Rotating Anisotropic Bose Gas With Large Number Of Vortices, Ahmet Keleş
Rotating Anisotropic Bose Gas With Large Number Of Vortices, Ahmet Keleş
Turkish Journal of Physics
Rapidly rotating atomic gases provide a platform for studying phenomena akin to type-II superconductors and quantum Hall systems. Recently, these systems have attracted renewed interest due to technological advances in the trap anisotropy control, in-situ observation capabilities, and cooling and rotating complex atomic species such as dipolar gases. Understanding the vortex lattice formation and quantum melting is crucial for exploring quantum Hall physics in these systems. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the vortex lattices in anisotropic quantum gases. We formulate the rotating gas Hamiltonian in the Landau gauge, and consider the effects of additional perturbations such as the trap …

Supersymmetric Exploration Of External Field Effects On Spinning Cosmic Strings With Aharonov–Bohm Interaction, Bi̇lgehan Bariş Öner, Özlem Yeşi̇ltaş
Turkish Journal of Physics
We have conducted a supersymmetric analysis of the spacetime of a spinning cosmic string, focusing on the behavior of an electron in magnetic fields. Our study involves examining the Dirac system through the lens of exceptional orthogonal polynomials, specifically the exceptional orthogonal Laguerre $X_{m}$ polynomials. This analysis transforms the Dirac system into a relativistic system with a nonlinear isotonic oscillator. Additionally, we introduce new potential models that extend the radial oscillator by incorporating rational terms. Comprehensive analyses of the potential, energy levels, and probability density graphs are provided for various topological defects of cosmic strings and different parameters of the …

Background/Objectives: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) significantly impedes swine production due to rapid genetic variation and suppression of antiviral interferon (IFN) responses, leading to ineffective immunity. To address this, we developed IFNmix, a replication-competent PRRSV modified live vaccine (MLV) candidate co-expressing three Type I IFN subclasses (IFNα, IFNβ, IFNδ) to enhance antiviral immunity. Methods: In two independent in vivo experiments, we compared the protection of IFNmix and a commercial PRRSV MLV vaccine during challenge with a virulent PRRSV strain. Clinical signs, antibody and cytokine production, viral replication, and lung pathology in IFNmix-vaccinated pigs were compared to those of …

Navajo Speech Recognition Using Low-Resource Language Models, Emery M. Sutherland
Navajo Speech Recognition Using Low-Resource Language Models, Emery M. Sutherland
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This thesis describes the development of a speech recognition system to classify Navajo (Dine) words using Low Resource Language (LRL) datasets. Presently there are no recognized high-quality open-sourced datasets for the Dine language needed to train models for speech recognition. A small balanced dataset was designed to train several models. To overcome the scarcity of the LRL dataset, the audio recordings were augmented to account for time-stretching, amplitude variations, time shifts, small amounts of white Gaussian noise, and SpecAugmentation. The models included a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model with …

Numerical Analysis Of The Seir Model, Abigail R. Beckelhimer
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Epidemiological models delineate the spread of diseases within a population. In this research project, the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered (SEIR) Model was examined numerically for comparison between several methods. Approximations were obtained through Euler’s Method, Taylor’s Method, Runge-Kutta Methods, and Multi-step Methods. Hypothetical situations with parameter alterations were considered in order to better understand the effects the parameters have on the model. The goal of this project was to portray the usefulness of numerical approximations for predicting the behavior of the SEIR model and thus the course of a pandemic.

A Review Of Recent Studies On The Pathogenesis Of Systemic Sclerosis: Focus On Fibrosis Pathways, Sergio A. Jimenez, Fabian A. Mendoza, Sonsoles Piera-Velazquez
Scleroderma Center Faculty Papers
Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a systemic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology characterized by the development of frequently progressive cutaneous and internal organ fibrosis accompanied by severe vascular alterations. The pathogenesis of SSc is highly complex and, despite extensive investigation, has not been fully elucidated. Numerous studies have suggested that unknown etiologic factors cause multiple alterations in genetically receptive hosts, leading to SSc development and progression. These events may be functionally and pathologically interconnected and include: 1) Structural and functional microvascular and endothelial cell abnormalities; 2) Severe oxidative stress and high reactive oxygen species (3); Frequently progressive cutaneous and visceral fibrosis; …

Foot strike angle may play an important role in lower limb musculoskeletal injuries that are common for military personnel, and as such we decided to investigate the possible correlation between foot strike angle and the vertical ground reaction forces (GRFs) while traversing over varying terrain textures to simulate military conditions. This study aimed to determine the effect of speed, body borne load, and surface on foot strike angle.18 participants had lower limb biomechanics quantified during a walk (1.5 m/s) and run (4.5 m/s) with and without a 15 kg load over a flat and uneven surface. The flat surface consisted …
Traditional Versus Modern: A Study Of Linguistics In Literature, Rachelle Pfeifer, Aiden Vanderstouwe
Traditional Versus Modern: A Study Of Linguistics In Literature, Rachelle Pfeifer, Aiden Vanderstouwe
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
This ethnography addresses the changing of definitions of literary terms, primarily with gendered definitions—how writers characterize masculine and feminine traits in regards to fictional characters, and how these changes reflect the real world. Understanding the shift in longstanding definitions of gender, masculinity, and femininity in the literary sense, we will have a better grasp at understanding them in society. I have been studying writing groups for the last 3 weeks, positing questions on how writers either challenge or conform to traditional definitions. I have observed both amicable and controversial responses of varying degrees, which has brought me to the realization …
The Complexity Of A Simple Code Comment: Genre Conventions, Social Influence, And Rhetorical Functions, Amelia Hill
The Complexity Of A Simple Code Comment: Genre Conventions, Social Influence, And Rhetorical Functions, Amelia Hill
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Code comments are a common tool developers and engineers use to communicate information about their coding project. Researchers define code comments as a natural language (e.g. English) comment attached to a line of code that explains the function and/or purpose of the line. This study explored how developers and engineers write and discuss code comments, including communication with themselves and teammates. The study investigated the genre conventions of code comments, and how developers and engineers use them beyond the above definition (e.g. personal commenting, emotional outbursts, other “types” of comments).
Key findings indicate that because code comments do not have …
Effects Of Postpartum Depression On Adolescent Mental Health And Behavior, Jordyn Falkner, Jennifer Weaver
Effects Of Postpartum Depression On Adolescent Mental Health And Behavior, Jordyn Falkner, Jennifer Weaver
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Several studies have emphasized the effect that maternal severe mental illness (SMI) has on the psychological and behavioral outcomes of the child, (Stender et al., 2024). Stender et al., (2024) claim that chronic exposure to maternal depression during the early stages of a child’s life puts the child at a higher risk of internalizing and externalizing problems later in life. Early exposure to maternal depression is also related to alterations in cortisol secretion in offspring during childhood and adolescence, which puts the adolescent at a higher risk of developing depressive symptoms (Halligan et al., 2007).
The current study analyzed data …

