Exploring Clinical Social Workers' Challenges And Strategies For Co-Occurring Disorders In Private Practice Settings, Shakeena Y. Speller May 2025

Exploring Clinical Social Workers' Challenges And Strategies For Co-Occurring Disorders In Private Practice Settings, Shakeena Y. Speller

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Co-occurring mental health (MH) and substance use disorders (SUDs) pose a significant challenge for social work practice, especially for licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) in private practice who often work with limited resources and support. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the service delivery, care coordination strategies, and challenges of LCSWs in private practice working with co-occurring MH and SUDs. Moore’s social work practice model of case management was used to explain how LCSWs in private practice settings manage complex cases within fragmented MH and SU care systems. Semistructured interviews were used to collect data from …

Sub Terra, Daniel J. Forest May 2025

Sub Terra, Daniel J. Forest

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

Abstract

Sub Terra is an immersive exhibition that renders intangible states of mind through sculptural installation. These constructions speak to internalized angst and complexity, mirroring what is seldom looked at, witnessed, or acknowledged. Many symbolic elements are suspended from either the walls and ceiling or within constructed frames, evoking entanglement. My work is an attempt to express the emotion turmoil inherent to living in an increasingly bureaucratic society and its effect on someone with an anxiety disorder.

The fabrication entails several broad skill sets, requiring familiarity with psychology, physiology, fine woodworking, ceramics, felting, and drafting. Preliminary sketches guided construction and …

Policy Analysis Of Assessments To Award Seals Of Biliteracy In Spanish In The United States, Lisa J. Harmon-Martínez May 2025

Policy Analysis Of Assessments To Award Seals Of Biliteracy In Spanish In The United States, Lisa J. Harmon-Martínez

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL) honors high school graduates demonstrating proficiency in two or more languages, yet its policies often perpetuate inequities. Focusing on New Mexico and Spanish language assessments, I explored how the SoBL's recognition of bilingualism intersects with biases against Spanish speakers. While the SoBL aims to celebrate bilingualism, disparities arise from state-to-state variations in assessment requirements, particularly affecting Spanish-speaking students and those receiving English Language Development services. Many states rely on standardized exams that inadequately capture students’ linguistic abilities, exacerbating inequalities. Using an Open Systems policy framework and Translanguaging theory, which values students’ full linguistic repertoires, I …

Where Has Saudi Arabia Been? Reframing Power, Progress, And The Privilege Of A Region Misunderstood, Essraa Nawar

Library Articles and Research

"Everywhere—from policy circles to tech summits—people are asking: What is happening in Saudi Arabia? Why is everyone talking about it now? What changed?

And so I ask: Where has Saudi Arabia really been?

The answer is layered and long overdue. Saudi Arabia hasn’t been absent. It has been building—quietly, strategically, and deliberately. During my recent visit to Riyadh, I conducted extensive interviews, site visits, and both qualitative and quantitative data collection across public and private sectors. I engaged with professionals from ministries, startups, universities, and cultural institutions. This piece is not a mere reflection—it is grounded in data, dialogue, and …

Balance, Liberty, And Law: Montesquieu’S Legacy In U.S. Constitutional Thought, Christian Yockey May 2025

Balance, Liberty, And Law: Montesquieu’S Legacy In U.S. Constitutional Thought, Christian Yockey

History Student Research

In 1787, a Constitutional Convention was convened to revise the weak Articles of Confederation. However, the delegates at this convention ended up creating an entirely new system of government—that is one with a much more powerful structure of federal power. This paper examines the influence of the French philosopher Baron de Montesquieu on this process and the creation of early U.S. political culture. While previous academic scholarship has acknowledged Montesquieu’s influence on this process of writing the Constitution, this paper seeks to explore further the specific ways his influence shows itself in the U.S. Constitution and the creation of U.S. …

Bell Telephone System’S Preeminent Role In The Growth Of Industrial Design, Ralph O. Meyer, Russell A. Flinchum May 2025

Bell Telephone System’S Preeminent Role In The Growth Of Industrial Design, Ralph O. Meyer, Russell A. Flinchum

Purdue University Press Books

Histories of design pay scant attention to the corded telephone, which played an immeasurable role in early communication. Although the Bell System, with many Nobel Prizes, is justly acknowledged for its technical prowess, it should also be recognized for its early and considerable impact on the developing discipline of industrial design. In 1930, young Henry Dreyfuss, who would later become known as a pioneer of industrial design, was retained by the Bell System as a design consultant and matured in that environment. With substantial input from Bell System engineers, Dreyfuss and his staff produced attractive telephone designs that were manufactured …

