“Already My Heart Misgave Me”: Doomed Fantasy And Children In James Joyce’S “Araby” And William Faulkner’S “Barn Burning”, Kathleen E. Conner
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
While rarely put into conversation, William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” and James Joyce’s “Araby” have a remarkable amount to say to one another. These parallel portraits of childhood each follow a young boy, Sarty Snopes and a nameless narrator respectively, struggling to find emotional clarity within a repressive society. While far from either authors’ most blatant critique of Southern or Irish culture, both stories subtly weave in the confining forces of Catholicism, imperialism, patriarchy, and poverty. To cope with the drudgery and cruelty of their surroundings, the boys retreat into fantasies of love and heroism. These idealizations allow the boys to …
Preparing To Bridge The Deaf Math Gap: Exploring Preparation Materials For Asl Interpreters In Math Education, Taylor Victor
Preparing To Bridge The Deaf Math Gap: Exploring Preparation Materials For Asl Interpreters In Math Education, Taylor Victor
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The gap in performance between hearing students and their mainstreamed deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) peers who use ASL interpreters expands throughout various grade levels and is not a new issue, especially in mathematics. This delay in mathematical development has been prevalent for many decades, and it is still being determined at what level it begins and what the causes are. D/HH students' academic success is often connected to high-quality academic sign language interpreting (Jones, 2017). However, there are still many college-level American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting programs that are not focused on educational interpreting. This lack of focus …

Staff Education To Early Detection And Response To Patient Decline, Kein Gareth Rufino Pantaleon
Staff Education To Early Detection And Response To Patient Decline, Kein Gareth Rufino Pantaleon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This doctoral project implemented a staff education program to enhance early recognition and escalation of patient deterioration. Conducted at a 343-bed acute care hospital, the initiative addressed the ongoing problem of delayed detection and response to clinical decline, which often results in rapid response team activations and code blue events. Delays in intervention increase patient morbidity and mortality, despite many of these events being preventable through timely action. The project evaluated whether an interactive targeted education program could improve nursing staff’s knowledge, confidence, and willingness to activate escalation protocols, including Condition H and Code Help. Pre- and post-education surveys were …
Application Of Alexander Technique In The Practice And Performance Of The Sibelius Violin Concerto, Op. 47, Rebeca Rathlef Todd
Application Of Alexander Technique In The Practice And Performance Of The Sibelius Violin Concerto, Op. 47, Rebeca Rathlef Todd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Musicians often struggle with excessive tension, inefficient movement, and performance-related discomfort, which can hinder technical development and artistic expression. Alexander Technique (AT) has been widely recognized for improving coordination, reducing strain, and fostering a more mindful approach to performance. However, its integration into violin practice often lacks a systematic framework that students can apply without prior AT experience. This study investigates the development of a structured methodology for applying AT principles in the daily practice of college-level violin students, using Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, Op. 47 as a case study. I implemented weekly AT lessons with licensed instructor Eleni Vosniadou …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Preludios Colombianos is an audio recording album dedicated to the piano works of Colombian composers Adolfo Mejía Navarro and Guillermo Uribe Holguín, performed by pianist Natalia Vanegas Escobar. The album features Uribe Holguín’s Preludes op. 48 and op. 56 and Mejía’s Four Preludes, offering listeners a focused look at two important yet underrepresented voices in classical music. Despite the significance of these composers in the Colombian national repertoire, many of their pieces have never been professionally recorded, and some have no audio record whatsoever. This project responds to that need, providing accessible, high quality, and more performance interpretations of these …
Single Vesicle Surface Protein Profiling And Machine Learning - Assisted Dual Image Analysis For Breast Cancer Detection, Mitchell Lee Taylor
Single Vesicle Surface Protein Profiling And Machine Learning - Assisted Dual Image Analysis For Breast Cancer Detection, Mitchell Lee Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Single vesicle molecular profiling of cancer-associated EVs is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for cancer detection and monitoring. Mask and target dual imaging offers a straightforward method to quantify the fraction of molecularly targeted EVs in biofluids at the single vesicle level. However, accurate and efficient dual imaging analysis remains challenging due to interference from false signals in mask images and the need to process large volumes of clinical sample data. A fully automated dual imaging analysis method based on machine learning, integrated with dual imaging single-vesicle technology (DISVT), for breast cancer detection at various stages is presented here. …
Linking Neural And Physiological Indicators Of Turn-Taking: The Importance Of Live Engagement, Brandon Alexander Copping
Linking Neural And Physiological Indicators Of Turn-Taking: The Importance Of Live Engagement, Brandon Alexander Copping
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Introduction: Many turn-taking studies examine measures from temporal, neural, or respiratory domains separately as well as limit the turn-taking behaviors participants can engage in by dictating when and for how long they are allowed to speak. A multi-domain approach that does not restrict when participants are allowed to respond would be able to bridge these gaps. Objectives: Determine whether the presence of a live presenter elicits more ecologically valid response times in a question-answer paradigm than the use of pre-recorded audio. Also, determine whether participants begin executing speech motor plans upon recognition of answer-relevant information or upon detection of a …
Optimal Placement Of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Using Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm In An Electric Grid, Sravan Kumar Dumpeti
Optimal Placement Of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Using Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm In An Electric Grid, Sravan Kumar Dumpeti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The rapid adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) necessitates to optimize the grid through strategic placement of Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS). Conventional algorithms such as Greywolf Optimization Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization have been used for the placement of EVCS, but they have difficulties in dealing with dynamic and complex environments. With this background, this thesis proposes a Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (MAHA) for optimal placement of EVCS in the IEEE 9-bus, 57-bus, and 118-bus systems. The first approach uses a single objective function that minimizes transmission losses due to EV charging, while the second approach considers a multi-objective function …

