broadly classified as tonic and phasic. Among the hypothesized underlying regulatory mechanisms for this difference is the different actomyosin ATPase kinetic properties of SM SMA/SMB myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms and the preferential expression of SMA and SMB MHC isoforms in tonic and phasic SM respectively. Thus, we hypothesized that SM SMA/B MHC expression determines tonic and phasic contractile patterns in SM.
To test the this hypothesis, the role of SMA and SMB MHC isoforms in tonic and phasic contractions was studied in phasic (longitudinal ileum and stomach circular antrum) and tonic …
Spectral Characterization Of Cytochromes P450 Active Site And Catalytic Intermediates, Daniel Kaluka
Spectral Characterization Of Cytochromes P450 Active Site And Catalytic Intermediates, Daniel Kaluka
Dissertations (1934 -)
Cytochromes P450 (P450s) have been the subject of intense research for over six decades. Though it is widely accepted that a highly reactive Fe(IV)=O π-cation radical, or the so called compound I, facilitates the oxidation of relatively inert hydrocarbons, spectroscopic characterization of this putative intermediate has eluded detection under turnover conditions, presumably due to its very short lifetime. In this work, chemically inert substrates of P450s have been utilized in a new approach to capture and stabilize this transient intermediate and characterize it with resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy, which is a well established tool for studying heme proteins. Specifically, perfluorodecanoic …
Girls "In Trouble": A History Of Female Adolescent Sexuality In The Midwest, 1946-1964, Charissa Keup
Girls "In Trouble": A History Of Female Adolescent Sexuality In The Midwest, 1946-1964, Charissa Keup
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation attempts to show how Americans reacted to adolescent female sexuality, looking specifically at unwed school-age pregnancy in the post-World War Two decades. It documents the origins of the transition of the conversation about unwed teens from caring for them in maternity homes and boarding houses to discussing their problems on television shows and in popular magazines. Teenage sexual delinquency and pregnancy have always raised innumerable questions about American culture and values. Because they challenged the traditional concept of motherhood, they offer a lens through which to study American sexuality and reveal that an alternate 1950s existed beyond the …
The Humanistic, Fideistic Philosophy Of Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560), Charles William Peterson
The Humanistic, Fideistic Philosophy Of Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560), Charles William Peterson
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation examines the way Philip Melanchthon, author of the Augsburg Confession and Martin Luther's closest co-worker, sought to establish the relationship between faith and reason in the cradle of the Lutheran tradition, Wittenberg University. While Melanchthon is widely recognized to have played a crucial role in the Reformation of the Church in the sixteenth century as well as in the Renaissance in Northern Europe, he has in general received relatively little scholarly attention, few have attempted to explore his philosophy in depth, and those who have examined his philosophical work have come to contradictory or less than helpful conclusions …
Lateral-Mode Vibration Of Microcantilever-Based Sensors In Viscous Fluids Using Timoshenko Beam Theory, Joshua Schultz
Lateral-Mode Vibration Of Microcantilever-Based Sensors In Viscous Fluids Using Timoshenko Beam Theory, Joshua Schultz
Dissertations (1934 -)
Dynamic-mode microcantilever-based devices are well suited to biological and chemical sensing applications. However, these applications often necessitate liquid-phase sensing, introducing significant fluid-induced dissipative forces and reducing device quality factors (Q). Recent experimental and analytical research has shown that higher in- fluidQis achieved by exciting microcantilevers in the lateral flexural mode. However, the experimental results show that, for microcantilevers having larger width-to-length (b/L) ratios, the behaviors predicted by current analytical models differ from measurements.
To more accurately model microcantilever resonant behavior in viscous fluids and to improve understanding of lateral-mode sensor performance, a new analytical model is developed, incorporating both viscous …
Dominus Mortis: Martin Luther On The Incorruptibility Of God In Christ, David Luy
Dominus Mortis: Martin Luther On The Incorruptibility Of God In Christ, David Luy
Dissertations (1934 -)
Contemporary literature broadly presupposes that Luther's Christology represents a definitive course correction within Christian reflection upon the doctrine of God. The hinge point of Luther's innovation, according to this understanding, resides in his apparent endorsement of a mutual transfer of predicates between the divine and human nature of Christ. This mutuality represents a significant radicalization of pre-existing theological opinion, which is content to affirm the statement `God suffers', for instance, only in the carefully restricted sense that Christ (who happens to be divine) suffers according to His human nature. According to this more traditional explanation, it is not the divinity …
Online Education: The Impact Of Economics And Politics On Teacher's Situationally Constrained Choice, Rhianan Elizabeth Smith
Online Education: The Impact Of Economics And Politics On Teacher's Situationally Constrained Choice, Rhianan Elizabeth Smith
Dissertations (1934 -)
Online education has been increasing at an astounding rate, and advocates contend this trend will transform schooling as we know it. The current research has been centered on the student outcomes in online education. However, this myopic focus on outcomes underestimates the broader systemic factors that may be driving the implementation and everyday practices which impact student outcomes.
