Hydroponic Green Walls As A Sustainable Solution For Thermal Comfort And Energy Efficiency In Office Buildings, Hosam Abd El-Aziz Amr, Maya Hisham Fathy
Architectural Engineering
Since Egypt is urbanizing rapidly, office buildings suffer from severe thermal comfort and energy efficiency issues. Poor insulation and high temperatures result in heavy energy consumption in cooling. This study proposes the application of hydroponic green walls to enhance thermal performance and aesthetics in urban office buildings. With these exterior walls integrated into building facades, issues of heavy energy consumption due to poor insulation and high temperatures are resolved. Hydroponic green walls not only enhance insulation and energy consumption but also render working conditions greener and more productive. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are employed by this study in evaluating …

Apartheid In Israel: An Analysis Of Israel’S Laws And Policies And The Responsibilities Of Us Academic And Other Institutions, Susan Akram
Faculty Scholarship
This report analyzes the crime of apartheid and its application to Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) before and after October 7, 2023. Our analysis relies on a close examination of more than 25 credible human rights reports and judicial opinions from institutions and individuals with expertise in the region. Consistent with the findings of these experts, we conclude that Israel has committed and continues to commit the crime of apartheid as defined by the 1973 United Nations International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid (Apartheid Convention). Although Israel is not …
Harms, Relationships, And The Contours Of Liability For Emotional Distress, Steven Schaus
Harms, Relationships, And The Contours Of Liability For Emotional Distress, Steven Schaus
Articles
In Reasonableness and Risk, Greg Keating argues that the law of torts is “preoccupied” with harm—with safeguarding conditions of effective agency. In this comment, I ask whether Keating’s picture can make sense of the tort claims, like loss of consortium, that provide some measure of protection to relationships—and to marriage-like relationships, in particular. It would be awful if my life partner were seriously injured or killed—a serious setback to my interests—a harm by almost any measure. But in what sense would it impair my agency, as Keating’s account of harm seems to require? I explain the force of the question …

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) affects quality-of-life (QoL) in people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF), despite the reduction in symptoms and symptom severity associated with cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators [1]. To precisely assess sinus symptoms and treatment needs in the post-modulator period, patient-related QOL instruments should be revisited. The 22-item SinoNasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) measures CRS burden and QoL. Abbreviated surveys can lessen respondent fatigue. Item response theory (IRT) can help refine surveys by identifying the most informative survey items while maintaining reliability [2–4]. IRT assesses item discrimination (ɑ), the ability to differentiate trait levels, and difficulty (β), which defines …

Maintaining a balance of inorganic phosphate (Pi) is vital for cellular functionality. Proper phosphate levels are managed through Pi import and export; and the processes governing Pi export remain the least understood. Xenotropic and Polytropic retrovirus Receptor 1 (XPR1) has been identified as the only known Pi export protein in mammals. In this study, we introduce the cryogenic electron microscopy structure of human XPR1 (hXPR1), unveiling a structural arrangement distinct from that of any known ion transporter. Our structural results suggest that hXPR1 may operate as an ion channel, a hypothesis supported by patch clamp recordings revealing hXPR1's voltage- and …

Colorectal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers today, but it can be prevented through early detection of malignant polyps in the colon, primarily via colonoscopies. While this method has saved many lives, human error remains a significant challenge, as missing a polyp could have fatal consequences for the patient. Deep learning (DL) polyp detectors offer a promising solution. However, existing DL polyp detectors often mistake white light reflections from the endoscope for polyps, which can lead to false this http URL address this challenge, in this paper, we propose a novel data augmentation approach that artificially adds more white …

Entrepreneurs In The Making: A Qualitative Exploration Of Entrepreneurial Mindset In Engineering Learners, Ethan C. Howard
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
A prominent statistic within the field of entrepreneurship is the relatively low business failure rate of entrepreneurs holding engineering degrees compared with entrepreneurs holding other degrees. Engineers, particularly with software engineering and mechanical engineering backgrounds, account for approximately 20% of all billionaires and are similarly overrepresented among millionaires. The underlying reasons for how entrepreneurs achieve success has been explored in a number of ways, including in research on Entrepreneurial Mindset (EM). A collated model of EM highlights four key areas on the likelihood of entrepreneurial success for an individual: 1) cognitive perspective, 2) creating value by recognizing and acting on …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Context Ecological functions provided by fire refugia are critical for supporting conifer forest resiliency under increased fire activity across the western United States. The spatial distribution and persistence of fire refugia over time are uncertain as fire-injured trees continue to die over subsequent years post-fire. Objectives We examined how post-fire delayed tree mortality affects the spatial distribution and attributes of fire refugia at patch and landscape scales following high-severity wildfires. Methods To explore changes in fire refugia patch size, isolation, and fragmentation over time, we used high-resolution satellite imagery (3 m pixel size) following high-severity fires in Oregon’s western Cascades …

