Basal Autophagy Promotes Accurate Chromosome Segregation In Drosophila Oocytes And Declines During Oocyte Aging, Diana C. Hilpert Jun 2025

Basal Autophagy Promotes Accurate Chromosome Segregation In Drosophila Oocytes And Declines During Oocyte Aging, Diana C. Hilpert

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The frequency of trisomic pregnancies exponentially increases with advanced maternal age, a phenomenon known as the maternal age effect. The majority of these aneuploid pregnancies arise from meiotic segregation errors in the oocyte and premature loss of sister chromatid cohesion is a contributing factor. However, the mechanisms that lead to premature cohesion loss during oocyte aging are not fully understood.

Using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism, work described in this dissertation demonstrates that basal levels of autophagy, a degradation process for damaged organelles and protein aggregates, are required during meiotic prophase for arm cohesion maintenance and accurate meiotic segregation …

Lost And Found: The Forgotten Origins Of The “Cruel And Unusual Punishments” Prohibition, John D. Bessler Jun 2025

Lost And Found: The Forgotten Origins Of The “Cruel And Unusual Punishments” Prohibition, John D. Bessler

Articles

The U.S. Supreme Court and legal scholars have long traced the origins of the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against “cruel and unusual punishments” to the English Declaration of Rights, codified as the English Bill of Rights (1689). The English Declaration of Rights recited that, in King James II’s reign, “illegal and cruel punishments” had been “inflicted,” with its tenth clause then declaring in hortatory fashion: “That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” The prohibitions against excessive bail and excessive fines and the final phrase—“nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted”—were later …

The Moving Pieces Of Corporate Disclosure: Truth, Falsity, And Half-Truths In Between, Donald C. Langevoort Jun 2025

The Moving Pieces Of Corporate Disclosure: Truth, Falsity, And Half-Truths In Between, Donald C. Langevoort

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The half-truth doctrine is made operational in the common statutory and rule-based admonitions in the securities laws (particularly Rule 10b-5) not to omit “material fact[s] necessary in order to make . . . statements made . . . not misleading . . . .” It cabins the temptation to exploit the privilege of nondisclosure through what has been called “artful paltering.” Unfortunately, the evolution of the half-truth doctrine has become more of a poor stepsister than a muscular companion. It carries less than a full load in the complex ecosystem that exists for public company disclosure today. And it is …

Assessing The Relationship Between Combat Exposure, Wartime Service, And Barriers To Substance Use Disorder Treatment In Post 9/11 Veterans., Robert Near Jun 2025

Assessing The Relationship Between Combat Exposure, Wartime Service, And Barriers To Substance Use Disorder Treatment In Post 9/11 Veterans., Robert Near

Dissertations

Substance use disorders (SUDs) represent a critical public health concern, particularly within military and veteran populations. The complex interplay of mental health challenges, combat exposure, and the unique stressors associated with military service contribute to a heightened vulnerability among veterans. Research from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) underscores the prevalence of these issues, indicating that approximately 1 in 10 veterans from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars treated by the VA are diagnosed with a SUD (Veterans Affairs, 2023). Additionally, veterans from all eras show a higher propensity for binge drinking when compared to the general population, further …

The Rose That Grew From Concrete: Exploring The Romantic Experiences Of Black Men With Histories Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Tatyana Nichelle Smith Jun 2025

The Rose That Grew From Concrete: Exploring The Romantic Experiences Of Black Men With Histories Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Tatyana Nichelle Smith

Dissertations

Contemporary research typically characterizes Black heterosexual relationships by dismal marriage and divorce rates, largely ignoring the reality of how Black men develop attachments with their romantic partners and therefore continuing to perpetuate deficit perspectives of Black men (e.g., the cause of conflictual romantic relationships and “broken” Black families). What may be less understood about these relationships is the influence of childhood trauma, such as childhood sexual abuse, and Black men’s experiences of gender role conflict. Research shows that Black men’s experiences of childhood sexual abuse and socialization about masculinity have important implications for how they come to view themselves and …

