Cultivating Resilience Through Play: An Educational Tool For Early Childhood Development, Lauren Soltis

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Educating caregivers on early childhood development can empower them to use therapeutic play to support their child’s growth in life skills. This project aimed to enhance caregivers' understanding of play-based strategies that promote resilience during early development. The educational tool was designed for occupational therapists to share with caregivers of children receiving OT services. It simplifies key developmental milestones related to play, social interaction, and the foundational skills needed to build resilience. The occupational therapy team reported that the tool is both relevant and practical for pediatric use, and they believe it will support therapeutic carryover at home.

Supply Chain Innovation: A Framework Of Public Procurement As A Demand-Side Innovation Driver, Peter Adjei-Bamfo, Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Ferry Jie, Kerry Brown, Reza Kiani Mavi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Purpose: Much of the supply chain innovation (SCI) literature has focused on innovation as driven by supply-side factors that often lead to incremental product changes. Such marginal innovation outcomes make suppliers less responsive to government buyers’ innovation needs for addressing societal challenges. Building on this observation, this article conceptualises how a demand-side innovation driver, namely public procurement, influences SCI radically and incrementally from downstream. Design/methodology/approach Employing the conceptual research approach and following established guidelines for building theory and conceptual development in management and supply chain research, we re-examine the SCI literature for existing assumptions about government innovation procurement and explain …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Approximately 26,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in Australia each year, and only 13% of patients survive their event and return home. Survival variability from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests can be explained by a range of factors. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education quality-improvement programs focusing on identified elements of basic life support provision in concert with resuscitation system interventions have been associated with significant improvements in survival after cardiac arrest. Surf Life Saving Australia members respond to approximately 65 cardiac arrests per year in the community while on duty and have successfully resuscitated many beachgoers over the years. In addition to this, …

Investigating The Role Of Blood Models In Predicting Rupture Status Of Intracranial Aneurysms, Zonghan Lyu, Mostafa Rezaeitaleshmahalleh, Nan Mu, Jingfeng Jiang

Michigan Tech Publications

Purpose. Selecting patients with high-risk intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is of clinical importance. Recent work in machine learning-based (ML) predictive modeling has demonstrated that lesion-specific hemodynamics within IAs can be combined with other information to provide critical insights for assessing rupture risk. However, how the adoption of blood rheology models (i.e., Newtonian and Non-Newtonian blood models) may influence ML-based predictive modeling of IA rupture risk has not been investigated. Methods and Materials. In this study, we conducted transient CFD simulations using Newtonian and non-Newtonian rheology (Carreau-Yasuda [CY]) models on a large cohort of 'patient-specific' IA geometries (>100) under pulsatile flow conditions to …

This new version of MESS is a web-based application with an SQL database and is developed using C#, Blazor, and ASP.NET Core Identity. New features include allowing operators to record their part …

Calibrating For Nonlinearity In The Ciber-2 Detectors, Lilly Blanton, Candice Fazar, Michael Zemcov Apr 2025

Calibrating For Nonlinearity In The Ciber-2 Detectors, Lilly Blanton, Candice Fazar, Michael Zemcov

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment-2 (CIBER-2) is a sounding rocket payload that utilizes HAWAII-2RG sensors to observe faint and diffuse sources in the extragalactic background light. In these detector arrays, each pixel is an individual light-sensing diode. The capacitance across each pixel is dependent on the changing voltage across the pixel as electrons are liberated from the detector material and pass into the readout system. To investigate the relationship between capacitance and voltage in the CIBER-2 detectors and effectively correct for non-linearities induced by the increasing voltage on capacitance, we developed algorithms to model the relationship between capacitance and voltage …

A Story Through Two Mediums, Samantha Jefferson Apr 2025

A Story Through Two Mediums, Samantha Jefferson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Inspired by story telling and my interests in multiple different art mediums, I decided upon a creative project utilizing both photography and comic/graphic novels to act as a memoir and documentary of my semester abroad in Japan. While I was there I spent time studying the concept of the “Medium is the Message” and through this project I continued to explore what that really looked like. I took photos and kept a diary while in Japan. Upon coming back, I started the comic book process of storyboarding, making a script, drawing/coloring, and finally editing. Simultaneously I organized my photos and …

Probing Gluon Contribution To Proton Spin With Star 2015 Endcap Electromagnetic Calorimeter Data, Christopher Noga Apr 2025

Probing Gluon Contribution To Proton Spin With Star 2015 Endcap Electromagnetic Calorimeter Data, Christopher Noga

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Probing the gluon’s contribution to proton spin is an important goal of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) located at Brookhaven National Laboratory. We aim to refine our knowledge of the gluon spin contribution to aid in solving the proton spin puzzle as the contributions of the proton’s constituent parts to its spin remain uncertain. In this analysis, we utilize 52 pb-1 of longitudinally polarized proton-proton (p+p) collision data taken by the STAR experiment at √s = 200 GeV. Our measurement uses the Endcap Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EEMC), which is stationed at a pseudorapidity range of 1.1 < η < 2.0 and can detect photons from the decays of neutral pions (π0s). A new data quality assurance (QA) method has been implemented, which increases the number of entries in QA histograms such as the reconstructed π0 mass, signal fraction, and number of towers hit in the EEMC. The original QA method suffered from accidental numerical losses of π0 candidates due to ROOT command line methods, while the new method recovers them using full STAR libraries. The revised data will be used to calculate the spin-dependent asymmetry of π0 production (ALL), which is sensitive to the gluon’s contribution to the proton’s spin. The status and impact of the new quality assurance method will be presented, along with prospects for the ALL measurement.

During Valparaiso University's annual service learning trip to Costa Rica in March 2024, five public health clinics were conducted in the communities of La Carpio, Boca Arenal, and San Gerardo, which held a combined population of approximately 69,000 at the time, most of which were Nicaraguan immigrants. These clinics were led by students and translators, small groups of which were sent out each day to conduct home visits within these neighborhoods to gather qualitative and quantitative data, including demographic information, details about the home environment, health insurance status, reasons for immigrating to Costa Rica, and perception of health threats from …

A Search For Correlations Between Binary Stars And Carbon Chemistry In Planetary Nebulae, Hunter Wood, Leah Shafer, Peyton Mccallips, Angela Webber Apr 2025

A Search For Correlations Between Binary Stars And Carbon Chemistry In Planetary Nebulae, Hunter Wood, Leah Shafer, Peyton Mccallips, Angela Webber

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Planetary nebulae are one of the last stages of stellar evolution for low-mass stars, those that have a mass of less than about eight times the mass of the Sun. As the star ejects its outer layers at the end of its life, the high temperature of the remaining core, what we call the central star, can ionize the gaseous ejected layers and make them glow. Many complex carbon-based and oxygen-based molecules can form in these ejected layers, and their presence can be detected through spectroscopy. Also detected in some planetary nebulae are binary central stars, where another object is …

Binary Star System Modeling Of A Double White Dwarf System In The Planetary Nebula Pn G012.1-11.2, Leah Shafer Apr 2025

Binary Star System Modeling Of A Double White Dwarf System In The Planetary Nebula Pn G012.1-11.2, Leah Shafer

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Planetary nebulae are the ejected outer layers of dying stars. At the center of these planetary nebulae remains the cores of the dead stars that created them. These remaining cores eventually become what we call white dwarfs. In order to understand planetary nebulae, white dwarfs, and their origins we can study the remaining core, or central star, inside the planetary nebula. We can do this by determining the physical properties of these central stars. One way to do this is if the central star has a companion—is in a binary star system. So I modeled the central star of the …
