Snapshots

The most recent OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey enables educators, policymakers and the wider community to compare Australian students with each other, as well as with their counterparts across the world. PISA measures the extent to which 15-year-old students near the end of compulsory education have acquired the knowledge and skills that young adults need to meet the challenges of the future. PISA also collects teacher questionnaire data to gain insights into teaching practices, learning activities and the school environment. Teacher self-efficacy refers to a teacher’s belief in their capability to help students learn and to influence …

Weaving An Alternative Food System: The Implications Of‬‭ Campesino‬‭ Community‬ Structures For Food Sovereignty In New England‬, Torrance Wagner May 2025

Weaving An Alternative Food System: The Implications Of‬‭ Campesino‬‭ Community‬ Structures For Food Sovereignty In New England‬, Torrance Wagner

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

This exploration seeks to detangle the diverse lines of thinking, reasoning, and acting that make up the concept of food sovereignty, and to do so with the intention of understanding what its most actionable principles are. The topic is inspired by the traditional community-scale agriculture of campesino communities throughout Latin America, but specifically in the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca, Mexico. The ultimate questions are if and how the collectivity that often exists in these cultures can be applied to local food systems in New England to support regional food sovereignty. The ideas presented are drawn from personal experience, theoretical academic …

Children As Legacy: Fostering A Viable, Interracial Future In Chesnutt’S The Marrow Of Tradition, Allison Marchand

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Charles W. Chesnutt believed The Marrow of Tradition (1901) would be his magnum opus. In a letter to Booker T. Washington, he described it as “by far the best thing I have done” and in another, described how he sent it to Theodore Roosevelt, hoping it might help the president understand the race problem (McElrath 159; 169). The novel details the events of and leading up to a race riot in the fictional Wellington, North Carolina. Inspired by the 1898 coup d’etat and massacre in Wilmington, North Carolina, Chesnutt wrote The Marrow of Tradition with “the hope that it might …

Design Of Silicon Grating Metasurfaces For Beam Deflecting In Solid-State Light Detecting And Ranging (Lidar), Matthew Baker

Honors Program Theses and Projects

My thesis begins with an overview of LiDAR (Light Detecting and Ranging) and theory for electromagnetic wave propagation. We establish problems that arise from the use of external beam steering components in LiDAR systems. As a possible solution, we introduce the concept of a metasurface with sub-wavelength dimensions. Grating metasurfaces utilize periodicity to change the phase gradient along a surface. Using a row of posts on a substrate, we can confine light towards one side of a structure, deflecting at angles towards a maximum angle determined by the structure’s geometry. These metasurfaces are small enough to be directly incorporated onto …

Pilot/ Validation Of Protocol For An Alternative To Clinical, Morgan Sylvester

Honors Theses

All across the country, Clinical Microbiology laboratories are being consolidated into one location for an entire hospital network10. Though this helps reduce cost and staffing needs, it creates issues for the next generation of Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) trying to find clinical sites to complete clinical practicum rotations to complete the necessary certification processes. To combat this issue, it was proposed that MLS programs create alternative curriculums to offer in place of clinical rotations to reduce the amount of time students need in these rotations from three weeks to one week. This study investigated one alternative with the intent that …

Faculty Research 2025

Gut dysbiosis is linked to mortality and the development of graft-versus-host disease after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but the impact of cutaneous dysbiosis remains unexplored. We performed a pilot observational study, obtained retroauricular and forearm skin swabs from 12 adult patients before conditioning chemotherapy/radiation and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after allogeneic HSCT, and performed shotgun metagenomic sequencing. The cutaneous microbiome among HSCT patients was enriched for gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas, fungi, and viruses. Enrichment with bacteriophages and Polyomavirus species was observed among patients who died within 1 year. We observed longitudinal …

Modeling Molten Lithium Carbonate As Pollutant Absorbing Agent, Lucian G. Forestieri May 2025

Modeling Molten Lithium Carbonate As Pollutant Absorbing Agent, Lucian G. Forestieri

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Coal burning generates gaseous pollutants that are toxic to local environments and human health, namely hydrochloric acid and sulfur dioxide ( HCl and SO2). Current methods for capturing these pollutants are flue gas desulfurization, which utilize solid or water- dissolved carbonates. This method, however, is inefficient mainly due to the product salts blocking further reactions. Molten carbonates may be a more efficient alternative. Experimental work cannot observe these reaction mechanisms, and the small number of current computational models do not match experimental properties. This work aims to develop a computational model of gaseous HCl scattering off the surface …

Automation Mismatch: How Contractor Ai Adoption Challenges Institutional Procurement Norms At U.S. Customs And Border Protection (Cbp), Farhan Bin Amjad

Beyond the Project Horizon: Journal of the Center for Project Management Innovation

This letter explores a growing strain in the U.S. federal procurement: the automation mismatch between AI-powered proposal development by contractors and the regulation-bound evaluation systems at agencies like U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Tools like Vultron and Unanet AI have enabled federal contractors to increase proposal submission volume, yet institutional constraints such as data sensitivity, budget limitations, and cultural barriers have hindered equivalent modernization on the government side. This article leverages institutional theory and prior research to analyze this disparity, highlighting how legal and cultural factors limit AI integration in procurement. Detailed analysis of these regulatory and cultural influences …

This fourth article in a seven part series presents the Core GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach to addressing risk of bias, publication bias, and rating up certainty. In Core GRADE, randomised controlled trials begin as high certainty evidence and non-randomised studies of interventions (NRSI) as low certainty. To assess certainty of evidence for risk of bias, Core GRADE users first classify individual studies as low or high risk of bias. Decisions regarding rating down for risk of bias will depend on the weights of high and low risk of bias studies and similarities or differences between …

On The Use Of Nonlinear Electrophoresis For Separating Particles And Cells In Insulator-Based Electrokinetic Systems, Alaleh Vaghef-Koodehi

Theses

The increasing demand for efficient separation processes of micron-sized particles, including microorganisms, highlights the importance of developing low-cost, non-labor-intensive, and time-efficient techniques. Insulator-based electrokinetic (iEK) systems have proven to be a practical alternative to bench-scale methodologies such as centrifugation and membrane filtration. Several studies have reported the separation of microparticles by employing direct current (DC) voltages. However, all of them have overlooked the phenomenon of nonlinear electrophoresis (EPNL) and its role in the electrokinetic migration of particles. This study combines mathematical modeling and experiments to extend the capabilities of iEK systems. This dissertation has four aims: (1) to separate microparticles …

Can Flywheel Training Serve As A Viable Intervention For Dynamic Strength Index Based Programs?, Jeffrey Ruiz

Doctorate in Kinesiology

The purpose of this case series was to examine the effects that flywheel training had on a person’s dynamic strength index in comparison to concurrent training (DSI). It has been shown that with strength training alone there can be an overall decrease in the DSI, due to an increase the IMTP peak force and no significant change in the CMJ performance (Comfort et al., 2018). Flywheel training’s effect on the DSI specifically have not been previously examined. It was hypothesized that a regimented flywheel training intervention will demonstrate an

improvement in the peak force for the countermovement jumps as well …
