Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Background
Surgeons provide up to 10% of total opioid prescriptions across all specialties, and more than one-third of surgeon-prescribed medications are opioids. Patient-reported opioid consumption and risk of persistent opioid use beyond the postoperative recovery period correlate with the initial opioid quantity prescribed at discharge. Interventions to reduce postoperative opioid prescribing have demonstrated no adverse effects on pain control or increased need for prescription refill; however, in the absence of standardized prescription protocols, opioid prescribing practices vary widely.
Objective
The study objective is to identify the opioid prescribing model that provides the lowest oral morphine equivalents (OME) volume prescribed at …

Assessing Community Attitudes Towards Homelessness And Services, Sarah Makar, Chris Runhaar, Dorothy Wallis
Utah Conference on Community Engagement
A collaborative, community-engaged research project was done to better understand Utah communities' attitudes and beliefs towards homelessness and evaluate for needed services for homeless individuals across Cache, Carbon, Utah, and Uintah counties. Through comprehensive data collection and analysis, this project will help identify community perceptions, challenges, and gaps in services, enabling providers to better tailor their efforts to meet the unique needs of homeless individuals within these counties. Ultimately, the research will foster more informed, responsive, and compassionate support systems for homeless populations across these diverse regions.

Laying The Groundwork: Building Long-Term Community Partnerships Across A Shared Curriculum, Juliana Chow, Eric Robertson, Kate Magargal
Utah Conference on Community Engagement
Maintaining long-term community partnerships is a major challenge for community-engaged classrooms. This poster presents a community-engaged learning (CEL) program template for a project shared between multiple courses and instructors, demonstrating how shared resources, skill sets, relationships, and coordination could result in a long-term community partnership linked to multiple community networks. It shows how 3 courses at the Honors College of the University of Utah can weave together learning objectives and cooperative planning for a course module focused on the Native Plants Program, part of the U of U Climate Action Plan.

Enhancing Management Of Hospitalized Patients With Opioid Withdrawal, Christine Aliory
Enhancing Management Of Hospitalized Patients With Opioid Withdrawal, Christine Aliory
Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers
Opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts over 1.2 million people in the United States. This population suffers from multiple comorbidities which can result in the need for hospitalization. Managing opioid withdrawal in hospitalized patients is challenging. Assessment tools like the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) help healthcare providers determine appropriate interventions to alleviate withdrawal symptoms for these patients. This quality improvement project aimed to decrease the number of incidents of violent behaviors and/or patients leaving the hospital against medical advice (AMA) during opioid withdrawal and enhance nurses’ ability to perform the COWS assessment. Organizational data from a 402-bed acute care hospital …
Toward A Global Consensus On The "S" In Esg: Strengthening Human Rights And Corporate Accountability Through Global Governance, Emma O'Connor
Toward A Global Consensus On The "S" In Esg: Strengthening Human Rights And Corporate Accountability Through Global Governance, Emma O'Connor
Pace International Law Review
This paper argues that the international community, led by the United Nations, must develop a coherent global framework for the “S” in Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) to strengthen corporate accountability and human rights protections. While environmental metrics in ESG have gained global traction, the social pillar remains fragmented, inconsistently defined, and weakly enforced, opening the door to impact washing, where companies misrepresent or exaggerate their positive social impact. Drawing from international, regional, and domestic case studies, this paper illustrates how this incoherence leads to economic, ethical, and operational harms for businesses and the global community. It argues that public governance …

Human Rights Denied: Forced Evictions And Housing Injustice In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Francesco Seatzu
Pace International Law Review
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) grapples with a pervasive and alarming phenomenon of forced evictions orchestrated by multinational corporations operating within its cobalt and copper mining sites. This comprehensive inquiry, undertaken collaboratively by Amnesty International and the DRC-based Initiative for Good Governance and Human Rights, meticulously scrutinizes the multifaceted human rights implications emanating from four mining projects situated in the Kolwezi region of the DRC. The investigative report documents a troubling pattern of systematic disregard for the fundamental rights and dignity of affected populations, compounded by a stark failure on the part of mining operators to adhere to extant …
Forced Adoptions Of Ukrainian Children From An International Human Rights And Humanitarian Law Perspective, Ines Gillich
Forced Adoptions Of Ukrainian Children From An International Human Rights And Humanitarian Law Perspective, Ines Gillich
Pace International Law Review
The article analyzes the legality of the Russian practice of forced adoptions of Ukrainian children from an international human rights and humanitarian law perspective. It argues that while the relocation of children from conflict zones to safe areas is generally lawful under international law, these measures must only be temporary, and persons abducted must be returned as soon as possible. This article also argues that human rights obligations must be read in the light of international humanitarian law, which is the lex specialis applicable in armed conflicts. The article concludes that any permanent measures against the will of the children …
Puerto Rico's Coast: Preservation Through Positive Obligations On Property Owners And The State In The Context Of Climate Change, Jaime Villeta-Garcia
Puerto Rico's Coast: Preservation Through Positive Obligations On Property Owners And The State In The Context Of Climate Change, Jaime Villeta-Garcia
Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy
The rise in sea level, the obvious rampant coastal erosion and the uncertain future due to climate change urge the need to rethink the coast, through property and administrative law. The security of life, property and the fair and orderly use of the ultra-valuable resources that is the coast depend on a new concept for properties in the coastal zone and its effective execution by a conscious and responsible State. Centered on the community of Ocean Park in San Juan, Puerto Rico, it’s no longer a question of whether coastal property rights can contribute to safeguarding the coast, but rather …

