Leaf cuticle is the waxy envelope that protects leaves from desiccation, UV damage, and abrasion. The cuticle encodes information about a plant's chemistry and leaf epidermal and stomatal cell morphology. Fossil leaf cuticle has been used to determine taxonomic affinities for almost two centuries and recognized in recent decades for its value in reconstructing paleoenvironments and paleoclimates, especially atmospheric CO2. Fossil leaf cuticle preparation techniques are typically reported as single workflows tied to individual studies, starting with finding fossils in the field through the steps of preparing cuticle for chemical and morphological analysis, including decisions about type of microscopy and …

Efficacy Of Platelet Rich Plasma On Thumb Basal Joint Osteoarthritis: A Narrative Review, Vrushank Shah, Alexander King
Efficacy Of Platelet Rich Plasma On Thumb Basal Joint Osteoarthritis: A Narrative Review, Vrushank Shah, Alexander King
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a potential treatment for carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis, with studies suggesting it may offer more durable symptom relief compared to corticosteroids. A comprehensive review of four studies, including two randomized controlled trials (RCTs), a retrospective study, and a pilot study, revealed that both PRP and corticosteroid injections led to short-term improvements in pain and function. However, PRP demonstrated significantly better long-term outcomes, with VAS scores decreasing from 75 to 20 in the PRP group at 12 months, compared to a modest reduction from 70 to 65 in the corticosteroid group. Additionally, PRP showed a …
Personalizing Intermittent Fasting: The Role Of Microbiome Diversity And Fiber Intake In Shaping Health Outcomes, Jana Gjini, Robin Moore, Venkateswar Venkataraman
Personalizing Intermittent Fasting: The Role Of Microbiome Diversity And Fiber Intake In Shaping Health Outcomes, Jana Gjini, Robin Moore, Venkateswar Venkataraman
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
BACKGROUND: Intermittent fasting (IF) has been linked to improved metabolic health, reduced inflammation, and increased longevity in animal models. These effects are thought to be mediated through changes in the gut microbiome. Murine studies consistently show that IF enhances microbial diversity and promotes beneficial species like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, improving metabolic profiles and gut barrier function. However, human studies reveal inconsistent results, suggesting that individual-level factors such as baseline microbiome composition and fiber intake may influence response to IF.
HYPOTHESIS: Baseline gut microbiome diversity and habitual dietary fiber intake modulate the metabolic and inflammatory benefits of intermittent fasting in humans. …

Ivak, Daniel Chandler, John Tkaczynski, Thomas M. Keck, Comfort A. Boateng, Eleni Papadopoulos, Barry D. Waterhouse, Rachel L. Navarra
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The consequences of modulating subtypes of G protein coupled dopamine receptors are broadly studied for their role in decision making behavior, specifically in situations involving uncertain risk and reward. The actions of dopamine D4 receptors (D4Rs) on these complex processes are the least understood, particularly due to a lack of available compounds with suitable selectivity for D4Rs. Further, current research often fails to evaluate how modulating specific dopamine receptor subtypes may affect locomotor activity and anxiety-like behavior as confounding factors prior to assessing their function in behavioral assays of higher order decision making. The goal of the current study was …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common leukemia in adult patients, with a 5-year survival rate of less than 30 percent. Therefore, more effective therapeutic strategies are required to prolong the survival of AML patients. Importantly, anti-apoptotic proteins, especially B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), overexpression in AML is associated with uncontrolled growth as well as chemoresistance. Unsurprisingly, Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) overexpresses in AML and associated with poor prognosis and chemoresistance. The FDA-approved BTK inhibitor, ibrutinib, has been successful in treating other hematologic malignancies, but a proportion of patients relapse mainly because of acquired mutations at Cys481Ser (C481S) in the …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The usage of personality as a method of behavioral prediction and outcomes of success has grown considerably over the last few decades. This project explores predicting user personality profiles via the Big Five personality index through the integration of advanced natural language processing techniques as well as neural networks. Using a dataset provided by Dr. James W. Pennebaker, participants analyze an image—formally referred to as a thematic apperception test—and write a thorough paragraph describing the details. This free-form text, along with their personality test results, is captured in a structured dataset. Many deep-learning and machine learning models have been used …
A Novel Approach To Attention-Based Models In Image Completion: Weighted Spatial-Attention Using Radial Distance, Tyler D. Kuper
A Novel Approach To Attention-Based Models In Image Completion: Weighted Spatial-Attention Using Radial Distance, Tyler D. Kuper
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Humans infer missing visual information by focusing on spatial relationships in the context of their surroundings. Machine learning aims to replicate this skill through image completion, a fundamental task in current computer vision research. While advances in self-attention layers have recently enhanced generative machine learning models for text, these mechanisms still currently lack the capability to handle sparse image completion efficiently. We introduce a distance-based attention mechanism that uses radial-based weights to efficiently reconstruct an image. We compare this attention mechanism with self-attention and a fully connected network on an image completion task using the MNIST dataset. Our results show …

