Soft-Floor Auctions: Harnessing Regret To Improve Efficiency And Revenue, Dirk Bergemann, Kevin Breuer, Peter Cramton, Jack Hirsch, Yero S. Ndiaye, Axel Ockenfels Apr 2025

Soft-Floor Auctions: Harnessing Regret To Improve Efficiency And Revenue, Dirk Bergemann, Kevin Breuer, Peter Cramton, Jack Hirsch, Yero S. Ndiaye, Axel Ockenfels

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A soft-floor auction asks bidders to accept an opening price to participate in an ascending auction. If no bidder accepts, lower bids are considered using first-price rules. Soft floors are common despite being irrelevant with standard assumptions. When bidders regret losing, soft-floor auctions are more efficient and profitable than standard optimal auctions. Revenue increases as bidders are inclined to accept the opening price to compete in a regret-free ascending auction. Efficiency is improved since having a soft floor allows for a lower hard reserve price, reducing the frequency of no sale. Theory and experiment confirm these motivations from practice.

Should The States Return To Worldwide Combined Reporting?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Apr 2025

Should The States Return To Worldwide Combined Reporting?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

On February 20 the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) released a report on the revenue implications of states adopting worldwide combined reporting (WWCR). WWCR refers to a method of taxation that several states (for example, California) applied from the 1970s to the 1990s. Under WWCR, the state takes the entire worldwide profit of a multinational operating in the state and multiplies it by a formula that traditionally combines payroll, tangible assets, and sales in the state divided by worldwide payroll, assets, and sales. The result is the amount of profit taxable in that state.

Improving Same-Day Access To Highly Effective Contraceptives In Middle Tennessee, Jillian Gunderson, Elizabeth Morse, David Phillippi Apr 2025

Improving Same-Day Access To Highly Effective Contraceptives In Middle Tennessee, Jillian Gunderson, Elizabeth Morse, David Phillippi

DNP Projects

Project Title: Improving Same-day Access To Highly Effective Contraceptives In Middle Tennessee

Background and Rationale: Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) are highly effective at preventing pregnancy at 99%. A two-visit protocol is a known barrier to access. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends same-day placement to increase access to LARC. A Step Ahead Middle Tennessee (ASA) is a non-profit organization partnered with Belmont University that provides free, long-acting reversible contraceptives. However, most ASA clinical partners offer services with a two-visit protocol, and there is no process to identify patient preference for same-day placement.

Purpose: The primary purpose of this …

Food Allergies On The College Campus: Increasing Awareness, Kelly Wagner

DNP Projects

Project Title: Food Allergies on the College Campus: Increasing Awareness

Background and Rationale: The prevalence of food allergies in the United States is high and continues to increase, affecting approximately 32 million people (10.8% of the population). Food allergies are a chronic disease, and students transitioning to college are in the age group that experiences the highest rate of lethal anaphylactic reactions related to food allergies. Current best practice guidelines recommend that colleges should have a comprehensive, campus-wide approach to food allergy awareness, management, and emergency protocol. At a midsize southeastern university, there was no campus-wide approach to addressing the …

Direct And Mediating Relationships Between Divine Grace, Legalism, And Mental Health, Branwyn H. Mccormick Apr 2025

Direct And Mediating Relationships Between Divine Grace, Legalism, And Mental Health, Branwyn H. Mccormick

Senior Honors Theses

Positive psychology has popularized the integration of religious ideas into psychological treatment. According to the literature, the experience of divine grace is correlated with favorable mental health outcomes, whereas legalistic attitudes are correlated with adverse mental health outcomes. It has also been found that the experience of divine grace is a mediator between legalism and mental health. However, the constructs of divine grace and legalism have both been relatively unexplored aside from a few studies using Latter-day Saints (LDS) populations. The current study seeks to analyze relationships between divine grace, legalism, and mental health using a conservative evangelical Christian population. …

A Psychometric Investigation Of The Biophilic Values Profile Indicator: A New Measure Of Environmental Values, W. Brad Faircloth, Jayson Seaman, Andrew J. Bobilya, Lauren A. Ferguson, Riley Whitney

Faculty Publications

Researchers studying outdoor experiences for educational or recreational purposes will benefit from better capturing the environmental values of the individuals and communities they serve, as both antecedent predictors and outcome measures. The Kellert-Shorb Biophilic Values Indicator (KSBVI) is an instrument that has shown promise as a tool for assessing environmental values. However, the length of the KSBVI makes it impractical to use, especially in field settings where brief measures are desirable. Therefore, this study’s purpose was to explore environmental values in a college student population relative to Kellert’s (2002) typology and to reduce the KSBVI to a more …

Determinants Of Neuronal Viability Following Spreading Depolarization, Michael C. Bennett Apr 2025

Determinants Of Neuronal Viability Following Spreading Depolarization, Michael C. Bennett

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Spreading depolarizations (SDs) are massive, slowly propagating waves that cause near-complete neuroglial depolarization and are energetically demanding for the brain. Past studies have established SDs as key contributors to secondary injury in tissue that lacks the metabolic supply to meet the energetic burden of repolarization after SD. Efforts to identify the mechanisms that cause deleterious consequences following SD have been ongoing, with significant results showing that blocking excitotoxic levels of Ca2+ from entering neurons through NMDA receptors prevents detrimental outcomes. While these studies have advanced the field, other mechanisms may also contribute to the metabolic burden of SD. This …

Long-Read Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Enables The Study Of Cancer Subclone-Specific Genotypes And Phenotypes In Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Gage S Black, Xiaomeng Huang, Yi Qiao, Philip Moos, Deepa Sampath, Deborah M Stephens, Jennifer A Woyach, Gabor T Marth

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors are effective for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) due to BTK's role in B cell survival and proliferation. Treatment resistance is most commonly caused by the emergence of the hallmark BTKC481S mutation that inhibits drug binding. In this study, we aimed to investigate cancer subclones harboring a BTKC481S mutation and identify cells with co-occurring CLL driver mutations. In addition, we sought to determine whether BTK-mutated subclones exhibit distinct transcriptomic behavior when compared to other cancer subclones. To achieve these goals, we use scBayes, which integrates bulk DNA sequencing and single-cell …

Nonlinear Monetary Policy Reaction Function And Macroeconomic Fundamentals In India, Masud Hasan Adil, Vishal Sharma, Sana Fatima Apr 2025

Nonlinear Monetary Policy Reaction Function And Macroeconomic Fundamentals In India, Masud Hasan Adil, Vishal Sharma, Sana Fatima

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

The hybrid Taylor rule of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the subject of the current study, which investigates nonlinearities in an open economy that includes a fiscal variable. The analysis employs a nonlinear cointegration approach and identifies policy preference asymmetries. The RBI prioritizes price stability due to the preference for inflation avoidance over recession. Fiscal variable plays a significant role in estimating the Taylor rule, which suggests that it is necessary to align fiscal and monetary policy in order to maintain the inflation within the designated range. Lastly, the nonlinear Taylor rule findings not only aid in comprehending …