Diagnostic Considerations For Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors With Altered Immunophenotype Following Imatinib Treatment: A Case Report And Literature Review, Jihuan Chen, Liz M. Yang, Jonathan Somma, Yujun Gan, Zengying Wu, Zhiyan Fu May 2025

Diagnostic Considerations For Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors With Altered Immunophenotype Following Imatinib Treatment: A Case Report And Literature Review, Jihuan Chen, Liz M. Yang, Jonathan Somma, Yujun Gan, Zengying Wu, Zhiyan Fu

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors in the gastrointestinal tract and have a high rate of recurrence and metastasis. Using an immunohistochemical (IHC) panel including KIT/CD117 and DOG1 allows for accurate diagnosis in more than 98% of cases. However, after tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment, some cases can exhibit histologic dedifferentiation and loss of KIT/CD117 and DOG1 expression that may cause difficulty in confirming recurrent or persistent disease. We present such a case of an Imatinib treated, CD117 and DOG1 dual negative, metastatic GIST to the liver in a 55-year-old female which required molecular analysis to confirm …

Alsafwani, Parvez Khan, Dhananjay D. Shinde, Subodh M. Lele, Lynette M. Smith, Mohd W. Nasser, Surinder K. Batra, Apar Kishor Ganti, Imayavaramban Lakshmanan

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Glycosylation controls immune evasion, tumor progression, and metastasis. However, how tumor cell sialylation regulates immune evasion remains poorly characterized. ST6GalNAc-I, a sialyltransferase that conjugates sialic acid to the glycans in glycoproteins, was overexpressed in an aggressive-type KPA (KrasG12D/+ Trp53R172H/+ Ad-Cre) lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) model and patient samples. Proteomic and biochemical analysis indicated that ST6GalNAc-I mediated NECTIN2 sialylation in LUAD cells. ST6GalNAc-I-deficient tumor cells cocultured with T cells were more susceptible to T cell-mediated tumor cell killing, indicating a key role for NECTIN2 in T cell dysfunction. Mice injected with St6galnac-I-knockdown syngeneic cells showed reduced lung tumor incidence and Nectin2/Tigit-associated immunosuppression. …

Comparison Of Gluteal Muscle Central Activation In Individuals With And Without Patellofemoral Pain, Michael Carpio, John S. Donohue, Jacob P. Kissman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Purpose/Hypothesis: Individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP) often present with knee valgus during weight-bearing activities. Weakness in the gluteal muscles is thought to contribute to this condition, but recent studies suggest that hip weakness might be a secondary problem in this population. Central nervous system adaptations have been noted in persons with PFP, which can lead to altered muscle function, faulty movement patterns, and poor function. Experimentally, central activation can be quantified by a central activation ratio (CAR) via superimposed burst (SIB) during a maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) where the ratio of volitionally activated motor units to total motor units …

The “Asian”-Ness Of Women Influencing The Romance Plot In Contemporary Ya Literature, Janetsa Jane Keovorabouth

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Contemporary young adult literature (YAL) is a growing genre that features a diverse range of stories, allowing young readers to see themselves reflected in realistic stories. One of its prominent subgenres, contemporary young adult romance focuses on a modern love story between two individuals. Historically, Asian American female characters were often depicted as the “model minority” stereotype or represented as exoticized figures who held traits such as mysterious, submissive, or seductive creatures. These portrayals often treated the Asian American experience as monolithic. However, the genre now explores an intersection of identity and romance, addressing themes commonly found in contemporary realism …

Clinical Benefit Analysis Of Modified Motion Management Protocols, Dyanne S. Macalinao May 2025

Clinical Benefit Analysis Of Modified Motion Management Protocols, Dyanne S. Macalinao

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Radiation therapy is crucial for treating cancer, using ionizing radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. This radiation is produced by machines like linear accelerators or through natural radioactive decay. Radiation therapy treatment planning involves prescribing doses and contouring target areas. However, managing tumors that move with breathing, such as in the lungs, remains a major challenge. Tumor motion exceeding 5 mm, as outlined in the AAPM’s Task Group 76, can compromise treatment accuracy, risking underdosing the tumor and overdosing healthy tissue. This issue is especially critical in high dose treatments like stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). TG-76 provides different …
