Parental Deprivation: The Impact Of Parental Leave Policy On Infant Attachment, Development, And Posterity, Grace E. Snyder
Parental Deprivation: The Impact Of Parental Leave Policy On Infant Attachment, Development, And Posterity, Grace E. Snyder
Senior Honors Theses
This literature review evaluates the lack of paid parental leave policy in the United States through the lens of attachment theory. While attachment theory has been extensively studied in the fields of Psychology and Social Work, a lack of research has been conducted to connect this theory to parental leave policy. The literature review examines parental leave policy and attachment theory along with how these topics connect. Social work is a profession that values the importance of human relationships and social justice, so understanding this relationship is important in forming the disciplinary knowledge upon which evidence-based advocacy is built.

Awakening A Patient With Congenital Deafness From General Anesthesia, Christopher Wojcik, Ramsis F. Ghaly, Chu-Yin Yeh
Awakening A Patient With Congenital Deafness From General Anesthesia, Christopher Wojcik, Ramsis F. Ghaly, Chu-Yin Yeh
Advocate GME
Introduction: Emergence from general anesthesia signifies the waning of the anesthetic effect and the recovery of consciousness. After general anesthesia, one criterion for extubation is the ability to follow simple commands. The ability to follow commands demonstrates that the patient has adequate consciousness, can protect their airway, and can coordinate basic movements, which suggests an ET tube can be safely removed. Congenital deafness thus presents an obstacle for the Anesthesiologist to communicate with a patient as they awaken from general anesthesia. Case Presentation: A 44-year-old female with a history of congenital deafness and bilateral DCIS S/P bilateral mastectomy presents for …

Converting Intravenous To Oral Ketamine In A Cancer Palliative Patient, Aisha Patel, Rishi Gaiha, Isabel Rao Shuai, Nebojsa Nick Knezevic
Advocate GME
Introduction: Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that was first developed in the 1960s as a safer pharmacological alternative to phencyclidine [1]. Its primary mechanism of action involves inhibiting the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor which disrupts excitatory neurotransmission in the superficial dorsal horn [2]. This unique property not only provides sedation during anesthesia but also yields some analgesic and antidepressant effects. While ketamine is commonly administered intravenously, its use in the oral form remains limited due to its variable bioavailability and extensive first-pass metabolism. These challenges have hindered the widespread adoption of oral ketamine. As a result, there is a clear need …

Introduction: Allergies to local anesthetics (LAs) are rare [1] but can present significant challenges in patient management, particularly for laboring patients seeking neuraxial analgesia. While there is limited cross-reactivity between amide and ester LAs, significant cross-reactivity can occur within the same class, especially among ester LAs. This case illustrates a safe approach to testing and administering LAs in a patient with an allergy to an unknown LA. Case Presentation: This case involves a 20-year-old female, G1P0 at 40 weeks and 0 days gestation, with a medical history of gestational hypertension and obesity (BMI 36), who was admitted to the labor …
Corporate Governance And Environmental Citizenship In Global Hospitality: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Leonard A. Jackson
Corporate Governance And Environmental Citizenship In Global Hospitality: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Leonard A. Jackson
Faculty Articles
The hospitality industry’s global reach and resource-intensive operations have placed it under growing scrutiny for environmental impact. This empirical study examines how corporate governance influences corporate environmental citizenship (CEC) among eight major hotel companies across North America, Europe, and Asia from 2020 to 2023. Drawing on agency, stakeholder, institutional, and legitimacy theories, the study hypothesizes that stronger governance—measured by board independence, separation of CEO and Chair roles (non-duality), and ownership concentration—positively relates to environmental performance. A panel dataset of 32 firm-year observations is analyzed using regression models. The results show that higher board independence and greater ownership concentration are associated …

Introduction: Coronavirus-19-Disease (COVID-19) gripped the world starting in 2019. New vaccines, regulations, and mandates have been implemented, and the virus itself continues to be studied. A fearful comorbidity that often leads to mortality is the hypercoagulable state COVID-19 induces. According to the American Society of Hematology, patients with COVID-19 are at increased risk of thrombotic complications, despite the in-hospital use of standard- or escalated-dose thromboprophylaxis [1]. While critical illness is known to cause a hypercoagulable state due to immobilization, mechanical ventilation, central venous access devices, and nutritional deficiencies, COVID-19 appears to cause a hypercoagulable state through mechanisms unique to SARS-CoV-2 …

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, affecting 0.4–1.0% of the global population [1], with a rising prevalence. AF is associated with a 1.5 to 2-fold increased risk of mortality, a 2.4-fold higher risk of stroke, and an elevated risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease [2]. Current evidence supports the use of general anesthesia (GA) for most AF ablation procedures, as it enhances patient comfort, improves the accuracy of electrical mapping, allows for more precise catheter manipulation, and increases ablation success rates [2,3]. The most common life-threatening complication of AF ablation is cardiac perforation …
Metabolic And Microbial Crossroads: Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors And Urinary Tract Infections In (Asian) Diabetes Care, Rob E. Carpenter
Metabolic And Microbial Crossroads: Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors And Urinary Tract Infections In (Asian) Diabetes Care, Rob E. Carpenter
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
The global rise of type 2 diabetes, particularly in Asian populations, has led to widespread adoption of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for glycemic control. While effective, these agents elevate the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by inducing glycosuria, which creates a nutrient-rich environment that favors uropathogen growth. Asian individuals may be disproportionately vulnerable to SGLT2 inhibitor–associated UTIs due to a confluence of factors, including lower body mass index, increased visceral adiposity, congenital urinary tract anomalies, and genetic polymorphisms that impair uroepithelial integrity and immunity. This review integrates emerging evidence on the molecular, anatomical, and immunometabolic mechanisms that underlie infection …

