Treatment-Seeking Behavior: A Quantitative Study Of Firefighters And Mental Health Literacy, Sarah Thompson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The mental health of firefighters is a pressing concern, especially given the increasing suicide rates within this demographic. This quantitative nonexperimental study examined the impact of mental health literacy on the intention of firefighters to seek help for personal or emotional issues, employing the Mental Health Literacy Scale and the General Help-Seeking Questionnaire. Key variables, including years of service, rank, and age, were analyzed for their influence on this relationship. Grounded in the conservation of resources theory, the study aimed to answer two primary research questions: the predictive relationship between mental health literacy and help-seeking behavior, and the role of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Background: Respiratory health outcomes such as asthma and wheezing represent a significant public health burden, with increasing prevalence globally. Prenatal exposures during critical periods of fetal development, including the use of acetaminophen, may influence these outcomes. Genetic predispositions and epigenetic mechanisms are hypothesized to mediate or modify these effects. This dissertation explores the relationships between prenatal acetaminophen exposure, genetic polymorphisms, epigenetic changes, and respiratory health outcomes across two generations. Methods: Data were derived from the Isle of Wight longitudinal birth cohort, which includes three generations. The studies utilized maternal acetaminophen use data, serum acetaminophen metabolite levels, genetic polymorphisms of glutathione …

A Complete Study Of Benjamin Bona Mahony Type Equations, Pamela Guerrero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this dissertation is to complete a study of Benjamin Bona Mahony (BBM) type equations. These are non-linear dispersive partial differential equations. The original BBM equation, also known as the regularized long-wave equation, was presented as an alternative to the Korteweg de Vries equation, and it has wide-ranging applications, including water waves and plasma physics. The original BBM equation is well studied. After an introduction of background materials and an explanation of notation, I begin by considering the modified BBM equation; here the nonlinear term is cubic. When the initial data are in the proper Sobolev space, the …

A (Loper) Bright Future?: How The Supreme Court Opened A Path For Drug Reform, Malich, Jack May 2025

A (Loper) Bright Future?: How The Supreme Court Opened A Path For Drug Reform, Malich, Jack

Santa Clara Law Review

We are witnessing a sweeping transformation of administrative law. The Supreme Court has taken aim at what it believes is a constitutional error: the power of the administrative state. All parts of the so-called “fourth branch of government” are undergoing shifts in the legal doctrines governing their structure. For those in favor of a strong administrative state, most of the Court’s new approach to agency action may represent a sinister effort to prevent the making of disfavored policy by the Executive. However, advocates of agency power would do well to remember that the administrative state can be oppressive. No agency …

Dnp Final Report: Improving Adherence With Cms Sep-1 Sepsis Bundle In The Emergency Department, Emmanuel Bernards May 2025

Dnp Final Report: Improving Adherence With Cms Sep-1 Sepsis Bundle In The Emergency Department, Emmanuel Bernards

DNP Final Reports

Adherence to the CMS SEP-1 Sepsis bundles is critical to sepsis management and leads to lower sepsis mortality, lower incidence of readmission, reduced length of hospital stay, and improved patient outcomes. This medical center has struggled to meet the required 71% adherence rate set by the Center for Medicaid and Medicare, representing the benchmark of acceptable care of sepsis patients. Therefore, the following PICOT question arises: among the hospitals’ ED physicians and nursing staff (P), how does a multimodal approach consisting of education, visual reminders, and audit and feedback (I) compared to a single approach (education) (C) affect adherence to …

Analysis Of Myositis Development In Adults And Children With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Yu Rim Park, Jamal Kriem May 2025

Analysis Of Myositis Development In Adults And Children With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Yu Rim Park, Jamal Kriem

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background/Objective Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disorder that can present with a wide range of clinical manifestations spanning multiple organ systems. Myositis in patients diagnosed with IBD is an uncommon presentation, and the pathophysiology in this population is not well studied. Given the lack of research surrounding the natural history of myositis in IBD patients, we decided to investigate the demographics and medication use that may potentially serve as predictors of symptom development. We hypothesized increased rates of myositis development in patients on TNF-alpha inhibitors given anecdotal evidence in clinical practice and literature review of several clinical vignettes …

Effects Of Surprisal And Prediction Uncertainty On Detailed And Gist Aspects Of Memory, Thanh Tan Nguyen May 2025

Effects Of Surprisal And Prediction Uncertainty On Detailed And Gist Aspects Of Memory, Thanh Tan Nguyen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Schemas guide comprehension and memory of everyday activities, yet theories differ on how schema‐unexpected or schema‐expected events affect memory. In this study, we compared predictions from the Schema‐Linked Interactions between Medial Prefrontal Cortex and Medial Temporal Lobe (SLIMM) model, which proposes a U‐shaped function for gist memory (both highly expected and highly unexpected events are well remembered) and a linear function for detailed memory, with those of the Schema Copy Plus Tag (SC+T) theory, which proposes a linear function for both gist and detailed memory. Participants read everyday activity narratives with events varying in surprisal, prediction uncertainty, and relevance to …

Parsing Heterogeneity In Depression, Kayla Hannon May 2025

Parsing Heterogeneity In Depression, Kayla Hannon

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Depression is a highly prevalent mental health disorder that often requires treatment. While current treatments are effective for a large portion of patients generally, the exact medication that works for any specific person is unclear, leading to large delays in symptom remittance if at all. This hurdle has motivated substantial efforts to identify markers of depression that might predict treatment outcomes. However, large sources of heterogeneity in depression have stymied progress on identifying robust and replicable neuroimaging markers. Parsing this heterogeneity is crucial but mired with challenges. My dissertation work has elucidated several key barriers in parsing the heterogeneity of …

