Using Hip Hop Pedagogy To Bridge The Culture Of Black Children Identified With Behavioral Disorders In The Curriculum, Monique Matute-Chavarria, Pricella Morris, Monica R. Brown

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

Black and other minoritized children have listened to hip hop in the streets, in clubs, in basements, and anywhere else that they could create a space to enjoy this art form. However, hip hop has not always been welcomed in school spaces because of the lyrical content. Despite the objections to hip hop (specifically rap), minoritized children often look to it as representative of who they are and the communities they come from. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the use of hip hop strategies in the schools, utilizing its pillars (i.e., rap, DJing, breakdancing, graffiti art, and knowledge of …

Ábreme La Puerta Y Entraré: Utilizing Hip Hop Pedagogy To Build Community For English Learners With Disabilities, Ebony Nicole Perez, Georgina Rivera-Singletary

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

English Language Learners (ELL) with disabilities face complex educational experiences due to their limited English-speaking ability, coupled with their unique learning challenges. Often, they are viewed from a deficit rather than an asset perspective, leading them to feelings of isolation and marginalization. Providing opportunities to engage in transformative learning experiences, ELL students with disabilities can experience a sense of belonging and empowerment in educational endeavors. Hip-hop can offer dynamic opportunities for ELL students with disabilities by creating an inclusive, affirming space that validates diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Through Hip-hop cyphers, rap battles, and collaborative songwriting, students can grasp new …

Flows That Teach: Multimodal Hip-Hop Pedagogy For Equity In Special Education, Camille O'Quin, Sara Jozwik Aug 2026

Flows That Teach: Multimodal Hip-Hop Pedagogy For Equity In Special Education, Camille O'Quin, Sara Jozwik

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

Hip-Hop can be more than a soundtrack played at home, it can be a bridge between culture, language, and learning at school. This article shows how Hip-Hop pedagogy, translanguaging, and code-meshing can support students with disabilities, especially those who speak African American Vernacular English (AAVE), in the classroom setting. Grounded in culturally relevant pedagogy and translanguaging theory, the approach uses rhythm, storytelling, and performance to build narrative fluency, language awareness, and confidence. Examples include students drafting rap verses about personal experiences, holding structured cypher circles to practice turn-taking and self-expression, and blending AAVE with Mainstream American English in writing for …

Focus Daily: Jase Special Issue On Hip-Hop, Disability, And The Continuing Evolution Of Arts-Based Pedagogy In Special Education (Side B), Jonte C. Taylor

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

Hip-hop has long served as an educational tradition, emerging from the Bronx as a cultural response to systemic inequities that fostered identity, critical consciousness, creativity, and community through its core elements of emceeing, DJing, breaking, graffiti, and knowledge of self. In this second special hip-hop issue of the Journal of the Arts in Special Education (JASE) and building on the initial 2025 JASE special issue, this collection advances hip-hop pedagogy beyond an engagement strategy by positioning it as a culturally inclusive framework that supports academic achievement, identity affirmation, and meaningful participation for students with disabilities. The contributing scholars explore how …

Developing Flow Theory For Black Girl Genius: A Conceptual Framework Grounded In Discrit, Endarkened Feminist Epistemology, And Hip-Hop Pedagogy, Keishana L. Barnes, William C. Hunter

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

Twice exceptional Black girls, those who are both intellectually gifted and identified with a disability, navigate classrooms shaped by racism, ableism, and sexism. These overlapping systems often render their brilliance illegible, leading to misidentification, exclusion, and under-support in both gifted and special education. This conceptual essay introduces Flow Theory for Black Girl Genius, a liberatory framework that considers Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit), Endarkened Feminist Epistemology, and Hip-Hop Pedagogy. DisCrit helps uncover the structural barriers that marginalize students at the intersection of race and disability. Endarkened Feminist Epistemology centers ancestral, embodied, and spiritual ways of knowing rooted in Black …

Ensemble Learning Framework For Predicting Close Proximity Tire–Pavement Noise On Expressways, Woo Young Cho, Jin Hwan Kim, Guk Gon Song, Kyungnam Kim, Youngguk Seo

