Understanding Disputes Over Digitalization: A Perspective Of Cross-Border Central Bank Digital Currencies, Heng Wang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In a rapidly digitalizing world, complex disputes would arise due to the technological, regulatory and other complexities. Public and private actors—including central banks, financial institutions, tech firms, and law firms—need to understand the complexity of these disputes before determining whether and how to engage with ongoing digitalization. Given the fundamental role of currency in the world economy, this article examines central bank digital currency (CBDC) as a pivotal case study. CBDCs, representing the digitalization of central bank money, are a novel digital form of national currency issued by central banks. Various central banks, including those of the Eurozone, Switzerland, the …
Driving Financial Inclusion Through Central Bank Digital Currencies: A Methodology For Cbdc Implementation, Heng Wang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This publication outlines a methodology for the design, testing, and implementation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) to advance financial inclusion. As an increasing number of central banks around the world explore this novel form of financial infrastructure, this paper focuses on the potential of CBDCs to address key access and price barriers in developing and emerging economies. CBDCs, especially retail ones, can offer unique opportunities for enhancing financial services accessibility, affordability, and usability for unserved and underserved populations, if implemented responsibly through a structured, inclusive and user-centric approach.

Ai Governance And Algorithmic Auditing In Financial Institutions: Lessons From Singapore, Nydia Remolina Leon
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This paper examines the role of algorithmic auditing as a mechanism for responsible AI development and deployment in the financial sector, with a particular focus on Singapore’s regulatory and institutional initiatives. Against the backdrop of fragmented global artificial intelligence (AI) governance frameworks, the study analyses how Singapore has developed operational tools — such as the Veritas Toolkit, AI Verify, Project Moonshot and Project Mindforge — that go beyond abstract ethical principles to provide measurable, use-case-specific standards for auditing AI systems. These initiatives contribute to standardising audit practices, enhancing transparency and bridging trust gaps between financial institutions, regulators and stakeholders. The …

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The purpose of the present report is to provide an overview and analysis of the measures that States adopt domestically to implement treaties that establish mechanisms for the resolution of international disputes. The report’s scope subsumes both treaties that include dispute settlement mechanisms to resolve disputes concerning the substantive obligations contained therein as well as treaties that establish frameworks for dispute resolution simpliciter which may be used to resolve disputes arising under a variety of substantive treaties (collectively “international dispute settlement mechanism” or “IDSM” treaties). The approach of the research contained within this report has been to gather information about …

A comparative approach is adopted, exploring student experiences at Zayed University (ZU) in the UAE and King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Saudi Arabia. The principal variables of interest, including Expected Benefits (EB), University Support (US), Ethical Awareness (EA), and Technology Self-Efficacy (TSE), are examined, with particular attention to their direct and mediated influences through Behavioral Intention (BI) on student satisfaction (SS). Data were collected through surveys and …
A Stacking Ensemble Model For Food Demand Forecasting: A Preventative Approach To Food Waste Reduction, Asmaa Seyam, Sujith Samuel Mathew, Bo Du, May El Barachi, Jun Shen
A Stacking Ensemble Model For Food Demand Forecasting: A Preventative Approach To Food Waste Reduction, Asmaa Seyam, Sujith Samuel Mathew, Bo Du, May El Barachi, Jun Shen
All Works
Building effective demand forecasting is crucial for better planning and ensuring sustainability within food supply chain systems. The food industry has received the least attention for building demand forecasting approaches, with a noticeable lack of utilizing ensemble stacking models. Additionally, while some models have achieved accurate predictions, they do not consider freshness variables and are not assessed for their impact on waste reduction. This paper develops a demand forecasting framework that is considered as a preventative approach to reduce food waste by enabling food retailers to better manage inventory and balance supply with demand. The paper first develops an ensemble …
"I Just Kind Of Wish People Knew We Existed:" Rethinking Queer Visibility, Identity, And Belonging In Rural America, Alyson C. Hagen
"I Just Kind Of Wish People Knew We Existed:" Rethinking Queer Visibility, Identity, And Belonging In Rural America, Alyson C. Hagen
University Honors Theses
This thesis explores how LGBTQ+ individuals in rural America navigate identity, visibility, and belonging amid the pressures of metronormativity--the dominant cultural narrative that equates queerness with urban life. Through qualitative interviews with five queer adults who lived in rural settings, the study shows that rural queer life is shaped by not only structural erasure and limited resources but also adaptive strategies, emotional labor, and creative community-building. Participants described environments where queerness was often unspoken or denied, yet they developed contingent forms of visibility, online belonging, and grassroots kinship to survive and thrive. Although all participants had migrated to urban areas, …

