Iconicity As An Organizing Principle Of The Lexicon, Erin E. Campbell, Zed Sevcikova Sehyr, Elana Pontecorvo, Ariel Cohen-Goldberg, Karen Emmorey, Naomi Caselli

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

The view that words are arbitrary is a foundational assumption about language, used to set human languages apart from nonhuman communication. We present here a study of the alignment between the semantic and phonological structure (systematicity) of American Sign Language (ASL), and for comparison, two spoken languages—English and Spanish. Across all three languages, words that are semantically related are more likely to be phonologically related, highlighting systematic alignment between word form and word meaning. Critically, there is a significant effect of iconicity (a perceived physical resemblance between word form and word meaning) on this alignment: words are most likely to …

The Impact Of Energy Intake And Macronutrient Distribution On Recovery Rates In Young Women With Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, Hadley Day, Rebecca Lyons, Taylor Vas Apr 2025

The Impact Of Energy Intake And Macronutrient Distribution On Recovery Rates In Young Women With Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, Hadley Day, Rebecca Lyons, Taylor Vas

Department of Nutrition Student Projects

Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is characterized by irregular or absent menstrual cycles due to disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. Young women ages 18-25 are particularly vulnerable to FHA, which can have long-term consequences on bone health, fertility, and overall well-being. While meeting energy needs is essential for recovery, the question arises of whether different macronutrient distributions within an energy-sufficient diet influence the recovery rate. This study aims to evaluate the impact of varying macronutrient compositions on the recovery of young women with FHA. The study will be conducted using a randomized controlled trial design to examine whether diets with …

Displaced Decarbonization: Climate Necropolitics And The Contested Spatialities Of Green Hydrogen In Namibia, Meredith J. Deboom Apr 2025

Displaced Decarbonization: Climate Necropolitics And The Contested Spatialities Of Green Hydrogen In Namibia, Meredith J. Deboom

Faculty Publications

Green hydrogen is often presented as a transformative solution to the dual challenges of decarbonization and economic development. This article applies the framework of climate necropolitics to interrogate the contested spatialities underlying such “win-win” narratives. It does so through an extended case study of Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, a $10 billion green hydrogen project planned for Lüderitz, Namibia. A remote town of 20,000 in a country with a $12 billion annual GDP, Lüderitz initially appears to be an unlikely host site for the “industrial fuel of the future.” To explain this outcome, I first illustrate how discordant socio-spatial projects—including European energy …

Explaining Youth Driver Licensing Determinants Using Xgboost And Shap, Kailai Wang, Jonas De Vos, Michael Smart, Sicheng Wang

Faculty Publications

This study explores the factors influencing driver's license acquisition among young individuals and examines its broader implications for mobility, safety, and sustainability. Leveraging nationally representative survey data on Millennials and Generation Z, we apply eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and SHapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) to identify key socioeconomic determinants of teenage driver's license attainment. Our findings reveal consistent predictors across both generations, including the percentage of licensed family members, household income per capita, educational attainment, and public transit ridership. We identify meaningful dose-response relationships, such as the increasing influence of licensed household members beyond a 0.75 threshold and the …

Two-Layer Formulation For Long-Runout Turbidity Currents: Theory And Bypass Flow Case, Hongbo Ma, Gary Parker, Matthieu Cartigny, Enrica Viparelli, S. Balachandar, Xudong Fu, Rossella Luchi Apr 2025

Two-Layer Formulation For Long-Runout Turbidity Currents: Theory And Bypass Flow Case, Hongbo Ma, Gary Parker, Matthieu Cartigny, Enrica Viparelli, S. Balachandar, Xudong Fu, Rossella Luchi

Faculty Publications

Turbidity currents, which are stratified, sediment-laden bottom flows in the ocean or lakes, can run out for hundreds or thousands of kilometres in submarine channels without losing their stratified structure. Here, we derive a layer-averaged, two-layer model for turbidity currents, specifically designed to capture long-runout. A number of previous models have captured runout of only tens of kilometres, beyond which thickening of the flows becomes excessive, and the models without a lateral overspill mechanism fail. In our framework, a lower layer containing nearly all the sediment is a faster, gravity-driven flow that propels an upper layer, where sediment concentration is …

BACKGROUND: Variants in genes encoding multiple subunits of the RNA Polymerase III complex which synthesizes rRNAs, tRNAs, and other small RNAs were previously associated with neurological disorders, such as syndromic hypomyelination leukodystrophies, pontocerebellar hypoplasia, and cerebellofaciodental syndrome. One new such candidate is BRF2, which encodes a TFIIB-like factor that recruits the RNA polymerase III complex to type 3 promoters to initiate transcription of U6, RnaseP, and 7SK RNAs.

METHODS: We combined sequencing with functional analyses to investigate the effects of BRF2 variants.