This study investigates the economic, political, and organizational factors that influence the situationally constrained choices of an online teacher. This study identifies the ways in which higher education budgets, policies, and technological resources impact what teachers do in the classroom while investigating …
Spirit Of The Psyche: Carl Jung's And Victor White's Influence On Flannery O'Connor's Fiction, Paul Wakeman
Spirit Of The Psyche: Carl Jung's And Victor White's Influence On Flannery O'Connor's Fiction, Paul Wakeman
Dissertations (1934 -)
Flannery O'Connor's interest in depth psychology, especially as it was presented by Carl Jung and Victor White, a Dominican priest and a "founding member of the C. G. Jung Institute," plays a greater role in her fiction than has been previously noted. O'Connor found parallels with Jung's theory of the unconscious and Catholic dogma, but ultimately found White's Catholicized presentation of the unconscious, which equated the unconscious psyche with the soul, more amenable to her faith.
This research first highlights the attention O'Connor gave to Jung's and White's theories of the unconscious as found in her public lectures, her personal …
Functional Integration In The Cortical Neuronal Network Of Conscious And Anesthetized Animals, Jeannette A. Vizuete
Functional Integration In The Cortical Neuronal Network Of Conscious And Anesthetized Animals, Jeannette A. Vizuete
Dissertations (1934 -)
General anesthesia consists of amnesia, analgesia, areflexia and unconsciousness. How anesthetics suppress consciousness has been a mystery for more than one and a half centuries.
The overall goal of my research has been to determine the neural correlates of anesthetic-induced loss of consciousness. I hypothesized that anesthetics induce unconsciousness by interfering with the functional connectivity of neuronal networks of the brain and consequently, reducing the brain's capacity for information processing. To test this hypothesis, I performed experiments in which neuronal spiking activity was measured with chronically implanted microelectrode arrays in the visual cortex of freely-moving rats during wakefulness and at …
Photochemical Eilmination Reactions Via Zwitterionic Intermediates Generated By Electrocyclic Ring Closures, Majher Ibna Mannan Sarker
Photochemical Eilmination Reactions Via Zwitterionic Intermediates Generated By Electrocyclic Ring Closures, Majher Ibna Mannan Sarker
Dissertations (1934 -)
The research focuses on the design of photoremovable protecting groups that can be used to deprotect biological substrates of an organic compound by photolysis. The deprotection of the protecting group via photolysis requires heterolysis of a bond to the substrate. Heterolysis of a C-O or C-S σ-bonds in a zwitterionic intermediate is proposed. The photochemical electrocyclic reactions studied involve acrylanilides, benzothiophene carboxanilides, and N-(9-oxothioxanthenyl) benzothiophene carboxamides. α,β-Unsaturated anilides bearing leaving groups at the allylic position of the α-methylacrylamide group undergo photochemical electrocyclic ring closure with release of leaving group which could occur directly from a photochemically produced zwitterionic intermediate or …
Corticosterone-Induced Potentiation Of Cocaine Seeking: A Potential Role For Organic Cation Transporter 3, Evan N. Graf
Corticosterone-Induced Potentiation Of Cocaine Seeking: A Potential Role For Organic Cation Transporter 3, Evan N. Graf
Dissertations (1934 -)
While it is known that stress plays a role in the relapse of cocaine-seeking behavior, recent studies demonstrate that stress may be acting as a "stage setter" rather than directly triggering further cocaine use. This model suggests stimuli that do not normally evoke relapse under stress-free conditions may result in drug seeking when the exposure occurs under stressful conditions. In this study, we examined the corticosterone-dependent potentiation of cocaine-induced reinstatement by a stressor, electric footshock (EFS), in rats following cocaine self-administration and extinction. We found that in rats with a history of drug exposure under low intake conditions, footshock alone …
Number Sense Mediated By Mathematics Self-Concept In Impacting Middle School Mathematics Achievement, Lara K. Geronime
Number Sense Mediated By Mathematics Self-Concept In Impacting Middle School Mathematics Achievement, Lara K. Geronime
Dissertations (1934 -)
The purpose of the current study was to extend the research on number sense to the middle school level and to simultaneously consider socioemotional elements related to the construct at this developmental stage. Its genesis was initially rooted in an ongoing and dramatic emphasis by U.S. policymakers, researchers, and educators on improving mathematics achievement in order to compete globally in technology and innovation. Despite debates about optimal curriculum and instruction, tremendous support exists for the construct of number sense. However, middle school research examining the phenomena has been limited to intervention protocols targeting specific skillsets and better measurement of its …

On The Verge Of Change: Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding, Mallary Taylor
On The Verge Of Change: Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding, Mallary Taylor
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis discusses the effects of war on the southern plantation lifestyle depicted in Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding. This thesis focuses on the female characters who adapt to the absence of the husbands during wartime. Wars are the catalyst for societal change in the novel, and the women must adapt to the new social changes that are encroaching upon the plantation. The chapters explore each individual reaction of female characters in the novel. The female characters in Delta Wedding represent varying wars of reacting to shifting social norms brought about by war.
