“We All Have Our Boulders To Pass, And This Was One Of Mine”: Ethnoculturally Diverse High-School-Aged Youth And Their Reclamation Of Nature, Andrew T. Turchon May 2025

“We All Have Our Boulders To Pass, And This Was One Of Mine”: Ethnoculturally Diverse High-School-Aged Youth And Their Reclamation Of Nature, Andrew T. Turchon

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative, ethnographic, youth-centered study explored how ethnoculturally diverse urban high-school-aged youth express their relationships to nature. Participatory and youth-centered methodologies and data sources, including Photovoice, photo-elicitation interviews, and classroom artifacts, centered the voices of a diverse group of urban youth and their experiences in local forest reservations. Diverse urban youth are typically marginalized from environmental education, place-based learning, and representation in outdoor-related research. Therefore, it is critical that educational researchers include the voices of these students in conversations about nature to broaden the sociocultural framework around what “nature” is, how it is experienced, and by whom. This theoretical framework …

Eos Wellness Center: Rethinking Inpatient Mental Health Facility Design, Emily Simms May 2025

Eos Wellness Center: Rethinking Inpatient Mental Health Facility Design, Emily Simms

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The design of mental health facilities significantly impacts patient outcomes, especially for individuals with depression. Environmental factors such as lighting, thermal comfort, and access to nature influence mental health. This research explores how architectural design can reduce self-harm incidents and enhance recovery outcomes for patients with depression. The project hypothesizes that synchronizing light patterns and thermal comfort with patients’ circadian rhythms will reduce self-harm incidents and improve recovery. The problem established in the research is that disruptions to circadian rhythms increase the risk of depression, PTSD, and anxiety by 30% (Burns et al., 2022). Suicide is also the second leading …

Invisible Scholars, Emmaline Payne

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

In the United States, every year, there are approximately 1.3 million students who experience homelessness, an individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. Homelessness among students has a significant impact on their academic performance, mental health, and behavior. Factors like higher absenteeism, constant movement, and lack of support can all contribute to decreased academic achievement. Ultimately, this leads to students having to repeat grades or not graduating high school, compromising their abilities to succeed in the future. In addition to the decrease in academic achievement, behavioral and mental challenges exacerbated by the stress of housing instability also …

Aquatic Boundaries: Reimagining BeléN, A City Carried By Water And Resilience., Kassidy R. Mcclain May 2025

Aquatic Boundaries: Reimagining BeléN, A City Carried By Water And Resilience., Kassidy R. Mcclain

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Rising water levels are not a distant threat. It is a reality that many cities already face. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the global mean sea level has risen approximately 8–9 inches since 1880. The rising sea levels affect not only coastal cities but also cities along rivers and lakes attached to the sea by causing baseline water levels along rivers to increase. The rise in baseline water levels reduces the river's ability to drain effectively, thus causing riverside areas to become more susceptible to flooding. Traditional building methods meant to keep water out of buildings often …

Architecture Through Modularity, Jafet Estrada May 2025

Architecture Through Modularity, Jafet Estrada

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Globally, an estimated 1.8 billion people lack access to adequate housing with an included 150 million people who live in permanent homelessness. Additionally, Housing costs have significantly outpaced income growth globally. Between 2014 and 2022, house price-to-income ratios have risen, with the global median ratio now at 6.1 (up from around 5 in 2014). Architecture through modularity could transform these lives with low-cost solutions. Modularity more broadly refers to a system’s ability to be broken down into smaller, self-contained, and interchangeable parts or modules. These modules function independently but are designed to work together as part of a cohesive whole. …

Interactive Bodies: Creating A Haptic Dialogue, Evan R. Haller May 2025

Interactive Bodies: Creating A Haptic Dialogue, Evan R. Haller

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

BUILDINGS ARE BORING. The majority of modern buildings often fail to have meaningful engagements with their occupants, resulting in static spaces that prioritize function over experience. If we continue to design for pure functionality, are we any different from machines? My thesis, “Interactive Bodies: Creating a Haptic Dialogue,” explores a shift in architectural design where spaces can adapt and change depending on the users’ ability to interact with them.

