Stress-Related Phenotypic Differentiation Identified By Motivational Behaviors In Male Mice, Renee A. Brummels

Social stress substantially contributes to psychological disorders, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Recognizing these disorders affect millions, it is essential to understand social stress’s impacts on behavior and how these behaviors vary among affected populations. We address these questions through a social defeat/avoidance paradigm, the Stress-Alternatives Model (SAM), which demonstrates defeat (Stay) and avoidance (Escape) responses across species, including fish, rats, hamsters, and mice. Avoidance of social conflict in the SAM is possible by utilizing escape routes for smaller test mice during aggressive interactions. Additionally, measurements of SAM motivational behaviors, like time near and nose pokes into escape …

This shift creates tension for Jesuit schools, which emphasize a transformational approach to education rooted in ethical leadership, critical thinking, and social responsibility. Annie’s Project, is a nationally recognized educational program for women farmers focused on five areas of risk management: marketing, production, financial, human, and legal. Some challenges are common to all farms, while some are unique to urban locations. We added urban-focused topics including short-term leases, contaminated soils, water availability, indoor production, and access to capital and resources to develop Annie’s Project: Farming in Cities and the Urban Fringe. As urbanization spreads and a greater percentage of farmers across the United States are women, our curriculum can be used to address needs that are unique to farmers in urban …

Analyzing Immigrant Pay Gaps & The Policies That Influence Them, Rebeca Perez, Prachi Jain

Honors Thesis

Despite making up 14% of the US population, little research has been done on pay gaps for immigrants, the majority of whom are Latin American immigrants. I analyze the effect of immigration on immigrants’ wages, specifically looking at the effects of region of birth, citizenship, and state immigration policies. I find that even when compared to natives with similar education, Latin American immigrants earn significantly less. Furthermore, while noncitizens earn less than natives and naturalized citizens earn more overall, Latin Americans face a larger penalty for noncitizenship and lower returns to citizenship. The impact of pesticides on farmworkers is at the intersection of environmental and labor law. Existing federal regulations designed to protect farmworkers from pesticide exposure and illness have failed to adequately do so. While some states have tried to fill these gaps by enacting state regulations, New Mexico is not one of them. However, by borrowing and combining regulatory protections from other states, New Mexico could become a leader in this area. This note first provides a detailed summary of the federal protections and the regulatory history while summarizing criticisms from farmworker advocates. The shift to a low-carbon economy will require a massive build out of low-carbon technologies, which in turn will require millions of new laborers with specific skills. Similarly, the decline of fossil-fuel industries will require retraining and new job opportunities for laborers in these fields. At the same time, there is an emerging scholarly focus on a “just transition” to a low-carbon economy. This essay conceptualizes inclusive workforce development as a key component of a just transition. This study examines how elite independent private schools (EIPSs), traditionally associated with privilege, prestige, and exclusivity, articulate their commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within a highly competitive market. Using Critical Race Theory and Neoinstitutional Theory, this mixed-methods study employs critical discourse analysis (CDA) and corpus linguistics (CL) to explore underlying forces contributing to the observed disjuncture between the ostensive and performative aspects of EIPSs’ DEI efforts. Using the publicly available diversity statements of 31 Bay Area EIPSs, findings reveal that the DEI discourse among these elite schools often reflects market-oriented institutional logics. As human activities continue to accelerate the extinction of species, federal and state programs emerge as some of the last solutions to wildlife protection in the United States. Since the establishment of the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”) in 1973, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (“the Service”) has designated occupied and unoccupied critical habitats for threatened and endangered species as part of the species’ recovery plan. A recent U.S. Supreme Court case signaled that courts are less willing to grant the Service the same deference to designate areas as critical habitats as before. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (“RECA”), which offers one-time payments to designated individuals who have developed specific diseases and cancers due to radiation exposure, was set to expire on June 10, 2024. On March 7, 2024, the U.S. Senate passed Senate Bill 3853 (“S. 3853”), the “Radiation Exposure Compensation Reauthorization Act” which would continue RECA payments for an additional six years and would allow for more individuals to be eligible for these payments. Tacrolimus is the most commonly used immunosuppression drug after solid organ transplantation; however, its dosing is challenging due to substantial inter-individual variability, often resulting in blood levels that deviate from the target therapeutic range. We explored whether a dynamically customized, phenotypic-outcome-guided drug dosing method could improve maintenance of drug trough levels within pre-determined target ranges, focusing on tacrolimus immediately after liver transplantation. This single-center, partially blinded, completed clinical trial involved 62 adults undergoing liver transplantation, block randomized into parallel groups: standard-of-care (SOC) clinician-determined or Phenotypic Personalized Medicine (PPM)-guided tacrolimus dosing. This systematic review aimed to investigate the relationship between female genital mutilation (FGM) and infertility. Online databases were systematically searched up to January 2024 using MeSH keywords to retrieve relevant observational studies. The methodological quality of the analytical cross-sectional studies was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Pooled odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated, and a random-effects meta-analysis was used to address any heterogeneity. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was performed. A total of 5 analytical cross-sectional studies involving 37,146 participants, with 3 studies meeting the criteria for the meta-analysis. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the knowledge of Omani women of childbearing age concerning infant developmental care. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1,006 Omani women of childbearing age, recruited from outpatient clinics at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (response rate = 71%). Their knowledge was evaluated using the Knowledge of Infant Development Inventory (KIDI), a validated self-report questionnaire. The KIDI scores were analysed to identify associations with demographic variables such as women’s age, education level, employment status and number of children. Symmetrical peripheral gangrene (SPG) is an exceptionally uncommon complication of malaria, predominantly linked with Plasmodium falciparum and mixed infections. We report a 41-year-old female who presented to a tertiary care centre of eastern India in 2022 with complaint of fever with chills and rigor for 4 days along with pain and acrocyanosis of distal portions of bilateral upper and lower limbs for last 2 days. Investigations revealed anaemia and neutrophilic leucocytosis with thrombocytopaenia. This study evaluated the effects of magnesium (Mg) supplementation on glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus through a meta-analysis of 23 randomised controlled trials involving 1,345 participants. Mg supplementation significantly increased serum Mg levels (weighted mean difference [WMD] = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.32 to 1.06) and reduced fasting blood glucose levels (WMD = -0.58, 95% CI: -0.87 to -0.28). However, the impact on glycated haemoglobin was minimal (WMD = -0.16, 95% CI: -0.32 to 0.00). Subgroup analysis showed a greater reduction in glycated haemoglobin among participants aged ≥65 years and those receiving longer durations of supplementation. Additionally, Mg supplementation …

Income volatility resulting from crop loss presents a significant threat to rural livelihoods in India, where nearly half of the workforce is employed in agriculture. This study examines the causal impact of crop insurance uptake on farm income using nationally representative data from the 70th and 77th rounds of the National Sample Survey, merged with satellite-derived climate data and Harmful Degree Days (HDD), which is used as a proxy for crop-damaging temperature. To address selection bias in insurance enrollment, Propensity Score Matching, Inverse Propensity Weighting, and a Two-Way Fixed Effects model are used. In Kenya, statistics show that at least one in ten girls who are of the age of puberty miss school during their menstruation hindering their ability to finish schooling, secure a stable employment, and live independently. This thesis aims to highlight the issue of girls missing school due to their menstrual cycle, a problem that persists globally despite being solvable.