Faculty Articles

Traffic noise is a critical public health concern affecting millions of highway users and adjacent residents worldwide. In response, many transportation agencies have adopted functional surface materials to reduce noise at the source on pavement, but assessing their effectiveness remains expensive and logistically challenging. Close Proximity (CPX) testing quantifies tire-pavement noise but requires specialized equipment costing $50,000-$126,000 and is limited to existing pavement, preventing proactive noise assessment during pavement design. This study develops machine learning models to predict CPX noise levels from readily available pavement characteristics, eliminating the need for costly tests during design and planning phases. To train and …

Impact Of Debriefing Methods On Psychological Outcomes In End-Of-Life Simulation, Jennifer A. Wentzel, Julie Steele, Desireé Hensel

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction: Nursing students do not feel adequately prepared to care for patients at the end of life (EOL) (Yoong et al., 2023). Current EOL education focuses on students’ learning outcomes instead of their psychological needs (Harder & Harwood, 2019). This is the first study to compare the impact of debriefing methods on psychological outcomes in EOL nursing education.

Purpose: Guided by the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory, this study examined the impact of the Trauma-informed, Psychologically Safe (TiPS) debriefing method on coping with death, attitudes toward care of the dying, and debriefing experience in undergraduate …

Data Centers As Engines Of Corporate Tax Base Restructuring, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Domenico Imparato, Karen Sam Aug 2026

Data Centers As Engines Of Corporate Tax Base Restructuring, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Domenico Imparato, Karen Sam

Articles

Globalization has eroded the corporate income tax by undermining both source-and residence-based taxation. Before the 1980s, large capital-exporting countries could impose relatively high tax rates on multinationals and extend taxation to low-taxed foreign income earned through controlled foreign corporations, as exemplified by the U.S. adoption of subpart F in the Revenue Act of 1962. That regime supported corporate tax revenues that reached roughly 25 percent of total U.S. receipts in the mid-20th century.

Globalization changed that equilibrium. Multinational corporations gained the ability to arbitrage national tax systems by relocating and reporting profits in low-tax jurisdictions. Active income largely escaped source …

Stochastic Inverse Problems In Stochastic Elliptic And Parabolic Pdes, Zi-Jia Gong Aug 2026

Stochastic Inverse Problems In Stochastic Elliptic And Parabolic Pdes, Zi-Jia Gong

Theses

This dissertation presents a computational framework for solving stochastic inverse problems in partial differential equations (PDEs) with random data. The objective is to recover unknown random coefficients in parabolic and elliptic diffusion equations, as well as nearly incompressible linear elasticity models. To achieve this, optimization-based approaches are used to minimize regularized Energy Least Squares (ELS) and Output Least Squares (OLS) objective functionals. Both direct and adjoint methods are used to estimate the gradient and Hessian of the objective functionals with respect to the coefficients. To avoid the expensive computation of the full Hessian matrix, the Newton-CG-like method is also adopted, …

Education And Inequality:: Shaping Conflict And Peace In Broken Socio-Economic Structures, Anna Zherdeva, Daniel Kamphambale, Lucía Morales

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This study engages in a critical literature review that offers insights into systemic and structural problems that immigrants face. Being forced, in many cases, to flee from their countries of origin, migrants face many challenges due to a lack of clear educational pathways, cultural integration and social lifts within the world's most advanced countries. For instance, migrants often experience labour-market resistance, as evidenced by consistent, stagnant rates of advancement into higher positions in their host countries and by their limited integration into communities and society. An additional problem is that segregation by country of origin matters significantly, as migrants face …

Retroverse: Enhancing Fashion Shopping Experience Through Augmented Reality, Fanghao Wang Aug 2026

Retroverse: Enhancing Fashion Shopping Experience Through Augmented Reality, Fanghao Wang

Theses

RetroVerse is a conceptual augmented reality (AR) application that reimagines the vintage fashion shopping experience by addressing the information gaps that often make secondhand purchasing uncertain and inefficient. As the resale market continues to grow, consumers frequently struggle to identify garments, verify authenticity, evaluate condition, compare prices, and determine fit, requiring them to rely on multiple platforms and personal knowledge before making a purchase. To address these challenges, RetroVerse integrates augmented reality, image recognition, and contextual product information into a unified shopping experience. Through video and live garment scanning, users can access brand history, manufacturing information, condition assessments, marketplace price …