Through various case studies on kinetic architecture and interactive design experiments, as well as inspiration from Archigram, my research investigates how kinetic components can foster a more meaningful relationship between people …

Balancing Act: Retrofitting Office Design To Enrich Communities, Luke A. Griffith May 2025

Balancing Act: Retrofitting Office Design To Enrich Communities, Luke A. Griffith

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The office workplace has shifted tremendously in the last decade. The world is adapting quickly to new technology and culture changes, but office buildings seem to be stuck in the past. COVID-19 has brought the world to a stand still and moved the way to do business to our homes. This shift has taught the workforce that most work can be done as efficiently at home than in the office. This leads to existing office buildings becoming rapidly vacant due to the lack of consistent occupancy throughout the work week. Where does that leave the future of the existing office …

Big-Box Stores To Refuge: Transforming Commercial Spaces Into Modular Emergency Shelters, Garrett Byrne May 2025

Big-Box Stores To Refuge: Transforming Commercial Spaces Into Modular Emergency Shelters, Garrett Byrne

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

As sea levels rise and climate disasters become more prevalent, this will displace residents. The importance of a scalable adaptable emergency shelter solution is vital. By proposing an renovation of existing big-box warehouses, such as Walmart, into refuge centers that can accommodate large number of displaced individuals. These refuge centers with their elevated platforms, strategic geographic distribution, and proximity to their flood zones, were well suited for elevated, climate resilient shelters. The design uses modular construction systems that uses kit-of-part beds that can be deployed for personal spaces and modules, enabling rapid assembly, flexible layouts, and efficient transportation. Elevated platforms …

Debunking The Past - A Descent Through Memory, Architecture, And Ruin, Nili Karaj May 2025

Debunking The Past - A Descent Through Memory, Architecture, And Ruin, Nili Karaj

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Albania’s landscape is etched with the remnants of a totalitarian past, most notably through its widespread network of bunkers constructed at the peak of the Cold War under Dictator Enver Hoxha. Among them, the "Big Bunker," situated in the Ceraunian Mountains overlooking the Ionian Sea, stands as both a monumental relic and a spatial threshold between past and future.

This thesis reimagines the Big Bunker not merely as an object of preservation but as a site of transformation: an architectural journey through memory, ideology, and renewal. Through a qualitative case study combining on-site observation, architectural analysis, and historical research, the …

Gdgse: An Algorithm To Evaluate Pathway Enrichment By Discretizing Gene Expression Values, Jiangti Luo, Qiqi Lu, Mengjiao He, Xiaobo Zhang, Xiang Yang, Xiaosheng Wang May 2025

Gdgse: An Algorithm To Evaluate Pathway Enrichment By Discretizing Gene Expression Values, Jiangti Luo, Qiqi Lu, Mengjiao He, Xiaobo Zhang, Xiang Yang, Xiaosheng Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

We proposed gdGSE, a novel computational framework for gene set enrichment analysis. Unlike conventional methods that rely on continuous gene expression values, gdGSE employs discretized gene expression profiles to assess pathway activity. This approach effectively mitigates discrepancies caused by data distributions. This algorithm consists of two steps: (1) applying statistical thresholds binarizing gene expression matrix, and (2) converting the binarized gene expression matrix into a gene set enrichment matrix. Our results demonstrated that gdGSE could robustly extract biological insights from a diverse array of simulated and real bulk or single-cell gene expression datasets. Notably, gene set enrichment scores by gdGSE …

Background: Signed language integrates complex sensorimotor processes involving visual and motor networks. The contribution of language regions such as Broca's and Wernicke's areas during signing is not well established. Here, the authors report the case of a 45-year-old right-handed male with congenital deafness, who communicates using American Sign Language (ASL) and Signed English, presenting with focal seizures. Imaging showed a diffuse infiltrative glioma in the right cerebral hemisphere.

