Background/objectives: Diet quality and sleep regularity both influence cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and may influence each other, but there is scarce evidence for their joint or interacting associations in relation to CVD. We assessed these associations in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

Methods: Participants free of CVD with valid diet and sleep measures in 2010-2013 were included and followed through 2020 for detection of incident CVD (188 events detected over 8.8 years among 1782 participants; 55% women). Sleep timing and duration regularity were assessed via the intra-individual SD of sleep onset time and duration across 5- to 7-day actigraphy. …

Biliary atresia (BA) is a pediatric liver disease that often necessitates parenteral nutrition (PN) to support growth due to impaired liver function. While soy-based lipid emulsions (SLE) are commonly used in PN, they may contribute to cholestatic liver injury. In contrast, mixed lipid emulsions (MLE) show promise in preventing cholestasis in infants without BA, potentially by restoring bile flow. However, their effectiveness in patients of complete bile duct obstruction, as seen in BA, remains uncertain. Asbestosis is a prototypical type of fibrosis that is progressive and does not resolve. ER stress is increased in multiple cell types that contribute to fibrosis; however, the mechanism(s) by which ER stress in lung macrophages contributes to fibrosis is poorly understood. Here, we show that ER stress resulted in protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK; Eif2ak3) activation in humans with asbestosis. Similar results were seen in asbestos-injured mice. Mice harboring a conditional deletion of Eif2ak3 were protected from fibrosis. Lung macrophages from asbestosis individuals had evidence of metabolic reprogramming to fatty acid oxidation (FAO). Background: Only half of individuals with suspected rare diseases receive a genetic diagnosis following genomic testing. A genetic diagnosis allows access to appropriate care, restores reproductive confidence and reduces the number of potentially unnecessary interventions. A major barrier is the lack of disease agnostic functional tests suitable for implementation in routine diagnostics that can provide evidence supporting pathogenicity of novel variants, especially those refractory to RNA sequencing.

Kinases regulate cellular processes and are essential for understanding cellular function and disease. To investigate the regulatory state of a kinase, numerous methods have been developed to infer kinase activities from phosphoproteomics data using kinase-substrate libraries. However, few phosphorylation sites can be attributed to an upstream kinase in these libraries, limiting the scope of kinase activity inference. Moreover, inferred activities vary across methods, necessitating evaluation for accurate interpretation. Here, we present benchmarKIN, an R package enabling comprehensive evaluation of kinase activity inference methods. Excessive sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption poses a significant public health concern, particularly among historically marginalized populations targeted by industry marketing. This study compares the effectiveness of empowerment-based versus fear-based messaging on individual sugary beverage consumption intention and critical health literacy among Latinas aged 18 to 29 years (N = 231). Participants were randomized online to view either an empowerment-based video highlighting the risks of sugary beverage consumption and the beverage industry’s manipulative practices or a usual care fear-based video centering on individual behaviors and risks. Records for 45 centipede species occurring in Illinois are given with a brief discussion of general habitat features and the effects of certain environmental factors on specific distribution patterns. The chilopod fauna of Illinois includes species from southeastern, western, and northern physiographic regions and represents a richer mixture of chilopod species than is found in any adjacent state.

The white pine sawfly, Neodiprion pirletunl. is monophagous on eastern white pine, Pinus strobus, throughout its range in eastern North America. Localized outbreaks occur frequently, and small areas of white pine may be killed. The high population upsurge in Crawford County. Wisconsin, in 1978 was mitigated by the eulophid egg parasite, Closterocerus cinctipennis, when a mean 90.1 t 4.870 parasitization occurred. Larval parasitization in the Grant County infestation averaged 45.05%. and involved the ichneumonid, Olesicampe lophyri, the perilampid Perilamplts l~yalirllcs, and the tachinid Spathimeigenia erecta.

PETE (Predictive Extension Timing Estimator) model output for Grapholitha molesta (Busck) was within ca. 30 ? 46 degree-days or 1.4 2 2 days of predicting 50% adult moth activity as measured by pheromone trap catches in the spring and first summer generation in both Michigan apple and California Peach orchards. In subsequent summer generations. model output was less reliable.

Two colonies of forest tent caterpillar were reared at different densities on trembling aspen foliage in an environment chamber programmed for natural temperatures. Based on direct observation of molting, both colonies underwent five instars which overlapped negligibly in head width. Instar head widths were relatively stable between colonies, but individual biomass was sensitive to the different densities. Instars 3-5 in the less dense colony were heavier than those of the more dense by factors of 1.3-1.9. Development to 10-20% of larvae spinning cocoons took 40 days in the less dense colony and 45 days in the more dense. Size of …

The migration of the alfalfa weevil, clover leaf weevil and clover root curculio from aestivation sites into adjacent alfalfa fields was monitored with several different trapping systems. It was found that the initial dispersal back into alfalfa fields following aestivation was a slow gradual movement across the soil surface with flight occurring only after the insects had been in the alfalfa for several days.

The slender seedcorn beetle, Clirina impressijirons, is known to attack germinating corn seed, but field and laboratory studies of its life history indicate it may sometimes play a beneficial role. Feeding studies show that adults and larvae are primarily carnivorous but will feed on corn seed when their primary food is absent or in short supply. Certain behavioral aspects indicate that populations of this beetle might be attracted to selected agricultural areas where adults and larvae could serve as predators of soil pests of corn. The seasonal flight patterns of 35 species and subspecies of Pentatomoidea collected in window traps in a North Carolina black walnut plantation are discussed. Flying height distributions and seasonal activities of the five species that were most frequently collected (i.e., Amnestus basidentatus, A. pallidus, A. spinifrons, Brochymena qltadripustulata and Euschistus servus) are considered in detail.
