Behavioral Responses To The Medicare Part D Coverage Gap And Its Closure, Selene Urbatsch May 2025

Behavioral Responses To The Medicare Part D Coverage Gap And Its Closure, Selene Urbatsch

Theses and Dissertations

The author examines how exposure to the Medicare Part D coverage gap affects future prescription drug use and whether the closure of the gap under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) altered beneficiary behavior. Using 2007–2019 MEPS data, the analysis compares Part D enrollees to similarly aged, privately insured individuals, producing first-differences and difference-in-differences estimates. Before the ACA, exposure to the gap was associated with 4.9 fewer prescription fills relative to comparable non-Part D individuals. After the ACA, the effect fell to a reduction of 2.2 generic fills, with no significant decline in branded use. Sudden out-of-pocket cost increases prompted sharp …

The Economic Drivers Of Preferential Access, Kristie-Marie Sanchez May 2025

The Economic Drivers Of Preferential Access, Kristie-Marie Sanchez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how economic theory can explain differences in preferential access across products. Preferential access is the difference between the preferential tariff and the most favored nation (MFN) tariff. This research applies the theory from Bagwell and Staiger (1990) and the empirical findings from Bown and Crowley (2013) to tariff, import flow, import demand, and export supply elasticity data, where Chile is the reporting country. The two-way fixed effects linear regression estimates how changes in import growth, the volatility of import growth, and the inverse sum of import demand and export supply elasticities affect preferential access. The estimates indicate …

Deflecting Voyeurism: Elizabeth Keckley’S Indictment Of Capitalism And Rejection Of The Exploitative White Gaze, Laura Steel May 2025

Deflecting Voyeurism: Elizabeth Keckley’S Indictment Of Capitalism And Rejection Of The Exploitative White Gaze, Laura Steel

Theses and Dissertations

This paper analyzes the ex-slave narrative Behind the Scenes, or Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House by Elizabeth Keckley through a Marxist and Romantic lens as a means to explore the impact of capitalism on Keckley while enslaved, as well as post-slavery. Through the paper, the author argues that Keckley successfully deflects the white voyeuristic gaze by replacing her physical form with clothing that she creates, as a means to both indict capitalism and reclaim ownership over her body. Further, the paper argues that Keckley employs Romanticism to highlight the unnatural capitalist roots and subsequent …

As Above So Below, Robin Smith Fedock

Theses and Dissertations

As Above So Below is a short experimental documentary film that reveals an unexpected world of entanglements connecting life, death, and fungi in Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Fungi are nature’s decomposers, turning dead trees into soil so new trees can grow, for example. Mycorrhizal fungi perform acts of collaboration and mutualism, delivering water and nutrients to roots of plants through their underground networks of mycelium. As we struggle to find ways of living in and beyond this time of planetary crisis, rife with loneliness and grief, what can we learn from fungi and their entanglements? How can we move beyond dominant …

Theses and Dissertations

Coffee Bindings is a multi-media interactive installation weaving themes of history, memory, death, and spaces that no longer exist through the lens of coffee readings and a mixture of physical and digital media. By navigating ghost spaces (spaces/places that used to exist but don’t anymore), and looking at survival through three time periods, Coffee Bindings jumps through liminal time and space, navigating the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the ethnic cleansing and displacement of Armenians from Artsakh in 2020-2024, while also tying them to personal family history with the death of my father and the loss of the physical space of …

Geraldo De Barros’S Fotoformas: Towards The Construction Of New Forms Of Legibility, Jay Bravo May 2025

Geraldo De Barros’S Fotoformas: Towards The Construction Of New Forms Of Legibility, Jay Bravo

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the legibility and reception of Geraldo de Barros’s Fotoformas within Western art institutions, using MoMA’s 2021 Fotoclubismo exhibition as a case study. It argues that the integration of Brazilian modernist photography into canonical narratives often hinges on strategic affinities with Euro-American frameworks. Drawing on institutional critique, postcolonial theory, and the concept of Anthropophagy, the study explores how Fotoformas challenges conventional photographic discourse and reveals broader dynamics of artistic legitimacy and representation.

