While solar energy adoption has been growing rapidly across the United States, access to its benefits remains uneven. In Washington State, low-income households and marginalized communities often face significant barriers to participation in the clean energy transition. These include high upfront installation costs, limited financing options, and legal frameworks that fail to account for renters, multi-family dwellings, and communities without suitable rooftops. Additionally, outdated net metering policies and restrictive utility regulations further limit solar accessibility for those already burdened by energy insecurity. The laws governing the repair of medical devices, most notably §1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), place unnecessary and harmful restrictions on healthcare access in the United States. As hospitals increasingly rely on complex medical technologies, manufacturers have relied on anti-circumvention laws to block independent and in-house repairs, effectively monopolizing the repair market. As a result, our current system is one that delays treatment, inflates costs, and leaves healthcare providers and consumers with fewer options during times of crisis and routine care alike. This dissertation explores the intersection of algorithmic jewelry design, digital fabrication, and cultural memory. By integrating parametric modeling software such as Rhino and Grasshopper with traditional lost-wax casting methods, this research creates a dialogue between historical Persian geometric patterns and contemporary wearable art. Through this hybrid approach, the work contributes to contemporary jewelry discourse, demonstrating how ancient motifs can be algorithmically reinterpreted into innovative, culturally resonant forms. representation. Filmmakers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay

depict the political upheavals of the time, including the rise of leftist movements,

military regimes, and the influence of liberation theology, a progressive religious

ideology advocating for the oppressed. The study focuses on what is defined here

People with aphasia (PWA) experience deficits in utilizing prosody, which drastically impacts their communicative effectiveness. The lack of prosody in people with aphasia may alter their ability to nurture meaningful relationships, advance educational and work opportunities, and participate in community activities. This study acoustically evaluates the prosodic characteristics of speech produced by individuals with non-fluent aphasia to better understand how to accurately assess and more effectively treat communication difficulties in PWA. Recorded speech samples derived from a Cinderella story retell from 16 individuals with moderate Broca's aphasia and 16 age-matched controls were acoustically analyzed in this study. Loneliness is an immense challenge facing the majority of Americans with Serious Mental Illness. Loneliness is linked to negative outcomes, including heart disease, reduced quality of life, and early mortality. Current loneliness interventions (e.g., social skills training, social support) do not effectively address all the complex factors that lead to loneliness in this population. Sickle cell trait (SCT), the heterozygous form of sickle cell disease, has significant implications for health and reproductive decision-making. Timely disclosure of SCT status to children by their caregivers is critical for promoting genetic awareness and supporting informed reproductive choices. However, many caregivers delay or avoid this conversation. This study examined the psychosocial and behavioral factors influencing caregivers’ intentions to disclose SCT status to their children, guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Theory of Regret Regulation. Szab`o et al. [4] show that universal quantum cloning machines may be used to manipulate entanglement between bipartite states. Entanglement is measured with concurrence, C, and it is shown that as the fidelity of the cloner improves, more entanglement transfers from the reference to the cloned state. This thesis characterizes the nature of this entanglement transfer by analyzing the entanglement distribution of the cloner. In this analysis we will show that entanglement is generally destroyed after cloning except in cases where there is no cloning, two identical qubits are created, or there is complete qubit transfer. Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a pattern-recognition transmembrane receptor that induces neuroinflammatory processes in response to injury. Tlr4 is highly expressed in ocular tissues and is known to modulate inflammatory processes in both anterior and posterior segment tissues. TLR4 activation can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic deficits in inflammatory disorders. Due to its effects on inflammation and metabolism, TLR4 is a candidate to participate in glaucoma pathogenesis. It has been suggested as a therapeutic target based on studies using acute models, such as experimentally raising IOP to ischemia-inducing levels. Nevertheless, …

This study focuses on the organization of architectural labor at Betatakin and Keet Seel during the Tsegi Phase (AD 1250-1300). The goal of this project is to identify whether people worked together as households, suprahouseholds, communities, or had specialists come in to build. I document variability in architectural attributes across rooms within individual houses, which is then linked to builder choices, and thus allows for the identification of architectural products associated with discrete production groups. Context Ecological functions provided by fire refugia are critical for supporting conifer forest resiliency under increased fire activity across the western United States. The spatial distribution and persistence of fire refugia over time are uncertain as fire-injured trees continue to die over subsequent years post-fire. Objectives We examined how post-fire delayed tree mortality affects the spatial distribution and attributes of fire refugia at patch and landscape scales following high-severity wildfires. The effect of coarse aggregate (CA) on the stability and mechanical performance of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) was investigated. To assess UHPC stability, a unique approach was developed that utilizes specially fabricated large specimens with a depth of 400 mm. It overcomes the drawback of limited CA migration distance using small specimens, which may not replicate conditions relevant to structural applications. The spatial distributions of various constituents along the vertical casting direction were quantified through image processing technology. Results showed an approximately 12 % reduction in CA content in the top layer, while the bottom layer exhibited 12 % more CA …

Michigan is known as the Great Lakes State: Daily life, the economy, recreation, agriculture, and more are influenced and even defined by the abundance of waterways all around. Lulled into complacency by the seeming excess of water, residents, business owners, politicians, and tourists all likely believe that the Great Lakes are inexhaustible. Elsewhere, extended droughts brought on by climate change deplete traditional sources of water, even while the demand for it grows, in industry, agriculture, and the municipal water supply for developing communities.

This article argues that criminal law has overtaken immigration law to such an extent that the notion of “crimmigration” is no longer shocking. In Canada, where the population has long been supportive of immigration and where national politics have been remarkably consensual in matters of immigration, crimmigration now forms the basis of a new form of bipartisan consensus. By looking back on the Justin Trudeau Liberal government, we see that most of the Harper-era crimmigration measures were left in place, and the advance of crimmigration continued unabated. Jarring events inspiring reflection, known as "shocks" in the literature, are the driving force in explaining changes in employee embeddedness and retention within the unfolding model of labor turnover. Substantial research effort has examined strategies for insulating valued employees from adverse shocks. However, this article provides empirical evidence that unambiguously negative shocks can increase employee retention when underlying firm and employee incentives with respect to these shocks are aligned. Using survival analysis on a unique data set of 466,236 communication records and 45,873 employment spells from 21 trucking companies, we show how equipment-related shocks tend to increase the duration of …

[Objective ] The aim of this study is to explore the effects of dextran with a small molecular weight (SDex ) on the viability of intestinal microorganisms.[Method ] The probiotic effects of laboratory-designed SDex containing only α-1,6 glycosidic bonds was evaluated by in vitro fermentation with nine typical intestinal strains,including strains from the genera Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus,as well as species such as Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis.The microbial proliferation and organic acid production during fermentation were compared among SDex,commercial dextran 20 (Dex 20),and isomalto-oligosaccharides (IMOs ).[Result ] SDex and IMOs significantly promoted the proliferation of probiotics such as Bifidobacterium and …
