Building Bridges: Union Efforts To Address Stress Among Educational Staff, Theodore Michael Hamilton
Building Bridges: Union Efforts To Address Stress Among Educational Staff, Theodore Michael Hamilton
Dissertations
This mixed-methods study examines the relationship between administrative support and educator stress and burnout in a post-COVID unionized school district. Grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, and the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, the study surveyed 102 educational professionals and conducted semi-structured interviews with union delegates. Quantitative findings revealed that 75% of staff worked beyond contracted hours, and 63% assumed additional unpaid responsibilities. Lower levels of perceived administrative support were significantly correlated with higher burnout and greater intent to leave the profession. Qualitative thematic analysis identified key stressors, including inconsistent administrative communication, escalating student …

Schauder A Priori Estimates For Poisson's Equation., Janani P. Marasinghe
Research Papers
The Schauder a priori estimate for Poisson's equation is considered. These estimates are important for establishing the smoothness of solutions. Instead of proving the theorem of Schauder a priori estimate directly, this paper focuses on proving the theorem through three reductions. The first reduction normalizes the problem, the second reduction controls the H\"older semi-norm, and finally the third reduction gets a local estimate of the domain. Interpolation inequality for H\"older space and derivative estimates are used throughout this work.

Aging And The Law In Singapore And Japan: Adult Guardianship And Other Alternatives, Hang Wu Tang, Yukio Sakurai, Yue-En Chong
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Comparative adult guardianship law and other alternatives, especially in an Asian context, is an under-investigated area. This paper attempts to fill the gap in the literature by comparing the adult guardianship law and other alternatives from the perspectives of Singapore and Japan. The central argument of this paper is that in order for the law of adult guardianship to be widely adopted in Asian societies like Singapore and Japan - where much of adult guardianship related issues are governed by informal familial arrangements; this would require governments to do more than the mere enacting of adult guardianship legislation. To encourage …

Classifying Detrital Zircon U-Pb Age Distributions Using Automated Machine Learning, Jack W. Fekete, Glenn R. Sharman, Xiao Huang
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The prodigious use of detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology for provenance studies in recent decades has led many researchers to amass extensive datasets (>100,000 dates). When displayed as age distributions, individual samples are traditionally compared using visual inspection and statistical methods, which can become timeconsuming and challenging when using large datasets. We propose that machine learning (ML) can more efficiently classify a sample by its source using detrital zircon U-Pb age distributions. Specifically, we hypothesize that automated machine learning (AutoML), which optimizes algorithm selection and hyperparameters, will outperform an unoptimized Random Forest (RF) classifier and the cross-correlation coefficient (R-2), a …

The COVID-19 pandemic-driven economic downturn can have substantial implications for the gender gap in the labor market in developing countries, where women are already worse off in job participation and earnings than men. After more than two years of the pandemic, how has the labor market reshaped in developing countries like Nigeria? Using multiple rounds of data before and after the pandemic and incorporating a difference-in-differences design, we show that overall employment dropped in the post-epidemic period in Nigeria. Importantly, overall employment fell more for women than men in Nigeria. Women in the high-COVID-intensity areas also experienced a larger shift …

When interacting with others in unfamiliar sociocultural settings, people need to learn the norms guiding appropriate behavior. The present research investigates an individual difference that helps this kind of learning: stress reactivity. Interactions in an unfamiliar sociocultural setting are stressful, particularly when the actor fails to follow its rules. Although stress is typically considered a liability, more stress-reactive individuals may be more motivated to improve, and, thus, quicker to learn these rules. Consistent with this idea, a pilot study found that people genetically inclined to stress reactivity, as computed by a genetic profile score across 59 single nucleotide polymorphisms on …

Major Customers And Carbon Footprints Along The Supply Chain, Saiying Deng, Tinghua Duan, Frank Weikai Li, Xiaoling Pu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper examines whether major corporate customers curb corporate carbon emissions along the supply chain. We show that suppliers with a more concentrated customer base have significantly lower carbon emissions. The results are robust to alternative measures of carbon emissions and customer concentration, alternative sample, alternative explanation, and various approaches to mitigate endogeneity concerns. The effect is more pronounced when major customers have made emission-reduction commitment, when they are exposed to greater climate regulatory shocks and risks, and when they become more concerned about regulatory scrutiny. Moreover, the curbing effect of major customers on supplier carbon emissions is stronger when …

Background
By 2030, nonacute subdural hematomas (NASHs) will likely be the most common cranial neurosurgery pathology. Treatment with surgical evacuation may be necessary, but the recurrence rate after surgery is as high as 30%. Minimally invasive middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) during the perioperative period has been posited as an adjunctive treatment to decrease the potential for recurrence after surgical evacuation. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of concurrent MMAE in a multi-institutional cohort.
Methods
Data from 145 patients (median age 73 years) with NASH who underwent surgical evacuation and MMAE in the perioperative period were retrospectively collected from 15 …

Current treatments primarily involve trans-urethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) and immunotherapy with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Despite the efficacy of TURBT, issues with residual tumors persist. We chose to utilize Cell Painting to screen a set of 244 flavonoid compounds for bladder cancer cell toxicity. Using multiparametric high content analysis termed SPACe, we discover promising candidates underscoring the potential of flavonoids in targeting bladder cancer cells and elucidating their mechanisms of action. Notably, compounds such as xanthohumol show promise in reducing cancer cell viability by altering lipid metabolism. …

G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) are one of the frequently investigated drug targets. GPCRs are involved in many human pathophysiologies that lead to various disease conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and obesity. GPCR receptor activates multiple signaling pathways depending on the ligand and tissue type. However, this review will be limited to the GPCR-mediated metabolic modulations and the activation of relevant signaling pathways in cancer therapy. Cancer cells often have reprogrammed cell metabolism to support tumor growth and metastatic plasticity. Many aggressive cancer cells maintain a hybrid metabolic status, using both glycolysis and mitochondrial metabolism for better metabolic plasticity. In addition …

Importance: An emerging paradigm attributes third-trimester fetal growth deceleration in uncomplicated twin pregnancies to an evolutionary adaptive process. Evaluating longitudinal fetal soft-tissue development may provide important insights into differential fetal growth trajectories between twins and singletons.
Objective: To compare twin vs singleton lean and fat tissue growth across pregnancy.
Design, setting, and participants: Prospective cohort study of dichorionic twins and singletons with serial ultrasound scans to chart fetal growth (2009-2013) and collect fetal volume data to measure fat and lean tissue (2015-2019) in 12 US clinical centers. Participants were individuals with singleton (n = 2802 enrolled) and twin (n = …