Who Carries Bear Spray? Reducing Risk In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Through Leave No Trace Communication, Anna B. Miller, Clara-Jane Blye, Jennifer Newton, Lauren Miller, Jacob Richards
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
As bear populations increase in areas like the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), human-bear interactions are rising, with grizzly bear encounters more than doubling in the past decade. To reduce conflicts, land management agencies promote Leave No Trace (LNT) behaviors, emphasizing bear awareness, proper food storage, maintaining distance from wildlife, and carrying bear spray. However, a survey of 566 visitors across the GYE found that 27% of respondents report never carrying bear spray. Non-carriers were often first-time visitors, traveling in larger groups, or day-use visitors to front-country areas. They also viewed the message to carry bear spray as less important than …

Introduction: Lead extraction is an essential component of cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) management, particularly as the number of implanted devices continues to rise. While over 500,000 implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) have been implanted in the U.S. since 2010, lead extractions remain relatively infrequent, with an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 procedures performed annually worldwide. Complications, though rare, can be life-threatening. Case Presentation: A 76-year-old male with a history of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), non-sustained ventricular tachycardia, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (s/p Watchman device and cryoablation), and multiple comorbidities underwent an ICD lead extraction for a malfunctioning right ventricular (RV) dual-coil lead. Proceeding With Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Following Cardiac Arrest During Anesthesia Induction, Mohammed Rashid, Arjang Khorasani
Advocate GME
Introduction: Cardiac arrest following induction of anesthesia is a rare but serious event that significantly increases morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program indicates that approximately 3% of cardiac surgery patients undergo cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following cardiac arrest [1]. However, the exact incidence of arrests occurring specifically after the induction of general anesthesia remains unknown. This presents a challenging decision: whether to proceed with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) following a peri-induction arrest or to cancel the procedure. Case Presentation: An 80-year-old male with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and …

Propofol-Induced Green Discoloration Of Breast Milk: A Case Report, Hamad A. Hussain, Nebojsa Nick Knezevic
Advocate GME
Introduction: Propofol is a widely used intravenous sedative-hypnotic agent, known for its rapid onset, and is commonly used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia and sedation. Propofol is extensively metabolized in the liver into water-soluble metabolites that are excreted by the kidneys. Propofol has been associated with the green discoloration of urine, breast milk, and other bodily fluids. Although the exact mechanism remains to be elucidated, it is thought to be related to the phenolic derivatives of propofol. Here we present a case of a 27-year-old breastfeeding mother producing green-colored breast milk following propofol induction for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. …

Sglt-2 Inhibitor-Induced Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis: A Case Report, Hamad A. Hussain, Amanda Park
Advocate GME
Introduction: Euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (eDKA) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, such as empagliflozin (Jardiance). The incidence of eDKA is rising with increasing use of SGLT-2 inhibitors. Unlike traditional DKA, eDKA is characterized by significant ketoacidosis with normal to only mildly elevated blood glucose levels, making it a diagnostic challenge. The mechanisms underlying eDKA include increased glucagon secretion, enhanced lipolysis, and reduced insulin secretion, all of which promote ketogenesis despite euglycemia. Surgery, prolonged fasting, and critical illness further exacerbate this metabolic state. Here, we present a case of a 79-year-old female with type 2 …

Trapped Under Anesthesia: Pseudocholinesterase Deficiency In Liver Cirrhosis, Jennifer Dziemianko, Mi Kyung Kim, Jhazmin Griffith
Advocate GME
Introduction: Pseudocholinesterase (PChE), also known as butyrylcholinesterase, plasma cholinesterase or serum cholinesterase, is an enzyme produced in the liver and is responsible for the hydrolysis of choline-based esters, namely the neuromuscular blockade (NMB) drugs succinylcholine and mivacurium. In the presence of normal PChE levels, 90-95% of succinylcholine is inactivated before it reaches the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), resulting in paralysis expected to last about 10-15 minutes [1,2]. PChE deficiencies are exceedingly rare, affecting 0.02-0.03% of the population, and can prolong paralysis by minutes to hours [1]. While we often talk about the genetic etiology, there are many acquired causes to be …

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants, young children, and immunocompromised individuals. Currently, FDA-approved monoclonal antibody therapies are limited to infants and young children with severe RSV disease. As a result, there is an urgent need for comprehensive studies of RSV pathogenesis to support the development of new therapeutic strategies. Exchange proteins directly activated by cAMP (EPAC) have recently emerged as key regulators in various viral infections. Our previous work identified EPAC isoform 2 (EPAC2) as a critical factor in RSV replication and host innate immune responses. However, …

Muhammad Al-Ali is a Saudi poet and intellectual, widely regarded as one of the founding figures of modern Saudi literature. He engaged in poetry, literary criticism, and various forms of writing, establishing himself as a pioneer of modernist thought and expression in Saudi Arabia. His work presents a lasting example of aesthetic innovation, blending the dualities of heritage and the theme of water in a distinctive and harmonious way. The poet does not sever the deep-rooted ties that connect him to his inherited culture, which remains embedded in the collective consciousness. Within this context, Al-Ali’s poetic text serves to imaginatively …

Elevated urban temperatures are a significant concern across the globe due to their negative health effects and increased energy use. Understanding the spatial variation in urban air temperatures can lead to informed mitigation and planning efforts. Air temperatures for multiple urban areas in the state of Iowa, USA, at three times of the day, were collected using customized sensors mounted on vehicles driven through a variety of landscapes in each urban area. Geographic information systems technology was used to process high-resolution landscape datasets and derive variables that summarize the urban landscape surrounding each temperature measurement point. Five different statistical models: …
