Policy Project Optimizing Post-Discharge Process: Creating A Policy For Improved Efficiency, Deniece S. Parkinson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The immediate period following hospital discharge is critical for ensuring continuity of care and reducing adverse outcomes. However, the current post-discharge processes utilized in community care could be more effective. The fragmented approach involves multiple individuals, often leading to patient confusion, missed visits, and inefficient communication. These issues contribute to high rehospitalization rates, frequent emergency room visits, and increased healthcare costs. This project proposes a streamlined post-discharge policy managed by a centralized team of one provider and a Nurse Care Manager. The policy aims to refine the processes currently used in each market into a consolidated, well-defined care model to …

Quality Improvement Project Enhancing Patient Care In Nurse Practitioner Private Practices: A Train-The-Trainer Approach To Implementing Evidence-Based Chronic Mental Disease Management Interventions, Chioma Waters

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Chronic mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are frequently treated by nurse practitioners (NPs) in outpatient private practices. Despite the evidence supporting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a first-line intervention, its utilization remains limited in NP settings, often due to lack of training and confidence. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to evaluate whether a structured train-the-trainer program could improve NP confidence in applying CBT in practice. Guided by the Iowa Model and Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, this quality improvement project utilized a quasi-experimental, pre-post survey design to assess …

Seeking Common Ground With A Conversational Chatbot, Judit Dombi, Tetyana Sydorenko, Veronika Timpe-Laughlin

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conversational AI is advancing rapidly, enabling significant improvements in chatbots’ conversational abilities. Currently, available conversational chatbots (e.g., Snapchat’s MyAI) appear to generate fairly realistic, often human-like output. As collaboration between humans and machines becomes more common, and AI systems are increasingly viewed as more than just tools, understanding human communication in such contexts is crucial. Despite the vast array of applications and the increasing number of human-bot interactions, research on how humans interact with conversational chatbots is scarce. One possible reason for this gap is that studying human-computer communication may require adaptations of existing pragmatic frameworks, due to the unique …

Center for Life in Extreme Environments Publications

Nearly all environmental monitoring and research of chemical exposure in the aquatic environment relies on grab sampling of water and/or sediment providing only a snapshot in time. Passive sampling of water provides a more representative estimate of exposure compared to grab sampling, but current passive samplers have a limited working range of chemical properties. We tested a novel Composite Integrative Passive Sampler (CIPS) that simultaneously accumulates both hydrophobic and hydrophilic chemicals in water in the Tijuana River Estuary (TRE) on the U.S.-Mexico border. Quantitative targeted analysis detected 169 of the 193 targeted chemicals, and 128 of them were detected in …

Sesame Street: From Puppets To Pixels, Blaise C. Wingold

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Sesame Street has been around since 1969 and is still creating new episodes. Joan Ganz Cooney created the program in an attempt to use television to educate and entertain children simultaneously. The show set out goals to create smarter, kinder, and stronger kids. It uniquely featured a diverse cast and was targeted towards disadvantaged youth. However, the world has changed a lot since 1969. In this research, I use a qualitative content analysis to determine how exactly the show has evolved and adapted to target today’s children versus the children in 1969. Additionally, the paper hypothesizes reasons why the show …

Remaking Rulemaking: Lessons From The History Of Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 54(B), Brad Baranowski, Emery G. Lee Iii

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article uses the lost history of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 54(b) to provide a framework for rulemaking at the busy intersection of complex litigation and appellate finality. The drafters of the original civil rules spent more time thinking through how to efficiently combine claims and parties in civil actions—a promised benefit of the proposed law-equity merger—than about how combined claims should be dis-assembled. This failure would haunt the original Advisory Committee on Civil Rules for years. Nowhere was this more evident than in the first decades of Rule 54(b)’s existence.

Promulgated in 1938, Rule 54(b) was designed to …

From Clusters To Frameworks: Synthesis, Engineering, And Application Of Sub-2-Nanometer Nanoclusters And Microporous Covalent Organic Frameworks, Melika E Kenari

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we have investigated the complex interplay of atomic composition, structural modifications in covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and atomic-level designs in bimetallic chiral nanoclusters (NCs). By synthesizing COFs and bimetallic NCs, we elucidated how these elements govern their exceptional catalytic, optical, and electronic properties. Our work demonstrates that precise atomic adjustments, tailored pore engineering in COFs, and the strategic use of chiral ligands in NCs enable fine-tuned reactivity and stability. These advancements were applied to enhance photocatalytic performance, optimize iodine adsorption, and facilitate asymmetric A3 coupling reactions, laying a robust foundation for practical applications and future innovations in …

Effective Elementary Vocabulary Instructional Strategies, Staci A. Brown

Masters Projects

Vocabulary knowledge upon entering school is a known predictor of literacy success (Moody et al., 2018; NPR, 2000). However, students enter school with various levels of vocabulary knowledge, creating gaps in literacy skills. Teachers must be equipped with the most efficient and effective vocabulary instructional strategies to compensate for these deficits in vocabulary and help all students become successful readers (Moody et al., 2018). This project seeks to research the most successful methods of structuring and implementing vocabulary instruction and provide this knowledge to kindergarten and second-grade teachers through professional development (PD). The PD will consist of several workshops introducing …

Cascading Effects: Analyzing Project Failure Impact In The Maven Central Ecosystem, Mina Shehata

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Abstract—This study examines failure propagation patterns within the Maven Central ecosystem, a critical software de- pendency repository, through comprehensive analysis of dependency networks using the Goblin framework. Our dual-sampling methodology, investigating both top dependencies and random libraries, revealed two distinct failure propagation patterns that pose significant risks to ecosystem stability. Core infrastructure failures, particularly evident in cases like the AWS SDK family with 429,800 total dependencies, create immediate and widespread disruption, affecting an average of 20,402 dependent projects and propagating through dependency chains averaging 90.80 levels deep.

