The Routledge Handbook of Cultural Ecosystem Services provides an overview of Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES), which are the nonmaterial aspects of benefits that people derive from nature. These diverse and multifaceted contributions can include experiences, capabilities, and identities, among others. The Handbook addresses how these CES are valued, how they reflect human–nonhuman relationships, and what roles they can play in improved human well-being, ecosystem management, and trajectories towards sustainability.

The role of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in combination with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for the treatment of large vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke has been evaluated exclusively outside the US, in randomized clinical trials which failed to demonstrate non-inferiority of skipping IVT. Because practice patterns and IVT dosing differ within the US, and prior observational US-based cohorts suggested improved clinical outcomes in patients who received IVT before EVT, a US-based evaluation is needed. This is a quasi-experimental study of a large US cohort using a regression discontinuity design (RDD) that enables the estimation of causal effects when randomization is not feasible. …

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the incidence trends of female breast cancer (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) among women in Iraq and their relation to fertility patterns. Methods: This retrospective study utilised the Iraqi Cancer Registry annual reports for the years 2012–2022 and the World Bank data for Iraqi crude birth rate and total fertility data for the years 1992–2002. Simple linear regression analysis examined the relationship between these variables and incidence rates of BC and OC. Results: A total of 63,446 women were newly diagnosed with BC from 2012–2022. Background/Objectives: Sepsis is a costly and life-threatening condition caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Lack of a reliable, timely diagnostic for sepsis leads to under- and overdiagnosis, suboptimal outcomes, and strained hospital resources. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center (OLOLRMC) implemented a sepsis learning health program to evaluate and improve outcomes through standardized ED workflows and the incorporation of a novel sepsis diagnostic test. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures, affecting millions worldwide. While anti-seizure medications serve as first-line treatment, approximately one-third of patients develop drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), necessitating alternative interventions. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a promising therapy for DRE, particularly for patients who are ineligible for resective surgery. DBS involves stereotactic implantation of electrodes into target brain regions, such as the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT), centromedian nucleus (CMT), and hippocampus (HC), to modulate aberrant neural activity and to reduce seizure frequency. Classical Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly curable malignancy, but long-term treatment-related toxicities remain a challenge, especially in young survivors. In recent years, treatment has shifted from traditional doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine regimens to novel approaches such as positron emission tomography-guided therapy, brentuximab vedotin-doxorubicin, vinblastine, dacarbazine (AVD), and checkpoint inhibitor combinations such as nivolumab (Nivo)-AVD. This review evaluates these three frontline strategies in terms of efficacy, toxicity, and their potential to personalize treatment and minimize late complications. Drawing from trials such as ECHELON-1, NIVAHL, SWOG S1826, and BREACH, we analyze current evidence, evaluate conflicting data, and propose considerations for tailoring …

Immigrants from Cameroon residing in the United States are at risk of mental and psychological distress; however, very few of these immigrants seek appropriate treatment for their existing mental health conditions. Limited research exists on this population’s experiences of mental health care access in the United States. This qualitative study aimed to improve understanding of the mental health care access experience of immigrants from Cameroon residing in the United States. In this work, we provide a concise proof of the logarithmic derivative lemma in Cⁿ. We start by giving a complete proof of a critical result by Biancofiore and Stoll (Ann. of Math. Stud., No. 100, 29–45, 1981) via matrix theory, which is central to this area of study. Then, we follow Li (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, 6257–6267, 2011) and Ye (Math. Z. 222, 81–95, 1996) to present the shortest proof to date.

Copyright law requires courts deciding music infringement cases to locate two copyrights within a single song: one in the “musical work” and another in the “sound recording.” But songs do not naturally divide into such pieces. Instead, judges untrained in music must parse from a unified song the musical elements belonging to each copyright and to whom those copyrights belong. They have historically approached the task as a simple matter of identifying elements notated on a score as belonging to the musical work and placing “everything else” on the sound recording, but such a formalistic approach does not suit the …

Intracellular calcium (Ca²⁺) release via phospholipase C (PLC) following G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) activation is typically linked to membrane depolarization and airway smooth muscle (ASM) contraction. However, recent findings show that bitter taste receptor agonists, such as chloroquine (CQ), induce a paradoxical and potent relaxation response despite activating the Ca²⁺ signaling pathway. This relaxation has been hypothesized to be driven by a distinct compartmentalization of calcium ions toward the cellular periphery, subsequently leading to membrane hyperpolarization, in contrast to the contractile effects of histamine. Background: This brief report presents data characterizing air quality throughout the New Orleans area in the hours before, during and after the Carson Six fire in DeSoto National Park, Mississippi (October 2024). Fine, respirable particulate matter (PM2.5) is the air pollutant of greatest concern to public health from wildfire smoke as it can travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, where it can have a detrimental effect on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Background: Smoking has been associated with negative cardiovascular health outcomes. We analyzed data from The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to investigate whether certain biomarkers collected were related to both cardiovascular disease (CVD) occurrence and cigarette or ecigarette use. Methods: A total of 6,473 participants were grouped into cigarette users, e-cigarette users, and non-users. Among them, 6,020 (93%) developed CVD and 453 (7%) did not over PATH Study Waves 1 to 5. All participants were adults, had valid tobaccouse and biomarker data, and no pre-existing CVD prior to Wave 1. We conducted mediation analysis using nonlinear multiple …

Background: Women with a lower socioeconomic status (SES) have an increased risk of dying from breast cancer (BC) than those with a higher SES. The association of SES with BC survival may be partially mediated by factors such as Oncotype DX (ODX) testing and stage at diagnosis. This study aims to examine SES disparities in survival among HR+/HER2- BC women and to quantify the mediating effects of the ODX test and stage. A key feature of shooting reconstruction is trajectory analysis. There are several different methods of assessing this from the bullet impact mark including: best-fit ellipse, lead-in, trajectory rod, 3D laser scanning, and machine learning. While these function in differently, many share a common fault. Few trajectory analysis techniques evaluate the difference in bullet path for bullet morphology. This raises the question: does the morphology of a bullet influence its degree of deviation when interacting with a target material? Worldwide, amphibian populations have experienced dramatic declines due to a variety of threats. Among them, disease has been particularly deleterious and continues to impact populations. In the United States and Canada, the three leading causes of amphibian mass mortality events are ranavirosis, chytridiomycosis, and severe perkinsea infection, all caused by infectious pathogens. While research and policy have helped populations recover from these diseases, more work needs to be done to develop practical and efficient treatments for these infections. Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic erupted on 15 January 2022, causing Lamb waves to propagate throughout the global troposphere. However, reports on volcanic eruptions–pressure fluctuations and water level dynamics are lacking. We quantified the propagation processes of Lamb waves induced by the Tonga volcanic eruption. Barometric pressure data collected at 1-min intervals at 485 meteorological stations in China showed that the eruption induced an atmospheric pressure event with an amplitude of ∼2 hPa over an hour and a wave speed of 295 m/s. Concomitant groundwater levels were available at 338 wells to find the barometric response to the volcanic event. The …
