Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome., Abdo Bachoura, Sidney M Jacoby Oct 2012

Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome., Abdo Bachoura, Sidney M Jacoby

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Ulnar tunnel syndrome could be broadly defined as a compressive neuropathy of the ulnar nerve at the level of the wrist. The ulnar tunnel, or Guyon's canal, has a complex and variable anatomy. Various factors may precipitate the onset of ulnar tunnel syndrome. Patient presentation depends on the anatomic zone of ulnar nerve compression: zone I compression, motor and sensory signs and symptoms; zone II compression, isolated motor deficits; and zone III compression; purely sensory deficits. Conservative treatment such as activity modification may be helpful, but often, surgical exploration of the ulnar tunnel with subsequent ulnar nerve decompression is indicated.

Is Sea Level Rise Accelerating In The Chesapeake Bay? A Demonstation Of A Novel New Approach For Analyzing Sea Level Data, Tal Ezer, William Bryce Corlett Oct 2012

Is Sea Level Rise Accelerating In The Chesapeake Bay? A Demonstation Of A Novel New Approach For Analyzing Sea Level Data, Tal Ezer, William Bryce Corlett

CCPO Publications

Sea level data from the Chesapeake Bay are used to test a novel new analysis method for studies of sea level rise (SLR). The method, based on Empirical Mode Decomposition and Hilbert-Huang Transformation, separates the sea level trend from other oscillating modes and reveals how the mean sea level changes over time. Bootstrap calculations test the robustness of the method and provide confidence levels. The analysis shows that rates of SLR have increased from similar to 1-3 mm y(-1) in the 1930s to similar to 4-10 mm y(-1) in 2011, an acceleration of similar to 0.05-0.10 mm y(-2) that is …

Changing Role Of Senior Administrators, Kathleen Delong, Julie A. Garrison, Marianne Ryan

Books and Contributions to Books

In alignment with ARL’s strategic focus Transforming Research Libraries, designed to articulate, promote, and facilitate new and expanding roles for ARL libraries that enable and enrich the transformations affecting research and research-intensive education, this study has probed the nature of administrative positions that support accomplishing these objectives. The ongoing evolution within these organizations and the roles of those who work in them is mirrored in the administrative structure of the academic library. Two decades ago, it was largely the library director who managed the organization, perhaps with assistance from an associate in public and technical services, or from a single …

Developing Health Information Literacy: A Needs Analysis From The Perspective Of Preprofessional Health Students, Lana V. Ivanitskaya, Kaitlyn A. Hanisko, Julie A. Garrison, Samantha J. Janson, Danielle Vibbert Oct 2012

Developing Health Information Literacy: A Needs Analysis From The Perspective Of Preprofessional Health Students, Lana V. Ivanitskaya, Kaitlyn A. Hanisko, Julie A. Garrison, Samantha J. Janson, Danielle Vibbert

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Objective: The research identified the skills, if any, that health preprofessional students wished to develop after receiving feedback on skill gaps as well as any strategies they intended to use to address these gaps.

Methods: A qualitative approach was used to elicit students' reflections on building health information literacy skills. First, the students took the Research Readiness Self-Assessment instrument, which measured their health information literacy, and then they received individually tailored feedback about their scores and skill gaps. Second, students completed a post-assessment survey asking how they intended to close identified gaps in their skills on these. Three trained coders …

Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With Gamma-Ray Bursts During Ligo Science Run 6 And Virgo Science Runs 2 And 3, J. Abadie, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 154 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments in 2009-2010, during the sixth LIGO science run and the second and third Virgo science runs. We perform two distinct searches: a modeled search for coalescences of either two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, and a search for generic, unmodeled gravitational-wave bursts. We find no evidence for gravitational-wave counterparts, either with any individual GRB in this sample or with the population as a whole. For all GRBs we place lower bounds on the …

Personality As A Source Of Individual Differences In Cognition Among Older African Americans, Adrienne T. Aiken-Morgan, Jacqueline Michelle Bichsel, Jason C. Allaire, Jyoti Savla, Christopher L. Edwards, Keith E. Whitfield

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Previous research suggests that demographic factors are important correlates of cognitive functioning in African Americans; however, less attention has been given to the influence of personality. the present study explored how dimensions and facets of personality predicted individual variability in cognition in a sample of older African Americans from the Baltimore Study of Black Aging. Cognition was assessed by verbal learning and attention/working memory measures. Personality was measured by the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Linear regressions controlling for demographic factors showed that Neuroticism, Openness, and Agreeableness were significant regression predictors of cognitive performance. Individual facets of all five personality dimensions were …

Low Rate Of Infection Control In Enterococcal Periprosthetic Joint Infections., Mohammad R Rasouli, Mohan S Tripathi, Robert Kenyon, Nathan Wetters, Craig J Della Valle, Javad Parvizi

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Enterococcal periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are rare after joint arthroplasty. These cases are usually reported in series of PJIs caused by other pathogens. Because few studies have focused only on enterococcal PJIs, management and control of infection of these cases have not yet been well defined.

QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked (1) what is the proportion of enterococcal PJI in our institutes; and (2) what is the rate of infection control in these cases?

METHODS: We respectively identified 22 and 14 joints with monomicrobial and polymicrobial PJI, respectively, caused by enterococcus. The diagnosis of PJI was made based on the presence …

Screening The Effects Of Gene Overexpression On Markers Of Neural Progenitor Differentiation In The Developing Chick Spinal Cord., Joshua Lee, Merritt Taylor Oct 2012

Screening The Effects Of Gene Overexpression On Markers Of Neural Progenitor Differentiation In The Developing Chick Spinal Cord., Joshua Lee, Merritt Taylor

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

A central obstacle in stem cell biology is revealing signaling pathways that drive stem cells to mature into differentiated daughter cells or proliferate into more stem cells (self renewal). Some genes that promote self-‐renewal also promote some forms of cancer. A subpopulation of cells within solid tumors exhibit stem cell-‐like properties, including resistance to cell death and exhibiting self-‐renewal. Reviewing published databases of gene expression profiles for glioblastomas and neural stem cells (NSC), we identified genes shared in both populations, including the gene ZSCAN21. Utilizing the constitutively active intracellular domain of the Notch receptor (NICD) as a positive control and …

Articles

The transition period between care settings is the most vulnerable time for patients and their caregivers. The unique vulnerabilities for patients with mental illnesses such as depression, mania, anxiety, schizophrenia and/or substance use disorders* heighten the need for coordinated transitions and aftercare. In 2010, depression was the fourth diagnosis by volume for readmissions in Minnesota according to the Potentially Preventable Readmissions data collected by the Minnesota Hospital Association.

The City Upon A Hill: Boston As God’S Bulwark Against Piracy, 1630-1720, Kimberly Lorton

Student Honors Theses

As the Reverend Cotton Mather sat face to face with William Fly in 1726, a sailor brought into Boston harbor on charges of high piracy, he contemplated not how Fly’s crimes were a detriment to the commercial activity of New England but only how to save the man’s soul from the fires of hell. To do this he would preach to Fly for two weeks; essentially begging him to seek redemption through God. Much to the esteemed Reverend’s surprise, however, Fly would have none of it. The fear of death and eternal damnation would not move the man to confess …

The Importance Of Host Plant Limitation For Caterpillars Of An Arctiid Moth (Platyprepia Virginalis) Varies Spatially, Richard Karban, Patrick Grof-Tisza, John L. Maron, Marcel Holyoak

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Spatial dynamic theories such as source–sink models frequently describe habitat-specific demographies, yet there are surprisingly few field studies that have examined how and why interacting species vary in their dynamics across multiple habitat types. We studied the spatial pattern of interaction between a chewing herbivore and its primary larval host plant in two habitat types. We found that the interaction between an arctiid caterpillar (Platyprepia virginalis) and its host (Lupinus arboreus) differed in wet vs. upland dry habitats, as did yearly population dynamics for the caterpillar. In upland sites, there was a strong positive relationship between …

Neo-Allopatry And Rapid Reproductive Isolation, Daniel Montesinos, Gilberto Santiago, Ragan M. Callaway Oct 2012

Neo-Allopatry And Rapid Reproductive Isolation, Daniel Montesinos, Gilberto Santiago, Ragan M. Callaway

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Over the past 3 centuries, many species have been dispersed beyond their natural geographic limits by humans, but to our knowledge, reproductive isolation has not been demonstrated for such neo-allopatric species. We grew seeds from three species of Centaurea (Centaurea solstitialis, Centaurea calcitrapa, and Centaurea sulphurea) that are native to Spain and have been introduced into California, and we tested to what extent seed production was affected by pollen source. Compared with within-population crosses, seed production decreased by 52% and 44%, respectively, when C. solstitialis and C. sulphurea from California were pollinated with conspecific pollen from native populations in Spain. …

Students As Donors To University Archives: A Study Of Student Perceptions With Recommendations, Jessica Wagner, Debbi A. Smith

Publications and Research

Most of the literature that explores the relationship between students and university archives focuses on how to integrate archival materials into the undergraduate curriculum. Little exists that analyzes student perceptions of the types of materials that are found in archives; even less discusses how to induce students to donate materials that document life on campus. This case study examines student perceptions of various aspects of university archives, with the goal of developing better methods of reaching out to encourage donation of student life materials.

