BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli are the most common causes of bacterial enteritis worldwide whereas symptomatic and asymptomatic infections are associated with stunting in children in low- and middle-income countries. Little is known about their sources and transmission pathways in low- and middle-income countries, and particularly for infants and young children. We assessed the genomic diversity of C. jejuni in Eastern Ethiopia to determine the attribution of infections in infants under 1 year of age to livestock (chickens, cattle, goats and sheep) and other humans (siblings, mothers).

RESULTS: Among 287 C. jejuni isolates, 48 seven-gene sequence types (STs), including …

Your Data, Modern Times, And The Fourth Amendment: What Would Jefferson And Orwell Do?, Sterling, Ken

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

The ongoing challenge of balancing individual data privacy with the government's need for user data through national security efforts has long plagued courts and policymakers. This tension intensifies as technology advances, permeating daily life, and global uncertainty fuels government demand for additional data. This study explores this tension by examining the Fourth Amendment's protection against unreasonable searches and seizures in the context of user data obtained by the government through third-party providers. I argue that the Fourth Amendment provides a sufficient framework to balance these competing interests. While acknowledging the government's responsibility for national security, we contend that this does …

Antibiotic De-Escalation In The Intensive Care Unit: Rationale And Potential Strategies, Sarah Singer Matuszak, Lauren Kolodziej, Scott Micek, Marin Kollef May 2025

Antibiotic De-Escalation In The Intensive Care Unit: Rationale And Potential Strategies, Sarah Singer Matuszak, Lauren Kolodziej, Scott Micek, Marin Kollef

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Antibiotic de-escalation (ADE) is important to help optimize antibiotic use and balance the positive and negative effects of antimicrobial therapy. ADE should be performed promptly, and infections should be treated with the shortest course of antimicrobials as clinically feasible to avoid unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials. Several tools have been developed to increase efficient ADE, including rapid diagnostic tests (ex. multiplex PCR), MRSA nasal PCR/culture, and biomarkers. Multiplex PCR and MRSA nasal PCR/culture have been associated with reductions in inappropriate antibiotic use. Procalcitonin, a biomarker, has been associated with shorter antimicrobial durations in some studies; however, widespread use may be …
