Snapshots Issue 20: Effort In Pisa: Insights From Recent Data, Lisa De Bortoli Apr 2025

Snapshots Issue 20: Effort In Pisa: Insights From Recent Data, Lisa De Bortoli

Snapshots

This issue of Snapshots explores how student effort may vary depending on the perceived stakes of the assessment. We revisit the self-reported levels of effort that students invested in the PISA test and compare them with the effort they indicated they would have made if the results counted towards their school marks. Australia’s results are compared with 21 of the 81 comparison countries and economies that participated in PISA 2022,1 providing a context for understanding Australia’s position in the global education landscape. We then examine effort in PISA among different demographic groups within Australia, which can influence how students approach …

Uncovering Language Bias Towards Written Language Use Among Bilinguals And Individuals With Disabilities, Mu'nis Maen Nazzal Apr 2025

Uncovering Language Bias Towards Written Language Use Among Bilinguals And Individuals With Disabilities, Mu'nis Maen Nazzal

Linguistics ETDs

Language is a fundamental tool of social control. Linguistic bias plays a crucial role in social hierarchies and opportunities. While research has extensively documented linguistic bias in spoken language, less attention has been given to bias in written language. This study investigates students' evaluations of three instructors’ writings: a bilingual, an instructor with a disability, and a monolingual. The study employs a matched-guise technique to explore potential biases in students' perceptions of preference, leadership skills, expertise, and professionalism.

The Friedman Test revealed that while participants showed a preference for the instructor with a disability over the bilingual instructor and the …

Enhancing Trauma-Informed Care Through The Creation Of Motivational Interviewing Training For Staff Of A Homeless Shelter For Lgbtq+ Young Adults, Olivia R. Ming Apr 2025

Enhancing Trauma-Informed Care Through The Creation Of Motivational Interviewing Training For Staff Of A Homeless Shelter For Lgbtq+ Young Adults, Olivia R. Ming

OTD Capstone Projects

This doctoral project was completed in collaboration with Nashville Launch Pad (NLP), a nonprofit homeless shelter serving LGBTQ+ young adults and their allies, ages 18–26, in Middle Tennessee. The primary aim of the project was to develop and implement a staff training program that covered several key areas: an introduction to motivational interviewing and its practical application in all 3 NLP settings; an overview of occupational therapy (OT) and its relevance within this setting; the impact of trauma on the body and brain; compassion fatigue; sensory processing differences; and how developmental milestones can be disrupted by trauma, substance use, and …

Victory Gardens: Then And Now (Flyer), Sarah Dickert Apr 2025

Victory Gardens: Then And Now (Flyer), Sarah Dickert

The Idea of Nature Public Lecture Series

Did you know Smithsonian Gardens has a Victory Garden exhibit at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC? Victory gardens were vegetable gardens planted during the world wars in order to ensure an adequate food supply for civilians and troops. Roughly one half of all American families had a victory garden during World War II. There were at least 20 million victory gardens covering more than 20 million acres of American soil by 1943. 40% of the nation’s produce was supplied by victory gardens by 1944. American families had grown approximately 8 million tons of food by the …

Speaking Faith: Communication, Identity, And Community In A Campus Ministry, Remiah Leppert, Aiden Vanderstouwe Apr 2025

Speaking Faith: Communication, Identity, And Community In A Campus Ministry, Remiah Leppert, Aiden Vanderstouwe

2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase

This ethnographic study examines the role of communication in shaping identity and fostering a sense of belonging within InterVarsity, a Christian campus ministry. By employing participant observations, field notes, and interviews, the research evaluates how faith-oriented discussions influence group dynamics, leadership structures, and the integration of new members. While linguistic studies typically focus on the structural and functional dimensions of language, they often overlook the profound personal and communal experiences that inform discourse in faith-based communities. Moreover, there is a notable scarcity of ethnographic research on religious communities, which creates gaps in our understanding of how religious language cultivates connection …

The Intertextuality of Father Camilo Torres Restrepo’s Academic Thinking And The

Foundation Of The First Sociology Department in Colombia

Catalina Honsowetz

Southeastern University

Born ten years before the start of WWII, Father Camilo Torres Restrepo entered the world in Bogotá, Colombia, at a time riddled with poverty and violence. He belonged to a politically liberal family that never shied away from public service or controversy. Desiring also to serve, Camilo surprised his family and friends with a change in career after starting university. Father Torres abandoned the law to put on priestly robes, hoping to serve his neighbors most …

Members of the Hom Lab are studying the potential benefits of water kefir consumption on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms and mental health through Brain-Gut-Microbiota Axis modulation. Water kefir is a probiotic-rich beverage produced by the fermentation of sugar water using symbiotic aggregates of microbes known as water kefir grains (WKGs). WKGs consist of various yeast, lactic acid bacteria, and acetic bacteria bound together through extracellular polysaccharides. Probiotics are defined as foods or supplements that contain live, beneficial microbes that foster well-being …

Abstract: The Bcl-2 protein family plays a critical role in controlling apoptosis through interactions of multidomain pro-apoptotic proteins (e.g., Bax, Bak), anti-apoptotic proteins (e.g., Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, Mcl-1), and BH3-only pro-apoptotic proteins (e.g., Bid, Puma, Noxa). Recent studies have shown that the Voltage-Dependent Anion Channels (VDAC) interact with Bax and Bak to regulate apoptosis. We hypothesize VDACs interact with Bax through their N-terminal region, which we discovered is homologous with the BH3 domains of Bcl-2 family proteins. The results show that the N-terminus of VDACs 1 and 2 can functionally replace the …

Introduction:

  • Estradiol (E2) & aromatase (AROM) are neuroprotective
  • AROM enzymatically converts testosterone (T) into E2
  • E2 alters testicular function and increases stroke and cancer risk
  • Phytoestrogens, such as genistein (GEN), are plant derived compounds that have a similar chemical structure to E2 and some E2 -like effects
  • GEN may possess the neuroprotective effects of E2 while not having the negative effects
  • Zebra finch (ZF) brains are highly plastic, and the cerebellum (CB) has low AROM constitutively
  • The CB has high levels of estrogen …

Rotating Anisotropic Bose Gas With Large Number Of Vortices, Ahmet Keleş Apr 2025

Rotating Anisotropic Bose Gas With Large Number Of Vortices, Ahmet Keleş

Turkish Journal of Physics

Rapidly rotating atomic gases provide a platform for studying phenomena akin to type-II superconductors and quantum Hall systems. Recently, these systems have attracted renewed interest due to technological advances in the trap anisotropy control, in-situ observation capabilities, and cooling and rotating complex atomic species such as dipolar gases. Understanding the vortex lattice formation and quantum melting is crucial for exploring quantum Hall physics in these systems. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the vortex lattices in anisotropic quantum gases. We formulate the rotating gas Hamiltonian in the Landau gauge, and consider the effects of additional perturbations such as the trap …