Finding A Better Confidence Interval For A Single Regression Changepoint Using Different Bootstrap Confidence Interval Procedures, Bodhipaksha Thilakarathne
Finding A Better Confidence Interval For A Single Regression Changepoint Using Different Bootstrap Confidence Interval Procedures, Bodhipaksha Thilakarathne
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Recently a number of papers have been published in the area of regression changepoints but there is not much literature concerning confidence intervals for regression changepoints. The purpose of this paper is to find a better bootstrap confidence interval for a single regression changepoint. ("Better" confidence interval means having a minimum length and coverage probability which is close to a chosen significance level). Several methods will be used to find bootstrap confidence intervals. Among those methods a better confidence interval will be presented.
The Effects Of Locomotor Posture On Kinematics, Performance And Behavior During Obstacle Negotiation In Lizards, Jessica Self
The Effects Of Locomotor Posture On Kinematics, Performance And Behavior During Obstacle Negotiation In Lizards, Jessica Self
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The ability to efficiently move over uneven terrain is critical for most terrestrial animals. Bipedal running is common in lizard species, however the biological advantage of a bipedal running posture remains uncertain. I examined the hypothesis that a bipedal posture is advantageous when crossing obstacles. Particularly, I determined whether kinematic adjustments differ among four focal species with contrasting body forms and ecology. I also examined how sprint speed changed when crossing obstacles with a quadrupedal versus a bipedal posture. I quantified kinematics from high-speed video (300 frames/second) of lizards running down a 3m runway both with and without the presence …
Bird Use Of Cumberland Island's Freshwater Wetlands, Lisa Dlugolecki
Bird Use Of Cumberland Island's Freshwater Wetlands, Lisa Dlugolecki
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Cumberland Island is the southernmost barrier island off the coast of Georgia. Its freshwater wetlands are an important, rare habitat to have on a barrier island surrounded by saltmarsh and ocean. Many species of birds require freshwater wetlands as feeding, roosting and nesting grounds. However, the freshwater wetlands on Cumberland Island have been impacted by humans for centuries causing birds to abandon their historic nesting ground. Known land use histories of Cumberland Island's freshwater wetlands were gathered to try and determine how the wetlands changed over time Wetlands were analyzed for presence of wetland-dependent birds and recorded. Thirty-six species of …
A Comparison Of The Associative And Multiple Bearing Hypotheses Through Landmark Stability In Humans Using A Virtual Environment, Martha R. Forloines
A Comparison Of The Associative And Multiple Bearing Hypotheses Through Landmark Stability In Humans Using A Virtual Environment, Martha R. Forloines
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The current experiment investigated the mixed results seen in spatial blocking paradigms; there have been procedures that have shown and not shown blocking of added landmarks in the spatial domain. Typically, the Associative theory of learning has been applied to spatial learning. However, spatial blocking paradigms cannot be explained solely with this theory. The Multiple Bearings Hypothesis (MBH) may be able to explain these differences. The current experiment employed a three-phase blocking paradigm to examine what factors are responsible for the mixed results. The first Phase, Phase 0, incrementally shaped human participants' goal location behavior with two ambiguous landmarks. In …
