Conference Presentation Abstracts

According to the most recent review on necrotizing fasciitis (NF), NF often presents with nonspecific findings such as pain, erythema, and swelling. Clinical features include pain out of proportion to physical examination, failure to respond to broadspectrum antibiotics, and the presence of cutaneous bullae on the skin. We report a rare case in which the diagnosis of NF was unexpected due to its atypical presentation and was ultimately prompted by further underlying exploration in the setting of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and persistent Afib with RVR. Case Summary: A 61-year-old male with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus presented with …

How The Code Of The Street Contributes To Incarceration Among Black Women, Jennifer Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Rising incarceration rates of Black women in the United States highlight the urgent need to examine factors contributing to this trend. This study investigates how Elijah Anderson’s Code of the Street influences behaviors that lead to incarceration among Black women in low-resource neighborhoods. Via the social disorganization theory, the research explored how economic instability, weakened social institutions, and community disorder contribute to adopting the street code and how adherence to the code contributes to participants’ incarceration. This qualitative study employed thematic analysis of interviews with 11 formerly incarcerated Black women, focusing on their perceptions regarding how the street code shaped …

The Legal Vacuum In Cognitive Privacy And Brain Data, Kayla Flanders May 2025

The Legal Vacuum In Cognitive Privacy And Brain Data, Kayla Flanders

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

There is an entire world emerging—technology capable of interpreting our brainwaves to predict which ads we’ll respond to, lift our moods, or queue the perfect playlist. U.S. patent filings in neurotechnology are soaring, mirroring the surge seen in gene-editing innovations.

Yet while gene-editing tools have sparked fierce public and ethical debate, neurotechnology companies are quietly amassing vast troves of brainwave data with far less scrutiny. What legal or ethical constraints are in place to govern the collection, use, or commercialization of this deeply personal data? Positioned at the intersection of data privacy, intellectual property, and scientific innovation, these questions demand …

A Multimodal Intervention To Improve Treatment And Clinical Outcomes In Children With Recurrent Otitis Media, Daniel Courtaney

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Acute otitis media is the number one cause for primary health care visits and antibiotic prescriptions in the pediatric population (El Feghaly & Jackson, 2023). Upwards of 27% of children experience multiple episodes of otitis media (OM) that meet recurrent otitis media (ROM) diagnosis criteria (Pelton & Marchisio, 2023). Guided by the Iowa Model (Iowa Model Collaborative, 2017), the project’s purpose was to implement a multimodal intervention to decrease recurrent OM and repeat clinic visits. A comprehensive literature search of 5 databases yielded 16 sources ranging from levels I-IV (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023). Using the AGREE II and JBI Critical …

Visualizing The Dynamics Of Neuroevolution With Genetic Distance Projections, Evan Patterson May 2025

Visualizing The Dynamics Of Neuroevolution With Genetic Distance Projections, Evan Patterson

Theses

Evolutionary algorithms have shown substantial progress in recent years, especially in neural architecture search and neuroevolution applications. Despite their effectiveness, analyzing and understanding the evolutionary paths these algorithms traverse to reach solutions remains challenging. These algorithms often involve distributed computing strategies, which can include subpopulations or islands, and they explore massive or even unbounded search spaces in both continuous and non-continuous domains. Manually examining individual solutions to understand the evolutionary dynamics is often infeasible due to large population sizes, large genome sizes, and high generation counts. This work introduces a new methodology for visualizing neuroevolution population dynamics called genetic distance …
