Architecture Through Modularity, Jafet Estrada
Architecture Through Modularity, Jafet Estrada
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Globally, an estimated 1.8 billion people lack access to adequate housing with an included 150 million people who live in permanent homelessness. Additionally, Housing costs have significantly outpaced income growth globally. Between 2014 and 2022, house price-to-income ratios have risen, with the global median ratio now at 6.1 (up from around 5 in 2014). Architecture through modularity could transform these lives with low-cost solutions. Modularity more broadly refers to a system’s ability to be broken down into smaller, self-contained, and interchangeable parts or modules. These modules function independently but are designed to work together as part of a cohesive whole. …

Interactive Bodies: Creating A Haptic Dialogue, Evan R. Haller
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
BUILDINGS ARE BORING. The majority of modern buildings often fail to have meaningful engagements with their occupants, resulting in static spaces that prioritize function over experience. If we continue to design for pure functionality, are we any different from machines? My thesis, “Interactive Bodies: Creating a Haptic Dialogue,” explores a shift in architectural design where spaces can adapt and change depending on the users’ ability to interact with them.
Through various case studies on kinetic architecture and interactive design experiments, as well as inspiration from Archigram, my research investigates how kinetic components can foster a more meaningful relationship between people …
Balancing Act: Retrofitting Office Design To Enrich Communities, Luke A. Griffith
Balancing Act: Retrofitting Office Design To Enrich Communities, Luke A. Griffith
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The office workplace has shifted tremendously in the last decade. The world is adapting quickly to new technology and culture changes, but office buildings seem to be stuck in the past. COVID-19 has brought the world to a stand still and moved the way to do business to our homes. This shift has taught the workforce that most work can be done as efficiently at home than in the office. This leads to existing office buildings becoming rapidly vacant due to the lack of consistent occupancy throughout the work week. Where does that leave the future of the existing office …
Big-Box Stores To Refuge: Transforming Commercial Spaces Into Modular Emergency Shelters, Garrett Byrne
Big-Box Stores To Refuge: Transforming Commercial Spaces Into Modular Emergency Shelters, Garrett Byrne
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
As sea levels rise and climate disasters become more prevalent, this will displace residents. The importance of a scalable adaptable emergency shelter solution is vital. By proposing an renovation of existing big-box warehouses, such as Walmart, into refuge centers that can accommodate large number of displaced individuals. These refuge centers with their elevated platforms, strategic geographic distribution, and proximity to their flood zones, were well suited for elevated, climate resilient shelters. The design uses modular construction systems that uses kit-of-part beds that can be deployed for personal spaces and modules, enabling rapid assembly, flexible layouts, and efficient transportation. Elevated platforms …

Debunking The Past - A Descent Through Memory, Architecture, And Ruin, Nili Karaj
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Albania’s landscape is etched with the remnants of a totalitarian past, most notably through its widespread network of bunkers constructed at the peak of the Cold War under Dictator Enver Hoxha. Among them, the "Big Bunker," situated in the Ceraunian Mountains overlooking the Ionian Sea, stands as both a monumental relic and a spatial threshold between past and future.
This thesis reimagines the Big Bunker not merely as an object of preservation but as a site of transformation: an architectural journey through memory, ideology, and renewal. Through a qualitative case study combining on-site observation, architectural analysis, and historical research, the …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
We proposed gdGSE, a novel computational framework for gene set enrichment analysis. Unlike conventional methods that rely on continuous gene expression values, gdGSE employs discretized gene expression profiles to assess pathway activity. This approach effectively mitigates discrepancies caused by data distributions. This algorithm consists of two steps: (1) applying statistical thresholds binarizing gene expression matrix, and (2) converting the binarized gene expression matrix into a gene set enrichment matrix. Our results demonstrated that gdGSE could robustly extract biological insights from a diverse array of simulated and real bulk or single-cell gene expression datasets. Notably, gene set enrichment scores by gdGSE …

