The aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AaRSs) are an ancient family of structurally diverse enzymes that are divided into two major classes. The functionalities of most AaRSs are inextricably linked to their oligomeric states. While GluRSs were previously classified as monomers, the current investigation reveals that the form expressed in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a rotationally pseudosymmetrical homodimer featuring intersubunit tRNA binding sites. Both subunits display a highly bent, “pipe strap” conformation, with the anticodon binding domain directed toward the active site. The tRNA binding sites are similar in shape to those of the monomeric GluRSs, but are formed through an approximately 180-degree rotation …

Optimized Student Grouping For Enhanced Classroom Performance, Kathryn E. Reardon May 2025

Optimized Student Grouping For Enhanced Classroom Performance, Kathryn E. Reardon

Honors Theses

Effective grouping methods enhance classroom collaboration and allow for a student-centered teaching approach; however, traditional grouping methods are time-consuming, subjective, and can create inconsistent group dynamics. This project addresses these challenges by employing a data-driven approach to optimize student groups based on academic performance, behavior, attendance, language barriers, and teacher preferences. The minimum viable product is a web application with an algorithm-driven system to group students and a database storage for group results. During the initiation phase, a problem was defined with a proposed solution. During the planning phase, potential design choices and grouping methods were researched and assessed. During …

In a post-stipulation holdover for lease expiration, the tenant moved to stay execution of a warrant of eviction beyond the stipulated vacate date. The landlord opposed, arguing that RPAPL §753 imposed a one-year time bar on such relief. The court analyzed the statutory tension between RPAPL §§749(3), 753, and CPLR §2201, concluding that §749(3) governs post-issuance stays and lacks a temporal limit. It exercised discretion to extend the eviction stay until June 17, 2025, citing the tenant's health, minor children with educational needs, and lack of prejudice to the landlord. The decision clarifies that courts retain discretion under RPAPL §749(3) …

Lewy Body Disease (LBD) and Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) are synucleinopathies with distinct prognoses and neuropathologies, however, with overlapping clinical symptoms. Different disease characteristics are proposed to be determined by distinct conformations of alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregates, which can self-propagate and spread between cells via a prion-like mechanism. The goal of this study is to investigate whether α-syn aggregates amplified from brain and CSF samples of LBD and MSA patients using the Seed Amplification Assay (SAA) maintain α-Syn seeding properties similar to those of α-syn aggregates derived from patients' brains. To address this, SAA-amplified and un-amplified α-Syn aggregates from LBD and …

Exploring The International Terminology Associated With Nurses Caring For Neonates, Infants, Children, Young People And Their Families., Matt Carey, Jane Coad, Imelda Coyne, Suja Somanadhan, Sarah Neill

School of Nursing and Midwifery

The terminology used for Registered Nurses specializing in caring for neonates, infants, children, young people (CYP), and their families varies globally. While many countries’ nursing students qualify as “Registered Nurses” upon completion of undergraduate education, specialist titles like “Children’s Nurses” in the United Kingdom or “Pediatric Nurses” in Italy denote expertise in CYP care. In countries like the United States and Canada, neonatal and pediatric nursing specialization typically requires postgraduate study. However, there is limited evidence on the range of international terms for nurses in this field. This expert opinion paper presents the results from a scoping survey designed to …

Information security is a fundamental principle during data transmission. The main threat to information security is hacking. They are focusing on finding new techniques to breach encryption methods. Therefore, developing new approaches for hiding information against hacker attacks is a potential solution. Different steganography methods are available for hiding information, such as in texts, disk space, network packets, audio and images. In contrast to cryptography, which is concerned with data encryption. Steganography is the art of hiding transmitted information by using seemingly harmless carriers to hide the presence of information. Steganography is cost-effective and unrelated to hardware components. This study …

Understanding mechanisms of resistance to active therapies is crucial for developing more effective treatments. Here, we investigate resistance to anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF plus chemotherapy treatment in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients from the IMblaze370 trial (NCT02788279). While anti-VEGF does not select for secondary mutations, anti-EGFR leads to simultaneous mutations in EGFR and MAPK, but not PI3K pathway genes. Notably, we observe frequent acquired mutations in the EGFR extracellular but not intracellular domain and that patients with higher baseline expression of EGFR-ligands are prone to acquire resistant mutations. This data reveals a ligand-activated EGFR/MAPK-signaling dependency in CRC. We also observe enrichment for …

Normative Contestation In The International Order: Is China Remaking Global Governance?, Kal Raustiala

International Law Studies

This essay explores China’s approach to global order. China’s remarkable rise has coincided with increasing engagement with the institutions of global governance. These institutions—in particular the United Nations—make up the core of what U.S. leaders have often referred to as the liberal world order or the rules-based order. Many U.S. officials see China as a deep threat intent on challenging, and perhaps even seeking to replace, this rules-based order. This essay, however, makes the case that China’s near-term goals for global governance appear more modest. Much of China’s behavior within institutions such as the UN suggests that what it seeks …

Effective And Efficient Graph Foundation Model, Lecheng Kong May 2025

Effective And Efficient Graph Foundation Model, Lecheng Kong

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Graph data has emerged as a central component in numerous real-world applications, spanning recommender systems, drug discovery, social networking, and traffic forecasting. While traditional and modern graph learning techniques—ranging from graph kernels to Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and graph transformers—have achieved significant success, their task-specific nature and reliance on supervised learning limit their adaptability to new, unseen tasks. This rigidity becomes especially problematic in dynamic environments where retraining for every new task is costly and often infeasible. Inspired by the transformative impact of foundation models in natural language processing, this thesis explores the feasibility of developing a graph foundation model—a …