UNLV Transfer Student Seminar Poster (COE 303)
Issue: Church accessibility and digital inclusion.
Controversy: Does livestreaming strengthen or weaken spiritual community
Viewpoint 1: Barna Group (2020) – Found that online church gives people more access, especially during and after the pandemic.
Viewpoint 2: Pew Research Center (2021) – Reports some worry that virtual worship reduces personal connection and long-term engagement.
Viewpoint 3: Campbell (2012) – Argues that digital religion is evolving and churches must balance tradition with technology.
My View (Graff & Birkenstein, 2021): Livestreaming is a ministry tool that helps include people who are sick, isolated, or unable to attend in person—it expands, not replaces, spiritual …

Enhancing Pediatric Perianesthesia Nursing Practice With The Donna Wright Competency Model, Britney Ng
Master's Projects and Capstones
Background Pediatric perianesthesia nurses care for patients with a wide range of complex needs. While annual competency checks are required, traditional checklist approaches do not always reflect real-life clinical situations or give nurses a chance to fully engage in their learning. This can contribute to gaps in clinical knowledge and reduced engagement in continuous learning. Objective At a San Francisco Bay Area children’s hospital, only 65% of perianesthesia nurses rated themselves as confident in their competencies. As a result, the leadership team decided to implement the Donna Wright Competency Model (DWCM), which focuses on meaningful, staff-led skill development. Aim This …

A Bitter Brew For Cancer: Egcg’S Impact On Ewing Sarcoma Cells, Lizzeth Holguin, Mary-Esther Leblanc, Mariana Reyes, Terry Jo Shackleford
Cell and Molecular Methods
Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), a powerful antioxidant found in green tea, is an abundant treatment to treat Ewing Sarcoma cells, a pediatric cancer affecting the skeletal system. Given EGCG’s known role in other cancer treatments, these tests aim to investigate its effects as a standalone natural compound on Ewing Sarcoma cells. Focusing on the PI3K/AKT pathway, if the PI3K/AKT pathway is inhibited by EGCG, then it will lead to reduced cell survival and proliferation of EW8 cells. Using cell culture techniques, IncuCyte-based IC50 analysis, caspase 3/7, RNA purification, cDNA synthesis, and qRT-PCR, EGCG’s impact was assessed on cell apoptosis and gene …

The Effect Of Epigallocatechin Gallate (Egcg) And Alpha L-Mangostin On Tp53, Bax, And Vim Gene Expression And Apoptosis In Ewing Sarcoma Cells, Victoria Valdez, Terry Jo Shackleford
Cell and Molecular Methods
Ewing Sarcoma (ES) is a malignant pediatric bone tumor driven by chromosomal translocations and fusion oncogenes with limited targeted treatment options. This study investigated the chemopreventive potential of two natural compounds, Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) found in green tea, and Alpha L-Mangostin from mangosteen, on apoptosis and gene expression in ES cells. We hypothesized that EGCG and Alpha L-Mangostin treatment would induce apoptosis and downregulate cancer-promoting genes. To test this, we performed tissue culture, IC50 assays, caspase-based apoptosis detection, RNA purification, cDNA synthesis, and qRT-PCR on ES cell lines treated with a high and low concentration of the two compounds. Our …

When Poison Is On The Menu: Proposing The Adoption Of Ireland’S Stricter Allergen Regulations In America’S Food Establishments, Katherine Fitzgerald
Journal of Law and Policy
In the modern era, a growing number of children and adults have been diagnosed with deadly food allergies. For the approximately 33 million Americans who have at least one food allergy, restaurants, aside from the home, are the most likely place where deadly reactions could occur. In order to adapt to this expanding and sensitive population, the federal government should pass legislation that protects these citizens from suffering a preventable, untimely death. Luckily, the legislators of the European Union, and specifically Ireland, have already put food labeling legislation in place that serves to protect those with food allergies. This Irish …
Pragmatics And Textualism, Lawrence B. Solum
Pragmatics And Textualism, Lawrence B. Solum
Journal of Law and Policy
In theoretical linguistics the word “pragmatics” refers to the roles of context and communicative intentions in the production of meaning. Those roles include contextual disambiguation and the communication of implicit content via what is called “pragmatic enrichment.” Textualism is sometimes characterized as the view that the meaning of statutory texts should not take context into account, but that characterization is incorrect. Not only do self-identified textualists explicitly maintain that context should be considered when interpreting statutes—all good textualists must do so. Absent consideration of context, the meaning of statutory texts would be pervasively ambiguous, sparse, and incomplete. Good textualism requires …

