Mental Health And Law: How Can Attorneys Improve Their Wellbeing?, Matthew P. Ruble

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Mental health is a concern for attorneys that affects elements such as well-being and performance. Poor mental health results in various risky behaviors such as substance abuse, depression, stress, vicarious trauma symptoms, and other issues. The legal profession requires tremendous commitment to the discipline’s work, and poor mental health prevents attorneys from achieving this outcome. Much research about the nature of mental health and law focuses on data prior to or during COVID-19. Literature is analyzed to provide a framework about the current knowledge of mental health in the legal profession. The literature discusses research studies about depression, secondary trauma, …

Combining N-Mixture And Occupancy Analysis Offers A More Complete Picture Of Carnivore Habitat Use In Northeastern Türkiye, J. David Blount, Austin M. Green, Mark Chynoweth, Emrah Çoban, Josip Kusak, Çağan H. Şekercioğlu

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Occupancy and N-mixture analyses have been successfully used to understand habitat use in various species. However, since these methods fundamentally answer different questions about wildlife distribution, the results from each modelling approach may provide different insights into species’ habitat use. In this study, we leveraged data from a long-term camera trapping study in northeastern Türkiye to compare the results from occupancy and N-mixture analyses, with the main objective of understanding how the modelling approach used can influence our knowledge of species’ habitat use. Specifically, we compared the habitat use preferences from N-mixture and occupancy analyses for three carnivore species with …

Using a quasi-experimental pre-post design, the principal investigator …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Education Policies To Reduce Racial And Gender Achievement Gaps, Lisa Mondett Davis May 2025

Teachers' Perceptions Of Education Policies To Reduce Racial And Gender Achievement Gaps, Lisa Mondett Davis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teachers possess valuable knowledge about classroom experiences that remains untapped in educational policymaking, particularly concerning persistent achievement gaps for Black female students, which have resulted in less effective student academic growth outcomes when compared to White female peers. Although prior research has indicated the implementation of targeted education policies, few studies have explored how excluding educators’ insights about these policies have caused the achievement gap to widen based on race and gender comparisons. Grounded in Black feminist theory, the purpose of this qualitative intrinsic case study was to explore Black female teachers’ perspectives of how education policies influence the achievement …

Continuity Of Novice Middle School Teachers In An Urban School District, Andrea Torres Williams May 2025

Continuity Of Novice Middle School Teachers In An Urban School District, Andrea Torres Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Extensive research suggests that effective and meaningful teacher preparation programs can help reduce novice teacher attrition. The problem addressed in this study was the high middle school teacher turnover in an urban school district (USD, a pseudonym) in Georgia, despite the implementation of coaching programs for novice teachers. Guided by Yerkes and Dodson’s challenge-hindrance model, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore novice middle school teachers’ perceptions on the support received, the challenges encountered in their first year, and the usefulness of mentoring, professional development, and instructional coaching received at USD. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 12 …

The Moderating Effect Of Political Ideology On The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Covid-19-Related Anxiety And Stress, Sarah Boomhower May 2025

The Moderating Effect Of Political Ideology On The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Covid-19-Related Anxiety And Stress, Sarah Boomhower

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic created a mental health crisis within the United States. Previous research examining locus of control and mental health issues during the pandemic revealed that individuals with an external locus of control exhibited increased mental health symptoms. Research also found that political attitudes played a role regarding COVID-19 with liberal-leaning individuals and Democrats reporting higher levels of emotional distress during the pandemic. The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental, correlational study was to determine the extent to which political ideology moderates the relationship between locus of control and COVID-19-related anxiety and stress. Locus of control was the theoretical foundation …

Psychologists’ Competency And Training Regarding Treating Transgender And Non-Conforming Youth With Gender Dysphoria, Amydth Chumacero

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is limited evidence-based research on required competency, training, assessment, and treatment practices for psychologists who treat transgender and non-conforming (TGNC) youth with gender dysphoria. Eleven licensed psychologists with at least 5 years of experience treating TGNC youth were recruited through social media and snowball recruiting to participate in this qualitative Delphi study. Using multicultural competency theory as a guide, these experts were asked to develop a consensus regarding the minimum competencies and training to treat TGNC youth, as well as what they thought the standards should be for assessment and treatment. Data were collected in three rounds of online …

Experiences Of Low-Risk, Low-Need Participants In A Gender-Neutral And Inclusive Domestic And Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Program, Kenneth W. Robison May 2025

Experiences Of Low-Risk, Low-Need Participants In A Gender-Neutral And Inclusive Domestic And Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Program, Kenneth W. Robison

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Traditional batterer intervention programs often prioritize male-perpetrator-female-victim models, thereby overlooking diverse relationship contexts and marginalized populations. Understanding participants’ experiences is essential for researchers, policymakers, counselor educators, and practitioners to develop alternatives to one-size-fits-all gender- specific strategies, which aligns with the call for more robust evidence-based practices. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative study, guided by van Manen’s framework, was to explore the lived experiences of low-risk, low-need participants who completed a gender-neutral and inclusive domestic and intimate partner violence intervention program. The research answered what essential themes emerged from the participants’ lived experiences. Data were collected from (n=8) participants …

