Leader-Follower Platooning With Turtlebot3: A Low-Cost Ros Test-Bed Using Vision-Lidar Fusion, Patrick Kelly Crandall, Kalon Ma Bienz
Electrical Engineering
This report presents the design, implementation, and indoor validation of a two-robot leader–follower platoon built on low-cost Turtlebot3 platforms. Each robot runs ROS Noetic on an on-board Raspberry Pi 4, fusing a fisheye camera for HSV-based lane detection with an LDS-02 LiDAR for clustering-based leader identification. A dual-loop architecture (PD steering for lateral control and PID for longitudinal gap regulation) maintains a 0.40m headway and keeps the follower centered within +/- 5 cm of the lane midline, without any inter-vehicle communication or external localization. Track experiments at speeds up to 0.18m/s achieved mean gap error of +/- 3 cm and …

Advanced Light Dimming Power Converter, Jaden Nguyen, Edwin Lin, Alan Thai
Electrical Engineering
This senior project discusses and follows the development of the Advanced Light Dimming Power Converter meant to modernize the power electronics curriculum and improve student safety for a lab. The power converter attempts to replace the original experiment which includes a traditional TRIAC-based dimmer and focuses on demonstrating phase angle control for incandescent light bulbs. However, several drawbacks including high-voltage exposure and outdated technology warranted a revamp. The redesigned module includes a dual-experiment setup with an updated TRIAC-based dimmer circuit and a new AC-DC LED driver circuit with constant current control and PWM dimming capability. Both systems have been fabricated …

The Role Of Advisory Opinions In International Law In The Context Of The Climate Crisis, Maria Antonia Tigre, Armando Rocha
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
Between December 2022 and March 2023, three requests for an advisory opinion were submitted to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Furthermore, a request for an advisory opinion from the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCtHPR) is being prepared. As such, 2024–2025 marks an unprecedented moment in global climate litigation: as of November 2024, we are on the verge of having four of the world’s most important international and regional courts and tribunals answering crucial legal questions on the (ex …

Daughters Left Behind: How Trade Liberalization Harms Girls In China When Government Restricts Migration, Xuwen Gao, Wenquan Liang, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Ran Song

China’s accession to the WTO created new economic opportunities in certain cities. A shiftshare identification strategy shows that residents of adjacent rural areas migrated in and advanced economically. Longitudinal panel data on children reveals that their sons benefit, but counter-intuitively, daughters suffer worse mental and physical health, complete fewer years of schooling, and remain poor later in life. We explore why, and learn that hukou policy that restricts migrant children’s access to urban public schools is a factor. Triple difference research designs reveal that migrant parents become discontinuously more likely to leave daughters (but not sons) behind in rural areas …
Understanding Teacher Attrition In Nebraska: A Quantitative Approach Using Markov Chains And Graph Theory, Md Tahidul Islam
Understanding Teacher Attrition In Nebraska: A Quantitative Approach Using Markov Chains And Graph Theory, Md Tahidul Islam
Mathematics Theses, Dissertations, Research and Student Creative Activity
Teacher attrition is a growing concern in Nebraska, particularly in rural and high-need districts where staffing challenges are most acute. This study applies a hybrid approach combining Markov Chain modeling and Graph Theory to analyze over three decades of longitudinal employment data from the Nebraska Department of Education. A discrete-time Markov model is used to estimate transition probabilities between roles such as Teacher, Administrator, and Exit, revealing high attrition risks among early-career educators and paraprofessionals. To complement this, a directed weighted graph is constructed to examine the structural properties of role transitions using centrality, clustering, and entropy metrics. Results show …
Bridging The Policy Gap: A Critical Autoethnography Of Asylum Accompaniment, Amanda Heffernan, Audrey Hudgins
Bridging The Policy Gap: A Critical Autoethnography Of Asylum Accompaniment, Amanda Heffernan, Audrey Hudgins
International Studies Faculty Scholarship
Unlike refugees, most asylum-seekers receive scant attention from US government and non-profit agencies. A loose network of individuals and organizations aims to bridge this gap in policy and services through the practice of asylum accompaniment. This article, by two scholar-activists with a combined 10 years of experience accompanying asylum-seekers, aims to:
- Explore the praxis of asylum accompaniment via critical autoethnography, using our accompaniment narratives to illuminate the dynamics of accompaniment relationships, including the profound mutual benefits of this type of engagement and the complexities of social and political power, privilege, and access
- Propose policy solutions that emerge from critical reflection …

