From Dysbiosis To Dysfunction: Investigating The Effects Of Chronic Cocaine Use On Oral Microbial Shifts And Neuropathogenesis, Douglas E. Johnson

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Cocaine use disorder remains a significant public health challenge. However, the mechanisms by which chronic cocaine use contributes to neuroinflammation and cognitive decline are still not fully understood. Chronic non-intravenous cocaine use is associated with oral microbial dysbiosis. Although the gut-brain axis has been widely studied, the impact of cocaine-mediated shifts on the oral microbiome on systemic and neuroinflammation remains a significant yet largely unexplored gap. This dissertation investigates the hypothesis that cocaine-specifically enriched oral Streptococcus parasanguinis triggers neuroinflammation, neuropathology, and cognitive deficits. In a human study, the saliva microbiomes from chronic cocaine users exhibited reduced α-diversity, enriched Streptococcus genus, …

Asymmetric Effects Of The Ebbinghaus Illusion On Relative Depth Judgments In A Perceptual Matching Task, Caden J. Thompson

Honors Theses

The Ebbinghaus illusion, also know as Titchner Circles, is a perceptual illusion that is typically presented as a two-dimensional set of disks. These disks are configured as a central disk surrounded by an annulus of smaller or larger disks. Numerous studies have found the illusion to have an effect on size perception, but fewer studies have analyzed its effects on depth judgments. This study utilized a head-worn virtual reality environment as well as a three-dimensional display to examine the effects of the Ebbinghaus illusion on relative depth judgments in a perceptual matching task. Findings indicated that Ebbinghaus configurations featuring an …

Articles

Tasks in augmented reality (AR), such as 3D interaction and instructional comprehension, are often designed for users with uniform sensory abilities. Such an approach, however, can overlook the more nuanced needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) users who might have reduced auditory perception. To better understand these challenges, our study utilized the single-player AR game Angry Birds AR as a probe to explore how 11 DHH participants and 15 hearing participants experienced AR interactions. Our findings highlight that DHH users prefer interaction based on context, effective haptic cues, audio cue substitutes, and clear instructional design. We, therefore, propose …