Exploring The Relationship Of Program Type On Multilingual Learners Students’ English Growth And Promotion In Secondary School, Simone M. Wilkinson May 2025

Exploring The Relationship Of Program Type On Multilingual Learners Students’ English Growth And Promotion In Secondary School, Simone M. Wilkinson

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study explores the relationships between tenure as Multilingual Learners (MLs), English proficiency, academic performance, and promotion among middle and high school students. This study is grounded in Bourdieu’s (1967, 2018) theory, which emphasizes that schools perpetuate cultural norms by limiting ML’s language access and post-secondary success. Also informed by Krashen’s (1982, 1985, 2003) theory of Input Hypothesis, this study investigates how meaningful interaction is key for language learning. The primary research questions explore: (1) Is there a relationship between students’ tenure as a ML, English proficiency, and promotion through secondary school? (2) Is the EL program type for MLs …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Co-Located Floating Solar And Offshore Wind, Danela Sadikaj, Meghann Smith May 2025

Life Cycle Assessment Of Co-Located Floating Solar And Offshore Wind, Danela Sadikaj, Meghann Smith

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Is combining floating solar and offshore wind platforms feasible for increasing energy capacity while displacing the environmental impacts that each of these systems has independently? In recent years offshore wind has become a very popular option to decarbonize the energy sector without overtaking valuable land. While floating solar is not a new technology, using solar in a marine environment is still in an experimental phase. This research proposes a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model of co-located solar technology within the proposed offshore wind farms near New Jersey’s coastline. While both technologies themselves are zero-emission while operating, they each require a …

Evaluation Of Topographic Effect Parameterizations In Weather Research And Forecasting Model Over Complex Mountainous Terrain In Wildfire-Prone Regions, Yonghan Jo, Seung Hee Kim, Yungon Lee, Changki Kim, Jinkyu Hong, Junhong Lee, Keunchang Jang

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

Recent trends of intense forest fires in the Korean Peninsula have increased concerns about more extreme burning in the future under a warming climate. Accurate and reliable fire weather information has become more critical to reduce the risk of forest-related disasters over complex terrain. In this study, two parameterizations reflecting complex topographic effects were implemented in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The model performance was evaluated over the mountainous region in Gangwon-do, South Korea’s most significant forest area. The simulation results of the wildfire case in 2019 show that subgrid-scale orographic parameterization considerably improves model performance regarding wind …

Explainable Artificial Intelligence In Deep Learning-Based Solar Storm Predictions, Adam O. Rawashdeh, Jason T.L. Wang, Katherine G. Herbert May 2025

Explainable Artificial Intelligence In Deep Learning-Based Solar Storm Predictions, Adam O. Rawashdeh, Jason T.L. Wang, Katherine G. Herbert

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A deep learning model is often considered a black-box model, as its internal workings tend to be opaque to the user. Because of the lack of transparency, it is challenging to understand the reasoning behind the model’s predictions. Here, we present an approach to making a deep learning-based solar storm prediction model interpretable, where solar storms include solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This deep learning model, built based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network with an attention mechanism, aims to predict whether an active region (AR) on the Sun’s surface that produces a flare within 24 hours …

Patterns In Tropical Cyclone Intensity And Frequency Since 1960, Ramie E. Thompson

Student Scholarship

Tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes or typhoons, are defined as organized storm systems that form in the warm waters around the equator (NOAA, 2024). This happens due to the combination of warm waters, light winds, and preexisting weather conditions. In the last 50 years, tropical cyclones have accounted for approximately 800,000 deaths and an economic loss of $1.4 trillion USD due to their resulting damages (WMO, 2024). Research in this field includes studies that encompass a variety of time scales including from 85 to 150 years on a global or regional level and studies that focus on more recent …

Serving Minority Women Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Consuelo Valentina Riso May 2025

Serving Minority Women Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Consuelo Valentina Riso

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread public health concern that disproportionately affects women, particularly those belonging to minorities. In the United States, the prevalence of IPV among Latina women is influenced by intersecting factors such as immigration status, socioeconomic stressors, cultural values, and systemic barriers. Research and community initiatives addressing IPV among Latina women have included crisis hotlines, domestic violence shelters, advocacy programs, and bilingual services within community health centers. Research also highlights that culturally tailored services yield better outcomes than trauma-informed approaches alone.

Additionally, online interventions are emerging as promising tools to expand safe, accessible, and bilingual support, …

Evaluation Of The Performance Diagnostic Checklist-Human Services In Identification Of Problem And Treatment, Jenna M. Gray

Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences

The Performance Diagnostic Checklist – Human Services (PDC-HS) is an assessment tool used to identify factors influencing employee performance in human service settings. Although prior research supports its effectiveness in identifying performance barriers, little is known about the accuracy of the intervention selection process. This study examined the accuracy with which participants scored the PDC-HS and selected appropriate interventions. In Study 1, 23 participants watched video vignettes of mock PDC-HS interviews, completed the assessment, and identified indicated domains and interventions. Scoring accuracy was consistent with prior research, but intervention selection accuracy was highly variable, with most errors occurring in the …
