Sexual Stereotypes In Older Adulthood, Ruth V. Walker, Emily L. Bohnert, Kaitlyn B. Demoss Apr 2025

Sexual Stereotypes In Older Adulthood, Ruth V. Walker, Emily L. Bohnert, Kaitlyn B. Demoss

Essays in Developmental Psychology

The most prevalent stereotype about sexuality in older adulthood is that older adults do not have or want to have sex. This is often due to ageist attitudes whereby older adult sexuality is viewed with disgust. The reality is that older adults continue to engage in sexual activity, and broaden their conceptualization of sexual behavior, into their 70s, 80s, and beyond. In fact, sexual activity is often reported as an integral part of the lives of older adults.

Depression In Older Adulthood, Ruth V. Walker, Danielle N. Capone-Wash

Essays in Developmental Psychology

Depression is not an inevitable part of the aging process. The Center for Disease Control reports the prevalence for depression is 5.4% in adults 60 years and older, significantly lower than rates in middle-aged (9.8%) and younger adults (7.4%). Although prevalence rates of depression in older adults are relatively low, research suggests symptoms of depression that do not meet diagnostic criteria are experienced by 19-39% of older adults. Additionally, prevalence rates for older adults residing in nursing homes are 49%. This may be due to the high comorbidity, or coexistence, of depression and physical illnesses such as diabetes, stroke, cancer, …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Student Publications

Future Martian settlements require sustainable agricultural methods for long-duration missions. Surface soil conditions on the red planet are clay like and lacking in easy access nutrients for plants. Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria (PGPB) could aid agriculture on mars the same way they do on Earth. The bacteria strains selected were collected on the ISS by the NASA’s Vegetable production program (VEGGIE). I hypothesize that these PGPB can aid plant growth in L. sativa via seed inoculation in Martian regolith.

In many aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, iron (Fe) reduction by microorganisms is a key part of biogeochemical cycling and energy flux. The presence of redox-active electron shuttles in the environment potentially enables a phylogenetically diverse group of microbes to use insoluble iron as a terminal electron acceptor. We investigated the impact that different electron shuttles had on respiration, microbial physiology, and microbial ecology. We tested eight different electron shuttles, seven quinones and riboflavin, with redox potentials between 0.217 and −0.340 V. Fe(III) reduction coupled with acetate oxidation was observed with all shuttles. Once Fe(III) reduction began to plateau, a rapid …

Wisdom, Victor Tran, Lisa K. Lashley, Charles J. Golden

Essays in Developmental Psychology

Historically, wisdom (sagacity) has its roots tied to religious traditions. From India’s Vedas, to Egyptian proverbs, and to Christian and Islamic psalms, various religions have attempted to define wisdom and have professed the importance of fostering it. While these contributions to the understanding of wisdom cannot be ignored, it was not until philosophers intervened that the world began to attempt to systematically define and analyze wisdom as its own construct.

Wimmer And Perner 1983, Alexandra Daro, Jonathan B. Santo

Essays in Developmental Psychology

False beliefs occur when individuals are unaware of a change in a situation that makes their beliefs different from reality. Children developing a theory of mind learn to distinguish their own beliefs about a situation from other individuals’ beliefs about the same situation. Through this process, children move away from assuming their thoughts are shared by everyone in their day to day experiences (an egocentric perspective normal to this developmental stage), and toward an understanding of others as individuals with minds, thoughts, and beliefs separate from their own.