Rotating Scatter Mask System Optimization Study For Determining Optimal Image Recreation, Seth L. Grover Jun 2025

Rotating Scatter Mask System Optimization Study For Determining Optimal Image Recreation, Seth L. Grover

Theses and Dissertations

The Rotating Scatter Mask (RSM) system is a radiation imaging technology currently limited by the mask design and governing identification algorithm parameters. To optimize the RSM design, Dakota—an optimization software—was integrated with a ray tracing code that simulates particle interactions with the RSM detector, and with the Locally Competitive Algorithm (LCA), which reconstructs the source image based on the ray tracing code’s Detector Response Matrix (DRM). Since the original ray tracing code was developed in MATLAB, it was translated into Python to improve compatibility with both Dakota and LCA. The Python version of the ray tracing code was then integrated …

Fused-Silica Microelectromechanical Systems For Relative Gravimetry, Ethan Doerstling Jun 2025

Fused-Silica Microelectromechanical Systems For Relative Gravimetry, Ethan Doerstling

Theses and Dissertations

Gravimeters are devices that measure gravitational acceleration which can be used by the United States Air Force (USAF) in the areas of navigation and remote sensing. Fused-silica microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices offer capabilities to make inexpensive relative gravimeters with higher thermal stability than common silicon devices while maintaining good gravitational sensitivity. The fused-silica devices in this research were designed, simulated, fabricated, and tested to observe their performance as gravimeters. The devices exhibit properties of highly sensitive accelerometers but the current designs do not qualify as gravimeters. This study provides information to improve the sensitivity and stability of these fused-silica MEMS …

A Vacuolar Proton Pump Controls The Post-Germinative Growth Of Rice (Oryza Sativa Ssp. Japonica), Peter James Icalia Gann, Soumen Nandy, Rodrigo Botelho, Kari Vinzant, Mariya Khodakovskaya, Vibha Srivastava

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Post-germinative growth in plants is controlled by sucrose mobilization from the endosperm. Regulation of this process, however, is not fully understood. Transcriptional suppression of the rice vacuolar H+ translocating pyrophosphatase (V-PPase) referred to as VPP5 led to enhanced starch content in mature grains. However, vpp5 suppressed lines displayed a slower post-germinative growth rescuable by sucrose, indicating inefficient sucrose mobilization from the endosperm. Biochemical and gene expression analyses showed a slower rate of starch to sucrose conversion and altered expression of the key starch utilization pathway genes. We hypothesized that the modulation of metabolic activities in the vpp5 lines was based …

Predicting Federal Third-Party Funding Regulation, Victoria Shannon Sahani Jun 2025

Predicting Federal Third-Party Funding Regulation, Victoria Shannon Sahani

Utah Law Review

Third-party funding is a global phenomenon, although regulatory enforcement is local. Regulatory approaches vary widely from country to country and within countries, especially in federal legal systems, such as Canada, Australia, and the United States. The United States federal government is learning about third-party funding with an eye toward potential future regulation. Congress has been investigating funding, as evidenced by testimony in congressional hearings, proposed federal legislation, and a nonpartisan study on third-party funding by the Government Accountability Office. In addition, after more than a decade of observation, the United States Federal Civil Rules Advisory Committee recently formed a committee …

Third-Party Funding Of Patent Litigation: Problems And Solutions, Korok Ray, Adam Olson Jun 2025

Third-Party Funding Of Patent Litigation: Problems And Solutions, Korok Ray, Adam Olson

Utah Law Review

This Article documents the rise of third-party funding in patent litigation. We track funding sources for patent lawsuits in the United States from 2002 to 2021, which show an increase in cases and percentage funded by third parties. While we cannot say third-party funding increased patent litigation, we can observe the correlation. The use of the champerty doctrine by patent trolls distorts the marketplace and causes frivolous litigation.

