With the growing prominence of AI, the need for humanity to grow along with AI has become paramount. As important a tool as AI can become, society must remain diligent to learn and strive to continue to rely on human intelligence. To properly wield such a tool requires the invaluable ability to interpret the information brought forth. This is not only crucial for the individual, but society. To achieve this, individuals should strive to take a grit-based approach to learning to grow along with the exponential rise of AI. The goal of this presentation is to encourage individuals to put …
Sensory Inclusion In The Dance Classroom, Hannah Shafer
Sensory Inclusion In The Dance Classroom, Hannah Shafer
2025 Student Academic Showcase
Dance has historically been inaccessible to individuals with unique sensory perceptions of the world. Throughout this research project, viable ways of accommodating for these perceptions will be explored. This will be done through research and the testimonies of individuals who currently live with a unique sensory perception. Unique sensory perceptions are not limited to just neurodivergent individuals (those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, and more), but also for those who do not have the ability to use one or more of their senses. While the information is curated with the intent for dance classrooms, it can …

Gibberellin is a hormone in plants that affects growth. Gibberellin works to begin germination in grass seeds by stimulating amylase production. It may be possible to use gibberellin to understand why different millet variants exhibit dwarf growth. We grew and treated 4 different dwarf variants with a gibberellic acid solution to identify the ability of each plant to utilize gibberellin. We compared the growth in millet grown both with and without the solution to see the effects of gibberellin on each variant. Dwarf millets may not produce their own gibberellin, or they may lack the receptors to utilize gibberellin. Our …

Conformable Regulator Problems With Fixed Delay, Seth Baur, Joseph E. Smith, Nick Wintz
2025 Student Academic Showcase
In this project, we consider processes guided by a conformable derivative first introduced by Khalil et al in 2014. This time-weighted derivative has many of the same properties as the classical derivative but lacks the semigroup property for the exponential. Here, we study a conformable linear system where the state and control are subject to the same fixed delay. Our process is also subject to wear and tear, represented by a cost functional. Our goal is to find an optimal control that minimizes this cost. This control is propagated by a quasi-Ricatti equation, which itself includes a time delay. Finally, …

Applications For The Conformable Information Filter, Sophia Hungerford, Joseph E. Smith, Nick Wintz
2025 Student Academic Showcase
In this project, we offer application to our previously constructed information filter. The information filter is an algorithm used to estimate the information of a process corrupted in some way. The information filter is mathematically similar to the Kalman filter, widely used in navigation. Unlike the Kalman filter, the information filter propagates backwards in time and is more effective in smoothing. Here, our corrupted system is in terms of conformable derivative introduced by Khalil et al. in 2014. This time-weighted derivative shares many of the same properties as the classical derivative but lacks the usual semigroup property associated with the …
Barriers To Sports Participation Faced By Disabled Individuals, Bri Nelson
Barriers To Sports Participation Faced By Disabled Individuals, Bri Nelson
2025 Student Academic Showcase
My project is an exploration of the barriers to sports participation that disabled individuals face aside from their disability itself. The first barrier to sports participation that you might experience as a disabled individual would likely be psychological. Negative societal perceptions and portrayals of disabled people can diminish the confidence and self-belief necessary to pursue new athletic activities. Activities surrounding sports participation aside from the sport itself can be more time consuming for disabled athletes- getting ready before leaving the house, changing into the right clothes, and getting equipment on and together can take much longer for someone who is …

Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
This capstone project addressed the critical need for early childhood educators to improve their understanding and application of sensory processing and self-regulation strategies within the classroom setting. The project was implemented at an early learning center and aimed to enhance educators’ ability to support student participation and occupational performance through a structured coaching framework. Guided by Dunn’s Sensory Processing Framework and the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model, the intervention included five individualized coaching sessions and the development of two key capstone products: a sensory processing coaching framework and a sensory processing toolkit and activity binder. The coaching framework incorporated observational tools, quick …

Reminiscence-Based Occupational Therapy: A Concept Analysis, Paige E. Laurent, Steven M. Gerardi
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
Dementia impacts cognitive function, emotional well-being, and occupational engagement, leading to diminished quality of life for older adults. Reminiscence therapy (RT) has been established as a viable approach to enhancing mood, cognitive performance, and social participation among individuals with dementia, however, its integration within occupational therapy (OT) practice remains under defined. The lack of the clear, defined role of OT in RBOT poses challenges for OT practitioners aiming to integrate reminiscence intervention within their scope of practice. The lack of a clearly defined role of OT in RBOT poses challenges for OT practitioners aiming to incorporate reminiscence interventions within their …

Educating Occupational Therapy Students On The Role, Scope, And Delivery Of Occupational Therapy Services In End-Of-Life Care, Zaria Favorite, Angela Labrie Blackwell, Shannon Kauppila
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
Patients at the end-of-life (EoL) experience a decline in body functions and performance skills along with challenges in maintaining occupational roles, routines, habits, and performance patterns (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2020). Despite their decline, patient want to continue to participate in their chosen occupations, which are unfulfilled due to the role, scope, and delivery of OT services in EoL care being misunderstood by OT students and practitioners, healthcare professionals, patients, families, and caregivers (Hammill et al., 2019; Knecht-Sabres et al., 2019; Mueller et al., 2021). There is a need for increased education and training so OT students can better …
Challenging Magicians’ Intuitive Insights: The Role Of Audience Participation In Experiencing A Magic Trick., Radoslaw Wincza, Gustav Kuhn
Challenging Magicians’ Intuitive Insights: The Role Of Audience Participation In Experiencing A Magic Trick., Radoslaw Wincza, Gustav Kuhn
School of Psychology
Magic is a performance art that relies on tricking the spectator’s mind into experiencing things that seem impossible. Experience in performing these tricks in front of live audiences provides magicians valuable insights into how spectators experience such tricks. However, most of these assumptions have not been empirically tested. Three widely held assumptions were selected: active participation increases the sense of wonder that participants experience, naming a card feels freer to the participant than physically selecting a card from a deck, and a trick that happens in the spectator’s hand is more impressive than if it happens elsewhere. To validate those …