This research explores soundscapes – the composition of biotic and abiotic sound elements in a region – and their relationships with pets and wildlife. The study aims to address the question, “How do domestic pets impact wildlife through changing local soundscapes?”. Soundscapes play a critical role in wildlife behavior and hold cultural and emotional significance for humans through the formation of memories and values. Extant literature shows that pets affect wildlife, so understanding anthropogenic noise is crucial for guiding conservation efforts. A systematic review was conducted using combinations of the three search terms “domestic pets”, “soundscapes” and “wildlife”. Notably, searches …
Urban Sprawl In The American West: A History And Analysis Of Socioeconomic And Environmental Impacts, Shelby Rodriguez
Urban Sprawl In The American West: A History And Analysis Of Socioeconomic And Environmental Impacts, Shelby Rodriguez
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
The term “urban sprawl” is used to describe the spread of urban development and growth on land on the outskirts of cities. Urban sprawl is typically defined by its low-density, single-use zoning. While it is a common tactic to accommodate rising population growth and housing needs, it has been criticized for its negative long-term effects on natural habitats as well as human communities and cities. In terms of social problems, sprawl decreases opportunities for members of a community to interact, leading to feelings of isolation and decreased civic engagement. As for environmental problems, sprawl causes habitat fragmentation and air and …

While small-scale agriculture can provide diverse benefits, producers are often disadvantaged in these agrifood systems. Climate change, globalization, and other forces exacerbate local challenges. Here, we discuss preliminary findings of an ongoing project focused on challenges to sustainable agriculture facing farmers from refugee backgrounds in Boise, Idaho. Using an interdisciplinary, mixed methods approach, we aim to illuminate sources of vulnerability and adaptive capacity for farmers producing food for markets and home consumption. We co-developed this research with multiple community partners, who are helping us connect with and support a historically excluded group, while fostering pathways for knowledge co-production and action.
The Effects Of Exogenous Factors On Quarterback Performance In The Nfl, Brian M. Thibodeaux
The Effects Of Exogenous Factors On Quarterback Performance In The Nfl, Brian M. Thibodeaux
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL) are arguably the most important position players on their team, as they handle the football on most offensive plays. A common theme in labor economics is to examine the effects exogenous factors have on worker performance. Since production is a function of labor and capital, and since labor is integral for economic growth, the effects of exogenous factors on human performance should be taken into consideration. I propose to examine the effects of extreme temperatures (≥ 90˚ F; ≤ 32˚ F) and wind speed on quarterback performance (as measured by their passer rating) …

Sustainable fashion has gained traction as society has become more aware about environmental and ethical concerns in the apparel industry. My personal interest in sustainable clothing behaviors was sparked after reading The Year of Less by Cait Flanders. Her memoir details the impacts of consumer habits on personal well-being and the environment while taking readers through her one year spent buying absolutely nothing deemed unnecessary. This book made me question the motivations behind clothing purchases and the factors influencing sustainable fashion choices. One of the biggest concerns in the fashion industry is its significant impact which accounts for 10% of …

Weighted Sample Elimination: Subsampling Point Clouds Using Poisson Disk Sampling, Ted Moore
Weighted Sample Elimination: Subsampling Point Clouds Using Poisson Disk Sampling, Ted Moore
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
This research focuses on developing efficient algorithms for subsampling point clouds using Poisson disk sampling techniques. Point clouds are unorganized sets of points in 2D or 3D space that represent surfaces of objects, scenes, or areas. These point clouds can consist of hundreds of thousands to millions of points, so reducing their size can make numerically analyzing their properties much more efficient. This reduction, called subsampling, aims to create a smaller set of points that preserves the essential features of the original cloud. An ideal subsampling method would maximize the minimum distance between points, achieving what is known as the …

Beyond The Minimum: How Long Do Idaho Prisoners Serve Beyond Their Determinate Sentences?, Mason Scott
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Under the Idaho Unified Sentencing Act, individuals sentenced to prison receive both a broad indeterminate sentence and a minimum determinate sentence, which they must serve before becoming eligible for parole. This unique sentencing structure raises an important question: How long are individuals in Idaho’s prisons actually staying past their determinate sentence? Despite its significance, this question remains largely unanswered due to limited research, restricted public access to sentencing data, and the complexity of criminal justice legislation, which makes it difficult for the general public to understand. Parole boards ultimately have the discretion to release individuals after their mandatory sentence based …