Background: Posterior circulation strokes comprise one-fourth of ischemic strokes and can arise from many causes. One rare etiology is transient occlusion of the vertebral artery (VA) with head rotation due to an osteophyte, termed bow hunter's syndrome. The authors present the case of recurrent thromboembolic posterior strokes secondary to transient reopening of an osteophyte-occluded VA.
Observations: A 71-year-old man presented with dizziness and visual changes with a history of prior cervical fusion and myocardial ischemia, controlled with Plavix and aspirin. CT angiography of the neck revealed osteophyte occlusion of the right VA at C4, and MRI revealed a right posterior …

Background: Signed language integrates complex sensorimotor processes involving visual and motor networks. The contribution of language regions such as Broca's and Wernicke's areas during signing is not well established. Here, the authors report the case of a 45-year-old right-handed male with congenital deafness, who communicates using American Sign Language (ASL) and Signed English, presenting with focal seizures. Imaging showed a diffuse infiltrative glioma in the right cerebral hemisphere.
Observations: Remarkably, preoperative functional MRI language activations were bihemispheric and overlapped for both traditional language paradigms and sign paradigms, suggesting that the same cortical regions of the brain are used for language …

Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code—supporting symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged but at the expense of run-time performance. Though hybrid approaches aim for the "best of both worlds," using them effectively requires subtle considerations to make code amenable to safe, accurate, and efficient graph execution—avoiding performance bottlenecks and semantically inequivalent results. We discuss the engineering aspects of a …

Ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 2022 December 31, with a total exposure of 135,000 km2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an …

This research aims to investigate and explain three-dimensional (3D) learning through the phenomenon-based science education approach. The study employed documentary review research methodology to analyze sources that introduce phenomenon-based science education (including research articles, new science education standards, and Iran's national science curriculum guide). The findings indicate that three-dimensional learning, with its emphasis on disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices, provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and explaining natural phenomena. In this research, the six stages of phenomenon-based science education—including introducing the phenomenon, creating a questions-observations-interpretations table, developing an initial model, exploring the phenomenon, completing a …
“I Was Just Doing My Job”: An Oral History Of Vietnam Veterans And The Impact Of Their Voices In Collective War Memory, Alyssa Morris
“I Was Just Doing My Job”: An Oral History Of Vietnam Veterans And The Impact Of Their Voices In Collective War Memory, Alyssa Morris
Masters Theses, 2020-current
This master's thesis explores how oral histories from Vietnam veterans provide vital counter-narratives to traditional, often impersonal, military histories. Inspired by the author's grandfather, a Vietnam veteran, the project collects and analyzes ten interviews conducted as part of the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project. The study emphasizes how oral history not only preserves overlooked personal stories but also restores humanity and empathy to historical understanding. Not only does this project highlight the findings of the interviews but also details the process the author went through before and during the interviews, accompanying that is advice on best practices and how …