Observations: Remarkably, preoperative functional MRI language activations were bihemispheric and overlapped for both traditional language paradigms and sign paradigms, suggesting that the same cortical regions of the brain are used for language …

Hybridize Functions: A Tool For Automatically Refactoring Imperative Deep Learning Programs To Graph Execution, Raffi Khatchadourian, Tatiana Castro Vélez, Mehdi Bagherzadeh, Nan Jia, Anita Raja

Publications and Research

Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code—supporting symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged but at the expense of run-time performance. Though hybrid approaches aim for the "best of both worlds," using them effectively requires subtle considerations to make code amenable to safe, accurate, and efficient graph execution—avoiding performance bottlenecks and semantically inequivalent results. We discuss the engineering aspects of a …

Ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 2022 December 31, with a total exposure of 135,000 km2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an …

“I Was Just Doing My Job”: An Oral History Of Vietnam Veterans And The Impact Of Their Voices In Collective War Memory, Alyssa Morris

Masters Theses, 2020-current

This master's thesis explores how oral histories from Vietnam veterans provide vital counter-narratives to traditional, often impersonal, military histories. Inspired by the author's grandfather, a Vietnam veteran, the project collects and analyzes ten interviews conducted as part of the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project. The study emphasizes how oral history not only preserves overlooked personal stories but also restores humanity and empathy to historical understanding. Not only does this project highlight the findings of the interviews but also details the process the author went through before and during the interviews, accompanying that is advice on best practices and how …

Patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) who develop noninfectious complications (NIC) have worse clinical outcomes than those with infections only (INF). While gut microbiome aberrations have been linked to NIC, reductionist animal models that accurately recapitulate CVID are lacking. Our aim in this study was to uncover potential microbiome roles in the development of NIC in CVID. We performed whole-genome shotgun sequencing on fecal samples from CVID patients with NIC, INF, and their household controls. We also performed fecal microbiota transplants from CVID patients to germ-free mice. We found potentially pathogenic microbes

Mitochondrial Network Expansion And Loss During Oligodendrocyte Life And Death, Xhoela Bame May 2025

Mitochondrial Network Expansion And Loss During Oligodendrocyte Life And Death, Xhoela Bame

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Oligodendrocytes are the myelinating cells of the central nervous system, known for modulating signal transmission, refining neural circuits, and providing metabolic support to axons. Oligodendrocytes are generated throughout life from oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) and are damaged or lost in demyelinating and neurodegenerative diseases and age-related pathologies. Thus, understanding the cellular checkpoints that occur during the generation and degeneration of oligodendrocytes is crucial for maintaining their population in health and recovering it in disease and aging.

Using high-resolution optical imaging, I have discovered a dynamic redistribution and subcellular partitioning of mitochondria during oligodendrogenesis. Mitochondria transiently expanded towards the differentiating OPC …

Examing The Role Of Complement Signaling In Viral Neuroinflammatory Responses, Marlene Kanmogne May 2025

Examing The Role Of Complement Signaling In Viral Neuroinflammatory Responses, Marlene Kanmogne

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The complement system is an ancient pathway that serves dual roles as a key regulator of neuroinflammation and a critical regulator of neural networks. Few studies have addressed how these two pathways may interact during infection of the central nervous system. While some components of complement are expressed in the healthy developing brain, complement component 3a receptor (C3aR) is a G protein coupled receptor that is expressed by astrocytes, microglia and infiltrating immune cells during inflammatory states. We previously found that C3aR is required for engulfment of synaptic material by activated microglia during neuroinvasive viral infection. Here, we used a …

First-Principles Studies Of Excited-State Properties In Large-Scale Systems, Du Li May 2025

First-Principles Studies Of Excited-State Properties In Large-Scale Systems, Du Li

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Density Functional Theory (DFT) is widely used as a powerful tool for studying the electronic structure of materials. However, due to the local or semilocal nature of exchange-correlation functionals, such as the local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation functional, DFT often underestimates the electronic band gap. Many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) within the GW approximation provides more accurate quasiparticle energies calculation by incorporating many-electron screening effects. Additionally, solving the Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) allows for a detailed analysis of excitonic effects in optical spectra. Despite their accuracy, GW-BSE calculations are computationally expensive, particularly for large-scale systems such as defects and substrate-supported …