Technology And The Unique Challenges Of Applying Law To The Realm Of Outer Space And Space Activities, F.G. Von Der Dunk
Technology And The Unique Challenges Of Applying Law To The Realm Of Outer Space And Space Activities, F.G. Von Der Dunk
Chicago Journal of International Law
For better or worse, technology at heart is—except to the extent that artificial intelligence fundamentally becomes involved—not so much a creator as a facilitator and enhancer of human acts, actions and activities, allowing them to become more effective, less costly, or sometimes even just merely feasible. Perhaps nowhere that is more pertinent then when it comes to human activities in outer space, which are still overwhelmingly conducted remotely and hence crucially dependent on technology. Given that “the law” has always been geared to address humans and their acts, actions, and activities, this gives rise to a rather special approach to …

Digital Investigations Of Systematic And Conflict-Related Sexual Violence: Practice And Possibilities, Alexa Koenig
Chicago Journal of International Law
This article discusses a new guide that has been developed to support the responsible use of digital open-source information to investigate systematic and conflict-related sexual violence (SCRSV). Drafted by the Institute for International Criminal Investigations and the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley School of Law, the just-published pilot version of the Open- Source Practitioner’s Guide to the Murad Code aims to minimize the risks and maximize the potential for digital investigations into SCRSV. Part I of this article opens with a brief history of accountability for SCRSV, touching on the need to strengthen SCRSV investigations and providing a brief …
The Click-And-Commit World Order, Melissa J. Durkee
The Click-And-Commit World Order, Melissa J. Durkee
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Article explores the rise of a new model of global governance: the “click-and-commit world order,” characterized by digitally mediated pledging platforms through which a wide array of actors—states, corporations, cities, NGOs, and individuals—publicly commit to addressing global problems through non-binding promises. In contrast to traditional treaty-making, these pledging platforms offer a decentralized, voluntary framework for international cooperation that relies on public declarations rather than negotiated obligations.
Within the U.N. system, this mode of governance developed within the United Nations Global Compact and the Paris Climate Agreement, where bottom-up pledges were institutionalized within formal and informal international structures. The internet …

From Human Mapping To Machine Embedding: Uncovering Key Legal Drivers And Deterrents Of Isds Filing Frequencies, Sangchul Park
Chicago Journal of International Law
International investment agreements (IIAs), while intended to prop cross-border investment, have faced persistent criticism for potentially undermining the regulatory sovereignty of developing countries. Various mechanisms have been proposed as alternatives to traditional bilateral investment treaty (BIT) models, often with the goal of curbing investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) filings. While existing research has uncovered the impact of nonlegal factors, such as macroeconomic crises, little has been done to systematically examine how legal provisions in either major model BITs or ISDS reform toolboxes influence ISDS filing patterns. To address this gap, this Article analyzes the interplay between (i) legal texts of 2,148 …
Revolutions In Justice: Advancing The Rome Statute System To Fight Impunity In Future Wars, Lindsay Freeman
Revolutions In Justice: Advancing The Rome Statute System To Fight Impunity In Future Wars, Lindsay Freeman
Chicago Journal of International Law
The modern system of international criminal justice, which was born out of World War II and built in its current form during the early 1990s, is both revolutionary and a relic. The ideals, innovation, and vision that created the international legal order were ground-breaking at the time but have failed to evolve at a pace that ensures its relevance and efficacy. The challenges we face today are drastically different from those in the period in which the framework was conceived, the institutions were formed, and the laws were drafted. While these changes have been incremental over several decades, technological advances …
Technology And The Law Of Jus Ante Bellum, Asaf Lubin
Technology And The Law Of Jus Ante Bellum, Asaf Lubin
Chicago Journal of International Law
The temporal boundaries of the international rules governing military force are myopic. By focusing only on the initiation and conduct of war, the legal dichotomy between Jus Ad Bellum and Jus In Bello fails to address the critical role of peacetime military preparations in shaping future conflicts. Disruptive military technologies, such as artificial intelligence and cyber offensive capabilities, only further underscore this deficiency. During their pre-war development, these technologies embed countless design choices, hardcoding into their software and user interfaces policy rationales, legal interpretations, and value judgments. Once deployed in battle, these choices have the potential to precondition warfighters and …
The Reign Of Cerberus: International Law And Technological Innovation, Paul B. Stephan
The Reign Of Cerberus: International Law And Technological Innovation, Paul B. Stephan
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Essay sketches an informal theory of the impact of technological change on international economics, and hence international relations expressed as international law. The theory points to a policy trilemma, something that I call Cerberus in a perhaps futile attempt at an arresting metaphor. The Essay uses the trilemma to illuminate the general trends in technology policy we see playing out in China, Europe, and the United States. It argues that we have the privilege of witnessing an ongoing natural experiment in optimal technology regulation and legal policy, with no guarantee as to which approach will prevail.
Of course, like …
Interplanetary Risk Regulation, Jonathan B. Wiener, Charles (Chase) Hamilton
Interplanetary Risk Regulation, Jonathan B. Wiener, Charles (Chase) Hamilton
Chicago Journal of International Law
Space exploration promises new opportunities but also new risks. After centuries of national settlements and international conflicts on Earth, and the Cold War era of two great power states racing to the Moon, today we see a rapidly proliferating arena of actors, both governmental and non-governmental, undertaking bold new ventures off-Earth while posing an array of new risks. These multiple activities, actors, and risks raise the prospects of regulatory gaps, costs, conflicts, and complexities that warrant reconsideration and renovation of legacy legal regimes such as the international space law agreements. New approaches are needed, beyond current national and international law, …

