Insights On Human Papillomavirus Among Medical Students And Professionals, Fathima Thansiha, Amogha Shree, Rashmi S

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

Background: As per World Health Organization, in 2022, 660000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and 350000 women died from the disease. Sexual behaviour is the major risk factor and exposure to Human Papillomavirus has been established as a causative agent in 70-80% of the cases for development of cervical cancer. Most infections with HPV resolve spontaneously and cause no symptoms, persistent infection can cause cervical cancer in women. Effective primary (HPV vaccination) and secondary prevention approaches (screening and treating precancerous lesions) will prevent most cervical cancer cases. Thus, study was conducted with the objective of assessing the knowledge …

Am I A Scientist? Using Pláticas To Understand Stem Identity Development Among High School Latinx Students In Advanced Science Classes, Sara Sorto Carvalho

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

This qualitative study explores how Latinx students experience Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors science classes in high school, and how these experiences shape their STEM identity. Despite making up the largest demographic group at Solaris High School in Northern California, Latinx students are significantly underrepresented in advanced science courses. Using a pláticas methodology grounded in Critical Race Theory (CRT), Latinx Critical Race Theory (LatCrit), and Community Cultural Wealth (CCW), this study centers student voice to understand how systemic problems, such as tracking and deficit thinking, impact students’ access to and navigation of rigorous science classes. The study includes individual and …

Becoming A More Effective Instructor Using Primary Source Projects, Tricia Muldoon Brown Jun 2025

Becoming A More Effective Instructor Using Primary Source Projects, Tricia Muldoon Brown

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Inquiry-based Learning (IBL) is a pedagogical practice with much supporting research for its effectiveness with all students, but especially among traditionally underrepresented student groups in mathematics. However, IBL classrooms are not easy to implement; in particular, instructors need to know how to write appropriate materials, lead effective class discussions, and deal with student expectations. Primary Source Projects (PSPs) helped me address my deficiencies in these areas and become a more effective instructor. In this narrative, I relate my experiences using PSPs to transform my lecture classroom into a fully student-centered class, starting modestly by utilizing IBL with only one PSP …

From Geometric Intuition To Arithmetical Rigor: Teaching Analysis With Bolzano’S Original Text, Anne Duffee Jun 2025

From Geometric Intuition To Arithmetical Rigor: Teaching Analysis With Bolzano’S Original Text, Anne Duffee

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper I argue for the value of reading primary historical texts in mathematics courses. In particular, I show how close readings of Bolzano’s 1817 paper on the Intermediate Value Theorem in an introductory analysis course helps students understand the working use of fundamental analytic concepts and problems. I further argue that the philosophical purpose of reading primary texts is the “desedimentation” of knowledge, a process through which students come to understand the origins of mathematical concepts as solutions to historical problems.

Inclusive Pedagogy In Mathematics Via Primary Source Projects, Abe Edwards, Dominic Klyve, Kenneth M. Monks

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Teaching undergraduate mathematics using Primary Source Projects (PSPs) has recently shown great promise with regards to creating an inclusive classroom. In this article, the authors share examples of this from their own teaching and conclude with a call to action so that this benefit, perhaps unique to PSPs, may be more fully explored and utilized to the benefit of our students.

The Figurate Numbers: From Verbal Expression To Algebraic Symbolism, Jerry Lodder Jun 2025

The Figurate Numbers: From Verbal Expression To Algebraic Symbolism, Jerry Lodder

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We study the historical development of the figurate numbers, from ancient Greece through Pierre de Fermat to the work of Blaise Pascal, examining key passages for the construction and computation of the figurate numbers as well as their use in enumerating combinations. To assist in a transition to algebraic equivalents of these verbal passages, we introduce tools from transformational grammar to rewrite the surface structure of certain sentences in terms of more streamlined sentences amenable to algebraic formation. These linguistic techniques allow for the identification of key nouns that become single algebraic symbols, while other linguistic rules show how these …

