Stress-Related Phenotypic Differentiation Identified By Motivational Behaviors In Male Mice, Renee A. Brummels
Stress-Related Phenotypic Differentiation Identified By Motivational Behaviors In Male Mice, Renee A. Brummels
Honors Thesis
Social stress substantially contributes to psychological disorders, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Recognizing these disorders affect millions, it is essential to understand social stress’s impacts on behavior and how these behaviors vary among affected populations. We address these questions through a social defeat/avoidance paradigm, the Stress-Alternatives Model (SAM), which demonstrates defeat (Stay) and avoidance (Escape) responses across species, including fish, rats, hamsters, and mice. Avoidance of social conflict in the SAM is possible by utilizing escape routes for smaller test mice during aggressive interactions. Additionally, measurements of SAM motivational behaviors, like time near and nose pokes into escape …
Loadshedding And Nighttime Light Intensity In South Africa: Evidence From High-Frequency Satellite Data, Jurney Lajos
Loadshedding And Nighttime Light Intensity In South Africa: Evidence From High-Frequency Satellite Data, Jurney Lajos
Master's Theses
This paper investigates the relationship between loadshedding and nighttime light intensity in South Africa using high-frequency satellite data from 2020 to 2024. By linking rotational blackout schedules to daily radiance measurements at the suburb level, the study examines how electricity disruptions affect visible light emissions and whether these effects vary by wealth. Results show that while load shedding has be-come increasingly severe in recent years, its impact is not felt equally. Poorer suburbs experience larger and more persistent reductions in nighttime radiance during black-outs, suggesting limited capacity to adapt. In contrast, wealthier suburbs show signs of resilience, with smaller drops …
Post Secondary Teaching Toolkit: A Concise Resource To Highlight Effective Pedagogical Strategies For Post-Secondary Instructors, Matthew Thomas Blackwell
Post Secondary Teaching Toolkit: A Concise Resource To Highlight Effective Pedagogical Strategies For Post-Secondary Instructors, Matthew Thomas Blackwell
Theses and Dissertations
This project seeks to provide teaching support for post-secondary instructors, especially at the community college level, by creating an instructional toolkit that highlights a selection of evidence-based teaching strategies intended to increase student engagement, learning, and achievement. This toolkit includes evidence-based instructional strategies tailored to support post-secondary instructors of any experience level. It highlights research-proven student-centered engagement and instructional techniques such as cooperative learning, inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning, and student interaction in online learning environments. Within the project, the various instructional and engagement techniques are linked together using the Constructivist Learning Theory theoretical framework, highlighting the importance of …
Wildfire Hydrologic Impacts, Kathleen E. Inman
Wildfire Hydrologic Impacts, Kathleen E. Inman
Theses and Dissertations
Wildfires are essential processes for certain ecosystems but are increasing in severity and occurrence. These increases are negatively changing hydrology. Anticipating the hydrologic changes is necessary for management of effected watersheds, infrastructure, and downstream users. This study hypothesized land cover changes post-fire would increase water temperature and discharge in burned watersheds located in the Willamette Basin. This study (1) evaluated the change in estimated curve numbers (CN) from land cover pre-fire and post-fire to assess expected runoff impacts in watersheds, and (2) identified the significance of actual water temperature and discharge changes using non-parametric statistical analysis. An unburned watershed and …
Evaluating Simulated Threecornered Alfalfa Hopper (Hemiptera: Membracidae) Damage In Cotton (Malvales: Malvaceae) And Identifying Conducive Environments, Reece Starnes Butler
Evaluating Simulated Threecornered Alfalfa Hopper (Hemiptera: Membracidae) Damage In Cotton (Malvales: Malvaceae) And Identifying Conducive Environments, Reece Starnes Butler
Theses and Dissertations
This research evaluated the effects of simulated threecornered alfalfa hopper (TCAH), Spissistilus festinus (Say), damage in cotton and aimed to identify environments that may contribute to an increase in TCAH injury. During the 2023 and 2024 growing season, simulated TCAH damage was imposed at 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% at the three and six leaf growth stage. Agronomic data included plant heights, node counts, and plant mapping, which was collected throughout the growing season, while lint yield was recorded at harvest. Damaged plants exhibited reduced plant heights and node counts, with an increase in nodes above cracked boll …
Evaluating The Efficacy Of Functional Feed Additives In Broilers With Or Without A Live Coccidiosis Vaccine Challenge, Dalton Gerard Dennehy
Evaluating The Efficacy Of Functional Feed Additives In Broilers With Or Without A Live Coccidiosis Vaccine Challenge, Dalton Gerard Dennehy
Theses and Dissertations
Functional feed additives, such as probiotics, prebiotics, and phytogenics, have seen increased usage in commercial poultry production due to their ability to improve growth performance, meat yield, and overall health status. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of functional feed additives in broilers with or without an enteric challenge induced via a live coccidiosis vaccine (LCV). In the first study (Chapter II), broilers were raised on used litter without an LCV challenge and fed varying levels of a multi-strain Bacillus-based probiotic in the starter phase (1x or 2x dose). Reduced performance was observed in early …
Advancing Wood Chip Moisture Content Prediction Using Advanced Generative Ai Techniques, Daniel Esteban Marulanda
Advancing Wood Chip Moisture Content Prediction Using Advanced Generative Ai Techniques, Daniel Esteban Marulanda
Theses and Dissertations
In this study we propose a deep learning method to optimize the classification of wood chip moisture content levels using the Vision Transformer and then ultimately increase the classification performance by creating synthetic images using the diffusion transformer model. In the first chapter of our study, we complete a detailed explanation of how the moisture content levels of 10 different wood chips were gathered ranging from 2 to 50$\%$. This chapter serves as a foundation for subsequent sections, illustrating the challenges associated with the current data collection process, which is both time-consuming and inefficient. Accurately determining moisture content for wood …
“Sometimes The World Don’T Give You What You Need”: Black Motherhood And Kinship As Resistance To Necropolitics In Jesmyn Ward’S Bois Sauvage, Hailey N. Reeder
“Sometimes The World Don’T Give You What You Need”: Black Motherhood And Kinship As Resistance To Necropolitics In Jesmyn Ward’S Bois Sauvage, Hailey N. Reeder
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how Black motherhood and kinship serve as subversive forces within necropolitical landscapes in Jesmyn Ward’s Where the Line Bleeds, Salvage the Bones, and Sing, Unburied, Sing. Drawing on Achille Mbembe’s theory of necropolitics, this study examines how the economic and social constraints of these environments disrupt Black family structures, emphasizing the necessity of kinship for survival. In Where the Line Bleeds, Cille’s absence disrupts traditional family roles, yet kinship networks allow the family to endure. In Salvage the Bones, Esch’s journey redefines the “bad” Black teen mother stereotype, highlighting how kinship offers support amidst stigma. In Sing, …
An Investigation Into The Inclusivity, Methodology, And Education Of Severe Weather In K-12 Schools, Stephen Holden Wooten
An Investigation Into The Inclusivity, Methodology, And Education Of Severe Weather In K-12 Schools, Stephen Holden Wooten
Theses and Dissertations
Schools are a focal point in the lives of everyone in the community, especially teachers, parents, and students. Investigating the connection between these individuals and tornadoes by identifying shortcomings in education, training, and emergency procedures can induce more effective and informed decision-making for future encounters. This study evaluated the inclusivity of tornado protocols for students with disabilities, uncovered where parents prefer their child to shelter in early dismissal situations and clarified how extensively natural hazard education and tornado drills are covered in schools. Two surveys and semi-structured interviews were used to obtain responses from earth science teachers, K-12 guardians, and …