An Exposition Of "Probabilistic Polynomials And Hamming Nearest Neighbors", Vivek Srirama
University Honors Theses
This paper is an exposition of the paper Probabilistic Polynomials and Hamming Nearest Neighbors by Josh Alman and Ryan Williams. It presents the findings of this paper in a more accessible format for Computer Science students earlier in their career who may not be as familiar with Computational Theory and its concepts as their PhD counterparts are. The paper assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of Algorithms and Complexity, typically obtained in an introductory level Algorithms course.
The paper by Alman and Williams analyzes a specific problem known as the Hamming Nearest Neighbor problem. All known solutions for …
Rebuilding Consent: Fear, Trust, And The Future Of Nuclear Energy, Austin Dunham
Rebuilding Consent: Fear, Trust, And The Future Of Nuclear Energy, Austin Dunham
University Honors Theses
This thesis traces the cultural and emotional roots of nuclear fear in the United States and explores how those inherited anxieties continue to shape public resistance to nuclear energy in the face of a worsening climate crisis. Drawing on personal narrative, risk perception theory, and the history of nuclear discourse - from Hiroshima to Chernobyl to today - the research examines how trust, rather than technology, remains the largest barrier to progress. By analyzing the stories we tell about energy, disaster, control, and overall perceived risk, this work asks what it would take for Americans to imagine nuclear energy not …
Alloparenting And Male Infant Care Behaviors In Varecia Rubra (Red-Ruffed Lemur), Noelle Wilcox
Alloparenting And Male Infant Care Behaviors In Varecia Rubra (Red-Ruffed Lemur), Noelle Wilcox
University Honors Theses
Nonhuman primates are known for their complex social structures that sometimes includes cooperative breeding strategies. In recent years there has been an increase in investigating alloparenting (infant care provided by an adult or subadult that is not a genetic parent) and male infant care, and how such behaviors contribute to the overall assistance to the extreme energetic investment and costs of the mother for the rearing of offspring. There is also debate to how male care has evolved in the primate clade, be it through the theory of kin selection or theory of mutualism. However, there is not enough research …

