Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the way medical students seek residency positions. In 2020, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education advocated for virtual interviews. Most emergency medicine (EM) interviews in 2023 remained virtual, and this format will persist for the foreseeable future. Since students are not evaluating programs in person in most cases, residency websites are crucial for prospective residents. Resident wellness is critical for resident training and important to prospective residents; it follows that programs must be transparent about resident wellness on websites. This article is an autoethnography of my experiences in blind education. Covering the years from 1962-1977, this autoethnography compares my two years in public school education as a person with a visual impairment to my 12 years at a boarding school specifically designed for the visually impaired. The IDEA framework for disability education was developed in 1964 and I spent my early years of blindness educated under a program of that design with itinerant special education teachers. We explored the possibility that different loci of feedback in Elman networks (which have a limited memory 'context' based on previous hidden unit states) and Jordan networks (where context is based on previous output states) produce qualitatively different behaviors. These different kinds of context could theoretically yield qualitatively different outcomes, although we expected outcomes to be similar. We trained Elman networks and Jordan networks to activate the current word based on a sequence of phonemes. With a moderately sized lexicon (1000 words), training outcomes were highly similar, with high accuracy and patterns of activation and competition over time that resemble …

This dissertation argues that Christian theology and practice are aided and enriched by a more complete understanding of reason by surveying recent studies and views in theology, philosophy, cognitive psychology, and cognitive linguistics. Since the Enlightenment, Christian theology has assumed widely the Enlightenment model of human reason as ideally acontextual, that is, free from constraints of contexts, and therefore universal, that is, applicable in all contexts. Recent developments from a variety of perspectives challenge this model of rationality. California’s kelp forests are some of the most biodiverse and productive ecosystems on the planet. Centuries of anthropogenic degradation via habitat destruction and climate change have culminated in decreased kelp forest habitat at an accelerated rate since at least the 1850s (Scarborough et al. 2022; Rogers-Bennett & Catton, 2019; Kumagai et al. 2024; Smith et al. 2023). This study synthesizes major threats, past and present, to California’s kelp forests, including the overharvesting of multiple species, pollution from coastal development, and climate change impacts. Water scarcity is increasing in California, so we need strategies to reduce potable water demand. Decentralized greywater systems offer promising solutions to this problem. This study provides a roadmap for successfully implementing greywater reuse at the University of San Francisco (USF) by addressing financial, technical, and regulatory considerations. By deploying a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative expert interviews and quantitative water usage analysis, policy review, cost analysis, and case studies, this study established USF’s annual recycled water demand as 8 million gallons, with two primary uses: irrigation, which accounts for 67% of the demand, and toilet-urinal flushing, which represents …

The incidence of right heart failure (RHF) during durable left ventricular assist device (LVAD) surgery ranges from 9% to 42%, depending on the definition. RHF can be divided into three peri-implantation categories: early acute, early, and late. Despite many available risk models, predicting RHF before durable LVAD implantation has been difficult. Preemptive right-sided temporary mechanical circulatory support can improve outcomes; however, if intraoperative RHF is not suspected, early recognition and appropriate intervention after surgery are important.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect endodontic access preparation had on the retention of anterior zirconia crowns after restoring the access hole with temporary versus permanent restorative materials. Methods: 30 anterior zirconia crowns were milled from 5Y-TZP zirconia and bonded to a 3D printed die with resin cement. Crowns were randomly divided into three groups including negative control (NC, n = 10) with no endodontic access preparation; positive control (PC, N = 10) received endodontic access preparation and was restored with a temporary restorative material (Cavit); composite restoration (CR, N = 10) received an endodontic access preparation and then the access …

Nationwide teacher shortages have resulted in states utilizing alternative certification programs to recruit, attract, and retain teacher candidates. The problem was secondary principals are challenged to assist novice alternatively certified teachers (NACTs) in the United States. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore experienced secondary principals' perspectives on their successes and challenges to assist NACTs. Experiential learning theory served as the basis for the conceptual framework. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences, cognitions, and perceived self-efficacies of high school English language development (ELD) teachers in providing literacy instruction to adolescent multilingual learners (MLs). The study focused on three subpopulations of adolescent MLs, including students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE), experienced MLs who have been in U.S. schools for more than five years, and traditional MLs who have been in U.S. schools for fewer than five years and who have not had gaps in their prior education. This literature review and manual will explore gender differences in the manifestation of depression symptoms, as well as the link between depression and anger in adolescent males. This study researched the six elements of the Holistic Framework for Professional Development (HFPD) to understand administrators’ and teachers’ perceived importance and how demographic variables impacted those perceptions. This was done to contribute to the current gap in the literature regarding how to design and carry out effective professional development. The quantitative survey research utilized exponential, non-discriminative snowball sampling to recruit participants. Fifteen administrators, 64 teachers, and six participants working in ‘other’ roles in their school participated. This study examined how social media is influencing clinical practice trends and evidence-based decision-making in speech-language pathology (SLP). A mixed-methods study including a survey (98 participants) to assess social media’s impact on SLP practices in the tri-state area (Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota), as well as a focus group (five participants) was used.

This qualitative study examines the role of teacher-student relationships grounded in the Social Learning Theory, Social Support Theory, as well as the Attachment Theory. The research explored how teachers perceive, establish, and maintain supportive relationships with their students, and how these relationships contribute to student engagement and academic motivation. Fifteen first-grade teachers from elementary schools participated in semi-structured interviews, sharing personal insights and practices around relationship building.