Background: This study examined the relationship between hearing device price and sound quality. Method: A novel consumer-centric metric of sound quality (“SoundScore”) was used to assess hearing devices’ audio performance. Each hearing device is tested with two fittings. The “Initial Fit” is designed to approximate the most likely fitting for an individual with a mild-to-moderate sloping sensorineural hearing loss. The “Tuned Fit” includes adjusting parameters optimized to hit prescriptive fitting targets (NAL NL2) on an acoustic manikin. Each fitting is evaluated across five dimensions. Both fittings are combined using a weighted average to create a single number from 0 to …
What Are The Effects Of Time-Restricted Eating Upon Metabolic Health Outcomes In Individuals With Metabolic Syndrome: A Scoping Review, Rory J Heath, Jessie Welbourne, Daniel Martin
What Are The Effects Of Time-Restricted Eating Upon Metabolic Health Outcomes In Individuals With Metabolic Syndrome: A Scoping Review, Rory J Heath, Jessie Welbourne, Daniel Martin
Peninsula Medical School
The primary objective of this scoping review (ScR) was to assess the breadth and type of evidence related to time-restricted eating (TRE) as an intervention to modify metabolic health outcomes in individuals with diagnosed metabolic syndrome (MetS), a major health challenge due to increasing prevalence and association with other chronic diseases. MetS comprises three or more of hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, dyslipidaemia, dysregulated glucose homeostasis, and abdominal obesity. TRE, also known as time-restricted feeding (TRF), restricts food intake to specific time windows within a day, for example, a 10-h eating period between 10:00 and 20:00. Via multiple mechanisms, TRE interventions may provide …
Defining The Enemy Within: Examining The Case For A Federal Mechanism To Designate Domestic Terrorist Organizations In The United States, Evelyn Schneider
Defining The Enemy Within: Examining The Case For A Federal Mechanism To Designate Domestic Terrorist Organizations In The United States, Evelyn Schneider
College Honors Program
Domestic terrorist incidents are on the rise within the United States. Activities of domestic terrorism increased by 357% between 2013 and 2021. While the United States has experienced a dramatic growth in domestic terrorism from violent organizations, other countries have faced this similar problem with a different approach as they have created mechanisms to officially designate domestic terrorist organizations. In this thesis, I will answer the question: Could and should the United States create a federal proscription mechanism for domestic terrorist organizations? Chapter 2 explores whether the Proud Boys, a domestic organization within the United States, could be considered a …
Proteogenomic Analysis To Inform Causal Gene Prioritization For Human Disease, Daniel Western
Proteogenomic Analysis To Inform Causal Gene Prioritization For Human Disease, Daniel Western
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been key in expanding our understanding of the genetic contributions to common diseases. However, these genetic associations frequently fail to clarify causal disease mechanisms, as they often fall in non-coding regions and are difficult to interpret. One solution is to perform a GWAS for the levels of a cellular trait, known as quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. Through methods such as colocalization, Mendelian Randomization, and transcriptome/proteome-wide association studies, the QTL variants can be compared to disease GWAS, identifying shared variation between cellular and disease traits. We can then prioritize cellular traits as potential causative, targetable …
Mitochondrial Network Expansion And Loss During Oligodendrocyte Life And Death, Xhoela Bame
Mitochondrial Network Expansion And Loss During Oligodendrocyte Life And Death, Xhoela Bame
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Oligodendrocytes are the myelinating cells of the central nervous system, known for modulating signal transmission, refining neural circuits, and providing metabolic support to axons. Oligodendrocytes are generated throughout life from oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) and are damaged or lost in demyelinating and neurodegenerative diseases and age-related pathologies. Thus, understanding the cellular checkpoints that occur during the generation and degeneration of oligodendrocytes is crucial for maintaining their population in health and recovering it in disease and aging.
Using high-resolution optical imaging, I have discovered a dynamic redistribution and subcellular partitioning of mitochondria during oligodendrogenesis. Mitochondria transiently expanded towards the differentiating OPC …
Examing The Role Of Complement Signaling In Viral Neuroinflammatory Responses, Marlene Kanmogne
Examing The Role Of Complement Signaling In Viral Neuroinflammatory Responses, Marlene Kanmogne
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The complement system is an ancient pathway that serves dual roles as a key regulator of neuroinflammation and a critical regulator of neural networks. Few studies have addressed how these two pathways may interact during infection of the central nervous system. While some components of complement are expressed in the healthy developing brain, complement component 3a receptor (C3aR) is a G protein coupled receptor that is expressed by astrocytes, microglia and infiltrating immune cells during inflammatory states. We previously found that C3aR is required for engulfment of synaptic material by activated microglia during neuroinvasive viral infection. Here, we used a …