Fairness In Recommender Systems: Balancing Bias In Academic Paper Selection, Zachary Bergin
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Bias in academic paper selection remains a consistent issue, even within processes designed to promote fairness, such as double-blind peer review, bias stays persistent. In this paper we investigate demographic bias while particularly focusing on racial bias in the process of selecting academic papers and explore the impact of fairness aware recommender systems on the demographic parity. To build an effective system our focus is on the Special Interest Group on Computer Human Interaction (SIGCHI) a pillar in the community, we develop a neural network-based recommender system that uses real demographic data collected by other systems withing the context of …
Ddos Detection And Mitigation Using Multiple Programmable Switches For Industrial Network Security, Seth Howard
Ddos Detection And Mitigation Using Multiple Programmable Switches For Industrial Network Security, Seth Howard
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Given the exponential growth in our infrastructure’s reliance on digital systems and large interconnected networks to operate, cybersecurity efforts have not been able to keep up with vulnerabilities attackers can exploit. Specifically, their reliance on industrial network protocols in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. These protocols are great in terms of the functionality they provide, but are severely lacking in terms of security, leaving the networks vulnerable to cyberattacks. One of the more common protocols, Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3), is particularly vulnerable to Denial-of-Service type attacks. In this work we explore the use of P4-based programmable networks …

Synthetic Dataset Generator To Assist In Training Of Multilayer Perceptron Based Neural Network, Megan Leach
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Synthetic dataset generation attempts to solve the issue of needing large datasets to train models and observe behaviors in both a cost and time effective way. This project aims to highlight the value of synthetic data creation and how it was useful when training a neural network model by creating a synthetic dataset generator for a specific model in order to evaluate its behavior in difference scenarios. The model that was used in this project was created to select high-quality papers while maximizing the diversity of authors based on race, gender, and country characteristics, essentially mimicking a review process. The …
Leveraging P4 Programmable Switches For Resilient Operation And Design Of Phasor Measurement Unit Networks, Eva Casto
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The power grid utilizes a device called the phasor measurement unit (PMU), allowing power system administrators to remotely monitor and manage the state of the grid in Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS). The advantages of PMUs – such as fine-grained, time-synchronized measurements and efficient, decentralized monitoring – are what make them key devices in the power grid. However, PMU technology also comes with new threats of the digital age, like malfunctions and cyberattacks, which can result in missing and faulty measurements that compromise power grid observability. P4 programmable networks can be used to detect faulty PMU data in a decentralized, …

Automation Programming For Uhv-Cvd Growth Of Group Iv Materials, William Hay
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The automation programming of a UHV-CVD reactor for group IV materials was performed. The reactor was programmed to perform all the necessary functions for a Germanium (Ge) growth with little response from the user. The overall goal was to fix an Argon purge program to clean out the process chamber of gases and create an Excel output program to ease any work on the user. There were also general fixes and address name changes that occurred throughout the program. Then, a one step and two step growth of a Ge material was formed in a UHV-CVD reaction for analysis. Germanium …
Defect Characterization Of Sic Schottky Barrier Diode Using Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy, Zachary I. Mccoy
Defect Characterization Of Sic Schottky Barrier Diode Using Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy, Zachary I. Mccoy
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The aim of this project is to use deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) to energetically evaluate defects by using the carrier concentration dependence on temperature and where these carriers may experience deviation from standard predictions. These defects become apparent through multiple C-V measurements that are swept through a temperature range. By analyzing trends with respect to temperature, the defects can be energetically “located,” and thus identified. This identification can help streamline semiconductor material manufacturing/growth because DLTS identifies potential defect causes by providing data to characterize semiconductor mid-band defects. DLTS can assess nearly all parameters associated with traps/defects including density, thermal …