System Security Foundations For Ai-Enabled Systems, Yuhao Wu May 2025

System Security Foundations For Ai-Enabled Systems, Yuhao Wu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

AI is being deployed broadly, from conventional computing systems like IoT systems to more advanced agentic systems. It is shifting from being a specialized component responsible for specific functions to becoming the core of agentic systems, where it drives autonomous decision-making and task execution. These AI-enabled systems bring tremendous benefits. For example, large language models can interpret user intent, select appropriate tools, and access data to complete tasks with minimal human guidance. However, they also introduce new security, privacy, and safety risks. These risks arise not only from the models themselves but also from the broader system design and integration. …

Investigating Neural, Neurovascular, And Vascular Function: Insights From Imaging 5-Ht2ar Compounds, Optogenetic Motor Mapping, And Cross-Modal Functional Mapping, Jonah Aryeh Padawer-Curry May 2025

Investigating Neural, Neurovascular, And Vascular Function: Insights From Imaging 5-Ht2ar Compounds, Optogenetic Motor Mapping, And Cross-Modal Functional Mapping, Jonah Aryeh Padawer-Curry

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Understanding how brain activity relates to behavior and cognition remains a central challenge in neuroscience. Brain function emerges from interactions between electrical, chemical, and blood dynamics across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Capturing this complexity requires methods that assess both large-scale neurophysiological activity and precise, cell-type-specific processes. Widefield optical imaging (WFOI) enables high-resolution monitoring of cortical function by simultaneously measuring hemodynamic and calcium dynamics. WFOI is particularly valuable for studying psychedelics, which show therapeutic potential but may alter neurovascular coupling, complicating the interpretation of hemodynamic signals. Using WFOI, we examined the hallucinogenic 5-HT2A receptor agonist DOI in awake mice, revealing …

Murphy’S Canon: Leadership In The Age Of Uncertainty, Ray Forbes

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

How might the nefarious “Murphy’s Law,” allegedly created by a disgruntled American aerospace engineer in the 1950s, apply in today’s chaotic world? Just how applicable is the law now in a new era that has been characterized by the descriptive label of FUD, or Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt? This paper will explore the infamous Murphy adage, as well as describe who Murphy was and how he came to formulate his cheeky directive. Additionally, this piece will expand on Murphy’s original provocative rule, feature several versions of it, provide alternative formulations, and discuss how the law might be reinterpreted to more …

Let E/Q be an elliptic curve and let p be an odd prime of good reduction for E. Let K be an imaginary quadratic field satisfying the classical Heegner hypothesis and in which p splits. The goal of this paper is two-fold: (1) we formulate a p-adic BSD conjecture for the p-adic L-function LBDP p introduced by Bertolini–Darmon–Prasanna [Duke Math. J. 162 (2013), pp. 1033–1148]; and (2) for an algebraic analogue F BDP p of LBDP p , we show that the “leading coefficient” part of our conjecture holds, and that the “order of vanishing” part follows from the expected …

A Novel Way To Understand And Communicate The Burden Of Antipsychotic Prescribing For Adults Across Specialist Intellectual Disability Services In England And Wales: The Aphid Feasibility Study Protocol, Rohit Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

Background: The stopping overmedication of people with a learning disability, autism, or both (STOMP) programme was launched in 2016 in response to concerns about the over-prescribing of medication in people with intellectual disability. The programmes focus has been on the withdrawal of antipsychotic treatment for the individual person than the service or dosage optimisation. It could be that cumulative service level antipsychotic treatment converted and presented as chlorpromazine units could allow for comparison of services on how antipsychotic treatment is being utilised and allow for comparing of practices between services in different regions. The aim of this feasibility study is …

Psma-Expressing, Fluciclovine-Negative Vertebral Hemangioma, Azadeh Eslambolchi, Amin Haghighat Jahromi

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: False-positive findings in Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PSMA PET-CT) can complicate accurate staging of prostate cancer, especially in cases such as vertebral hemangiomas, a benign lesion of the spinal column. These ambiguities may result in unnecessary biopsies in patients with prostate cancer when PSMA PET findings are inconclusive.

CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 68-year-old male with prostate cancer who had a PSMA-expressing, fluciclovine-negative vertebral hemangioma.

CONCLUSION: This case highlights the role of fluciclovine PET-CT in distinguishing benign vertebral hemangiomas from prostate cancer metastases, improving diagnostic accuracy specifically in positive cases of PSMA PET-CT.

Restoring Context: Interdisciplinary Approaches To Art Conservation And Registration Challenges In Rural Museums, Jade Karas '25

Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium

A prevalent issue for museums in rural areas is a lack of reliable registration methods. This occurs for a number of reasons whether it be a lack of resources (human, financial, spacial, etc.) or the erosion of knowledge overtime due to cultural reliance on generational knowledge. Additionally, different registrars often develop new methods for inventory without leaving behind instructions, leading subsequent registrars to devise their own methods. These gaps in the registration process frequently result in “registration problems”, objects that don’t get properly inventoried and thus have little to no context for their origins. This thesis aims to fill in …