La Diglossie Et L’Enseignement De La Langue Amazighe Au Maroc, Abdelaziz Yannous, Fatima Agrou
Journal of Amazigh Studies
Amazigh Lexical Substrate In Tunisian Derja: An Outcome Of Linguistic Contact On Youtube And Facebook, Soubeika Bahri
Amazigh Lexical Substrate In Tunisian Derja: An Outcome Of Linguistic Contact On Youtube And Facebook, Soubeika Bahri
Journal of Amazigh Studies
Despite the extensive discussion of the structural and lexical impact of Tamazight on North African spoken varieties in Morocco, Algeria, and Libya (Berkai 4-14; Souag 2018, 192-200; Faizi 29-39; Bensoukas and Boudlal 179-21; Zellou 1-13), little is known about the linguistic contact outcome between the Tunisian spoken variety (henceforth, Ettounsi or Tunisian Derja) and Tamazight. In this article, we present and analyze Amazigh linguistic substrate examples in the lexicon of Ettounsi. Contact-induced change (Lafkioui 51-93; Thomason 339-46; Heine and Kuteva, 529-72) and language contact on YouTube (Garley, 77-106), along with the method of computer-mediated discourse (Androutsopoulos, 419-438), offer …

Enjeux De Contacts De Langues Et D’Oralitures Dans Les Noms D’Ogresse Dans La Kabylie Des Babors, Massinissa Garaoun
Journal of Amazigh Studies

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla
Journal of Amazigh Studies
My contribution will focus on multilingualism and multimedia in the ‘Amazigh literary and cinematographic space’ (Merolla De l’art, “Amazigh/Berber Literature”). Examining this notion coined in the 1990’s (Merolla “Gender and Community”) allows us to reflect on ongoing debates regarding North African literatures in postcolonial contexts. It also helps to see that Amazigh/Berber literature solely defined as Amazigh-language production tends to isolate works and performances that engage with multiple languages and literary traditions, cultural intersections, and hybridization in North Africa and its diasporas. The discussion is contextualized within the historical development of what is sometimes referred to as the “North …
Beyond The Binary: Amazigh Ethnicity And Transformational Resistance, Nour Sidhoum
Beyond The Binary: Amazigh Ethnicity And Transformational Resistance, Nour Sidhoum
Journal of Amazigh Studies
This article explores Amazigh activism in Algeria, focusing on the role of language, memory, and political mobilisation in reshaping national identity. It critically examines the reductive Arab/Berber binary, arguing that such oppositions, rooted in French colonial logic, provide the vocabulary through which Amazigh identity claims are confined within minority paradigms. The aim is to reconceptualise Amazigh ethnic identity as a form of transformational resistance that challenges dominant power structures rather than merely seeking accommodation within them. Drawing on a diverse range of primary and secondary sources—including memoirs of key figures in Algerian nationalism such as Hocine Aït Ahmed and Sadek …

Engaging Youth In Community Problem Solving Through Community Partnerships, Kim Hales, Catherine Jurado, Mercedis Zismer
Utah Conference on Community Engagement
This panel discussion will present a community-engaged project in which four community partners work with youth in the context of a USU ENG 1010 or USU ENG 2010 writing assignment. This assignement asks students to identify a problem in their community by which they are directly impacted. The student then works with the community partner to document the problem and to brainstorm possible solutions to the issue. The panel will invite audience members to share their experiences with similarly designed assignments and to offer input, critique, and suggestions. Audience members will also be invited to ask questions to the panel …
