The purpose of this study was to investigate the different levels of DNA extraction in thermally altered samples by comparing the InnoXtract and PrepFiler BTA extraction kits. PrepFiler BTA is a DNA extraction kit designed to use for bone samples which uses silica coated magnetic beads to extract DNA from powdered bone. InnoXtract is a specialized kit for bone samples which uses the same silica coated magnetic bead method for DNA extraction. Burned skeletal remains pose a challenge since high temperature exposure denatures the DNA and degrades DNA that can be extracted. For this experiment, porcine femurs were used as …

Researchers have conducted studies into how trace DNA behaves on certain surfaces such as fabric and wood. They have found that surfaces seem to have a significant influence on how much DNA is deposited and persists on the surface. The overall purpose of this project is to evaluate active gene expression in heart tissue samples infected by the Epstein-Barr virus. By cataloging active gene expression, one could elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underpin viral infection’s role in the development of heart pathology. This was accomplished by extracting nucleic acids from homogenized heart tissue samples, employing reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) to synthesize cDNA from extracted mRNA), and performing a qPCR to quantify the levels of gene expression from these cDNA samples. This report examines the relationship between Jibu franchises and the technology they rely upon to conduct their most critical business operations. Jibu’s Point of Sale (POS) System is the online platform where Jibu franchises track sales, inventory, production, and delivery. While Jibu franchises agree that this iteration of the POS is the best of the three previous technology systems, it still has significant limitations that affect its usability. The POS system is serviceable at tracking big picture numbers like total sales, customers, and liters sold. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are supermassive black holes that reside at galactic centers and are actively accreting matter. In approximately 10% of cases, AGN produce relativistic jets: collimated streams of particles that travel for thousands of light years and have been detected at TeV energies by ground-based gamma-ray observatories. However, the mechanisms that accelerate particles beyond the TeV scale are largely unknown. Currently, only 56 objects are confirmed to accelerate particles to these extreme energies. Here we provide a selection of over 150 sources that exhibit infrared (IR) and X-ray emission profiles similar to those of the 56 TeV sources. …

This thesis examines the history of how Black Mississippians in the greater Madison County area have conceptualized land ownership since circa 1970 in order to understand how acquiring land has historically been seen as a significant source of financial, social, and mental security for Black folks in rural Madison County. By looking at oral history interviews from mostly the Garrett family and other Black Madison County citizens and archival materials, one will see how connection to land and place—despite the land being listed under heirs’ property— is the underpinning of familial affinity and association. Using MAC Cosmetics' Viva Glam campaign as a case study, this research highlights how public relations tactics in the beauty industry have traditionally supported inclusive values, embracing representation across lines of color, gender, sexual orientation, and health. This research project examines the role of early church creeds as a safeguard within the ancient church and the modern church to fight heresy that was prevalent within the culture. It investigates the historical context of the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed, emphasizing how these creeds were used to drive out heretical beliefs such as Gnosticism and Arianism. This study argues that while these creeds successfully clarified and summarized the core doctrines of the Christian faith and drive out heretical teachings, they did not fully achieve lasting unity among the church and Christian groups. Purpose: This quality improvement project aims to (1) decrease time in restraint use on the inpatient psychiatric unit through implementing the restraint chair protocol, and (2) improve staff satisfaction in using safety restraint.

Background: In acute psychiatric care, restraints are used to ensure safety, but they pose physical and psychological risks. There is an increasing recognition of the need for patient safety, including the use of de-escalation techniques that prioritize restraint chairs over bed restraints to ensure safety.

Using a historical approach I examined race discourse within the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) between 1883 and 1982 to better understand how race concepts connect to the production of medical knowledge and ignorance; how they influenced the production of legal and medical policy; how they related to the production and maintenance of health injustice; and how oppressions and injustices are interrelated. I found a clear differentiation between Jim Crow era and post-Jim Crow race discourse. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are large-scale and long-duration electricity storage systems with decoupled energy and power units, granting them design flexibility. Despite their expanding applications, RFBs are still more expensive than competitive electricity storage systems due to the high cost of materials and relatively low power density. Hence, either the cost of materials must decrease through the development of cheaper materials with enhanced properties, or the power density must improve through efficient component design. This dissertation focuses on optimizing two main components of RFBs: ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) and flow field plates (FF plates). Air quality is a major health concern. Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) is a leading mortality risk factor across the world. Numerous cohort studies conducted over the past two decades have identified strong associations between ambient air pollution and human mortality, highlighting the adverse health effects of PM2.5 and NO2 exposure. Limited evidence exists on the efficiency of the sensory systems of children with sensory impairment. The purpose of this study was to examine the sensory systems involved in postural control of male children with hearing (HI) or visual impairments (VI) compared to those without HI or VI. Participants aged 9–13 years old (N = 45, M_age = 11.43, SD = 1.5) were placed within one of three equally stratified purposive groups (HI, VI, comparison children).