Cumulative Lifespan Stress And Inflammation Are Associated With Black-White Racial Disparities In Mortality Among Americans, Isaiah Spears
Cumulative Lifespan Stress And Inflammation Are Associated With Black-White Racial Disparities In Mortality Among Americans, Isaiah Spears
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Black Americans disproportionately experience higher rates of health challenges and mortality compared to White Americans, yet the mechanisms underlying these disparities remain inadequately understood. Prominent theoretical models highlight stress and resulting allostatic load as putative mechanisms through which these Black-White racial disparities emerge; however, empirical data supporting such models with regard to mortality remains sparse. The current study examined the potential role of cumulative stress exposure across the life span and elevated levels of C-Reactive Protein, a biomarker of inflammation, in contributing to the longstanding increased mortality risk among Black relative to White Americans. Data were drawn from the Saint …

Examing The Role Of Complement Signaling In Viral Neuroinflammatory Responses, Marlene Kanmogne
Examing The Role Of Complement Signaling In Viral Neuroinflammatory Responses, Marlene Kanmogne
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The complement system is an ancient pathway that serves dual roles as a key regulator of neuroinflammation and a critical regulator of neural networks. Few studies have addressed how these two pathways may interact during infection of the central nervous system. While some components of complement are expressed in the healthy developing brain, complement component 3a receptor (C3aR) is a G protein coupled receptor that is expressed by astrocytes, microglia and infiltrating immune cells during inflammatory states. We previously found that C3aR is required for engulfment of synaptic material by activated microglia during neuroinvasive viral infection. Here, we used a …
First-Principles Studies Of Excited-State Properties In Large-Scale Systems, Du Li
First-Principles Studies Of Excited-State Properties In Large-Scale Systems, Du Li
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Density Functional Theory (DFT) is widely used as a powerful tool for studying the electronic structure of materials. However, due to the local or semilocal nature of exchange-correlation functionals, such as the local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation functional, DFT often underestimates the electronic band gap. Many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) within the GW approximation provides more accurate quasiparticle energies calculation by incorporating many-electron screening effects. Additionally, solving the Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) allows for a detailed analysis of excitonic effects in optical spectra. Despite their accuracy, GW-BSE calculations are computationally expensive, particularly for large-scale systems such as defects and substrate-supported …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the agropastoral practices in the Eurasian landmass between the 3rd millennium BCE to 1st millennium CE, focusing on characterizing how communities living in mountainous Inner Asia incorporated plant cultivation into their mobile agropastoralist lifestyle. I examine macrobotanical remains from key archaeological sites along the routes of the trans-Eurasian exchange of domesticated plants and animals and various technologies during the Bronze and Iron Ages. These sites include Chap, Kyrgyzstan, Tasbas, Kazakhstan, and Dingdong, Piyang, Jiweng, Kaerdong, and Bangga, located in Tibet. I use stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values of archaeological plant remains and macrobotanical assemblages to assess …
Mutant-Specific Analysis Of Tumor Cell Heterogeneity In Glioblastoma, Patrick Desouza
Mutant-Specific Analysis Of Tumor Cell Heterogeneity In Glioblastoma, Patrick Desouza
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive brain tumor driven by the interplay between tumor cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic heterogeneity, enabling rapid evolution. To investigate how canonical GBM mutations promote functional plasticity, we developed an isogenic human neural stem cell (NSC) model of GBM by sequential addition of TERT promoter, TP53, and PDGFRA point mutations. TP53 loss-of-function increased TERT expression during serial mutagenesis, but only triple mutant NSCs reliably formed lethal brain tumors in vivo that recapitulate GBM. Tumor cell evolution triggered stress-related metabolic changes and transitioned toward a neuronal progenitor network driven by transcription factor INSM1. INSM1 is highly expressed in human …

Oriented Matroid Circuit Polytopes, Jodi Mcwhirter
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Matroids give rise to several natural constructions of polytopes. Inspired by this, we examine polytopes that arise from the signed circuits of an oriented matroid. We give the dimensions of these polytopes arising from graphical oriented matroids and their duals. Moreover, we consider polytopes constructed from cocircuits of oriented matroids generated by the positive roots in any type A root system. We give an explicit description of their face structure and determine the Ehrhart series. We also study an action of the symmetric group on these polytopes, giving a full description the subpolytopes fixed by each permutation. These type A …
Mechanisms Of Protective Humoral Immunity And Pathogenesis In Alphavirus Infection, Natasha Monir Kafai
Mechanisms Of Protective Humoral Immunity And Pathogenesis In Alphavirus Infection, Natasha Monir Kafai
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Alphaviruses are enveloped, mosquito-transmitted, positive-sense RNA viruses of the Togaviridae family classified into Old and New World groups based on endemic regions and human disease characteristics. Old World alphaviruses, including chikungunya virus preferentially cause arthritogenic disease, whereas New World viruses like Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), and Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) can cause neurological disease. Since the 1920s, VEEV has been responsible for major periodic outbreaks affecting hundreds of thousands of humans and equines in South and Central America. Expansion of mosquito vectors raises concern for possible VEEV reemergence. In addition, VEEV is a …

Noninvasive Assessment Of The Tumor Using Cfdna, Irfan Alahi
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Next-generation high-throughput sequencing, which is increasingly generating vast amounts of genomic data, offers opportunities for a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of cancer and, hence, better patient care. However, the inherently complex and heterogeneous nature of cancer and the significant challenges in the generated data demand advanced data-driven frameworks to decode the molecular underpinnings of cancer. Moreover, the undeniable need for non-invasive approaches presents additional technical challenges in this domain. This dissertation proposes novel frameworks addressing three key challenges in computational oncology. The first study of this dissertation develops a data-driven algorithm to identify stemness signatures in metastatic castration-resistant …