I Let The Ocean Hear My Song, Zachary Heske

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This chapbook manuscript focuses on themes of sexual identity and yearning. The sequence of poems follows a speaker who indulges in the delusion of being in a romantic relationship with someone they were once friends with. In the manuscript, the speaker must sort through his emotions and accept his truth to have closure from this friendship. The sequence encapsulates a variety of forms. One recurring form throughout the sequence is the alignment of text on the page to signify conversations between the speaker and his imagined lover. The speaker’s dialogue is aligned to the left, and the imagined lover’s dialogue …

“Yes I Said Yes I Will Yes”: Singular Female Perspectives In As I Lay Dying And Ulysses, Rowan I. Tully May 2025

“Yes I Said Yes I Will Yes”: Singular Female Perspectives In As I Lay Dying And Ulysses, Rowan I. Tully

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and James Joyce’s Ulysses utilize both multiple perspectives, but what they both share is a single chapter granted to a complex maternal figure. With Addie Bundren in As I Lay Dying, her chapter comes in the middle, and she quickly breaks down any notions the family had of her in the first half of the novel, altering the tone and complicating the family’s grief. Conversely, Molly Bloom’s singular chapter in Ulysses are the final words of a novel hundreds of pages in length. Through pure stream of consciousness, she shares the grossest parts …

Akhmed immediately takes her on as his own while Sonja is hesitant. As the novel progresses, Sonja and Akhmed each provide an even amount of time and effort into her care, though they approach it differently. Akhmed—Havaa’s neighbor and family friend—works together with …

Although still a tight-knit community of poets, Fine Print encourages casual attendance to both events and meetings by anybody who finds it intriguing. Through regular …

Microbial Community And Water Quality Assessment Of Crassostrea Virginica Habitats In Southeast Florida, Stacy Brown May 2025

Microbial Community And Water Quality Assessment Of Crassostrea Virginica Habitats In Southeast Florida, Stacy Brown

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are essential habitat-forming species that contribute significantly to coastal water quality due to their filter-feeding behavior. Unlike other coastal regions in the Gulf of Mexico and Northeastern United States, oysters are not commercially managed in Southeast Florida and as a result sparse data exists on locations of the Eastern oyster habitat. Similarly, the benefits of oyster reefs to water quality are also not fully documented in Southeast Florida. Although beneficial and often referred to as keystone habitat building species, populations of C. virginica are not currently listed as protected species so little work has …

Using Satellite Tracking And Stable Isotopes To Characterize The Movements, Core-Use Areas, And Distribution Of Loggerhead And Green Turtles Nesting In South Florida, Usa: Internesting, Foraging, And Migration, Glenn D. Goodwin

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The movements of animals in response to environmental variation influence the fitness of individuals and drive major ecological processes, while also varying their exposure level to anthropogenic risks. Understanding the movements and spatial distribution of imperiled species is critical for developing effective conservation strategies. This can be difficult for wide ranging and highly migratory species, such as sea turtles. Throughout their adult life stages, the females of most sea turtle species spend the majority of their time in their foraging areas for multiyear intervals between nesting periods. These foraging areas are typically widely dispersed and variable within nesting populations. To …

Extended gamma-ray emission around isolated pulsars at TeV energies, also known as TeV halos, have been found around a handful of middle-aged pulsars. The halos are significantly more extended than their pulsar wind nebulae but much smaller than the particle diffusion length in the interstellar medium. The origin of TeV halos is unknown. Interpretations invoke either local effects related to the environment of a pulsar or generic particle transport behaviors. The latter scenario predicts that TeV halos would be a universal phenomenon for all pulsars. We searched for extended gamma-ray emission around 36 isolated middle-aged pulsars identified by radio and …