Nourishing Motherhood: A Self-Paced Online Nutrition Curriculum For Women To Support Mental Well-Being And Optimize Health During Pregnancy And Post Birth, Imogen Knight

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major public health burden, affecting approximately one in seven women and contributing to numerous adverse outcomes that include poor maternal-infant bonds, failure of breastfeeding, negative parenting practices, and marital discord. Nutrition has been increasingly recognized as a modifiable risk factor in the prevention and management of depressive symptoms, yet nutrition education remains underutilized in perinatal care. This project aimed to develop an accessible, evidence-based online nutrition curriculum designed for women from preconception through the postpartum period. The curriculum comprises five evidence-based modules rooted in Social Cognitive Theory to promote learner engagement, self-efficacy, and sustained behavior …

A Strand In The Web: My Amish Roots Among The Swiss Anabaptists, Duane Schlabach Jun 2025

A Strand In The Web: My Amish Roots Among The Swiss Anabaptists, Duane Schlabach

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The early morning summer sun cuts through the murmuring leaves of the towering maple tree rooted deeply on the edge of the large common area in Interlaken, Switzerland. It’s 2018, and the pealing bells from the Schlosskirche [castle church] still cut through the ground fog hanging along the water’s edge, crescendo over the lakes, and reverberate off the cliff walls like it has for countless generations. The pull of ancestral voices from the misty northern shorelines of Lake Thun in Oberhofen settles deep into the marrow of my identity. I stand in my Heimatort [place of origin] the land where …

Sahs Presentation At The Swiss Society Of Boston’S Annual Meeting

Swiss American Historical Society Review

On Saturday, April 12, SAHS President Thomas Quinn Marabello was invited to speak at the Swiss Society of Boston’s annual meeting and dinner in Boston, Massachusetts. It was held at the Hampshire House in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, a mansion built in 1911 by architect Ogden Codman, Jr., who designed several mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, including The Breakers. The five-story Georgian revival townhouse with Italian marble and Palladian windows look out onto Boston Public Garden. The first residents, Bayard and Ruth Thayer, held many salons there and it became Boston’s preeminent salon. In the 1940s, Hampshire House became a …

On The Linguistic History Of The Swiss Amish In Indiana, Tobias Frick Jun 2025

On The Linguistic History Of The Swiss Amish In Indiana, Tobias Frick

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Between 1789 and 1914, about half a million Swiss citizens left their country to find new opportunities abroad.1 By 1880, more than 88,000 Swiss had settled in the United States of America.2 These immigrants carried not only their earthly possessions and their knowledge to the foreign lands, but also brought their Swiss German dialects i.e. their linguistic varieties with them. In most settlements, the Swiss vernaculars were replaced by the majority language of English at some point. The Swiss settlers in New Glarus, Wisconsin, for example, upheld their linguistic variety for several generations before shifting to English.3 An exception is …

An Insight Into The “Berglihütte” In 1908: Grindelwald Mountain Guides – Frozen For The Star Photographer, Karl Horat

Swiss American Historical Society Review

We are in 1908, inside the “Berglihütte”, which had been built by the Grindelwald section of the Swiss Alpine Club almost forty years earlier. Since then, it has been perched like an eagle’s nest on a rocky ridge in the middle of the sea of ice at an altitude of around 3,300 meters.