The secondary patent market created a robust litigation market in which non-practicing entities (NPEs) can buy from innovators and sue defendants. Capital investments bet on litigation, hoping for a return without interest …

Individuals in Westernized countries spend most of their time indoors. However, exploration of residential building factors that may influence occupants’ mental health is limited in scientific literature. The purpose of this study was to explore investigator's perceived areas of importance in residences to mental health via survey methods. To that end, we administered the Housing, Occupancy, Materials, and Environment (HOME) survey to assess factors that may influence mental health to those working in the United States (US) Air Force (n = 230) or past military members, US Veterans (n = 180). Self-reported mental health surveys were also administered to the …

War, Wounds, And Strategy: Patient Movement Lessons From The World Wars For Great Power Competition, Phillip R. Jenkins

Faculty Publications

This thesis examines the evolution of the U.S. military's patient movement system during World War I and World War II to evaluate how well it may perform under the conditions of future large-scale combat operations. It asks whether the United States can move, treat, and sustain wounded personnel at the scale and pace required to preserve combat power in a prolonged, high-intensity conflict. Using detailed case studies of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and the Battle of the Bulge, the analysis focuses on how transportation platforms, organizational structure, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) shaped patient movement under conditions of attrition, disruption, and …

Inferring The Timing Of Antiretroviral Therapy By Zero-Inflated Random Change Point Models Using Longitudinal Data Subject To Left-Censoring, Hongbin Zhang, Mckaylee Robertson, Sarah L. Braunstein, David B. Hanna, Uriel R. Felsen, Levi Waldron, Denis Nash

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

We propose a new random change point model that utilizes routinely recorded individual-level HIV viral load data to estimate the timing of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation in people living with HIV. The change point distribution is assumed to follow a zero-inflated exponential distribution for the longitudinal data, which is also subject to left-censoring, and the underlying data-generating mechanism is a nonlinear mixed-effects model. We extend the Stochastic EM (StEM) algorithm by combining a Gibbs sampler with a Metropolis–Hastings sampling. We apply the method to real HIV data to infer the timing of ART initiation since diagnosis. Additionally, we conduct simulation …

A diagnostic rubric is required to distinguish between limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43 inclusions (FTLD-TDP). In LATE-NC Stage 3, TDP-43 proteinopathy is present in the middle frontal gyrus (MFG), thus posing a potential diagnostic challenge in differentiating these severe LATE-NC cases from FTLD-TDP. LATE-NC Stage 3 cases and other TDP-43 proteinopathies were analyzed from the University of Kentucky (total n = 514 with TDP-43 pathology assessed), The 90+ Study at the University of California Irvine (n = 458), and the Mayo Clinic (n = 5067) brain banks. Digital pathology was used to …

Prickle-free blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus) canes are strongly preferred by growers due to food and worker safety concerns and damage to fruit from mechanical injury by prickles. This project was conducted to identify the genetic region responsible for prickle-free canes derived from the recessive "Merton Thornless" source in autotetraploid blackberry using a genome-wide association study, develop diagnostic Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR markers for prickle-free canes, and determine the effects of allele dosage at the prickle-free locus on prickle density in 2 biparental populations. The prickle locus was located on chromosome Ra04 from 30.48 to 36.04 Mb in an extensive LD block, …

A Realizability Approach To Constructing Higher Types Via Classifiers, Benjamin Carrick Logsdon Jun 2025

A Realizability Approach To Constructing Higher Types Via Classifiers, Benjamin Carrick Logsdon

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

We construct an interpretation of higher types into Peano arithmetic, showing in particular that every model of PA is a model of higher types. This is a reversal of Gödel’s Dialectica construction. We also define the classifier degrees, a degree structure which subsumes the Turing degrees, the enumeration degrees, and the many-one degrees. The classifier degrees boast a rich structure and many well-behaved operations.