Role Of The Small Intestinal Microbiota In The Pathogenesis Of Environmental Enteric Dysfunction In Undernourished Children And Mothers, Clara Kao May 2025

Role Of The Small Intestinal Microbiota In The Pathogenesis Of Environmental Enteric Dysfunction In Undernourished Children And Mothers, Clara Kao

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Undernutrition in women and its propagation in their children remains a major global health challenge. Worldwide, one in five children under five years of age manifests undernutrition as impaired linear growth, or stunting. Stunting, defined as having a length-for-age z-score (LAZ) <-2, is associated with poor developmental outcomes, including impaired neurodevelopment and immune responses. Furthermore, stunting and its long-term sequelae persist across generations, contributing to an intergenerational cycle of undernutrition. Existing nutritional interventions fail to substantially improve stunting, highlighting the need to (i) better understand other factors contributing to stunting and (ii) focus clinical efforts towards treating maternal undernutrition. Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a subclinical inflammatory enteropathy of the small intestine proposed to contribute to stunting. EED is diagnosed histologically by blunted intestinal villi, epithelial barrier disruption and an immunoinflammatory infiltrate in the lamina propria. However, the pathophysiology of EED remains poorly defined. Furthermore, the small intestinal microbiota remains understudied due to difficulties in sampling. Evidence that the small intestinal microbiota contributes to EED pathogenesis comes in part from our collaborative work with colleagues at icddr,b (the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) who oversaw the Bangladesh EED (BEED) study. In this study children, aged 12-18 months residing in an urban slum in the Mirpur district of Dhaka who failed a nutritional intervention for their stunting, underwent esophago-gastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to obtain duodenal mucosal biopsies, aspirates of duodenal luminal fluid and plasma samples. A set of 14 bacteria taxa (defined by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing) were identified in the duodenal microbiota of >80% of children with EED. Moreover, the absolute abundances of these ‘core taxa’ were positively correlated with duodenal mucosal and systemic inflammation in study participants and negatively correlated with linear growth. Our lab showed that introduction of a consortium of bacteria cultured from these duodenal aspirates, including these core taxa, produced small intestinal inflammation in young adult gnotobiotic, providing …

Quantifying Noise In Optical Redox Ratio Imaging, Evan Sharafuddin, Hong Hu, Janet Sorrells May 2025

Quantifying Noise In Optical Redox Ratio Imaging, Evan Sharafuddin, Hong Hu, Janet Sorrells

Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research

Characterizing cellular metabolism through noninvasive imaging of metabolic cofactors NAD(P)H and FAD has become a powerful diagnostic tool, with the Optical Redox Ratio (ORR) serving as a key quantitative metric. However, widespread adoption of ORR imaging is hindered by the lack of standardized image quality requirements. This study addresses that gap by analytically deriving expressions for the variance of ORR measurements as a function of photon shot noise and dark current contributions. Using statistical conditioning, we modeled the expected pixelwise ORR variance and verified the model through simulated image sets and experimental data. We observed that variance decreases with higher …

“Take This Job And Shove It”: How Black Women’S Fight For Economic Rights Informed Their Participation In The Broader Social Movements Of The Twentieth Century, Kyndle Diane Lee

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the vital role of Black women in the American labor movement during the twentieth century, emphasizing how their leadership and union participation were central to both labor organizing and the broader fight for human rights. Black women workers navigated and resisted the effects of racism, sexism, and class exploitation in a century marked by industrial expansion, economic upheaval, and major civil rights struggles. Far from passive participants, they emerged as key organizers, negotiators, and strategists in their communities, labor unions, and national movements. Additionally, their work extended beyond their demands for better wages and safer working conditions. …

Examining Loss Of Imprint In F1 Hybrid Female Mice Due To X Chromosome Epimutation And The Implications For Autism, Arianna H. Roach

Honors Scholar Theses

Sex biases are prevalent among various neurodevelopmental disorders, with males experiencing them at higher frequencies or severities than females. This male bias is poorly understood, and our lab aims to elucidate this mechanism using our model of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. Our lab identified the cluster of genes Xlr3b/4b/4c on the X chromosome that are imprinted in the female brain. Preliminary studies suggest that Xlr3 acts as a mediator molecule in our model. Xlr3 knockdown male mice exhibited significant meiocyte loss that can be attributed to Meiotic Sex Chromosome Inactivation. Their female offspring also displayed loss of imprinting of Xlr3 and …

Enhancing Communication For Individuals With Complex Communication Needs: The Critical Role Of Training And Evidence-Based Aac Strategies, Rachel H. Williams

Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education Faculty Publications

Communication is a basic human right, as affirmed by the National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities (NJC, 2024). For individuals with complex communication needs (CCN), special considerations must be taken into account to ensure equitable access to this right and must be supported through appropriate services, tools, and strategies. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems are essential for many individuals with CCN, enabling access to expressive and receptive language. However, successful AAC implementation requires well-trained educators, speech-language pathologists, and support staff who understand how to assess, model, and support communication effectively (Brady et al., …

I Will Not Accept This Rose: "The Bachelor(Ette)," Gender Stereotypes, And Self Perception, Rylie Vann

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Reality television is a cornerstone of modern-day TV programming, and typically features some element of competition, a makeover, or finding love. The Bachelor began airing in 2002, and the franchise that was built off the initial season continues to be a big name in romantically themed reality television. However, the show employs a variety of tactics during filming and while editing that presents a heteronormative view of contestants. The extent of this influence was explored using a mixed-method approach. A content analysis of several episodes from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette was conducted in order to determine how many instances …
