Geotraveler Tendencies In Montana's Shoulder And Winter Seasons , Christine Oschell Oct 2012

Geotraveler Tendencies In Montana's Shoulder And Winter Seasons , Christine Oschell

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

After two initial studies on geotourism in Montana (Boley, 2009; Boyle, 2012) confirmed the presence of geotravelers in the third quarter of both the Crown of the Continent region and throughout the state of Montana, research interest turned to visitors during the remainder of the quarters, or seasons. This study looked statewide at all visitors and, more narrowly, vacationers, in the “shoulder” and winter season (quarters 1, 2, 4) to determine their geotourist tendencies.

On Lattices Of Varieties Of Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones Oct 2012

On Lattices Of Varieties Of Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The left restriction semigroups have arisen in a number of contexts, one being as the abstract characterization of semigroups of partial maps, another as the ‘weakly left E-ample’ semigroups of the ‘York school’, and, more recently as a variety of unary semigroups defined by a set of simple identities. We initiate a study of the lattice of varieties of such semigroups and, in parallel, of their two-sided versions, the restriction semigroups. Although at the very bottom of the respective lattices the behaviour is akin to that of varieties of inverse semigroups, more interesting features are soon found in the …

Random Fields At A Nonequilibrium Phase Transition, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta Oct 2012

Random Fields At A Nonequilibrium Phase Transition, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study nonequilibrium phase transitions in the presence of disorder that locally breaks the symmetry between two equivalent macroscopic states. In low-dimensional equilibrium systems, such random-field disorder is known to have dramatic effects: it prevents spontaneous symmetry breaking and completely destroys the phase transition. In contrast, we show that the phase transition of the one-dimensional generalized contact process persists in the presence of random-field disorder. The ultraslow dynamics in the symmetry-broken phase is described by a Sinai walk of the domain walls between two different absorbing states. We discuss the generality and limitations of our theory, and we illustrate our …

Chemical Proteomics-Based Analysis Of Off-Target Binding Profiles For Rosiglitazone And Pioglitazone: Clues For Assessing Potential For Cardiotoxicity, Brian R. Hoffmann, Mohamed F. El-Mansy, Daniel S. Sem, Andrew S. Greene Oct 2012

Greene

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Drugs exert desired and undesired effects based on their binding interactions with protein target(s) and off-target(s), providing evidence for drug efficacy and toxicity. Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone possess a common functional core, glitazone, which is considered a privileged scaffold upon which to build a drug selective for a given target—in this case, PPARγ. Herein, we report a retrospective analysis of two variants of the glitazone scaffold, pioglitazone and rosiglitazone, in an effort to identify off-target binding events in the rat heart to explain recently reported cardiovascular risk associated with these drugs. Our results suggest that glitazone has affinity for dehydrogenases, consistent …

Structural, Spectroscopic, And Electrochemical Properties Of Nonheme Fe(Ii)-Hydroquinonate Complexes: Synthetic Models Of Hydroquinone Dioxygenases, Amanda E. Baum, Heaweon Park, Denan Wang, Sergey V. Lindeman, Adam T. Fiedler Oct 2012

Structural, Spectroscopic, And Electrochemical Properties Of Nonheme Fe(Ii)-Hydroquinonate Complexes: Synthetic Models Of Hydroquinone Dioxygenases, Amanda E. Baum, Heaweon Park, Denan Wang, Sergey V. Lindeman, Adam T. Fiedler

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Using the tris(3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl)borate (Ph2Tp) supporting ligand, a series of mono- and dinuclear ferrous complexes containing hydroquinonate (HQate) ligands have been prepared and structurally characterized with X-ray crystallography. The monoiron(II) complexes serve as faithful mimics of the substrate-bound form of hydroquinone dioxygenases (HQDOs) – a family of nonheme Fe enzymes that catalyze the oxidative cleavage of 1,4-dihydroxybenzene units. Reflecting the variety of HQDO substrates, the synthetic complexes feature both mono- and bidentate HQate ligands. The bidentate HQates cleanly provide five-coordinate, high-spin Fe(II) complexes with the general formula [Fe(Ph2Tp)(HLX)] (1X), where HLX is …

Experimental Documentation Of The Structural Consequences Of Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions To The Proximal Cysteine Of A Cytochrome P450, Piotr J. Mak, Yuting Yang, Sangchoul Im, Lucy A. Waskell, James R. Kincaid Oct 2012

Kincaid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Resonance Raman spectroscopy is used to document, for the first time, a 6 cm−1 decrease of the Fe-S stretch by introducing an H-bond donor into the proximal pocket of a cytochrome P450, which interacts with the key cysteine thiolate axial ligand. The anticipated trans-effect on bound exogenous ligands is also confirmed and evidence is obtained supporting intimate interaction of the new histidyl-imidazole fragment with the heme periphery.

Counting Drone Strike Deaths, Human Rights Clinic Oct 2012

Counting Drone Strike Deaths, Human Rights Clinic

Human Rights Institute

Popular debate on U.S. drone strikes often centers on how many individuals are killed, and which of two categories the individuals killed fall into – militant or civilian. U.S. officials emphasize the precision of drone technology and contend that extremely few civilians have been killed. Yet others have questioned these claims and stated that there is evidence to suggest that deaths, and civilian deaths in particular, are much higher than U.S. officials admit.

The uncertainty about civilian deaths is largely due to the U.S. government’s resistance to openly providing information about strikes. In the absence of official data, the most …

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications

From October 1-5, 2012, a working group of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) met in Vienna to continue work on how to ensure transparency in treaty-based investor-state arbitration. It was the working group’s fifth week-long meeting on the topic, but will not be the last. Although some issues were settled, many very significant ones remain contentious, and will be picked up again by the working group when it meets in February 2013.

Computing Perception From Sensor Data, Payam Barnaghi, Frieder Ganz, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth Oct 2012

Computing Perception From Sensor Data, Payam Barnaghi, Frieder Ganz, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper describes a framework for perception creation from sensor data. We propose using data abstraction techniques, in particular Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (SAX), to analyse and create patterns from sensor data. The created patterns are then linked to semantic descriptions that define thematic, spatial and temporal features, providing highly granular abstract representation of the raw sensor data. This helps to reduce the size of the data that needs to be communicated from the sensor nodes to the gateways or highlevel processing components. We then discuss a method that uses abstract patterns created by SAX method and occurrences of different observations …

Visions Of World War I: Through The Eyes Of Käthe Kollwitz And Otto Dix, Leona Catherine Sargent Oct 2012

Visions Of World War I: Through The Eyes Of Käthe Kollwitz And Otto Dix, Leona Catherine Sargent

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

Visions of World War I: Through the Eyes of Käthe Kollwitz and Otto Dix focuses on the war related work produced by Käthe Kollwitz and Otto Dix from 1914 to the early 1930s. Kollwitz depicted the heartache experienced by those who lost loved ones in the Great War, while Dix illustrated the death and destruction encountered by soldiers in the trenches. This essay examines the reception of both artist’s work during the 1920s, as well as the motivation behind the works, including the therapeutic qualities associated with the creative process.