Design, Simulation, And Testing Of Planar Transformer For Smart Green Power Node (Sgpn) Isolation Using Ansys, Brooke Scott
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The goal of this project was to design and simulate a small, high-frequency, planar, ferrite-core transformer which can be used in a variety of applications, the most relevant of which is photovoltaic (PV) converter systems, which often require bulky transformers to function properly. The current research involved several processes: (1) Understanding and designing a tutorial for the use of Ansys software to aid in the efficient development and modeling of transformers, (2) designing and simulating a planar transformer in Ansys to be used in a solar converter, specifically the Smart Green Power Node (SGPN), and (3) testing the planar transformer …
Investigation And Characterization Of Silicon Carbide Power Mosfets, Vincent Hassman
Investigation And Characterization Of Silicon Carbide Power Mosfets, Vincent Hassman
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
As engineers constantly seek to make solar power systems smaller, cheaper, and more efficient, technological enhancements in the electronics that run them are required. One of the most fundamental electronic components of any solar system is the inverter, which takes DC current from the solar cell and turns it into AC current that is supported by the grid. This is done with metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs). Through more advanced MOSFET technology, inverters can switch at a higher frequency, increasing efficiency and reducing size and cost.
MOSFET performance can be enhanced by swapping the traditional silicon substrate with …
The Importance Of Optimising Performance Within Retrofit Programmes, Seamus Harrington, Mark Mulville
The Importance Of Optimising Performance Within Retrofit Programmes, Seamus Harrington, Mark Mulville
Conference Papers
Ireland’s Climate Action Plan details a roadmap of measures that seek to achieve net-zero target carbon emissions by 2050. In this context, Ireland has introduced the National Retrofitting Scheme (NRS) which has set a goal of retrofitting c. 30% of existing dwellings to a Building Energy Rating (BER) of B2 by 2030. The route to attaining this rating is dependent on the current specification and configuration of each individual property, therefore it can promote the adoption of retrofit techniques that achieve the required BER rating as opposed to focussing on optimisation of dwelling performance. The pre-cursor to the NRS was …

Computer Science Faculty Works
We present the curricular design, pedagogy, and goals of an introductory-level course on computer systems that introduces parallel and distributed computing (PDC) to students who have only a CS1 background. With the ubiquity of multicore processors, cloud computing, and hardware accelerators, PDC topics have become fundamental knowledge areas in the undergraduate CS curriculum. As a result, it is increasingly important for students to learn a common core of introductory parallel and distributed computing topics and to develop parallel thinking skills early in their CS studies. Our introductory-level course focuses on three main curricular goals: 1) understanding how a computer runs …

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) may persist in food processing environments (FPEs) alongside diverse background microflora. While microbial communities in FPEs can in- fluence Lm survival, their role in supporting or suppressing its growth remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize the microflora in floor swabs and air samples collected from a dairy processing facility across three seasons and assess their potential impact on the growth of a Lm test strain previously isolated from a dairy processing environment. A total of 167 environmental isolates, representing 30 bacterial genera, were identified. Pseudomonas was consistently prevalent across all sample types. Seasonal shifts in bacterial …
Exploring The Impact Of Inclusive Education Knowledge On School Administrators' Attitudes: A Quantitative Analysis Of Influencing Factors And Leadership Preparedness, Michelle Everitt
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Federal laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) establish the legal foundation for inclusive education and mandate that students with disabilities (SWD) receive access to education in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). To achieve the high-stakes accountability standards of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), schools are also responsible for ensuring academic progress for all students, including those with disabilities. However, simply complying with these policies does not guarantee meaningful participation for SWD. School administrators play a central role in advancing inclusive education, yet …
Pláticas, Reflexiones, Y Resistencia: Exploring How First-Generation Latino Males Leverage Community Cultural Wealth In Education-Based Doctoral Programs, Daniel Noriega
Education (PhD) Dissertations
The Latino/a community is the largest ethnic minority group in the United States and continues to grow. Although enrollment in higher education is on the rise, Latino/a students complete their degrees at lower rates than their white counterparts. This disparity is further magnified when accounting for gender, with Latina women outpacing Latino men at every educational milestone. Disparities in doctorate attainment lead to the underrepresentation of Latino men in student support or leadership positions, which may negatively impact the success of Latino students. This qualitative study examines how First-Generation Latino males leverage Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) to navigate systemic barriers …