Can Consortial Reference Partners Answer Your Local Users’ Library Questions?, Bradley Wade Bishop Oct 2012

Can Consortial Reference Partners Answer Your Local Users’ Library Questions?, Bradley Wade Bishop

Information Science Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to explore location-based questions as a weakness of virtual reference consortia and discuss how to mitigate related issues. Content analysis of how both local and non-local academic librarians responded to location-based questions provides insight into considerations academic libraries must make when participating in a virtual reference consortia. Unobtrusive testing analyzed the local knowledge assumption that non-local librarians have difficulty answering questions about libraries beyond their own. The results from these two methods indicate academic librarians have some difficulties providing responses to library location-based questions and a discussion on overcoming this weakness is included.

The Delaware Death Penalty: An Empirical Study, Sheri Johnson, John H. Blume, Theodore Eisenberg, Valerie P. Hans, Martin T. Wells

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

For the last five years, we have conducted an empirical study of the “modern era” of capital punishment in Delaware. By “modern era,” we refer to the time period after the Supreme Court’s 1972 decision in Furman v.Georgia, which invalidated all then-existing state death penalty regimes. Some readers might ask, “Why Delaware?” They might observe that it is a small state and is not a significant national player in terms of death sentences imposed or death row inmates executed. While both are true, several features of Delaware’s capital punishment system intrigue us. First, Delaware has a high death sentencing rate. …

It Takes A Village: Municipal Condemnation Proceedings And Public/Private Partnerships For Mortgage Loan Modification, Value Preservation, And Local Economic Recovery, Robert C. Hockett Oct 2012

It Takes A Village: Municipal Condemnation Proceedings And Public/Private Partnerships For Mortgage Loan Modification, Value Preservation, And Local Economic Recovery, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Respected real estate analysts forecast that the U.S. is now poised to experience a renewed round of home mortgage foreclosures over the coming six years. Up to eleven million underwater mortgages will be affected. Neither our families, our neighborhoods, nor our state and national economies can bear a resumption of crisis on this order of magnitude.

I argue that ongoing and self-worsening slump in the primary and secondary mortgage markets is rooted in a host of recursive collective action challenges structurally akin to those that brought on the real estate bubble and bust in the first place. Collective action problems …

Not Your Parents' Law Library: A Tale Of Two Academic Law Libraries, Julian Aiken, Femi Cadmus, Fred Shapiro

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

As academic law libraries continue to face the inevitability of a rapidly changing landscape which includes a new breed of digital users with sophisticated technological needs, it remains to be seen what libraries will look like in years to come. It is certain that libraries as we know them today will have changed, but to what extent? An ability to remain adaptable and to anticipate the evolving needs of users in a dynamic environment will continue to be key for libraries to remain relevant, and even to survive, in the 21st century; vital to this endeavor will also be an …

Status and Trends for Virginia Chesapeake Bay

The period prior to the implementation of the Chesapeake Bay Monitoring Program was characterized by a marked decline in the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. The disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation in certain regions of the Bay, declines in the abundance of some commercially and recreationally important species, increases in the incidence of low dissolved oxygen events, changes in the Bay's food web, and other ecological problems have been related to the deteriorating water quality (e.g. USEPA, 1982,1983;Officer et al.,1984; Orth and Moore, 1984). The results of concentrated research efforts in the late 1970s and early 1980s stimulated the …

Confronting The Careless University, Byron White

eJournal of Public Affairs

In a keynote address at the American Democracy Project conference in June of 2012, Byron P. White argued that despite good intentions, there are powerful forces within institutions that “challenge our best efforts at democratic engagement.” He described a series of disconnects between communities and institutions that must be overcome to fulfill the promise of a university that cares about the community in which it is embedded. Because of the importance and timeliness of the address, the editors chose to publish the speech almost as it was given without peer review.