Multiple Sclerosis Cognitive Needs, Entitlements, And Policy, Sandy A. Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women living with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience inequities, policy imbalance, and the feeling of overwhelming unfairness from those who govern policy. This qualitative phenomenological study was developed to focus on woman living with the disability of cognitive impairments in the MS paradigm that are not discussed, inadequately measured nor treated, making it difficult for those living with the disease to remain in the workforce and gain access to healthcare. Little research exists that identifies the unmet needs of those with MS and their relationship to cognitive impairments. Due to the progression of the cognitive impairments those living with MS have …

In-Situ Void Formation During Liquid Composite Molding For Preformed Warp, Weft, And Alternating Orientation Rtm Samples, Tanner Cal Garrett
In-Situ Void Formation During Liquid Composite Molding For Preformed Warp, Weft, And Alternating Orientation Rtm Samples, Tanner Cal Garrett
Theses and Dissertations
Carbon fiber reinforced parts are utilized by the transportation industry due to being strong yet lightweight. The highest quality parts are made using carbon fiber (CF) pre-impregnated with resin processed in an autoclave to reduce void content. The autoclave process is expensive and takes up a large amount of space, so liquid composite molding (LCM) is a less expensive alternative. The parts produced using LCM can be manufactured to rival the mechanical performance of parts made with pre-preg in an autoclave, but concerns remain over voids. Most research pertaining to void formation has been done ex-situ by either micro-CT or …

The Conditioning Of Reservoir Computing And Ng-Rc For Forecasting And The Effects Of Temporal Overparameterization, Daniel Jensen
The Conditioning Of Reservoir Computing And Ng-Rc For Forecasting And The Effects Of Temporal Overparameterization, Daniel Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Reservoir computing and "Next-generation reservoir computing" built on nonlinear vector autoregression are algorithms for predicting time series given past observations. Both algorithms have been successful in predicting some chaotic dynamical systems, but this success is not theoretically well understood. This paper considers the conditioning of both algorithms and the nature of the solutions found. With either algorithm, the least squares problem which is solved to give parameters as a function of the time series data is ill-conditioned, leading to parameter non-identifiability. Both algorithms fall into the class of "sloppy models." Standard practice to regularize either algorithm includes a bias towards …
Focus On Form: Perceptions Of Portuguese Immersion Teacher When Implementing The Capa Model, Priscila Isabel Rebicki Prestes
Focus On Form: Perceptions Of Portuguese Immersion Teacher When Implementing The Capa Model, Priscila Isabel Rebicki Prestes
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates Portuguese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers' perceptions when implementing the CAPA Model, a structured Focus on Form Instruction (FFI) approach aimed at improving grammatical accuracy in content-based learning. While immersion students develop strong communication skills, research highlights persistent grammatical inaccuracies due to the emphasis on meaning-based instruction. The CAPA Model seeks to bridge this gap by integrating explicit grammar instruction, fostering metalinguistic awareness, and enhancing linguistic accuracy without detracting from content learning. Findings reveal that teachers recognize the model’s benefits but face challenges such as limited planning time, a lack of pre-adapted materials, and difficulties implementing all …
Surface-Texture Fabrication Of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina Using Focused Ion-Beam Machining, Kameron M. Woodruff
Surface-Texture Fabrication Of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina Using Focused Ion-Beam Machining, Kameron M. Woodruff
Theses and Dissertations
Focused ion-beam machining (FIBM), a precise form of micro-machining, was tested for feasibility in the manufacturing of microscopic dimples in zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA), a wear resistant ceramic used in artificial joint replacements. The interaction between the ion-beam and the ceramic was characterized in terms of material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness, and notable irregularities (e.g. pitting, steps at vertical faces). These characteristics were used to design and machine patterns of microscopic dimples for tribological testing. The dimple size and pattern area were limited due to a slow MRR and high cost of milling. No significant difference in the coefficient of …

Investigation Of Temperature Control's Effects In Additive Friction Stir Deposition Of Al 7050-T7451, Jason Noah Glenn
Theses and Dissertations
Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) is a friction stir based process that includes the addition of material extruding through a bore in the center of the rotating tool. The deformation of the material from the tool rotation and high pressures result in fully dense depositions printed at very high rates with forged like mechanical properties. While deposition properties of varying alloys have been increasingly published, little work has been done investigating control of the process and as with all additive processes, consistency and predictability are of significant concern before implementation can occur. One common control method implemented in Friction Stir …

Urban Heat Island Mitigation: A Gis Based Analysis Of Cool Roofing, Canopy Cover, And Imperviousness In Rochester, New York, Benjamin Lyon
Theses
Urban Heat Islands (UHI’s) pose an increasing risk to public and environmental health. This phenomenon of heightened temperatures occurs in developed cities around the world, largely due to anthropogenic changes in the landscape. This study investigates the interactions of two UHI mitigation strategies, cool roofing, and altering vegetation cover and impervious surfaces, within the city of Rochester, New York. Using Landsat 9 band 10 imagery and land cover data, surface temperature patterns were analyzed in relation to roof color, imperviousness, and canopy cover across the neighborhoods within the city. GIS based statistical analyses were utilized to predict temperature changes resulting …