Circular Economy In Construction: Decision-Making Factors And Future Research Avenues, Bahaa Chammout, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The construction sector is a major consumer of raw materials and a significant contributor to environmental degradation. Circular economy (CE) - an economic and systemic approach aimed at minimizing waste and fostering sustainable resource use - offers a remedy for these impacts. However, CE adoption in construction remains under-researched and limited. Accordingly, there is a need to provide a comprehensive understanding of CE decision-making factors in construction. This paper addresses this research need. First, the authors reviewed 138 journal articles on CE in construction, published between 2015 and 2023, and compiled a comprehensive list of 40 factors influencing CE decision-making. …

Mechanisms Of Interventions Targeting Modifiable Factors For Dementia Risk Reduction, Anna Matton, Ruth Stephen, Makrina Daniilidou, Mariagnese Barbera, Vilma Alanko, Marcel Ballin, Jamie Ford, Katri Hemiö, Jenni Lehtisalo, Chinedu Momoh Jun 2025

Mechanisms Of Interventions Targeting Modifiable Factors For Dementia Risk Reduction, Anna Matton, Ruth Stephen, Makrina Daniilidou, Mariagnese Barbera, Vilma Alanko, Marcel Ballin, Jamie Ford, Katri Hemiö, Jenni Lehtisalo, Chinedu Momoh

Brain and Mind Institute

The global prevalence of dementia is increasing. With no widely available and accessible treatments to halt or reverse the progression of dementia, exploring preventative strategies is critical. Lifestyle-based interventions show promise in preventing or delaying dementia onset. However, understanding the complex and multifactorial mechanisms underlying dementia, and how interventions target these pathways, is essential for developing personalized and effective strategies. In this review, we examined the current evidence of the mediating pathways in dementia risk reduction. We focused on mechanisms investigated in single-domain interventions on physical exercise, cognitive training, diet, metabolic/cardiovascular or psycho-social risk factors in line with those combined …

The Role Of Socioeconomic Status In Shaping Associations Between Sensory Association Cortex And Prefrontal Structure And Implications For Executive Function, Maya L. Rosen, Divyangana Rakesh, Rachel R. Romeo Jun 2025

The Role Of Socioeconomic Status In Shaping Associations Between Sensory Association Cortex And Prefrontal Structure And Implications For Executive Function, Maya L. Rosen, Divyangana Rakesh, Rachel R. Romeo

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with widespread differences in structure of temporal, parietal, occipital, and frontal cortices. Development of sensory processing regions—in particular visual association cortex (VAC) and auditory association cortex (AAC)—may scaffold development of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Experiences that correlate with SES like cognitive stimulation and language may influence VAC and AAC development, in turn allowing the PFC to resolve conflicts between similar stimuli. SES-related differences in these regions may partly explain differences in executive function (EF) skills. Here, we use structural equation modeling of longitudinal data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development study to test the …

Contract Or Prison, S. R. Blanchard Jun 2025

Contract Or Prison, S. R. Blanchard

University of Chicago Law Review

Critics of the criminal enforcement system have condemned the expansion and privatization of electronic monitoring, criminal diversion, parole, and probation. But the astonishing perversion of contract involved in these new practices has gone unnoticed. Governments are turning to “offender-funded” programs that empower firms to contract with people who are suspected of or have been convicted of crimes— and whose alternative to agreeing to these contracts is prosecution or incarceration. Though incarceration-alternative (IA) contracting is sometimes framed as humane, historical and current context illuminates its coercive nature. IA contracting must be examined under classical contract theory and in light of the …

Bridging Gaps Between Training And Teaching Demands In The 21st Century Classroom: A Qualitative Study Of Principal Perceptions On The Quality Of Teacher Preparation Programs, Marvyn C. White Jun 2025

Bridging Gaps Between Training And Teaching Demands In The 21st Century Classroom: A Qualitative Study Of Principal Perceptions On The Quality Of Teacher Preparation Programs, Marvyn C. White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study examined teacher preparation programs in K-12 public schools, focusing on principal perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of teacher preparation programs and their connections to teacher attrition. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with K-12 public school administrators to gain insight into the effectiveness of teacher preparation programs. The research highlighted the need for principals' perceptions of the quality of teacher preparation programs. Current literature indicates that these programs often lack adequate practical classroom experience, provide insufficient training for managing diverse student needs, and fail to equip teachers with effective classroom management strategies. Additionally, principals' insights could …