Multiple Myeloma Presenting As An Ill-Defined Osteolytic Lesion Of The Mandibular Condyle: A Case Report And Literature Review, Connor Capobianco, Mariella Padilla, Jungsuk Cho, Lauren Levi
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty Papers
Osteolytic lesions of the mandibular condyle can represent a diverse range of differential diagnoses, including malignancies such as metastatic disease, Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and multiple myeloma. This case report details a 40-year-old male with a 3-year history of right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, initially misdiagnosed as temporomandibular disorder. Comprehensive imaging studies, including cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), maxillofacial computed tomography (CT), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), revealed extensive osteolytic lesions in the mandible, frontal bone, and cervical spine. A CT-guided biopsy confirmed the presence of a plasma cell neoplasm, leading to the diagnosis of multiple myeloma. …

Renewable energy has gained significant popularity in Bangladesh due to its potential to provide a sustainable and reliable future while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. However, despite these advantages, renewable energy sources face challenges, particularly regarding intermittency and variability, which can impact the stability and reliability of the power supply. To address these challenges, hybrid renewable energy systems offer a potential solution to the energy crisis in Bangladesh by integrating multiple renewable energy sources, thereby enhancing overall reliability and efficiency while mitigating the limitations of individual sources. In this context, this review critically examines various …

Herein, we report on the synthesis and characterization of p-type semiconductor indium phosphide/zinc sulphide (InP/ZnS) core/shell quantum dots (QDs) prepared via a simple solvothermal method and their potential application in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) flexible solar cell (SC). The BHJ SC composed of donor–acceptor (D-A) configuration at nanoscale provides larger interfacial junction area throughout the bulk volume of the photoabsorber D-A blend that facilitates excitons to efficiently dissociate within the bulk layer at D-A interface. Hence, InP/ZnS core–shell QDs and a fullerene derivative – phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) – are used as hybrid inorganic–organic D-A materials, respectively, to …

From Idea To Action: Defining And Measuring Voice Implementation, Ann E. Schlotzhauer, Mark G. Ehrhart
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Despite increasing interest in the topic, research on managerial responses to voice is underdeveloped. In this article, we differentiate voice implementation from voice appreciation to add much-needed nuance to our understanding of how voice targets respond to voice behavior. We define voice implementation as the extent to which a voice target undertakes voluntary effort with the goal of enacting a suggestion from a voicer, including attempting to put a suggestion into action and/or advocating for the idea to those with the power to enact the suggestion. A 5-item scale based on this definition demonstrated strong content validity, construct validity, and …

Morphological Variation And Change In The Lateral Ventricles And Caudate Nucleus Across Schizophrenia Types: A Metric Analysis, Devin Venezia
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Schizophrenia is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that alters cognitive function, perception, and behavior. The disorder affects one percent of the global population and is characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, cognitive function, and emotional expression (Hany et al., 2024). While previous research involves three-dimensional (3D) renderings of subcortical structures that demonstrate schizophrenic-specific morphology (Narr et al., 2001; Zhang et al., 2023), the variation expressed by different schizophrenia subtypes require greater focus. This research study explores the structural variations in the lateral ventricles and the caudate nucleus across different schizophrenia subtypes, emphasizing potential sexbased differences. This study hypothesized …