Sex-Aware Causal Inference Assessment Of The Immune System In Complex Neurodegenerative Diseases, Frida Lona-Durazo, Ross P Byrne, Marc-Olivier Pilon, Michael D Greicius, Marie-Pierre Dubé, Michael E Belloy, Russell L Mclaughlin, Sarah A Gagliano Taliun

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Sex differences, in terms of prevalence, symptoms and disease progression, are established in the aetiology of complex neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, but the underlying biology driving these differences remains poorly understood. There is emerging evidence from genetic and functional analyses affirming the role of the immune system in such diseases, but a thorough assessment of sex differences in the link between the immune system and neurodegenerative diseases remains lacking. Here, we applied a robust causal inference approach, two-sample Mendelian randomization, to evaluate the causal effect of immune-related protein levels on three neurodegenerative diseases …

Nextlongiso: A Comprehensive Nextflow Pipeline For Multi-Dimensional Long-Read Rna-Seq Analysis, Jiang Tan, Yuqing Wu, Yidan Sun

2020-Current year OA Pubs

SUMMARY: Long-read RNA sequencing technologies, including Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT), enable direct characterization of full-length transcripts and transcriptome complexity. However, analysis of long-read RNA-seq data remains fragmented across multiple tools, limiting the ability to obtain a unified view of transcript structure, expression, and regulatory variation in long-read transcriptomes. We present NextLongIso, a scalable and reproducible Nextflow pipeline that enables coordinated analysis of multiple layers of transcript regulation. Rather than focusing solely on transcript reconstruction, NextLongIso integrates transcript discovery with downstream regulatory analyses to jointly characterize alternative splicing, isoform switching, transcript boundary dynamics (including alternative promoters and …

Quality Improvement Project: Advancing Personalized Depression Care In Outpatient Psychiatry, Jillian K. Benoit Aug 2026

Quality Improvement Project: Advancing Personalized Depression Care In Outpatient Psychiatry, Jillian K. Benoit

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet inconsistent use of evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies contributes to gaps in the quality of psychiatric care. A needs assessment at a community outpatient psychiatric clinic identified inconsistent documentation of measurement-based care (MBC), shared decision-making (SDM), and patient education during depression treatment. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate whether implementation of MBC and SDM improved depression treatment documentation among psychiatric providers over a 4-week period. Guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and implemented using the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice as the implementation framework, this quantitative one-group pretest-posttest …

Quality Improvement Project Simulating Ethics: Improving Ethical Decision-Making In Nursing Undergraduates Through Simulation And Faculty Training, Shannon Brown Aug 2026

Quality Improvement Project Simulating Ethics: Improving Ethical Decision-Making In Nursing Undergraduates Through Simulation And Faculty Training, Shannon Brown

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Nursing faculty often report limited confidence in teaching ethical principles, despite the essential role ethics plays in preparing students for complex clinical decision-making. This quantitative, quasi-experimental pre/post quality improvement project evaluated whether a structured ethics education module incorporating simulation could impact faculty confidence in teaching ethical principles. Guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and the Jeffries Simulation Framework, the project examined how organizational readiness for change and structured simulation design influence faculty development outcomes. Nursing faculty in a baccalaureate program participated in a single simulation-enhanced ethics session. Data were collected through anonymous pre/post Qualtrics surveys, and faculty confidence was measured using …

Hypothermia Management In Adult Trauma Patients: Enhancing Nursing Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In The Emergency Department, Shannon M. Rapert

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Trauma-induced hypothermia is a significant, preventable condition that contributes to increased mortality. Evidence suggests that inconsistent recognition and management of hypothermia persist in the emergency department (ED), highlighting the need to strengthen ED nurses’ knowledge and self-efficacy in evidence-based warming strategies. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on ED nurses’ knowledge and self-efficacy in managing trauma-induced hypothermia. Guided by the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice, the ADKAR Change Model, and the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, this quantitative, quasi-experimental, pretest–posttest project evaluated the effect of an instructor-led educational intervention in ED nurses at …