First-Principles Studies Of Excited-State Properties In Large-Scale Systems, Du Li
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Density Functional Theory (DFT) is widely used as a powerful tool for studying the electronic structure of materials. However, due to the local or semilocal nature of exchange-correlation functionals, such as the local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation functional, DFT often underestimates the electronic band gap. Many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) within the GW approximation provides more accurate quasiparticle energies calculation by incorporating many-electron screening effects. Additionally, solving the Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) allows for a detailed analysis of excitonic effects in optical spectra. Despite their accuracy, GW-BSE calculations are computationally expensive, particularly for large-scale systems such as defects and substrate-supported …
Cumulative Lifespan Stress And Inflammation Are Associated With Black-White Racial Disparities In Mortality Among Americans, Isaiah Spears
Cumulative Lifespan Stress And Inflammation Are Associated With Black-White Racial Disparities In Mortality Among Americans, Isaiah Spears
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Black Americans disproportionately experience higher rates of health challenges and mortality compared to White Americans, yet the mechanisms underlying these disparities remain inadequately understood. Prominent theoretical models highlight stress and resulting allostatic load as putative mechanisms through which these Black-White racial disparities emerge; however, empirical data supporting such models with regard to mortality remains sparse. The current study examined the potential role of cumulative stress exposure across the life span and elevated levels of C-Reactive Protein, a biomarker of inflammation, in contributing to the longstanding increased mortality risk among Black relative to White Americans. Data were drawn from the Saint …

Novel Combination Therapies For Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer Driven By Rational Molecular Mechanisms, Anneka Lila Johnson
Novel Combination Therapies For Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer Driven By Rational Molecular Mechanisms, Anneka Lila Johnson
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Breast cancer (BC) is the most common non-keratinocyte cancer diagnosed in women in the United States with approximately 300,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Despite a myriad of treatment options, BC remains the second-most deadly cancer. Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) BC comprises 60-70% of BC diagnoses and is treated with endocrine therapies that limit ER signaling. Despite endocrine therapy options, ~1/3 of patients experience recurrence within 10-20 years of diagnosis. Novel therapeutic strategies are required to limit BC recurrence-related morbidity and mortality.
Radiotherapy is used as an adjuvant treatment for ER+ BC patients prior to the use of endocrine therapy. Radiation …

Data-Driven Dynamic Decision-Making Using Discrete Optimization And Supervised Machine Learning, Navid Rashedi
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
In recent years, the operations research community has developed data-driven optimization techniques to solve complex combinatorial problems with the aid of machine learning. This thesis contributes to these efforts by combining machine learning with optimization to expedite online decision-making, with applications in transportation and healthcare.
In the domain of airline operations recovery, the focus is on the aircraft recovery process—repairing disrupted schedules by minimizing overall disruption costs. Traditional exact methods are too time-consuming, while heuristic approaches often yield poor solution quality and lack generalizability across varying formulations. To address these challenges, this research employs supervised machine learning to identify near-optimal …

Identifying Genetic Errors Of Immunity Due To Mosaicism, Elizabeth G Schmitz, Malachi Griffith, Obi L Griffith, Megan A Cooper
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Inborn errors of immunity are monogenic disorders of the immune system that lead to immune deficiency and/or dysregulation in patients. Identification of precise genetic causes of disease aids diagnosis and advances our understanding of the human immune system; however, a significant portion of patients lack a molecular diagnosis. Somatic mosaicism, genetic changes in a subset of cells, is emerging as an important mechanism of immune disease in both young and older patients. Here, we review the current landscape of somatic genetic errors of immunity and methods for the detection and validation of somatic variants.

Patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) who develop noninfectious complications (NIC) have worse clinical outcomes than those with infections only (INF). While gut microbiome aberrations have been linked to NIC, reductionist animal models that accurately recapitulate CVID are lacking. Our aim in this study was to uncover potential microbiome roles in the development of NIC in CVID. We performed whole-genome shotgun sequencing on fecal samples from CVID patients with NIC, INF, and their household controls. We also performed fecal microbiota transplants from CVID patients to germ-free mice. We found potentially pathogenic microbes