America’S Rampant Gun Epidemic: How 3d Printers Are Only Adding Fuel To The Fire, Haley Lustbader
Journal of Law and Policy
The assassination of the United Healthcare CEO in December of 2024 captivated national attention, specifically over the killer’s use of a homemade three dimensional (“3D”) printed gun. The use of 3D printing poses a breadth of opportunity for useful and valuable innovation across a variety of fields, such as allowing advancements in medical technology. However, with technology expansion comes associated risk and, in this case, that risk is the potential for increased presence of illegal firearms. Anyone with access to a 3D printer can download the necessary files and print weapon parts to create their own unregistered, untraceable firearms, including …

A Stronger Future For Family Law Arbitration: Enhancing The Uniform Family Law Arbitration Act To Shield The Vulnerable, Jayden Solomon
Journal of Law and Policy
The rising popularity of alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”) methods, particularly arbitration, has transformed family law practices, offering more accessible and efficient means of resolving disputes. This Note explores the critical role of the Uniform Family Law Arbitration Act (“UFLAA”) in safeguarding vulnerable populations, specifically children and domestic violence survivors, within the arbitration process. While the UFLAA offers important protections, these measures should serve as a starting point rather than a benchmark for ensuring these safeguards. This Note advocates for the integration of more robust protections within the UFLAA to better protect these individuals throughout arbitration. It examines the history of …
Unveiling The Underbelly Of Artificial Intelligence: The Inadequacies Of The Legal System With Regard To Victims Of Nonconsensual Sexual Deepfakes, Zilana Lee
Journal of Law and Policy
Artificial intelligence-powered deepfake technology has ushered a new era of digital sexual abuse, allowing for the seamless fabrication of explicit images that violate bodily autonomy with alarming realism. With little more than a photograph scraped from social media, individuals can use AI tools to fabricate hyper-realistic nude images and pornographic videos of people without their consent. These nonconsensual sexual deepfakes are rapidly spreading online, often going viral before victims are even aware of their existence. The technology can affect anyone, but women and girls remain disproportionately targeted. Recent incidents involving minors highlight both the reach and severity of this harm. …
Shaping A More Equitable Election System: A Canadian Approach To Solving The Voting Rights Crisis In America, Michelle Gutowski
Shaping A More Equitable Election System: A Canadian Approach To Solving The Voting Rights Crisis In America, Michelle Gutowski
Journal of Law and Policy
In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed, ushering in a new era of voting freedom. The Act brought an end to many of the overtly discriminatory practices that had persisted for nearly two centuries. Over time, however, states began to introduce more subtle and complex voting regulations that gradually undermined the gains achieved through the civil rights movement. In 2021, the Supreme Court dismantled an essential safeguard for voters, significantly weakening the protections the Act once guaranteed. This erosion of protections is largely attributable to a single doctrinal standard within the Act, known as the totality of the circumstances …

The Sonata For Double Bass And Piano By Ruth Gipps: A New Performer's Edition With Commentary, Nicholas M. Greer-Young
Dissertations, 2020-current
The Sonata for Double Bass and Piano by Ruth Gipps (completed in 1996) presents unique challenges for performers. The piece was previously only available in a published version of the manuscript which lacks many articulation markings, dynamics, and other expressive indicators. This allows performers justification for a wide variety of interpretations but also requires a high level of analytical investment to produce a compelling performance. The new, fully edited, score makes the sonata more easily accessible while the opportunity to engage in in-depth analysis and interpretation offers tremendous pedagogical value to students who would like to start from the first …

Athletic Training preceptorships play a crucial role in student education as they heavily influence student learning and progression in the academic program (Mazerolle et al., 2015). The problem that arises from preceptorships is the inconsistencies athletic training students experience in leadership. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate athletic training student perceptions of situational leadership as it relates to student satisfaction with the development of a measurement tool. An exploratory mixed methods design composed of a qualitative phase one, pilot testing quantitative phase two, and quantitative phase three. The qualitative phase provided insightful perspectives on preceptor leadership from …