Beauty In The Feed: Exploring The Role Of Social Media In Women's Body Image And Emotional Satisfaction, Momina Hassan
University Honors Theses
Through a thematic analysis assessing four peer-reviewed studies, this thesis explores the relationship between social media (e.g., content, engagement factors) and how it impacts women's body image and emotional satisfaction. The studies varied in methodological approach and age demographics, but included only female participants. The research reviewed in this thesis calls attention to the harmful effects social media can have on women's health such as body dissatisfaction, anxiety, depression and disordered eating. The two main themes that emerged were appearance-based social comparison, and psychological impacts on mental health (e.g., anxiety, depression, disordered eating). Exposure to idealized images on social media …
Swarlipi: An Exploration In Devanagari Typography, Hindustani Music, And Emotional Expression, Arya Radhika
Swarlipi: An Exploration In Devanagari Typography, Hindustani Music, And Emotional Expression, Arya Radhika
University Honors Theses
Local Indian scripts are slowly fading in favor of Latin and English due to the idolization and convenience of Western culture in post-colonial India. Unique Indic fonts and quality cultural design work are uncommon. To contribute to a small pool of design that deserves to be much larger, I decided to explore a niche topic--the emotional expression of Indian classical music, in particular the concept of time theory, and how Devanagari lettering can represent the emotions evoked by music.
I conducted surveys and several interviews to understand how typography expresses emotion in terms of technical concepts as well as cultural …
Impacts Of Parent Separation Within Siblings: A Literature Review, Araceli Tello Hernandez
Impacts Of Parent Separation Within Siblings: A Literature Review, Araceli Tello Hernandez
University Honors Theses
Parent-child separation is a growing global issue that impacts millions of families. Although there is research on how an individual child might be impacted by separation from their parents, less is known about siblings. The importance of understanding the individual first and looking at attachment theory and resilience, its role it plays. The study serves to investigate the traumatic events of parent separation through loss whether death, divorce or immigration and seeing the gaps of literature when talking about these topics. This data relies on different literature and different research that shows how a traumatizing event can impact a child's …
Mindfulness As A Buffer Against Death Anxiety: Implications For End-Of-Life Care, Chad Alexander
Mindfulness As A Buffer Against Death Anxiety: Implications For End-Of-Life Care, Chad Alexander
University Honors Theses
Death anxiety, defined as the distress associated with the awareness of mortality, has profound psychological and cultural impacts. Western societies often respond to death salience through avoidance and medicalization, reinforcing defensive strategies described by Terror Management Theory. This project aimed to investigate whether mindfulness can serve as a buffer against death anxiety. A structured literature review was conducted using PsycINFO, PubMed, the Portland State University Library, and Google Scholar between January 2025 and April 2025. One study found that mindfulness moderated the effects of death anxiety on health-related quality of life in people living with HIV. Two experiments linked mindfulness …
What Is Known About The Psychological Impacts Of Acting, And Where Are The Gaps?, Elizabeth Blaydoe
What Is Known About The Psychological Impacts Of Acting, And Where Are The Gaps?, Elizabeth Blaydoe
University Honors Theses
Acting has been a profession since before 400 BCE, and still is to this day through theater, television shows, movies, voice acting, and more. While studies consider the impact of acting on the audience, there are significant gaps of information for the psychological impacts this profession has. This thesis conducts a literature review of topics such as pretend play, role-play, drama therapy, and acting, to examine what is known about the topic, and a thematic analysis of fifteen publicly available interviews with a total of twenty-two actors to investigate what is known of the experience of actors. Six themes highlighted …
Begin Again: Blooming, Samantha Hope Boulgarides
Begin Again: Blooming, Samantha Hope Boulgarides
University Honors Theses
Begin Again: blooming is a poetry thesis that explores the complexities of trauma, recovery, and identity through a feminist lens. Drawing from the lyric tradition, each poem serves as an emotional excavation, using voice, fragmentation, and address to create intimacy while resisting linear narrative and traditional poetic conventions.
The collection examines how pain imprints itself on the body and memory, with pieces like "Dear Dad," "Clean," and "My Baby" demonstrating the tension between tenderness and pain. Visually experimental and emotionally charged, these poems refuse erasure, reclaiming agency through raw articulation and form. Rather than seeking resolution, the speaker circles truth, …
More Than Hormones: Psychological Consequences Of The Medicalized Menopausal Experience, Haley Derrickson
More Than Hormones: Psychological Consequences Of The Medicalized Menopausal Experience, Haley Derrickson
University Honors Theses
Menopause, a transitional period that roughly half the population may experience, has a high degree of variability in onset and intensity of symptoms, one of which is depression. It is also a period in which the lives of those transitioning are highly medicalized. This literature review investigates how medicalization has increased since the term was created, and how it impacts perimenopause, menopause, and mental health.
The Impact Of Nicu Death On Bereaved Mothers, Jennie Terranova
The Impact Of Nicu Death On Bereaved Mothers, Jennie Terranova
University Honors Theses
Infant loss in the United States occurs 5.6 per 1,000 live births. This paper examines risk factors that contribute to neonatal death. Prematurity is a risk factor for NICU admission. A portion of premature babies receiving care in the NICU will die. The stressful nature of the NICU has been studied widely in journals. The impact of NICU death on hospital staff and bereaved parents has been studied less. Mortality studies suggest that bereaved mothers are at a high risk of dying within the first 5 years after their child has died. Despite the frequency of maternal death post-child loss, …
The Influence Of Ethnic Racial Identity On The Critical Consciousness Of Asian American College Students, Aliyah Sukkram
The Influence Of Ethnic Racial Identity On The Critical Consciousness Of Asian American College Students, Aliyah Sukkram
University Honors Theses
Ethical and racial identity (ERI) and critical consciousness play crucial roles in how youth of color understand themselves, contextualize their racialized experiences, and navigate oppressive social conditions. However, there has been a lack of research on both constructs in the lives of Asian American youth. Thus, this thesis aims to study the influence of ERI on the critical consciousness of Asian American college students by conducting semi-structured interviews. ERI was found to influence critical reflection and critical action but not political efficacy. The relationship between ERI and critical consciousness is understood through how youth engage with their ERI and contextualize …
American Consumer Culture And Social Media Polarization: Analyzing Twentieth Century Trends And Their Effects On Twenty First Century Politics, Max Lally
University Honors Theses
The emergence of social media as a mainstream communication technology during the early twenty first century has had an outsized impact on the United States' political system. By analyzing trends in American culture and economics beginning in the decades following the end of World War Two, the circumstances that shaped social media during its development can be tied to long term historical changes. Shifts away from traditional models of community and towards rising individualism reshaped communication with both political allies and opponents. Generational shifts in political attitudes have heightened these divisions as well, as younger and liberal perspectives challenge traditional, …