RESULTS: We observe that a previously reported significant underrepresentation of double transmission of a splice variant results in …

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a group of heritable conditions that are associated with cardiac repolarization abnormalities characterized by QT prolongation on electrocardiogram and the risk of life-threatening arrhythmias. The prenatal detection of LQTS presents significant challenges for clinicians, and a multidisciplinary approach is required for optimal prenatal and postnatal management. In this comprehensive literature review, we describe strategies for the fetal diagnosis of LQTS with variable initial presentation, genetic testing in suspected fetal LQTS, the utility of fetal magnetocardiography as an additional diagnostic tool, prenatal management, and postnatal treatment. We focus on a multidisciplinary team approach including fetal …

Democracy’S Distrust: The Supreme Court’S Anti-Voter Decisions As A Threat To Democracy, Gilda R. Daniels Apr 2025

Democracy’S Distrust: The Supreme Court’S Anti-Voter Decisions As A Threat To Democracy, Gilda R. Daniels

Articles

This Essay explores perceived biases within recent Supreme Court decisions affecting voting access and their implications for American democracy. The Supreme Court plays a pivotal role in enforcing democratic principles. This Essay examines historical and contemporary examples of judicial decisions that have privileged powerful political candidates and legislatures to the detriment of voters. As a lens for assessing these decisions, the Essay introduces a conceptual dichotomy between candidate-centered and voter-centered perspectives. The Essay argues that the Court’s prioritization of the former perspective has forced citizens to bear the burden of antidemocratic decisions, which in turn has led to widespread distrust …

Impact Of Hidden Populations Through Faculty Identification And Intervention In Higher Education, Jimmie K. Wetmore Apr 2025

Impact Of Hidden Populations Through Faculty Identification And Intervention In Higher Education, Jimmie K. Wetmore

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

College students who have endured trauma through experiences in the foster care system, homelessness, justice system involvement, poverty, violence, and/or abuse are at greater risk of not completing college and returning to the circumstances that perpetrated their initial traumas. These students are known as “hidden populations.” Mentorship and resources can help these students to break the social and economic cycles that have placed them in a high-risk category. Higher education faculty are in a unique position to help bridge the gap that exists for these students. The problem can be impacted by more faculty being aware of the population and …

An Analysis Of The Encryption Algorithms Proposed For The Mqtt Protocol On Resource Constrained Iot Devices, John Joseph Keenan Apr 2025

An Analysis Of The Encryption Algorithms Proposed For The Mqtt Protocol On Resource Constrained Iot Devices, John Joseph Keenan

Theses and Dissertations

As more IoT devices are used to gather data and automate devices throughout the world, more security solutions are needed to keep these devices and the data they transmit secure. Many of these devices use the MQTT protocol, which does not encrypt the transferred data by default. The TLS/SSL protocols are the standard proposed solution for encrypting this traffic, but many resource constrained IoT devices do not have enough resources to run these protocols efficiently. Because of this, many other encryption algorithms have been proposed or designed for resource constrained IoT devices running the MQTT protocol, but very limited research …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain in adolescents is a significant and growing concern, as it can have negative implications on physical and psychosocial development. Management can be complicated by the increasing risks associated with opioid misuse, highlighting the need for effective nonpharmacological interventions. Biofeedback is an empirically supported behavioral intervention for chronic pain that targets the self-regulation of physiological responses. Virtual reality (VR) is a novel delivery method for biofeedback that could serve as an engaging and effective platform for adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of integrating a VR-delivered respiratory biofeedback …

Health Crisis And Currency Risk: Fresh Evidence From New Data Sets, Afees A. Salisu, Dinci J. Penzin, Yinka S. Hammed

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

With the aid of a method of predictability analysis that involves a feasible quasigeneralized least squares estimator, we examine the predictive power associated with the newly computed COVID-19 indices, which are disaggregated into six indices for currency market risks (realized volatility of exchange rate). Our sample size covers the period between December 31, 2019, and December 28, 2021. We note mixed outcomes for the major currency markets considered. On average, while the health crisis seems to have heightened the risks associated with Pounds Sterling, Australian Dollar and Canadian Dollar against USD, it exerts a moderating effect on the Euro, Yen …

The Determinants Of Fdi Inflows In The Indonesian Manufacturing Sector: Some Evidence From Spatial Dependency Measurements, Dadang Ramdhan Apr 2025

The Determinants Of Fdi Inflows In The Indonesian Manufacturing Sector: Some Evidence From Spatial Dependency Measurements, Dadang Ramdhan

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

The determinants of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow in the manufacturing sector of Indonesian provinces are the focus of this study. This study demonstrates that spatial dependency in Indonesian FDI location decisions is primarily influenced by cultural heterogeneity and geographic distances, as determined by the Spatial Durbin Model. This finding suggests that the inflow of FDI into a host province is influenced by FDI inflow and other factors in neighboring provinces that are geographically adjacent to the host province and have a similar level of cultural heterogeneity. The primary determinants of these factors are the infrastructure in neighboring provinces and …

Fdi Spillovers And Wage Gaps In Indonesia, Mohammad Zeqi Yasin, Pyan Putro Surya Amin Muchtar, Nur Arifin

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Our objective is to evaluate the competitiveness of local firms by determining whether the dynamic wage spillover model devised by Tomohara and Takii (2011) consistently captures subsectoral dynamics. We identify two subsectors that are witnessing positive spillovers using the Indonesian firm-level dataset. Nevertheless, our quantitative analysis demonstrates inconsistencies, with competitive subsectors contributing to wage disparities at a higher rate than uncompetitive firms. In other words, wage inequalities between foreign and local firms are not effectively reduced by competitive firms. In order to improve the performance of local firms and enable them to more effectively compete with foreign firms in labor …
