Cryptic Species Diversity Within The Andes Frog Phrynopus Juninensis (Shreve, 1938) From Peru, Sam Voss Apr 2025

Cryptic Species Diversity Within The Andes Frog Phrynopus Juninensis (Shreve, 1938) From Peru, Sam Voss

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The frog genus Phrynopus resides in Peru's upper montane forest and supra-treeline grasslands. It is characterized by its lack of a tympanum, narrow digits, and usual lack of dentigerous process of vomers. The genus includes 37 distinct species that reproduce with terrestrial eggs. Previous molecular research revealed that the genus Phrynopus contains a new undescribed species previously thought to be Phrynopus juninensis. Phrynopus juninensis is characterized by its large size, strong supratympanic fold, and unique coloration; it is distributed in the Cordillera Oriental in Central Peru between 3420-3850 m in elevation. Its snout-vent length ranges between 22.0 to 30.6 mm …

Heterogenous Vs. Homogeneous Grouping: Student Engagement In Math Instruction, Claire Ancevicius Apr 2025

Heterogenous Vs. Homogeneous Grouping: Student Engagement In Math Instruction, Claire Ancevicius

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Today, teachers may let their students choose partners during activities in the elementary classroom, but that might not be the best way for students to gain as much knowledge as they can. This research study focuses specifically on differentiated grouping and how well students can stay on task during mathematics instruction. Murphy et. al. (2017) found that putting students into heterogeneous groups rather than homogeneous groups is much more effective for deep learning and can even support struggling learners. The classroom data collected for this research study consisted of student surveys, anecdotal notes, student work samples, and even self reflections. …

Implementation Of Open Educational Resources To Foster Student Accessibility And Learning Opportunities, Taylor Wipf Apr 2025

Implementation Of Open Educational Resources To Foster Student Accessibility And Learning Opportunities, Taylor Wipf

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

With the rise of technological advancements, various methods are being incorporated to increase accessibility for student material and content within the classroom, including initiatives to foster inclusive learning environments and access to learning opportunities. Open Educational Resources (OER), which include course materials that reside in digital or other mediums that reside in a public domain or under an open license that allows for use, adaptation, and redistribution with limited or no restrictions (Smith & Elder, 2022). Despite the apparent benefits of OER usage, there are limited classroom studies and research, in the United States specifically, to show the beneficial implementation …

Art Education As It Intersects With Sel Competencies: The Benefits Of Structured Cross-Curricular Education, M. Fiona Doran Apr 2025

Art Education As It Intersects With Sel Competencies: The Benefits Of Structured Cross-Curricular Education, M. Fiona Doran

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Conversation about Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies has become more emergent in recent years. With the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a recent spike in youth suicides, and the impending threat of fascists in Washington, the cause for mental health education has become urgent. In education, professionals are constantly confronted with underfunding and supreme lack of resources. The question emerges; how can teachers address SEL concepts (CASEL 2019) in tandem with existing curricula, and what would be an organic approach? As a preservice Art Educator, inherent parallels between the arts and SEL competencies were emergent- based on personal experience …

Exploring The Scalability And Error Tolerance Of N-Qubit Superdense Coding, Benjamin Heinz Apr 2025

Exploring The Scalability And Error Tolerance Of N-Qubit Superdense Coding, Benjamin Heinz

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Superdense coding is a quantum communication protocol that enables the transmission of more than one classical bit of information per qubit, using entangled states. While superdense coding with 2-qubits is well understood and directly maps to the Bell states, the same cannot be said for higher numbers of qubits. This project aims to develop an algorithm for superdense coding using a larger number of qubits, while analyzing how the capacity for information transmission scales with qubit count. Additionally, we will determine the error thresholds for accurately reconstructing the encoded information and investigate how error scales as the number of qubits …

The Climate Crisis And Disruption On Indigeneity, Nathalie Romero Apr 2025

The Climate Crisis And Disruption On Indigeneity, Nathalie Romero

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Earth’s temperature has increased by 2 ℉ since 1850, with the warmest historical period recorded between 2014 and 2023 (Lindsey & Dahlman, 2024). The effects of climate change will worsen without governmental intervention in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in environmental projects, and building a climate-resistant society. Efforts to build a sustainable society may come with complications as it impacts groups of people differently. Therefore, mitigation and adaptation efforts are sustainable only if environmental approaches consider multiple perspectives– more specifically the perspectives of Indigenous and local peoples. The idea of local, Indigenous input is supported by the principles of sustainable …

Indirect Detection Of Neutrinos Through Beta Decay, Ahnnika I. Hess Apr 2025

Indirect Detection Of Neutrinos Through Beta Decay, Ahnnika I. Hess

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The current standard model of particle physics does not allow neutrinos to have mass, however, neutrino oscillation experiments have shown that they do. This has significant implications as theorists work to develop a more comprehensive understanding beyond the standard model. Additionally, several international labs are currently investigating a postulate that neutrinos may have played a role in matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early universe. We would like to assess how/why neutrinos change flavor. Unfortunately, because they lack electrical charge and have almost negligible mass, direct detection of neutrinos is beyond the capabilities of anyone not working in the largest of international …

Incorporating Student’S Cultures In A Geometry Classroom, Paul Zunkel Apr 2025

Incorporating Student’S Cultures In A Geometry Classroom, Paul Zunkel

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Current research studies on student engagement and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP), has revealed a positive connection between classroom engagement and academic success in Geometry and Algebra classes. Conducting lesson studies helped to investigate how teachers can engage students learning in mathematics when including the student's cultural background. According to Ladson-Billings (1995), CRP refers to the cultural teaching methods towards students and their backgrounds. While using CRP in the classrooms, a teacher measured three types of engagement, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional. Pham and Chau (2023), refer to behavioral engagement as the participation and attentiveness within the classroom. In this classroom research …

Does Height Dissatisfaction Moderate Drive For Muscularity In Men?, Michael Ashton Apr 2025

Does Height Dissatisfaction Moderate Drive For Muscularity In Men?, Michael Ashton

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Muscularity is central to exploring men’s body image (Parent 2013). Research reveals how one’s muscularity can impact one’s psychological and physical behaviors such as maladaptive muscularity enhancement behaviors (Tykla, 2011) and symptoms of eating disorders (Lavender et al 2017). Several factors influence men’s experiences of body image dissatisfaction including drive for muscularity (Bergeron & Tylka 2007) and height dissatisfaction (Griffiths et al., 2017). Height dissatisfaction may also predict quality of life impairment for some men (Griffiths et al 2017). While one cannot easily change one’s height, muscularity is more amenable to being changed. Some have suggested that men who are …

A Critical Analysis Of The Status Of Fundamental Quantum Operations In Emerging Computing Platforms, Otis Buras, Quincy Carlson Apr 2025

A Critical Analysis Of The Status Of Fundamental Quantum Operations In Emerging Computing Platforms, Otis Buras, Quincy Carlson

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

There are several emerging platforms for quantum computing, each with unique approaches to implementing qubits and quantum operations. A fundamental requirement for a functional quantum computing platform is the ability to entangle two qubits, typically achieved via a controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate. This project examines how different quantum computing architectures implement the Quantum Register and the CNOT gate, assessing whether these implementations are robust enough to be of practical value in the foreseeable future. We will compare the advantages and disadvantages of superconducting qubits, trapped ions, neutral atoms, photonic systems, silicon spin qubits, topological qubits, and diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. Key …