Our analysis of peripheral projects reveals their significant cascading effects, with higher average …

Purpose/Background:This scoping review explores the effectiveness of adaptive support ventilation (ASV) compared to conventional ventilation modes in reducing postoperative extubation times in adults undergoing general anesthesia with ventilatory support. Ventilator weaning is a critical determinant of recovery and outcomes in intensive care settings. ASV, a closed-loop ventilation mode, automatically adjusts ventilator parameters based on patient-specific respiratory mechanics and demand to optimize the weaning process. Although promising, evidence regarding ASV’s effectiveness remains inconsistent across different patient populations and surgical contexts.

Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted from August 2023 to December 2024 across PubMed, CINAHL, Medline, JAMA, and Google …

Quantifying And Characterizing Microplastics In The Greater Philadelphia Region, Emily Lybashev Apr 2025

Quantifying And Characterizing Microplastics In The Greater Philadelphia Region, Emily Lybashev

Biology Honors Papers

Plastic is one of the world's most useful and versatile materials, so it is no wonder that 400 million tons are produced yearly. When exposed to weathering, heat, water, and organisms, plastic degrades and produces microplastics. These microplastics have managed to leach into our oceans, local waterways, bodies, and even our atmosphere. The negative implications of microplastic contamination in our environment are slowly being uncovered with concerns of toxin buildup. Additionally, the amount of microplastics we are exposed to through local waterways is rarely quantified. Though microplastic research is picking up pace, the Schuylkill River which spans the Greater Philadelphia …

Task Demands Influence Search Strategy Selection In Otoconia-Deficient Mice, Ryan M. Yoder, Lucas C. Carstensen, Keshav Jagannathan

Psychology

Introduction: The vestibular system plays a crucial role in visual and non-visual navigation. Our recent study found that signals from the otolith organs are necessary for mice’s use of distal visual cues to guide navigation to an invisible goal. Somewhat surprisingly, however, performance was not significantly impaired on some spatial tasks (e.g., Barnes maze reference memory task), questioning the role of otolith signals in visual navigation.

Methods: We report the results of several additional tests of reference memory performance and search strategy use on two versions of the Barnes maze, in an attempt to establish further understanding of the otolithic …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Implementation Of A Food Insecurity Screening Tool In Identifying Risk Amongst Nicu Families, Jessica Daniels Bsn, Rn, Sahtiah Williams Bsn, Rn, Bobby Bellflower Dnsc, Nnp-Bc, Faanp

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are critically ill and at risk of increased infections, developmental delays, and higher readmission rates after discharging due to complex health needs when compared to healthy term newborns. Nutrition has been widely recognized as an important predictor of readmission and developmental delay. However, current practice often does not provide any screening for food insecurity (FI) in NICU families, which assumes security and displays a gap in care surrounding discharge planning. This quality improvement project implements the use of an FI screening tool for NICU families to help practitioners identify FI …

Lunar Secondary Crater Identification Through Semi-Automated Data Aggregation: The Beginnings Of The Pipeline, Annalyse Dickinson Apr 2025

Lunar Secondary Crater Identification Through Semi-Automated Data Aggregation: The Beginnings Of The Pipeline, Annalyse Dickinson

Physics and Astronomy Honors Papers

Based on the number of primary craters on a surface, one can determine the age of that surface, but secondary craters contaminate that count. No single characteristic can distinguish primaries from secondaries with certainty; a feature that is present in one collection of secondaries can be absent in another due to the multitude of processes involved in their formation and degradation. We aim to develop a pipeline that will classify craters based on characteristics that have been used to differentiate secondaries on the Moon, including elevation profiles, degradation state, radar circular polarization ratio, rock abundance, and spatial clustering. We utilize …

The Role And Expression Of Pros-1 In The C. Elegans Gonad, Brandon W. Thomas, Mary B. Kroetz, Roberta Challener

Undergraduate Theses

The nematode, formally known as Caenorhabditis elegans, has served as an excellent model organism in understanding fundamental biological processes, including those governed by conserved genes like pros-1. pros-1 is partially responsible for the formation of tubular structures within the organism. Glial cells and excretory canals are both examples of tubular structures governed by pros-1. pros-1 orchestrates the embryonic development of these cell types by modulating cell proliferation and differentiation, thus ensuring proper morphogenesis and organogenesis. Its regulatory influence likely extends beyond embryogenesis, potentially affecting reproductive processes as well. Furthermore, the evolutionary conservation of pros-1 underscores its significance …
