Wildfires serve a paradoxical role in landscapes—supporting biodiversity and nutrient cycling while also threatening ecosystems and economies, especially as climate change intensifies their frequency and severity. This study investigates the impact of wildfires and vegetation recovery in the Bosco Difesa Grande forest in southern Italy, focusing on the 2017 and 2021 fire events. Using Google Earth Engine (GEE) accessed in January 2025, we applied remote sensing techniques to assess burn severity and post-fire regrowth. Sentinel-2 imagery was used to compute the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI); burn severity was derived from differenced NBR (dNBR), and …

I started teaching ELE 452 Antennas course for engineering undergraduates in the spring of 2022. As a strong advocate of active learning techniques, I was incorporating antenna simulations using a software called ANSYS-HFSS. HFSS has a lot of moving parts hence I needed a method to make sure the students follow the steps correctly, so I created worksheets with step-by-step instructions. Since I put a lot of time and effort into creating these worksheets, I published those as an open source digital collection via the USM Libraries. Currently, the readership of these worksheets is almost 4000 worldwide.

Occupancy and N-mixture analyses have been successfully used to understand habitat use in various species. However, since these methods fundamentally answer different questions about wildlife distribution, the results from each modelling approach may provide different insights into species’ habitat use. In this study, we leveraged data from a long-term camera trapping study in northeastern Türkiye to compare the results from occupancy and N-mixture analyses, with the main objective of understanding how the modelling approach used can influence our knowledge of species’ habitat use. The quality improvement project aimed to enhance compliance with the project site’s policy on participation in shared governance by providing an educational session on the importance of shared governance to faculty roles. Literature reviews revealed that shared governance increases faculty voice and satisfaction with their roles. By educating faculty about the role of shared governance and how to engage in institutional shared governance policies, both the institution and the faculty can benefit from more effective participation, leading to the continuous improvement of the program and incorporation of evidence-based practices into the curriculum. Recent trends of intense forest fires in the Korean Peninsula have increased concerns about more extreme burning in the future under a warming climate. Accurate and reliable fire weather information has become more critical to reduce the risk of forest-related disasters over complex terrain. In this study, two parameterizations reflecting complex topographic effects were implemented in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The model performance was evaluated over the mountainous region in Gangwon-do, South Korea’s most significant forest area. A deep learning model is often considered a black-box model, as its internal workings tend to be opaque to the user. Because of the lack of transparency, it is challenging to understand the reasoning behind the model’s predictions. Here, we present an approach to making a deep learning-based solar storm prediction model interpretable, where solar storms include solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This deep learning model, built based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network with an attention mechanism, aims to predict whether an active region (AR) on the Sun’s surface that produces a flare within 24 hours …

Tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes or typhoons, are defined as organized storm systems that form in the warm waters around the equator (NOAA, 2024). This happens due to the combination of warm waters, light winds, and preexisting weather conditions. In the last 50 years, tropical cyclones have accounted for approximately 800,000 deaths and an economic loss of $1.4 trillion USD due to their resulting damages (WMO, 2024). Morphological And Immunohistochemical Support For The Origin Of The Carcinoid Component In Strumal Carcinoids: A Case Report And Literature Review, Yu Liu, Asra Feroze, Liz Yang, Ridin Balakrishnan

Strumal carcinoid tumors of the ovary are rare neoplasms composed of an intimate mixture of thyroid and carcinoid tissues. Although various theories regarding their histogenesis have been proposed, evidence confirming the origin of the carcinoid component has been lacking. We report a case of a 40-year-old female with an ovarian strumal carcinoid arising in the background of a mature cystic teratoma. Morphological and immunohistochemical findings support the hypothesis that the carcinoid component originates from the thyroid follicular epithelium, undergoing neuroendocrine differentiation. A single-cell growth pattern was also identified, expanding the known histological spectrum of strumal carcinoids. Our case provides additional …

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread public health concern that disproportionately affects women, particularly those belonging to minorities. In the United States, the prevalence of IPV among Latina women is influenced by intersecting factors such as immigration status, socioeconomic stressors, cultural values, and systemic barriers. Research and community initiatives addressing IPV among Latina women have included crisis hotlines, domestic violence shelters, advocacy programs, and bilingual services within community health centers. Research also highlights that culturally tailored services yield better outcomes than trauma-informed approaches alone.

The Performance Diagnostic Checklist – Human Services (PDC-HS) is an assessment tool used to identify factors influencing employee performance in human service settings. Although prior research supports its effectiveness in identifying performance barriers, little is known about the accuracy of the intervention selection process. This study examined the accuracy with which participants scored the PDC-HS and selected appropriate interventions. In Study 1, 23 participants watched video vignettes of mock PDC-HS interviews, completed the assessment, and identified indicated domains and interventions. Scoring accuracy was consistent with prior research, but intervention selection accuracy was highly variable, with most errors occurring in the …
