Forearm Muscle Alterations During Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction, Jacob Hutchison, Mark Timmons, Brandon Jones
Forearm Muscle Alterations During Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction, Jacob Hutchison, Mark Timmons, Brandon Jones
Appalachian Student Healthcare Research Review
Background: This study evaluated the relationship between grip strength and forearm skeletal muscle architecture during maximal grip contractions. Grip strength is a gauge for many different health related attributes, yet research on muscle architecture has been primarily completed in lower limb studies. This study aims to develop a better understanding of how biomechanical architecture of muscle operates to produce force during maximal isometric contractions of the forearms.
Methods: Sixteen individuals participated in this investigation (12 males, 4 females, mean age: 20.6 ± 2.5 years, mean height: 177.8 ± 8.3cm, mean weight: 79.2 ± 17.6Kg). Participants tested grip strength by performing …
Value Creation And Value Capture In Indian Garment Sector Bargaining, Russell Morton
Value Creation And Value Capture In Indian Garment Sector Bargaining, Russell Morton
Discussion Papers
This paper examines creation and distribution of surplus from global value chains (GVCs) in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) domestic supply chains. While GVC participation can enhance growth and productivity, low prices paid to small input suppliers raise concerns that gains from GVC participation accrue to the large exporters (the buyers). Supply-chain transactions often occur in bargained agreements with non-price terms that increase small supplier surplus, such as quantity stability and other insurance-like terms. Therefore, low input prices reflect both buyers’ share of surplus generated by non-price terms and buyer capture. I enrich a Nash bargaining model to study how …

Clinical Education Program For Hair Removal To Reduce Surgical Site Infections, Madison Smith, Dana Todd
Clinical Education Program For Hair Removal To Reduce Surgical Site Infections, Madison Smith, Dana Todd
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Abstract
Surgical site infections (SSIs) significantly impact surgical patients and with one contributory to their development is hair removal method, education about surgical hair removal methods is minimal in continued educational programs. The purpose of this project was to provide an educational program that discussed hair removal methods to reduce surgical site infections. The staff was educated on methods for hair removal in surgical patients, recommendations from manufacturers of the product, hospital policies regarding hair removal and governing organizational guidelines. Over two days for a 10-hour shift each day, a poster board and a 15-30-minute presentation then a pre/post-test was …

Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl
Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl
Honors Projects
When first looking at a children’s book, it appears to be a simple creative project. However, when one finds out the components that go into making one, it becomes clear that simplicity is deceiving. Research, ideation, rough drafts, and scripts are just a few of the necessary components for the finished product, and each one of these components can take multiple days or weeks to complete. This essay is a reflection on my experience of creating a picture book in one semester as I attempt to answer the questions “What if the most efficient process for creating a children's picture …
Exploring The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Collegiate Athlete Mental Health Care: A Concept Analysis, Jacquelyn Arnett, Lesley Khan-Farooqi
Exploring The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Collegiate Athlete Mental Health Care: A Concept Analysis, Jacquelyn Arnett, Lesley Khan-Farooqi
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
Adverse mental health outcomes in collegiate athletes are on the rise in the United States, prompting concerns about the impact of external surroundings on their well-being. Occupational therapy (OT) is a profession that specializes in environmental- and occupation-centered intervention, approaches to mental health care not currently being utilized in collegiate athlete populations. Despite these potential benefits, OT practitioners (OTPs) are not an established member of the care team in current athlete mental health care structures, likely because many stakeholders do not understand the unique services OTPs can offer. Walker and Avant’s eight-stage concept analysis was employed to examine the role …

Early Integrated Baseball In Missouri, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Early Integrated Baseball In Missouri, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Monographs
Beginning in the years before the US Civil War, African Americans fled or emigrated from the South to northern and western states and territories. Descendants of these emigrants occasionally had the opportunity to play baseball for predominantly white town teams and minor league clubs prior to 1946 under circumstances documented in states such as Kansas and California. Those same opportunities were virtually nonexistent in states where slavery had been legal at the outset of the Civil War. A few instances of integrated baseball teams involved in intercity competition in Missouri, a border state that remained in the Union, have been …

Integrated Baseball In Ohio, 1891–1907: Chavous, Harrison, Fountain, And Follis, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Monographs
In addition to Moses Fleetwood Walker, Welday (Weldy) Walker, John “Bud” Fowler, and Grant “Home Run” Johnson, other Black baseball players were members of integrated teams involved in intercity competition in Ohio during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when racial segregation was widespread. The experiences of four of these players are described. James Chavous was a native of Marysville who pitched for Marysville and several other teams, including the Page Fence Giants. In 1904, an injury to his hand limited his role on the diamond to serving as an umpire, primarily in games between white teams. Edward Webster …

Paper Or Digital? Comparing Vocabulary Learning From Internet Search To A Physical Dictionary, Olivia L. Hamilton
Honors Theses
There is an increasing presence of technology found in the educational environment. With that there are many questions about the effectiveness of learning when information can be re-accessed with the click of a mouse. Information is more accessible than ever online but expecting to be able to rely on the internet may make learning less effective than other learning methods, such as paper. Continuing research has shown deficits, which could imply a digital presence is harming the learning environment. 125 students completed this study which compared differences between paper versus online learning platforms. The study tested peoples word translation accuracy …
